New Year’s Study Group: “Sir Gawain and the Christian Journey” Just after Christmastide, during the mirth and feasting of the New Year, a visitor arrives at the court of King Arthur, a great knight upon a great steed, both of them green from head to toe. The Green Knight’s challenge draws Sir Gawain, the best of Arthur’s knights, on a year-long Christian journey that is both delightful and profound.

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is a beautiful tale of resolution, temptation,

courage, humility, faith, and Christian journeying — an excellent companion as we seek to hold firm to our own New Year’s commitments, to deepen our Christian faith, and to “put on the whole armour of God.”

Four Thursday evenings (January 25, and February 1, 8, and 15); Session Room; 7:00 – 8:30. Excerpts from the tale will be provided and narrated. For more information, please contact Rev. Diviney ([email protected]).

  • Music in Worship: January 21, 2018Introit: Jubilate Deo Collegium regaleHerbert Howells (1892-1983) O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands : serve the Lord with gladness, and come before his presence with a song. Be ye sure that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and speak good of his Name. For the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting: and his truth endureth from generation to generation. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

–Psalm 100, Canticle for Mattins, Book of Common Prayer

Anthem: Zadok the PriestGeorge Frideric Handel (1685-1750)

Zadok the Priest, and Nathan the Prophet anointed Solomon King. And all the people rejoiced, and said: God save the King! Long live the King! May the King live for ever, Amen, Alleluia.

    –Based on 1 Kings 1:38–40

About this morning’s choral and organ music...

Herbert Howells began to seriously compose music for the church in 1944, when he served as the choir director at King’s College, Cambridge, England. His association with that collegial city, which lasted until the end of the war in 1945, was a productive and happy period for him, and led directly to the works for which he is most remembered. Two such works are this morning’s Jubilate Deo (from the morning service canticles written for King’s), and the Communion service set for the same institution. The latter remains one of the best known and most admired of the many settings of the Anglican liturgy.

Zadok the Priest was written for the Coronation of King George II in 1727, and is a setting of a text that has been used at every English (and then British) coro-nation since that of King Edgar at Bath Abbey in 973 AD. Handel’s masterpiece had an inauspicious public start, however, as the choir of Westminster Abbey allegedly sang it at the wrong moment during the service, and had ended one of the other anthems in the same service “in confusion.”

Jules Grison (1842-96) was organist of Rheims Cathedral. His Toccata en fa majeur is a classic Romantic “message” piece filled with drama, virtuosity and pathos, beginning dramatically in the minor mode and ending triumphantly in a chorale and flourish. - JO Next in music at St. Andrew and St. Paul

This morning we welcome the Harvard University Choir, Associate Organ-ist Tom Sheehan, and Conductor Edward Elwyn Jones as musical guests in our service. They will sing a choral prelude to the service, and also join our choir in singing the introit and anthem, hymns and choral amens.

For over 180 years the Harvard University Choir has provided a unique opportunity for student singers to perform choral literature at the highest level, both in concert and during the services of the Memorial Church. Its program of daily choral services, broadcasts, tours, commissions, and recordings make it one of the premiere college chapel ensembles in the United States. Highlights of recent seasons include concert performances of Haydn’s The Creation, Bach’s St. John Passion and Mass in B Minor, Handel’s Athalia, Saul, and Messiah, Mozart’s Requiem and Mass in C Minor (in completions by Harvard Professor Robert Levin), Roxanna Panufnik’s Westminster Mass, Alice Parker’s Melodious Accord, Stephen Paulus’s The Three Hermits, Benjamin Britten’s St. Nicolas, and the world premiere of composer-in-residence Carson Cooman’s The Acts of the Apostles. Committed to the presentation of new works, the group has premiered works by today’s most prominent composers, including David Conte, Tarik O’Regan, Alice Parker, Daniel Pinkham, Craig Phillips, and John Rutter. The choir’s many recordings have received critical acclaim and its newest album, Spring Bursts Today – A Celebration of Eastertide – is available as a FREE digital download from its website, memorialchurch.harvard.edu.

    Celebration Sunday Charitable Partners

The Guild and the Mission and Outreach Committee are very pleased to celebrate our charitable partners today. Please take the time to visit and talk with their representatives to learn about and engage in the important work each does in our urban community.

Henri Nouwen writes, “Those who are marginal in the world are central in the Church, and that is how it is supposed to be! Thus we are called as members of the Church to keep going to the mar-gins of our society. The homeless, the starving, parentless children, people with AIDS, our emotionally disturbed brothers and sis-ters—they require our first attention.”

Our Charitable Partners are Action Réfugiés Montréal, Auberge Madeleine, Chez Doris, Elizabeth House, Fondation CRDM, Generations Foundation, Isaiah 40 Foundation, L’Abri en ville, Maison Flora Tristan, Montreal Children’s Library, Montreal Diet Dispensary, The Open Door, Presbyterian College, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Homes Foundation, St. James Drop-In Centre, Tyn-dale-St Georges Community Centre, Montreal Walks for Mental Health, Auberge Transition, Christian Direction, McGill Presbyte-rian Chaplaincy

  • Our Youth Group is participating in “The Coldest Night of the Year” in support of the St-James Drop-In Centre on February 24, and are asking for sponsors. You can fi nd our team on the “Coldest Night of the Year website--Montreal downtown” and locate the A&P Youth Group Team. You can choose to donate to the team or to an individual. Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day) is the day in February or March imme-diately preceding Ash Wednesday which is celebrated in some countries by consuming pancakes, and also the last day of “fat eating” or “gorging” before the fasting. The day takes place each year exactly 47 days before Easter Sunday and is traditionally celebrated by eating pancakes in order to use up rich indulgent foods such as sugar and milk before the 40-day fasting season begins.

Please join us today as we celebrate and give thanks for the wonderful work that our Charitable Partners do in our community.
