BRACEROS: Colorado artist Don Coen’s stunning large-scale portraits of migrant workers will be one of three featured exhibits starting September 2 at the Napa Valley Museum in Yountville. In addition, the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, and Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service will present: “Bittersweet Harvest: The Bracero Program 1942-1964,” a bilingual history of Bracero workers and their families. Also, “Braceros: the Napa Valley Story,” is an inspiring companion exhibit on the history and legacy of the Napa Valley Braceros, with rare local material developed by cultural geographer Sandra Nichols and Napa Val-ley College history teacher Jim McGowan and his students. Preparing for disasters can help save lives

Our pets enrich our lives and truly become a part of our fami-lies. In turn, they depend on us for their safety and wellbeing as do the rest of your family members. The best way to protect all your family members in disasters is to have a plan ahead of time. Being prepared can help save lives.

WWW.REDCROSS.ORG is a wealth of preparedness information both for humans and pets or livestock. You are encouraged to take a few minutes to visit the site and learn about how to prepare your home, family and pets for disasters.

HUMANE SOCIETY: Disaster planning and emergency actions for livestock, horses, birds, reptiles or other small animals such as gerbils or hamsters, visit the U.S. Humane Society at www.HSUS.org or Ready.gov.

PREPAREDNESS TIPS FOR YOUR PETS. Would you know how to treat your pet if it were hurt and needing immediate attention? www.redcross.org offers informa-tion for you on pet first aid.

Some preparedness tips for your pets include: Know ahead of an evacuation which hotels accept pets, keep their contact information handy so you can call ahead for a reservation once you have evacuated. Most Red Cross Shelters cannot accept pets, service animals that assist people with disabilities are allowed. In Mendocino County, animal shelters are set up next to people shelters wherever possible. Include your pets in evacuation drills so they are used to going into their carriers and in your vehicle. Make sure your pets vaccinations are current and keep a copy of current records in the pet carriers as it may be required information during a disaster. Consider microchipping your pet so if you are separated from them, you can be reunited faster.

These are just a few ideas and resources for you to consider for your pets in disaster situations. With all the fires happening around us right now, preparing is a great idea for pets and your family. Disasters can happen at any time, don’t be caught off guard!

Inmigración: Perdones Provisionales • Immigration: Pardons of Inadmissibility, part 2 • Wilson Purves, Esq. & Christopher Kerosky, Esq

In our first article last month, we introduced the very important pardon of inadmissibility, known as the I601A, which is necessary for most undocumented immigrants to obtain if they want to become legal permanent residents after marriage to a U.S. citizen. In this article, we provide information and tips on how to prepare your waiver request to improve the likelihood of success.

STANDARDS OF ELIGIBILITYIn order to obtain the pardon for

inadmissibility, it is necessary to convince the immigration service that a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident (LPR) family member will suffer “extreme hardship” if the immigrant is forced to return to their country of origin. That family member must be either a spouse or parent; having a US citizen or LPR child does not make one eligible for the I601A pardon.

It is important that you submit a declaration by the US citizen or LPR relative, explaining the importance of the immigrant in their lives – personally, financially, psychologically. Many supporting statements from other relatives, friends, employers are also good to include. You need to document these arguments with tax and employment records, school transcripts, birth certificates of children, medical documents and other documents described below. Generally I601A applications without these supporting materials are denied.

We generally recommend that, in your arguments and supporting documentation, you make it clear that the U.S. citizen or LPR spouse or parent legally here will suffer extreme hardship under both of two scenarios: (1) the immigrant returns to his or her home country and the spouse or parent stays here in the U.S.; or (2) the spouse or parent returns to the home country with the immigrant.

PERDONES DE INADMISIBILIDAD MIGRATORIA, SEGUNDA PARTEEn nuestro primer artículo del mes pasado, presenta-mos temas de suma importancia con respecto al Perdón de Inadmisibilidad, conocido como I-601A, el cual es necesario para la mayoría de inmigrantes indocumentados si desean convertirse en residentes legales permanentes después de haberse casado con un ciudadano americano. Generalmente una aplicación de Perdón I-601A va a ser denegada sin estos documentos de soporte.

