eTDE Update

The eTDE Taskforce will be meeting on March 30 at the Hilton Garden

Inn in College Park, GA near the airport. The meeting will be from 10:00-12:00 to discuss resolution of any issues as well as an update on adopters of the system. Re-sponse to this meeting has been

very good with key shellers, manu-facturers, labs, FSIS representa-tives, and important software pro-viders planning to attend. The session will include training on use of a new part of the system called eDoc. The new eDoc system is a web-based system that will allow completion of the EU’s Annex/Checklist document online. Shel-lers who export peanuts are en-couraged to have people from their plants that are currently fill-ing out this document to attend

this meeting. During the afternoon training session, from 1:00-3:00, there will be an overview of the base eTDE system with additional review of updates made in 2011. The eTDE group was notified last week that they will receive funding for 2012 from FAS which will allow for additional importing countries to be added this year. Major ef-forts are being made to add Can-ada, Mexico, Russia, and China.

To meet the growing demand for ready-to-use therapeutic food in Haiti, the peanut industry do-nated 12,000 pounds of peanuts to Meds and Foods for Kids (MFK) in Cap Haitian, Haiti, this February

2012. Long term, MFK is working with local farmers to grow the high quality peanuts necessary to meet the demand for manufacturing Medika Mamba. Currently, MFK uses all the local peanuts available and supplements with imported peanuts only when necessary. To ease the burden on vulnerable children suffering from severe acute

malnutrition, peanut shelling com-panies, Birdsong Peanuts (based in Suffolk, Virginia) and Clint Williams Company (located in Madill, Okla-homa) donated 8,000 pounds and 4,000 pounds of peanuts, respec-tively, to be made into Medika Mamba. Medika Mamba is a ready-to-use therapeutic food; a mixture of peanut paste, vegetable oil, milk powder, sugar and vitamins and minerals that has proven to be a highly effective treatment for mal-nutrition. In addition, the industry initiative “Peanut Butter for the Hungry” as-sisted with freight for the donated peanuts to MFK’s pre-shipment facil-ity in Miami. The total industry do-nation amounted to nearly $15,000.

The U.S. peanut industry has con-tributed time, talent and funds to assist the Haitian peanut industry as well, and will continue until peanuts from the U.S. are no longer needed. The peanut industry has faced one of its most difficult years in recent history. With record-breaking high heat as well as drought conditions across the growing regions, the price of peanuts has soared to never-before-seen highs. According to Canada Border Ser-vices Agency (CBSA), since Novem-ber 1, 2011, highway carriers that do not comply with the requirement to electronically transmit cargo and conveyance data ahead of arrival at the border will be denied entry and

face zero-rated penalties. After May 1, 2012, highway carriers that do not comply with requirements will be denied entry and face mone-tary penalties. When fully imple-mented, eManifest will be a virtually paperless process that starts before

shipments reach the border and will improve communications between the trade and the CBSA. For more information see http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/prog/manif/portal-portail-eng.html1

THE PEANUT FOUNDATION UPDATES

Peanut Foundation Research and Funding Updates

Over $820,000 has already been pledged for 2012 to support the general research of the Peanut Foundation and much of the mon-ies are earmarked for the Peanut Genome Initiative. If you have not made your pledge to the Founda-tion for this year, please consider it at this time. The Peanut Foundation needs your help this year more than most. We are embarking on a three-year program to develop gene markers for most of the key peanut diseases and nutritional traits. This effort should allow traditional breeders to develop new varieties with enhanced dis-ease resistance and quality, and will save our industry over $200,000,000 a year. In order to accomplish this, we need to raise

