“Meeting via Zoom” President’s Report Dear Rotary Friends and Friends of Rotary

Last week it was so good to see PDG Ian Jones pop his head into our Zoom meeting. Whilst it was brief it was still amazing to see him and know that he will be returning home to Townsville within the next month.

Thank you also to Denis ‘Dingo’ Dryden for entertaining us so well. It brought back memories for me when I was a Rotarian in Alstonville near where he resides. Thank you also to AG Trevor for arranging this guest appearance.

This past week I was able to complete the Octopus’ for Preemie Babies for our Townsville Hospital Maternity Section. Another Club project completed.

A reminder for Board members to get your annual reports to Secretary Jim by the first week in June please. It takes some time to compile the Annual Report and we all appreciate what Trish does to make this happen each year. Thank you, Trish.

Albert Einstein once said, ‘In the middle of every difficulty lies an opportunity’.

This social distancing has certainly been difficult for so many. In this though, many have been able to create opportunities to do those things which have been put aside for so long. I know I have been able to tick off so many things, albeit there are so many still to do!! Thank you to everyone in Mundingburra Rotary - we have stayed connected in different ways and we are hoping that very soon we may be able to meet again across a table and enjoy each other’s company and friendship.

A reminder of our Board meeting on Tuesday 26 May - it will be an opportunity for our current Board members and Shane’s Board for 2020-2021 to come together and embark on a time of sharing and planning. Only 5 weeks to go until the end of this Rotary year - not that I am counting. As from 1 July, we will, all together, support Shane as he leads us into a new Rotary year.

Please stay safe and keep well

Thank you for being my Rotary family

Sue

Bill Muguira 31yrs 25th Last Week in Review The pre meeting catch up started at 6.00 with members starting to log in.

The meeting started proper at 6.30 with chair Kat bringing the meeting to order. She then introduced Dr. Alan who recited the 4 Way Test. At the start of the meeting we had 27 members logged in.

President Sue starting her address to the club with greeting to the guest Denis “Dingo” Dryson. Sue then mentioned that it was Micky mouse’s birthday. Sue in her youth was a member of the micky Mouse club in her home town and shared a couple of memories with the club. Her thought of the day “let’s have fun”.

Assistant DG Trevor introduced the guest speaker, Dingo Dryson. Dingo is a bush poet and performer of some note. Trevor met Dingo some years ago when he performed in Townsville. From country NSW, Dingo spoke of how he got his name Dingo. He was performing at the world expo in Spain in’92 and was given the name then. He started his set with the song” welcome any time. Dingo followed up with, “: bring out the Fiddles, then a poem about Uncle Bob. A couple more songs followed, “My Country, a song about is mother in law” Viper in the Grass”, Home among the Gum

trees and finished his set with the John Williamson classic “True Blue”. What a great treat!

Kat then introduced Jan who spoke to the club about her trips overseas last year, flying the flag for Mundingburra Rotary around the world. Her trip to Kenya fitting hands to people who has lost their hands. Very sad to hear that a lot of the times the situation is caused by domestic violence. Jan also travelled to Timor Leste with the DG study tour, Jan travelled to the New York ground zero as well as other places in the USA with Rotary

Last Week in Review

DG Ron was then introduced to the meeting who enlightened us with tips on the how to hold a successful Zoom meeting. Ron followed up with a very funny Blond joke. A bit different this one, the blond was the smart one!

John hall was then introduced to the club to inform us about the ongoing employment situation in Townsville. Some very interesting fact about the backpacker situation and the effects of social distancing with accommodation for the backpackers.

Robin Jones then led our international toast to a ROMAC. Robin has worked in ROMAC for some time and this toast was well received.

President Sue then gave her closing remarks and drew the scratchie which was won by visitor, Rob Taviani.

Last Week in Review Sue then gave us her thought for the week, a quote from Walt Disney. “If you can dream it, you can do it.”

The meeting was closed at 7.30.

See you next week.

Joke of The Week A drunk falls into one of the fountains at Trafalgar Square. Floundering around he looks up and sees the statue of Nelson standing on his column. “Don’t jump he says, this is the shallow end”.

“The 4 Way Test” Of the things we think, say or do. 1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER

FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

“100 Rotary Quotes”: 1972-73 Roy D. Hickman (photoengraving), Rotary Club of Birmingham, Alabama, USA. Rotary vision: That clubs and individuals Take a New Look at service and act on their findings. “What has been accomplished by others is now Rotary history. It is our time to add to our glorious history. What is said of us in the future will be determined by you and me.” - Address to 1972 Rotary Convention, Houston, Texas, USA

“The Object of Rotary” Is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: First: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; Second: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society; Third: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business and community life; Fourth: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace, through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

What about me - One Picture? Hi Everyone, This week marks commencement of a new weekly segment in the Spinifex. Titled ‘What About Me - One Picture’ it follows on from the successful ‘Five Minutes with a Member’ item we ran last year. It is designed to help each of us get to know our fellow Mundingburrians a little better. The idea is for each member to provide one picture of themselves (any aspect they wish eg serious, humorous etc) accompanied by a few words to explain briefly the context/significance of the photo to them and their life. To get things started I have provided a picture this week. I look forward to receiving and then publishing some fantastic and interesting pictures about other members of the club over the coming weeks. Cheers, Membership Director Neil

Who: Björn Ulvaeus from ABBA (AKA Neil Andrews - sans moustache) When: 2006 (I think) Where: Townsville (Lavarack Barracks Army Base) What: Launching Relay for Life at a QLD Cancer World’s Biggest Morning Tea Why: Seemed like a good idea at the time! What you cannot see: • Mundingburra Rotary supported and participated in the annual Cancer Council Queensland Relay for Life for

more than a decade. • For much of that time Mundingburra Rotary worked in partnership with Neil’s Defence work colleagues and

contractor raising over $100,000 for vital cancer research. • The theme for Relay for Life in 2006 was ‘back to the 70’s’ hence the ABBA theme. • The pants hired as part of the costume were very tight, so much so, the launch speech was two octaves higher

than normal! • Neil’s launch speech was unusual in that it was entirely made up by stringing together ABBA song titles. • No, that isn’t my real hair (moustache accepted)!