Nosotros recomendamos que, deje claramente establecido en sus argumentos y documentos de soporte, que su cónyuge o padre ciudadano o residente experimentara el “sufrimiento extremo” en estos dos escenarios: (1) Si el inmigrante regresa a su país de origen y su cónyuge o padre se quedan aquí en los Estados Unidos, y (2) El cónyuge o padre regresa con el inmigrante a su país de origen.

ARGUMENTOS Y DOCUMENTACIÓN QUE AYUDAN A OBTENER EL PERDÓN

• Discapacidades en la familia. Problemas físicos, de habla o de aprendizaje del familiar o por extensión, de sus hijos, y de los servicios que reciben aquí por estas discapacidades y la falta de disponibilidad de estos servicios en el país de origen.

• Las dificultades financieras y profesionales que causaría el familiar del solicitante. Es realmente importante describir el efecto que tendría sobre el ciudadano de los Estados Unidos o el cónyuge o padre del residente si el solicitante es forzado a regresar a su país de origen.

• El impacto psicológico sobre los miembros de la familia, si el inmigrante regresa a casa. Por lo general, recomendamos que el cónyuge o padre de ciudadano o residente obtenga una evaluación de un consejero autorizado que documente por escrito el efecto psicológico (depresión, ansiedad, estrés, etc.) que resultaría a causa de la salida del país del inmigrante por 10 años.

ARGUMENTS AND DOCUMENTS WHICH HELP YOU OBTAIN A PARDON

Some of the arguments considered in the evaluation of the extreme hardship” are:

• The health conditions of the spouse or parent. What medical care is needed or received today by the US citizen or LPR relative here in the U.S. which may be difficult to obtain in your country of origin? What sort of medical or psychological care will they require in the future?

• Disabilities in the family. Physical, speech or learning difficulties of the relative or by extension, their children, and the services they receive here for these disabilities; and the lack of availability of these services in the home country.

• The financial and professional hardship it would cause the relative of the applicant. It is really important to describe the effect on the spouse or parent’s finances and career if the applicant is deported to their home country.

• The psychological impact on family members, if the immigrant returns home. We typically recommend that the U.S. citizen or LPR spouse or parent get an evaluation from a licensed counselor who documents by letter the psychological effect (depression, anxiety, stress, etc.) that would result from the immigrant’s departure for 10 years.

• Fear of persecution or other harm if the immigrants returns to the country of origin. We set forth any violence and unrest that exists in the home country and argue, where appropriate, that the applicant’s family would be exposed to potential harm and /or persecution if returned there.

• Economic conditions in the country of origin. Likewise, we describe any adverse economic conditions in the applicant’s home country and how that would likely affect the applicant’s family upon return there. This would include difficulty finding work or a much lower standard of living.

• The family in the United States or lack of family in the country of origin. It is important to emphasize the U.S. citizen or LPR relative’s ties to the United States (family, employment, language, etc.) and lack of ties to the applicant’s home country.

• Immigrant contributions to the community here. Mention of church membership, volunteer work, and other community activities help the case.

Success in the waiver process requires a lot of work by the client and the lawyer or consultant helping the client. A large percentage of waivers are denied but usually these are not well-prepared or adequately documented. If you are diligent and organized, you should be able to succeed through the pardon process.

One final note: always get competent legal advice before leaving the country for a consular interview; there are many cases of immigrants going to the Consulate abroad without such advice in advance, only to find that they are not eligible for their green cards and must spend 10 years outside the country. Don’t let this happen to you—have a trained lawyer look over your case before you depart the U.S.

Como observación final, siempre busque asesoría legal competente antes de viajar a su país para el proceso consular, hay muchos casos en los que el inmigrante viaja al consulado de su país sin ningún asesoramiento previo, y estando allá se dan cuenta que no son elegibles para la residencia y deben pasar 10 años fuera del país. Napa Valley Museum launched its fall season with a prestigious touring history ex-hibit about the Braceros contract worker program from the Smithsonian Institution, an inspiring companion exhibit telling the Napa Valley’s own Bracero story through rare historical and original material developed by Napa Valley College and curator Oscar Aguilar, and a thrilling West Coast premiere of towering paintings by Colorado artist Don Coen celebrating today’s migrant farm workers.LEGACY OF PRIDE

“The Napa Valley Museum’s presentation of these three exhibitions is happening in exact-ly the right place at precisely the right time,” notes Museum Executive Director Laura Rafaty. “We are so proud to be presenting the West Coast premiere of Don Coen’s grand paintings, which shine a spotlight on today’s migrant farm workers against the backdrop of modern immigration policies. There could be no better place to host the final stop of the Smithsonian’s touring Braceros exhibit than here in the Napa Valley, where so much of the Braceros story was written, where the lessons of past contract worker programs are so relevant, and where the Braceros legacy is so positive, enduring and profound.”

