The theme for the AFWAMarrakech congressis: Collaborative mechanisms and innova-tions for sustainable development of waterand sanitation sector in Africa.Over the years, considerable efforts havebeen made to address the challenges facingthe water and sanitation sector in Africa.Though some progress has been made, there is yet much left to be done. The finan-cing gaps are still very wide, coverage is still

very low in most countries in Africa, overallsector management is still an issue in mostcountries in spite of all the reform efforts sincethe early 90s etc. The question is how do wespeed up the resolution of all these challen-ges and sustain sector development in amanner that will keep pace with demand? It isobvious that a business-as-usual approach iscompletely out of the question. Sector stake-holders will need to collaborate, focusing on a

common agenda. Professionals and sectorinstitutions will have to produce more innova-tive solutions if we really want to move thesector forward. The overall congress themefor Marrakech 2012, seeks to encapsulatethese concerns. Sub themes and topics havebeen carefully selected to fit, not only bringingout the issues but also providing working solu-tions
