April 2013
We hope that you are doing well, and
enjoyed the semester! It is hard to believe that
in just a few weeks, summer will be here!
Make the most of these last few weeks as you
continue to touch and better the lives of
others!
We really enjoyed seeing so many of
you at APhA2013 in Los Angeles, California! IT
was great to reconnect with some of you,
and also meet other awesome Region 3
members! Our region was definitely well
represented at APhA2013, and this is truly a
reflection of your hearts to serve the
community, the public and each other. As
you prepare to turnover offices, reflect on
what you accomplished this past year, and
brainstorm new ideas over the summer, we
would just encourage you to keep pursuing
“service above self” in all areas of your
professional and personal endeavors.
Also, April is Autism Awareness Month!
Please feel free to send in anything your
chapter does to increase awareness and you
will be featured in the next newsletter!

March Recap: Poison Prevention and Colorectal
Cancer Awareness Month!
Presbyterian College
Poison Control Week
On the week of March 25, our chapter helped raise awareness of the
dangerous consequences of toxic chemicals around the household to over 200
elementary students. Members of the chapter volunteered to help explain to the
kids the safety precautions and risks of everyday household chemicals. We
handed out supplemental information for the kids and parents in cases of
dangerous situations for any poisonous chemicals. Kids were able to ask questions
about any concerns they had regarding poison prevention.
March-National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month
In honor of the Awareness Month, we held our philanthropy fundraiser
March 18- 22. During the week we conducted various fundraiser events to raise
money for the Center for Colon Cancer Research of South Carolina. We had the
director of the CCR, Dr. Frank Berger, come speak to our chapter about the
importance of colon cancer and how we as student pharmacists have several
opportunities to raise awareness. We ended the week with a Low Country Boil
where students, professors, family and friends got together for some Cajun Style
fun. We raised over $2000 to help benefit the Center for Colon Cancer Research.

our offerings to our members. Over that year, we almost doubled our
membership to include almost 75% of our student body. We initiated 21
new patient care events, offered 8 policy and advocacy events, and
hosted a new series of professional development events. We were
especially proud of our opportunity to collaborate with the law school
on our campus to host an event featuring the Alabama Medicaid
Commissioner as well as a representative from the Alabama Hospital

March Recap: APhA2013!
Chapter Achievement Awards!
APhA Outstanding Advisor Award: Professor Thomas Munyer, University of Florida
“Professor Munyer reminds us as students that we are not alone in this
struggle to succeed in pharmacy school, as he shares, “We all have
challenges and it’s not easy. This program is very different than anything any
of us have ever experienced. You struggle very hard and it’s difficult, like a
butterfly trying to get out of its cocoon. Rotations are when you spread your
wings and fly.”
When rotations were first introduced into the UF pharmacy program, he “got a glimpse of what
we, as pharmacists, could do for patients and for physicians… totally eye-opening” and he decided
not to go into pharmacology research and to be a clinician instead! He appreciatively thanks his
own professor, Ron Stuart for having the “drive and spirit to lay down the foundation for our college
to begin to expand in the clinician practice area” for the first time. Witnessing the profession change
so much over the years, as he confesses, “I wish I were your age! I see where we have come and all
of the opportunities that are happening for you that so many people have struggled for to begin.
You are getting recognized; insurance companies are beginning to pay you for your skills; you can
be an independent practitioner with a consultant license. We have dreamt of that all our lives, and
now they’re happening for you.” Professor Munyer genuinely wants us to succeed. “I love seeing our
students so well-prepared and seeing them want those responsibilities. Pharmacy has been a
wonderful career for me. I am in heaven. This is the best.” Arielle Gabarda, PharmD Candidate 2016
Caroline Davis, PharmD Candidate 2016
University of Florida
Student Leadership Award: Justin Arnall, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
One of the most influential leaders in your life?
My grandfather remains the most influential leader in my life. Growing up I was always amazed
at how people seemed to gravitate to him and how he was always willing to make things happen.
Whether a school board administrator, bank manager, church elder, or a volunteer at the French fry
booth at a local festival, my grandfather’s work ethic and infectious good nature embodied the
best qualities of a great leader!
Any Advice on being a leader?
Be open to any and all opportunities, and in all opportunities think about how you can help
others grow more than yourself. I have found throughout school and my time as a leader that often
the best projects were not ones that we expected. The greatest leaders that I
have seen and worked with find a way to embrace these opportunities with
their own plans, for the greatest impact and outcomes. Further, as a leader,
our duty is to those we lead. If ou’regoing to be a leader, always think first about
the people you’re leading, and do everything you can to help them develop
into leaders themselves.

Advocacy Pearls!
Keys to Working with Your State Organization
At Annual, there was a session to give student pharmacists ideas on how to work with ASP and your
state association. Below are three keys to success…
1. Become Active in Policy
Many legislators are unaware of the services pharmacists can provide. Does your legislator know
pharmacists can immunize? How about being Certified Diabetes Educators? If not, then you should let
them know. Working on the state level allows us to work on a smaller scale with people you may know
(especially if you are from a small town like me) and make an impact you can really see.
2. Get Your APhA-ASP Chapter Involved
If you have a student liaison with your state association, then allow them to sit in with your executive
committee and give updates to your chapter. By doing this, all members in the ASP chapter can be
aware of the workings of their state organization and know the opportunities they have to work together.
3. Pool Your Resources
If you are lucky enough to have multiple colleges of pharmacy in your state, do not forget the
importance of collaboration. Collaborate to do statewide events to make a larger, more lasting impact.
Each ASP chapter has the ability to do great things, so how about we take those successes and amplify
them by working across our state.