“And there could be no more insightful storytellers than the scholars at the Napa Valley College, who are helping to create an unforgettable companion exhibit including personal mementos, rare photographs, and recorded oral histories recounting the Braceros’ extraordinary Napa Valley’s history,” says Rafaty. “So many of our visitors seek out the Museum to learn more about the history of the Napa Valley, and these three exhibits will provide an intimate and thoughtful view – from the 1940’s to today - of the workers who have been, and still are, are essential to our Napa Valley economy, society and culture.”

“THE MIGRANT SERIES”In our Main Gallery, “The Migrant Series,”

the West Coast Premiere of Colorado artist Don Coen’s stunning large-scale portraits of migrant workers. Over two decades, Coen spent hundreds of hours in the fields of California, Colorado, Idaho, Texas and Florida alongside the workers, showcasing each subject’s personality and work ethic in a style some call photo-realism, and which the artist calls “cinematic.” The collected paintings comprise a towering tribute to these often-overlooked migrant workers, and invites viewers to “Meet the real people behind the food you eat.”

Says Don Coen: “I am very excited to have my work being shown at the Napa Valley Museum. Many of the images I took over the years were from up and down the coast of California. Three of the fifteen paintings are subjects from California. The migrants are an important part of the agriculture history of California and deserve to be seen in your state giving the people there an opportunity to see them up close and personal.”

Esta prestigiosa exhibición bilingüe de historia del Instituto Smithsoniano examina las experiencias de los trabajado-res Bracero y Sus familias, que da una detallada visión de la historia mexicano-americana y antecedentes históricos a los debates de hoy sobre los programas de trabajadores invitados. La exposición combina escolaridad reciente, poderosas fotografías de la colección del Smithsoniano y fragmentos de audio de historias orales de antiguos trabajadores por contrato.

En nuestra Galería de Enfoque, “Braceros: la historia del Valle de Napa”, es una inspi-radora exposición acompañante sobre la historia y el legado de los Braceros del Valle de Napa, con un material local poco común que fue desarrollado por el equipo del Napa Valley College, liderado por la geógrafa San- dra Nichols, y el profesor Jim McGowan y sus estudiantes, con contenido adicional de las Sociedades Históricas de Napa y Santa Elena y la Biblioteca del Condado de Napa. Service, present: “Bittersweet Harvest: The Bracero Program 1942-1964.” This prestigious bilingual history exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution examines the experiences of Bracero workers and their families, providing rich insight into Mexican American history and historical background to today’s debates on guest worker pro- grams. The exhibit combines recent scholar- ship, powerful photographs from the Smith-sonian’s collection, and audio excerpts from oral histories by former contract workers.

“BRACEROS: THE NAPA VALLEY STORY”In our Spotlight Gallery, “Braceros:

the Napa Valley Story,” is an inspiring companion exhibit on the history and legacy of the Napa Valley Braceros, with rare local material developed by the Napa Valley College team, led by cultural geographer Sandra Nichols, history teacher Jim McGowan and his students, with additional content from the Napa and St. Helena Historical Societies and the Napa County Library. The exhibit gathers artifacts, photos and testimonials from residents with ties to the Bracero Program, the braceros themselves, and the family members and neighbors who followed in the braceros’ footsteps. “The exhibit will set the scene in World War II when braceros helped save Napa Valley’s agriculture, focuses on four of the many Mexican hometowns that sent braceros to work in Napa, and explores the bracero legacy as it lives on in Napa Valley today,” explains Oscar de Haro, Napa Valley College Vice President for Student Services and Assistant Superintendent, who is the descendant of a Bracero worker.

exhibition is Oscar Aguilar, a Napa artist admired for his work with Nimbus Arts and for his own evocative paintings and sculpture. Aguilar brings his artistic eye to the project, making the exhibition multi-dimensional and emotionally powerful. Says Aguilar: “I am glad to be involved because I am from Mexico and this is another opportunity for me to discover the other side of the face of the workers, especially now, at this moment in history.”

