DUCO thermostatic mixing valves are used in hot-water units for sanitary facilities. They are mounted in between the hot-water appliance (central heating boiler/storage tank) and the taps of the sanitary facilities. The aim is to keep the mixing water used at the draw-off points at a constant, pre-set temperature. That is because the temperature of the mixing water is subject to fluctuations in temperature and the pressure of inflowing cold and hot water.

DUCO thermostatic mixing valves can also be used in solar energy systems.

The sanitary water in such systems is usually hotter (up to approx. 95°C) coming from the storage tank of the solar energy system.

The internal components in this DUCO Solar Mix have been designed to guarantee the operation of the mixing valve at continuous use at a high temperature, up to 100°C.

Application Duco Mix and T-Mix mixing valve

Operation The thermostatic mixing valve has a control element that works like a temperature sensor. Through expansion and contraction, this sensor continuously controls the flow of hot and cold water in the right proportion. Even in the event of a drop in pressure, e.g. when others are drawing off water or after fluctuations in temperature at the cold and/or hot inlet of the valve, the valve will automatically control the water flow. In this way, the set temperature will be maintained.

Adjust the turning knob on top of the valve to set the temperature of the mixing water. The temperature of the sanitary hot water can be set between 30°C and 70°C.

Technical info

The expansion of the control element will push the control valve down against the operation of the spring. This will narrow the passage for hot water and simultaneously widen the passage for cold water.

The two water flows will merge in the control valve and intensively mix around the entire surface of the control element. This will cause the control element to immediately respond to any changes in temperature.

Safety (risk of legionella and burns)

Hot water for sanitary use and units for storage of hot water (storage tank) must be kept at a temperature of 65°C or higher in order to control any growth of legionella bacteria. However, such water is too hot for immediate use (risks of burning the skin). A thermostatic mixing valve will reduce the temperature down to a pleasant, safe and constant level. Even in case of fluctuations in pressure and inlet temperature.

Reversing valve / diverter

Non-return valves (KIWA)Non-return valves are fitted inside the unit to prevent any unwanted flows/circulation of water. DUCO mixing valves are also available with integrated non-return valves (KIWA) in the cold and hot water inlets of the valve.

The reversing valve is to be mounted between the storage tank and the central heating boiler. If the storage tank is able to provide a sufficient amount of hot water, the reversing valve will lead the water directly to the mixing valve (instantaneous hot-water principle).

If the storage tank is no longer able to provide a sufficient amount of hot water, the reversing valve will lead the water to the central heating boiler (3 = in, 2 = out) for reheating.

Energy savingThe mixing valve is energy saving: a quick response to fluctuations in temperature and pressure, as well as limiting the temperature, will prevent the waste of energy.
