Music in Worship: 3rd Sunday of Advent, December 17, 2017 Introit: O Radiant Dawn (James MacMillan, b. 1959)O Radiant Dawn, splendour of eternal Light, Sun of Justice: come, shine on those who dwell in darkness, and the shadow of death.Isaiah had prophesied, “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shone.”
–Antiphon for December 21
Anthem: Hodie Christus natus est (Giovanni Gabrieli, 1557-1612)Hodie Christus natus est Gloria in excelsis Deo, alleluja.hodie Salvator apparuit: Today is Christ born;hodie in terra canunt Angeli, today the Saviour has appeared;laetantur Archangeli: today the Angels sing, hodie exsultant justi, dicentes: the Archangels rejoice; today the righteous rejoice, saying: Glory to God in the highest. Alleluia! –Gregorian antiphon for Christmas
About this morning’s organ and choral musicThis morning’s choral music is distinctly Christmas rather than Advent in tone, and provides a little preview of this evening’s Carols by Candlelight service, one of the highlights of our church’s musical year! James MacMillan is one of today’s more significant choral composers. His Strathclyde Motets (from which this morning’s introit is drawn) set traditional texts from the Church Year; “O Radiant” is one of the “Great O” antiphons prop-er to the seven days prior to Christmas. Giovanni Gabrieli’s works are the apogee of the Venetian polychoral school. As Director of Music at St. Mark’s Basilica, Gabrieli continued the received tradi-tion of composing for multiple choirs of instrumentalists and singers placed in the various galleries within that magnificent church. The effect is otherworldly: in Hodie Christus natus est, we truly feel that we are hearing choirs of angels proclaiming Christ’s birth from heaven itself. Sigfrid Karg-Elert (1877-1933)’s 66 Choral Improvisations, op. 65 represent a wealth of colour and invention. They include all the traditional chorale prelude genres of trio, fugue, free fantasia, motet-style, etc., adding the composer’s typi-cally eccentric twists to each. Andrew Carter (b. 1939) began his career as a professional singer at York Min-ster, before moving into conducting and composing. His works are well-written yet accessible; the Toccata on Veni Emmanuel is based on the French symphon-ic toccata tradition, in which the theme is presented in longer notes, with virtuo-sic accompanimental figures. -JO Next in Music at St. Andrew and St. Paul…THIS EVENING, Sunday, December 17 at 7:00 p.m.: 45th Carols by Can-dlelight. A traditional service of lessons and carols, this solemn, joyous celebra-tion of Christmas in Word and music is one of the many highlights of our church family’s Christmas celebration. Directed by Jean-Sébastien Vallée, with organist Jonathan Oldengarm. The evening’s freewill offering supports the church’s music ministry.

Syrian Sponsorship Update On October 11, Hanan and Fadia Zidan and their families were interviewed at the Canadian Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon, for the final stage of the acceptance process. They have met the requirements for resettlement and they will be coming to Canada! This is, indeed, wonderful news! The slight downside is that it could be another four to six months before they actually get here! There are still papers to verify and sign, and flights to arrange with the IOM (International Organization for Migration, an inter-governmental UN agency).
In January we will be meeting with Action Réfugiés Montréal and Salam Zidan (the sister living in Laval) to discuss a timeline for the search for apartments, furniture, clothing and the many household items. We have paperwork to be completed as well as finding sources of assistance for the young son who has developmental issues.
We are very pleased that, back in 2015, so many of you made commitments to offer assistance in the fields of education, furniture and housing, transportation, employment, friendship and greeting, medical expertise and translation. The delays in getting to this stage have been disheartening, considering the hardships our families are enduring, but we thank you for your ongoing interest and concern. We will be reaching out to you again very soon for help in all these areas. And a note to ask that, if you have, or will have furniture and household items to donate, please hang on to them! We can’t store things at the moment but they will be needed soon!
As well, we will post Sunday bulletin lists of immediate and long-term needs. Please be open to offering your help and expertise to this humanitarian effort on the part of The Church of St Andrew and St Paul.
Thank you. The Refugee Sponsorship Core Committee