SALÓN, LÁGRIMAS Y DESEO“They fear our culture,” Lila Downs

shared in an exclusive interview with La Voz, in which she talked about her most recent work, Salón, Lágrimas y Deseo, a jarring compilation of militant songs about her roots, feminism, and finding joy in challenging times. Amidst an ongoing trend of reviving classics from older eras of Latin music, Lila remains the leading force. “Music is also cyclical,” said Lila, “our ancestors believed in the cycle of 52 years, and that also happens in music.” The meticulously selected songs, adorned with sharp brass sections, whether subtly or explicitly, also adopt a whole new meaning in the current social climate in the United States.

The heart-wrenching “Urge” is about looking for a beacon of hope amidst adversities, which reflects the lives of the thousands of Latinxs in the United States; “Because I also have the right to live,” Lila heartfeltly sings. “La Mentira,” a ballad popularized by Luis Miguel, is included with a sultry, velvet-like interpretation by Downs. A contrasting joyful song follows: “El Querreque,” a huapango staple by Pedro Rosa, floridly adorned with a multi-layered composition and Down’s impressive vocal range. “Inmortal” is an intense ode to the motherland encased in a powerful bolero. An unexpectedly modern version of “Piensa en Mí” featuring subtle electronic instrumentation and a soulful attitude precedes the klezmer-flavored celebration of freedom in “Envidia”; “You won’t hide me anymore / we are too many now,” Lila sings in a rich, deep tone. The album includes two versions of “Peligrosa,” one a solo effort, and the other a duet with Chilean singer Mon Laferte, with the latter serving as the swan song. This track is a straight-forward romantic ballad about obsessive love.

Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was a soldier, accountant, poet, playwright and novelist. He was born in Alcala de Henares in Spain in 1547. His literary masterpiece Don Quixote of the Mancha is not only a classic of Western literature, it is considered the fi rst modern novel. His other notable works include Entremeses and Novelas Ejemplares.

Cervantes’ father was a barber/surgeon and his mother came from a family of impoverished nobility. Not much is known of his early years. As a young man he went to Italy to study art, architecture and poetry. He enlisted in the Spanish marines in 1570. He was badly wounded fi ghting the Turks in the Battle of Lepanto, losing the use of his left hand. After recovering, he continued his military service until captured at sea by Algerian corsairs. Five years later he was freed through a ransom. Cervantes would later work as a tax collector and in Spanish banking industry. He was also a government purchasing agent, helping to outfi t the ill-fated Spanish Armada.

In 1584 he married Catalina de Palacios, a woman much younger than himself. It was at this time that he began writing plays and poetry. During that period writing plays was where the money was for writers. However he had no great suc-cess in that area and only two of his plays have survived down through the years. The same could be said of his poetry. It wasn’t until 1610 that Cervantes could support himself full-time through writing. It was his wife’s uncle that made him famous. This crazy old coot inspired the creation of the space-case Don Quixote. Cervantes’ man of La Mancha was a skinny old guy on a skinny old horse who was enamored by chivalry tales of days of yore. He came to believe he was one of the knights of the middle ages. (Schitzo Don Quixote was the world’s fi rst historical re-enactor.) Cervantes wrote the fi rst part of this novel in 1605. He wrote the second part in 1615.

Fun Facts about Miguel Cervantes:

Cervantes died within months of fellow playwright William Shakespeare’s death in 1616.

His work was largely forgotten within a generation. He was rediscovered by English writers in the late 18th century.

Sigmund Freud was greatly infl uenced by Cervantes’ Coloquio de los Perros (Conversation of the Dogs). He even learned Spanish so as to understand it better. Freud called it the true origin of psychanalisis.

Su obra literaria maestra “Don Quijote de la Mancha” no sólo es un clásico de la literatura occidental, es considerada la primera novela moderna. Dentro de sus otras obras de notoriedad se encuentran “Entremeses y Novelas Ejemplares”.