Patient Care Project Spotlight!
Operation Immunization!
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hil
APhA-ASP Region 3 Operation Immunization Winner
2011-2012 was a big year for Operation Immunization at UNC! Not only were
successful volunteer events continued, but many new opportunities were
developed. These events enabled student volunteers to educate the community
about the importance of vaccinations, as well as the ability to administer vital
immunizations to patients.
The Student Health Action Coalition (SHAC) clinic and UNC Campus Health were
two new initiatives where student pharmacists were able to administer the influenza
vaccine. SHAC is an interdisciplinary effort between various health professions
students and provides free medical care to uninsured and underserved members of
the community. Funding from the APhA Foundation Student Pharmacist Innovation in
Immunization Practices grant enabled all eligible SHAC clinic patients to receive the
influenza vaccine free of charge. Student pharmacists were involved in taking
medication histories, asking if patients were interested in the service, and
administering the vaccine to consented patients. The Campus Health Pharmacy
advocated the influenza vaccine to both undergraduate and graduate students,
consented interested patients, administered the vaccine, and counseled patients
about the vaccine and influenza. Other successful Operation Immunization events
from previous years were continued, including administering flu shots at the North
Carolina State Fair with a local community pharmacy, Kerr Drug, advocating
vaccination during the flu season with a postcard campaign at local pharmacies,
and educating the community about vaccinations at various health fairs. By the end
of the year student pharmacists within UNC’s chapter of APhA-ASP made a huge
impact on the community through Operation Immunization.
New ideas that have been successful this year include hosting speakers from
pharmaceutical industry who are experts in immunizations and providing
immunizations at the first Region 3 MRM Health Fair with our fellow student
pharmacists from Auburn University. UNC is excited to see where Operation
Immunization will take us in patient care in the future!

APhA-ASP Region 3 Newsletter April 2013
The University of Tennessee Health Science Center APhA-ASP Operation Immunization
committee wanted to make mark this year by implementing a new innovative patient care
event. We further expanded one of our well established annual flu clinics, Boo Flu, by
entering all immunizations given into the state’s immunization information system (IIS) called
TWIS (Tennessee Web Immunization System). It is not required for all health care
professionals to input immunizations into TWIS which leads to a lack of participation. We
joined the state in campaigning for a greater involvement in this important program.
The committee collaborated with Student Health to
update the immunization form to have all necessary
information to input immunizations into TWIS. Our advisor
Dr. Foster and twenty-seven student pharmacists were
registered into TWIS. All 1800 immunization records from
Boo Flu were added into TWIS. In addition, our committee
presented an educational poster about TWIS titled “Let’s
Do the TWIS” at the Tennessee Pharmacists Association
(TPA) Midyear meeting in Nashville, TN. Student
pharmacists, pharmacists, and state government leaders
were informed of the purpose of TWIS and why
pharmacists should utilize the system. Kelly Moore, the
Medical Director of the TN Immunization Program, stated
“only wish I’d thought of the ‘Let’s do the TWIS’ slogan
myself! Congratulations and thanks …for helping us get all
TN pharmacists doing the TWIS!”

Collaboration Corner
With the various changes in health care, it is important to promote collaboration
among chapters and health professionals. Together, we have the ability to reach more
individuals and make a more profound difference!
Campbell University!
On March 26, Campbell's chapter of APhA-ASP hosted the College of Pharmacy &
Health Sciences health fair on the Academic Circle of Campbell University. Annually,
the health fair gives first year student pharmacists and physician assistant students a
chance to show off their newly acquired skills. This is APhA-ASP's biggest event of the
year. Each of the four Operation chairs and our SPAN Liason hosted a booth including
a team-up of Operations Self Care and Diabetes that allowed patients to play an
interactive OTC product selection for diabetics game! The fair offered free screenings
to patients including blood glucose, blood pressure, cholesterol, BMI, and bone
density. We also offered health education on a variety of other topics such as herbal
medicine, summertime first aid & skin care, smoking cessation, and ways to cope with
stress and depression. Many other student organizations participated presenting their
various initiatives including all three fraternities on campus, SNPhA, student chapter of
ASHP, NCPA, and UAEM! We also had information booths about the university's
physician assistant, masters in public health, and clinical research programs. We had
approximately 300 people in attendance as well as the college's dean, Dr. Ronald
Maddox, two of our APhA-ASP faculty advisors, Dr. Jim Boyd and Dr. Leigh Foushee,
and approximately 30 other faculty
Our school is expanding very rapidly with the addition of a Masters in Physician
Assistant program 2 years ago and a Masters in Public Health program this past fall. Fall
of 2013 will mark the opening of a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Program and a
Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. With all of these changes, we are working very
hard as student pharmacists to make all of these new disciplines welcome on
campus. This health fair is a great way for us to work towards that interprofessional
collaboration. Jordan Ballou

IPSF
Involvement
IPSF has the potential to
touch many lives
through various projects
and incentives! Needs
some fresh ideas?
University of South
Carolina has some
pretty unique things
happening at their
chapter!
University of South Carolina
This year for IPSF we kicked off the year with
a book drive for used general science and
pharmacy textbooks. The Pharmabridge
Project of the Federation of International
Pharmacists sends these books around the
world to strengthen pharmaceutical services
and pharmacy education in developing and
transitional countries. We had a great turn out
and the books just keep rolling in even
though the deadline has passed. Professors ,
students, and even the deans of the South
Carolina College of Pharmacy at MUSC
participated by donating old editions of
textbooks from their personal collections and
duplicate current editions laying around their
offices. The Drug Information Center at MUSC
even donated their gently used editions to
make way for updated references. We are
excited about this year’s participation and
very thankful to all those who donated and
participated in the project’s success.
