With the 2007-2008 watch drawing to a close, I’d like to reflect on the past year, as we look forward to coming attractions.

Last year, we hosted 114 kids on the water – a record for our organization, and a trib-ute to TSS members and volunteers who made it all possible! A hearty “thank you and well done” for all hands who pitched in! A special thanks go to the tireless YS Board and staff who made it all happen: The Board: Steve Darcy, Bob Shaw (aka: me), Susan Bishop, Mel Tews, Bob Betting-er, Kathyrn Shea, Dick Borde, Larry Lowe, Ellie Sherwood and Bill and Claire Siele. Day to day program affairs were in good hands, led by Captain Richard White and his beautiful wife (Admiral) Thirlene, with the support of Allyson LeClerc (instructor), and assistants: Wesley Shaw, Tyler Thiede, Gabe Rodgers and Josh White.

From The helm

T a m p a S a i l i n g S q u a d r o n – T h e L i g h t h o u s e2

Ready About, Helm’s a-LeeThe Club is coming about and the helm will be passed off to the very able Vice Commodore Greg Johnson at the Change of Watch dinner. Please plan on attending this event, in support of this watch and the new Watch.

The 2007-08 watch has had its storms. We’ve also seen some very nice sunsets. My hope is that you, the membership support Greg and his Watch as much as you have helped this Watch this past year. If you don’t like the current tack the Club is on, please volunteer to take your turn and head up a committee for the new watch. Just keep in mind, about the time you get comfortable on the rail or trimming the jib, the wind might change, so be ready for some different winds.

The Club has made progress in many areas: TSS Youth Sailing, Sea Explorer Ship 185, racing and crusing. TSS will continue to prosper, as long as we continue to promote a friendly venue for sailing. We must continue to grow our membership to add new ideas and new energy to this organization. New members and the youth of TSS will shape the future of the Tampa Sailing Squadron. Please help develop today’s youth and new members for the future of TSS.

Ready About Hard a-Lee Watch out DUCK!!!

Secretary: Pat Austin

The Board approved a proposed bylaws change for presentation to the membership. The Notice of Proposed Bylaws Change is separately published in this Lighthouse and posted on the website and at the Club.

The Treasurer’s financial reports were reviewed in detail. The bank statements and financial reports are always available for members’ review.

Insurance agent Bruce McReady presented a summary of coverage under our insurance policies.

Welcome our newest members, David and Susan Schleif!

Mike and Emilee Rugh will be moving their boat to wet slip #33. Congratulations!

The outbuildings and the deck of the picnic pavilion have been painted. We have energy efficient lights on the dock and porch. The sheds and grounds have been cleaned up.

THERE WILL BE NO WORK PARTY AND NO RACES ON MARCH 22, SO WE CAN ALL TURN OUT FOR THE CHANGE OF WATCH DINNER. CALL CHER CIUFIA FOR TICKETS.

Minor electrical and mechanical problems on the railway have been resolved. 40 boats have been up and we are booked until May 23. Haulout fee must be paid in full no less than 30 days before the scheduled haul. Contact Paul Kasl, Railmaster.

Several wet and dry slip lessees are not current with leases, registration or insur-ance, so letters will be sent.

Postage rates are going up again. Printing and mailing the newsletter are signifi-cant expenses. Please consider receiving your Lighthouse by e-mail and printing it at home.

Drew Barrett will be our Cruising Fleet Captain and Dan Kresge our Racing Fleet Captain.

Float your boats! The Manatee River cruise is April 19 and 20. The Sea Scout Re-gatta is April 25 – 27. They need boats and skippers. The Steve Brownell Commo-dore’s Cup Regatta is May 3 and the Women’s Commodore’s Cup Regatta is May 4. Funds from the regatta pig roast will go to TSS Youth Sailing.

Youth Sailing will have a Nautical Flea Market at TSS on April 19. TSSYS will host the food for the 4th of July, with a beer tasting ($10). Sailing camps begin June 9 and run for 9 weeks.

Youth Sailing and Sea Explorers have boats for sale.

Thanks to the TSSers who loaned funds to our special reserves, we have met our $50,000 goal.

Cruising Fleet information is available at the following Google groups site:

http://groups.google.com/group/tss-cruising-fleet

The Cruising Fleet planning meeting will be held after the April work party on 26 April 2008 at 11:00am. We shall meet in the clubhouse. Please join us and bring your sug-gestions and/or questions.

I shall attempt to provide templates to volunteer cruise hosts so that we may have a consistent and complete source of information. Please feel free to let me know your suggestions regarding what other information would assist you.

My plan is to use our TSS Cruising Fleet site on Google to inform all who have access and interest in using the web. The site also includes a list server. You may subscribe and receive an email when new information is posted on the site. You may also direct questions to me and/or the cruise hosts using the options at the bottom of the email.

You may sign up for a cruise, as always, on the cruising bulletin board or by sending an email to the group site or host. The email address for the group is:

[email protected]

Emails that you send to the above address will be seen by all group members. The next two event summaries as they appear on the web site and will appear on the com-bined calendar are below:

Description:

The Dolphin Cruising Club is a group of enthusiasts who sponsor a couple of cruises per month in the Tampa Bay area. They are loosely organized with no physical plant or fixed location. They organize and communicate via the web and email. We hope this is the first of a number of cooperative endeavors much like those we do with Davis Island and Boca Ciega. Most boats will ar-rive throughout the day Saturday.