El padre de Cervantes fue barbero/cirujano y su madre provenía de una familia de la nobleza venida abajo. No se conoce mucho sobre los primeros años de su vida. De joven se fue a Italia a estudiar Arte, Arquitec-tura y Poesía. Se reclutó con la marina española en 1570. Fue gravemente herido en una batalla en contra de los turcos, en la Batalla de Lepanto, donde perdió su mano izquierda. Después de recuperarse, continuó con su servicio militar hasta que fue capturado en el mar por corsarios argelinos. Cinco años después fue liberado a través de un pago. Cervantes trabajaría posteriormente como recaudador de impuestos y en una industria bancaria española. También fue agente de compras del gobierno, ayudando a equipar al malogrado ejército español.

En 1584, contrajo nupcias con Catalina de Palacios, una mujer mucho más joven que él. Fue en ese tiempo cuando comenzó a escribir obras y poesía. Durante este periodo en el que estuvo escribiendo obras había dinero para los escritores. Sin embargo, Cervantes no tuvo un gran éxito en esta área y sólo dos de sus obras sobrevivieron a través de los años. Lo mismo pudiera decirse de su poesía. No fue hasta el año de 1610 que Cervantes se pudo mantener de tiempo completo a través de la escritura. Fue un tío de su esposa el que lo hizo famoso. Fue esta persona quien lo inspiró a crear la famosa obra de Don Quijote. El hombre de Cer-vantes de La Mancha era una persona vieja y muy delgada, con un caballo viejo y también muy delgado, quien estaba enamorado de las historias llenas de valentía de los días de antaño. Don Quijote llegó a creer que él era uno de los caballeros de la edad media (el esquizofrénico de Don Quijote fue la primera persona en recrear eventos históricos). Cervantes escribió la primera parte de esta novela en 1605 y la segunda parte en 1615.

Hechos curiosos de Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra:

• Cervantes murió unos meses después de la muerte del escritor de obras literarias William Shakespeare, en el año de 1616.

• Su obra fue completamente olvidada durante toda una generación. Fue redescubierto por escritores ingleses a fi nales del siglo XVIII.

• Segismundo Freud se vio ampliamente infl uenciado por el “Coloquio de los perros” de Cervantes. Freud llegó a aprender español para comprenderlo mejor. Freud llamó a esto el origen del psicoanálisis.

To be an effective parent, it’s important to balance caring for your children, caring for the household, and caring for yourself. Is it really possible? How can you do it?

FACTORS THAT MAY CONTRIBUTE TO BEING OUT OF BALANCE:

• You don’t feel you have the right to attend to your needs because your parents didn’t.

• You’re not working full-time or you’re a stay-at-home parent, so you feel you can’t spend money on a sitter, or you don’t have extra money for things that aren’t necessary.

• If you’re working away from home, you feel guilty taking any time for your-self since you don’t see your family as much as you would like.

• You feel pressure from others or from your inner taskmaster to do more or to be perfect.

• It’s hard for you to set limits on your children’s demands, especially if you’re working and don’t want them to be angry with you.

• You don’t have enough support from family or friends. Perhaps you have trouble asking for help, or you don’t have any relatives living near you.

• If you’re a single parent, you don’t feel you have time or energy for romance. If you have a partner or spouse, you may be out of practice being intimate.

TIPS TO BALANCE THE SCALES:• Understand your temperament, and

look more objectively at your needs. If you’re slow-to-adapt or sensitive type of person, take time to transition from work to family. Reflect on your day for a few minutes before you go inside your home. If you’re a high energy or intense type of person, chances are you need more time for exercise. If you can’t go to a gym, figure out ways to incorporate ac-tivity into the time you spend with your

kids. When you’re tired at the end of the day, take a walk, or dance. It just may help you feel better.

• Observe the way things work at your house. How do you spend your time? What are the “time drains”? What’s missing?

• Keep a journal to clarify your needs. Note your likes, dislikes, and priorities.

• Visualize how you would like things to be. Maybe you would like to see your spouse feeling relaxed and spending time with you, or doing more of the housework or cooking.

• Say “no” to spending time with people you don’t enjoy, unless it’s absolutely necessary.

• Have family meetings to express your feelings, establish goals, and to listen to and tend to the needs of your family.

• Take time for self-care, even if it’s 10 minutes a day. Turn the phone and computer off, take some deep breaths, and remember that for which you’re grateful.

Reach out to other parents for sup-port. Building community is a gift for you and for your children, and a way to find balance in your life. Busque el apoyo de otros padres de familia. El ser parte de una comunidad es un regalo para usted y para sus hijos, tanto como una manera de encontrar el balance en su vida.