$2,000,000 a year for the next three years. Please also remember the Peanut Foundation will be meeting on Thursday, March 29, at the Hilton Garden Inn, 2301 Sullivan Road, College Park, GA 30337. The morning will be devoted to re-viewing the projects funded for 2012 with additional reports on the progress with sequencing the peanut genome and identifying key disease markers. Also, an update will be given on results of work being done to identify traits for nutrition and quality in the Germplasm Collection. This re-view promises to be extremely informative with key peanut re-searchers from USDA and most of the peanut universities. After-noon meetings will include a re-

view of proposals submitted for funding in 2012 by the Technical Review Committee and by the Peanut Foundation Board mem-bers. The Foundation is also looking for nominees for the 2012 Peanut Research and Education Award. Forms may be obtained by con-tacting Cindy Stickles at [email protected]. Deadline for submission will be March 26. The selected individual will re-ceive a trip to the APC Summer meeting in Charleston, SC and a check for $1,000. This award is co-sponsored by the Foundation and Bayer CropScience.

PEANUT NUTRITON

Analyzing data from the US NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) be-tween 1999 and 2004 for more

than 13,000 adults over age 19 showed that people eating more peanuts, peanut butter and other nuts have lower heart disease and metabolic syndrome risks.* This is a relationship finding (epidemiology) and not cause and effect from a clinical study, but the finding is important. The work was done at LSU and Baylor University. Consuming nuts –most of which would have been peanut products given their popularity with Ameri-can consumers - was associated with a decreased body mass index, smaller waist circumference and lower systolic blood pressure com-pared with non-consumers. Nut

consumers also had a lower per-centage of two risk factors for metabolic syndrome: hypertension and low levels of high-density cho-lesterol (HDL). As in previous stud-ies, higher nut consumption was not associated with weight gain. The researchers concluded “This study, coupled with the preponder-ance of evidence, suggests that nut consumption—peanuts and tree nuts, and tree nuts alone should be encouraged by health profession-als…. ” Importantly for how nuts are un-derstood by and promoted to con-sumers as healthy foods, the re-searchers also raised “ … the possi-bility that future dietary recom-mendations should consider a separate nut category to encour-age consumption.” Doing that would be a big step forward. High-lighting the health benefits of pea-nuts and other nuts in their own right, not just as one of the

“alternatives” to animal protein sources, would change the look of food plates and pyramids. It really is time for nuts to have the health spotlight to themselves, so the call for separate nut consump-tion recommendations is welcome. This study showed that nut con-sumption was low and only a mi-nority of subjects in this study were consuming more that 7g (1/4 oz) a day of all nuts. So there is still a lot to do to turn people on to the health benefits of eating more peanuts and peanut butter as part of a balanced healthy eating pat-tern. * O’Neil CE et al. Nut consumption is associated with decreased health risk factors for cardiovascular dis-ease and metabolic syndrome in US adults: NHANES 1999–2004. NUTRITION NEWS YOU CAN USE: US data shows eating peanuts and other nuts linked with lower heart disease and metabolic syndrome risks Dr. Andrew Craig, APC Health Consultant, London

Bob Parker, chairman of the Pea-nut Institute, told NPBPA Conven-tioneers that the Peanut Institute has successfully worked with the American Heart Association to get permission to use the Heart Check icon on the front of packaged pea-nut products. The claim certified whole, chopped or in-shelled pea-nuts. Primary nutrition criteria are’ less than 140 mg of sodium per

label serving’ and ‘4 grams of satu-rated fat per 50 grams.’ USDA research shows oil roasted peanuts w/salt with 119 mg/1 oz. and saturated fat at less than 4 grams. The Peanut Institute is paying the general set-up fee and that makes peanuts eligible for the AHA Heart Check. The Institute is now working on identifying and certifying partners and will soon

initiate a major promotion cam-paign. Partners will have to pay $1,000 per produce type annually to AHA. For more information, contact the Peanut Institute at www.peanut-institute.org

APC GUEST COLUMNIST Lance Reeve – Director of Food Defense, AIB Food Defense Resource Center

Food Defense Update

This year, the food industry will see significant updates to food defense. The FDA is scheduled to release rules for the intentional tampering portion of the Food Safety Modernization Act. These rules will likely require some very specific measures to be under-taken by food manufacturers, warehousing and transportation. Until these specific rules are re-leased, we should be updating our existing food defense programs. 1. All companies should either

complete their initial vulner-ability assessment or conduct a yearly update of their exist-ing assessments. These as-sessments should evaluate existing food defense and security measures and deter-mine their effectiveness. The assessments should also ac-count for any and all food defense and security issues that may have occurred within the organization over the past year. The assess-ments can be conducted by a trained food defense team and utilize guidance docu-ments provided by the FDA or other vulnerability assess-ments available to the indus-try. Food Defense and Secu-rity professionals can also assist those companies that

may be conducting their first assessment or are looking for perspectives from outside of the company.