Planned activities include a Saturday afternoon/evening happy hour and cook out using our facilities. Len Berkstresser has volunteered a keg of green beer and Al Sera has agreed to be the grill master. We are working on a menu with the visiting group, but each of us should bring a covered dish, appetizer or desert for six people. The Dolphin group will cook breakfast in our kitchen on Sunday morning before they leave.

They have about 68 boats from which a subset will visit us. Some will coor-dinate with Dave to use available docks. Others will anchor and dinghy in. Please plan to spend time at the club over the weekend, meet new friends and have much fun. Clean-up help is welcome. Richard Davis and Rene Clark are their coordinators. Their contact information is: H (727) 527-5551 / email: [email protected].

MYTH TRUTH

10. You have to be a long-time

member to sponsor

You can sponsor as soon as you are a member

9. If you sponsor someone, you have to attend every event at TSS

You must be present for 2 readings at 2 membership meetings

8. You need to make sure the applicant has a cool boat in good condition

No boat is necessary

7. Only sponsor people who have skills we need

Everyone has a skill we need; your job is to identify that skill!

6. If you sponsor someone you have to make them ‘do stuff’ like participate in events, and they may not like that

They will always remember how nice you are for making them feel welcomed!

5. It costs money to sponsor The sponsor pays nothing

4. It takes a lot of time to be a sponsor You’ll get out of it what you put into it. Minimum is #9 above and at least 2 work parties with the applicant

3. The club is for ‘old timers’ and I don’t want to upset the applecart

The club is for members, old and new. Without new, we won’t be here to be ‘old timers’

2. I don’t know enough people at TSS to sponsor someone

It’s a great way to force yourself to par-ticipate and meet some new people

1. It ‘s hard to sponsor someone now It’s pretty simple

a.Sign the application

b. Stay in touch during the application process and probationary period by invit-ing the applicant to events, work parties, meetings, etc. Offer to hang out, answer questions, etc.

c. Give at least one of the two readings – these are 2 minute introductions to the general membership.

d. Sign the activity reports showing par-ticipation and dates.

Top 10 Myths about SponsoringBarbara Mellens

As leader of the Membership Team, I learned that there are many myths circulating about the role of a sponsor… here are my favorites –

and the corrections!

So the moral to the story is… If you are a Member, IF you can speak, and IF you can sign your name, you can sponsor a member. Try it, you might like it!!!

The Joey Meyer Regatta was a picture perfect close to a year that of-fered its share of “bumps in the night.” Life’s responsibilities crept in re-quiring some change in responsibilities on the YS Board and staff – hey, anyone can sail on a bright, beautiful day, it’s when the wind and seas kick up that the fun really starts! We had our share that will be fodder for future sea stories (all of which start out with “hey this is no s%$t!” ☺

Speaking of the future…it is bright and coming fast!

TUESDAY LUNCH BUNCH a long TSS tradition!

If you’re one of the lucky few that can get away on Tuesday around 11:00 or 11:30, a group of TSS members go over to Alpha Pizza every Tuesday for lunch. Everyone is welcome and the stories sometimes go on and on and on. But the knowledge and experiences that are shared on topics such as sailing and life in general might help you not get stuck on a sand bar or even win a few yacht races on Tampa Bay. You might say the old salts have quite a few tricks that they have used over the years.

TSS MEMBERSHIP – PRICELESS! A NOTE FROM A MEMBER

I did not get to Florida at all this year so I was thinking of letting the mem-bership lapse since it is now over $100. Still a great bargain, of course. The biggest reason I renew is because of the Youth Sailing Program TSS sup-ports. When I was in grade school, some of my classmates lived on Davis Island or belonged to the Yacht Club at Ballast Point. They always talked about sailing and racing but I could not afford an inner tube. When I first sailed at 21 years old I realized what I had missed. There are probably still few places in the country where a poor boy can learn to sail……..Steve Fessenden

Annual Dues and Slip Fees pay TSS’s expenses. The Slip Fees are paid in advance each quarter. Dry and Wet Slip Fees are due the 12th day of the first month of each quarter (January 12, April 12, July 12, and October 12). There is a $10 late fee and the Board may not renew slip leases on members if not paid on time. (TSS Rules & Regulations, VII, C)

The Dry Slip Fees have the following breakdown:

General Expenses ................................................. $0.65

Insurance Expenses ................................................... $0.30

Real Estate Tax Expenses ..................................................$0.19

Total ......................................$1.14 a foot plus tax per month (16’ minimum length)

The Wet Slip Fees have the following breakdown:

Bottom Lease .....................................................$0.23

General Expenses ..................................................$1.25

Insurance Expenses ....................................................$0.30

Real Estate Tax Expenses ...................................................$0.68

Total ......................................$2.46 a foot plus tax per month (30’ minimum length)

Annual Dues are payable on January 1. If not postmarked by the last day of February, the member’s name shall be stricken from the membership roll. To be reinstated, the dropped member needs the Board of Directors approval and must pay a penalty fee of 10% of the initiation fee ($40), per month from March 1 to a maximum of 10 months. (TSS Bylaws, Article IV, 4-5)

Taxes are levied on a not-for-profit organization’s dues, membership fees, and services unless the organization qualifies as a not-for-profit entity under the provisions of s. 501(c )(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, according to Florida Statute 212.04, 2.a. The Tampa Sailing Squadron is a not-for-profit entity under the provisions of s. 501(c )(7), which does not exempt us from collecting sales tax on dues, membership fees, and services.