FDA guidance documents: http://www.fda.gov/Food/FoodDefense/FoodSecurity/default.htm

2. Food Defense training and

education should also be updated for all employees within the organization. This training and education should remind and reinforce the food defense and security rules for all employees in the company. This training and education should challenge all employees to not only comply with the rules but to also be aware of security issues they may observe and bring these events forward to the food defense team. In order to determine the effec-tiveness of this training and education, exit criteria such as an exam, group discussion, scenarios, or other measures should be provided to ensure employees have compre-hended the training and edu-cation.

3. Unfortunately, workplace

violence has already been an

issue for the food industry in 2012. A homicide and suicide occurred at a food processors parking lot in Georgia. An employee opened fire in the parking lot outside of the facility and killed a co-worker.

This event should be a re-minder to all those in the food industry that workplace violence prevention and re-sponse programs are an im-portant part of our food de-fense programs. All compa-nies should evaluate their food defense program to ensure a workplace violence policy is in place and en-forced. Human resources, the food defense team, and security personnel are all important elements of this program.

These three topics should be im-portant goals for every company to update during the year 2012. The success of preventing inten-tional tampering, workplace vio-lence or other security related events is dependent on keeping your food defense systems current and all employees updated and active in your food defense pro-gram. Viaskin® Peanut Receives FDA “Fast Track Designation”

DBV Technologies announced re-cently that it has received “Fast Track Designation” for the Clinical Development Program of its Vi-askin® Peanut, a product designed for the treatment by Epicutaneous Immunotherapy (EPIT) of patients with peanut allergy. Products in the FDA’s Fast Track program normally receive priority review, and DBV

could also be eligible to submit a U.S. BLA (Biologics License Applica-tion) on a rolling basis. This permits the FDA to review sections of the BLA in advance of receiving the complete set of clinical data.

A phase Ib clinical study in peanut allergic subjects, currently being finalized, is demonstrating the safety of Viaskin® Peanut.

Viaskin® Peanut’s development is of high interest to many key opin-ion leaders in allergy in the U.S. and in Europe. Efficacy studies will be launched in US and Europe to prove the efficacy of Viaskin® Peanut to desensitize peanut-allergic pa-tients. Viaskin is the first epicutane-ous skin patch for the treatment of peanut allergy.

From the Texas Peanut Producers Board

Three TPPB board members re-tire, leaving path of success for new generation to carry forward The Texas Peanut Producers Board is saying goodbye to three dedicated, longtime directors with 100 years of combined ser-vice to the state’s board as they retire from their long-held posi-tions. Ted Higginbottom of Semi-nole, Billy Shannon of Quitaque and Clifton Stacy of Pearsall leave behind them a well paved path of commitment, hard work and many accomplishments for the Texas peanut industry. “I have enjoyed being on the board,” Stacy, who served on TPPB for approximately 30 years, said. “I decided it was time to hand the reins to someone new, so they could help the board meet the needs of the state’s peanut industry.” These three men have dedicated countless hours serving on a myr-iad of committees and holding numerous offices within the or-ganization, all while maintaining their individual farming opera-tions and staying active stewards of their communities. These directors have seen the state’s peanut industry through many challenges and hurdles, and worked to ensure peanuts are a viable, profitable crop for Texas producers. “Since Texas is such a large state, each peanut producing region has different concerns,” Shannon said, looking back on his 37 years as a TPPB director. “The peanut board works to recognize these

differences and keep them in consideration when making im-portant decisions on research and promotion to benefit the state’s producers.” There have been a number of changes in the state peanut in-dustry since these directors first served on the board. It is because of the diligence of members such as Higginbottom, Shannon and Stacy that TPPB has adapted with these changes, appropriately representing the state’s peanut industry, while maintaining very active research and promotional programs. “Everyone listened to the needs of peanut farmers, which shows the quality of people serving as directors,” Higginbottom said, reflecting on his 33 years of ser-vice. “The board members put their individual needs aside and looked at the overall picture, which is to help peanut producers in Texas.” TPPB Executive Director Shelly Nutt said the directors volunteer their time and efforts to serve for the greater good of the industry. “I’m blessed to work with 12 di-rectors with hearts of service and true passion for what they do – growing food to feed the world,” Nutt added. Nutt’s thoughts shine true even as these directors step down from their positions. When asked what his greatest accomplishment was, Shannon humbly stated, “Throughout serving on the board, I hope I’ve helped the peanut farmers in the state some-how.” “These three men and their fel-low directors have worked dili-gently to ensure Texas peanuts have prominent visibility, not only within the agricultural industry,

but with Texas consumers,” Nutt said. TPPB Chairman Larry Don Womack of DeLeon said the board has often looked to these three individuals’ extensive ex-perience and valuable insight for their input on numerous matters impacting the peanut industry. “Ted, Billy and Clifton have repre-sented Texas and Texas peanut farmers with their best interests at heart,” Womack said. “They will be missed greatly in the roles they’ve filled as active and re-spected leaders in our industry.” Though these directors are leav-ing their roles as peanut leaders in an official capacity, their im-pact on the state’s peanut indus-try will always be felt. They have left a legacy with big shoes to fill, but each said they felt confident in the next generation’s ability to surpass the already high stan-dards of TPPB. “I think we will have a vibrant peanut industry in Texas for many years to come, “ Higginbottom concluded. TPPB thanks Higginbottom, Shan-non and Stacy for their distin-guished service, guidance, devo-tion and friendship. They will be long remembered. These board members will be recognized for their service at the next TPPB board meeting on March 22 in Lubbock, Texas. The three new TPPB directors will be sworn in at that time. www.texaspeanutboard.com

National Peanut Board “Energize Your World” Promotion Kicks off at Grand Central Terminal

With Hampton Farms, Peanut Butter & Co. and Planters, the National Peanut Board celebrated the launch of the “Energize Your World” promotion on March 14 and 15 at the world’s sixth most visited tourist attraction.

Tens of thousands of commuters and visitors traveling through Grand Central Terminal in New York City met NPB members and other industry representatives and were energized with peanut prod-uct samples, an engaging mini-roller coaster, farm photo oppor-

tunities and the chance to win prizes, including a new car.

Preceding the Grand Central event, dozens of media members attended a peanut-inspired dinner by NYC Chef Suvir Saran to learn more about peanuts and peanut products and interact with NPB’s peanut farmer board members. Further engaging consumers, New York subway ads throughout the month will allow smart phone users to instantly enter the sweep-stakes through quick-response (QR) codes.

The “Energize Your World” promo-tion officially launched at the start of National Peanut Month and will continue through the spring. The initiative also provides a prime opportunity to showcase Amer-ica’s peanut farmers’ commitment to sustainable agriculture and local

communities. Consumers can reg-ister online at www.PeanutsEnergize.com for a chance to win a 2012 Ford Focus—a tremendous incentive and tangi-ble symbol of the energy-sustaining power of peanuts.

In addition to the fuel-efficient 2012 Ford Focus, consumers are eligible to win a family vacation to Six Flags and instant prizes ― from mp3 players and t-shirts to gift cards and electronics as well as peanut lover prize packs.

From New York, NPB members and staff will travel across the country to Six Flags Theme Parks in Georgia, Texas and Southern Cali-fornia to share the energizing and sustainable power of peanuts with hundreds of thousands of consum-ers.
