TO SOME, IT’S THE ‘forgotten’ hospitalcommittee. The name has changed a few times, but this committee is still very much alive anddefinitely kicking! And they’re still on a missionto save our local healthcare!

Formerly known as the ‘Stand Alone Hospital’Committee, they now have a new name: ‘TheCommittee Promoting Better Health CareLocally’.While the name is a bit of a tongue-twister, the essence of their mission remains clearand sharp. It hasn’t however, been easy. Not onlydo they have to fight ‘The Powers That Be”, theymust also overcome the public’s perception thatan ‘independent’ local hospital isn’t possible.

For the past year, they have been examining ourarea’s emergency services and comparing themagainst other communities with similar makeups.Their findings show significant differences in thelevels of healthcare across our province – differ-ences where we come out a distant poor cousinto our ‘neighbours’ elsewhere.

There’s also been some contro-versy and misinformation righthere at home. When CommitteeChair Jim Jackson approached theMMHA Board of Directors toprovide an update, the Boarddeclined to meet with him – dueas it now seems, to an unfortunatemisunderstanding. Thecommittee has also withdrawnfrom further participation withthe Central Algoma Rural Health-

Little Current Hospital provides 16 beds, 2 Combined Care,a 24 Hour Emergency department and day surgery, 8 doctorson staff, with a helipad for patient transfers in more seriouscases.

Mindemoya Hospital has 14 beds, 6 doctors and also has ahelipad. The Gore Bay Emergency Centre, with 2 doctors, isvery similar in all aspects to our own Matthews MemorialHospital. The combined hospitals operate a full range ofmedical and community services.

Not far from Manitoulin is the Blind River District HealthCentre, which boasts a 24 hour Emergency department, 16beds in private and semi-private rooms, plus 2 critical care, 2pediatric and a palliative care room. In addition to a fullEmergency department, the Blind River Health Centre is alsoa ‘full service’ facility.

Perhaps the most noteworthy comparison is the MattawaHospital, which provides a wide variety of services –including 24 hour Emergency care, to a population smallerthan our own, in a community that’s closer to the North Bayhospitals than Matthews Memorial Hospital is to the SaultArea Hospital.

“All these things are major concerns!” stated Austin MacKay,owner of MacKay’s Island Pharmacy. “We’re not trying to be

flowery or showy …. these are the facts! Areas with similarpopulations to ours HAVE those services. We’re not lookingfor anything special here. Services here should be no differentthan in any other community. Are we not entitled to some-thing that would give our population the treatment andservices we require?”

“Ask yourself!” challenges Jim Jackson, “Are your tax dollarsworth any less than anyone else’s? Of course not!”

Austin continues: “In order to get the ball rolling, we need togenerate grass roots support, which is the only thing that isgoing to make the people in the political positions – theLHIN, the mayors and the MPPs pay attention to what isgoing on.

We want to get the people that are being served to beeducated about the facts – what is available in other areas. They must stand up for themselves and say that we are enti-tled to services no different from what is being provided incentres like Mattawa.”

Vice Chair Keith Barlow agrees, having been in close contactwith the CEO of the Mattawa hospital. “He can’t understandwhy we have NOT gone after all these services. They(Mattawa) offer all kinds of services and partner with North

Bay on some. The population of their area is4,000 – less than ours!”

“We can still pair up with Sault Area Hospitalon some services like they do.” continued Keith.“All we seem to get around here is a negativeattitude from people. All they can see is that wecan’t have it because of this or because of that. Not that we NEED it!”

Perhaps the greatest obstacles are the fears ofour residents. Many are concerned about howsuch services could be paid for. Keith’s answerwas quick. “The same way that Mattawa was –by government funding!”

“The government healthcare dollars to supportthe population in our area presently go to theSault Area Hospital, which spends only a smallportion of that money in providing serviceshere. Those healthcare dollars can be re-claimed, with 100% spent here – not in theSoo.”

The Committee wants people to know andunderstand that the misconception that‘funding is not available’ is just that … amisconception. They maintain that funding ISpossible, both from government and other, local sources for building and operating suchexpanded medical facilities.

The other misconception is that having ourown local ‘full service’ medical facilities wouldmean that the Sault Area Hospital, or any otherlarger hospital, would refuse to treat our resi-dents, in the event of more serious illness orinjury. “Not so!” say the Committee.

“All residents of Canada are covered by theCanada Health Act.” says Lynn Watson, Reeveof the Township of Macdonald, Meredith &Aberdeen. “Your Ontario Health card is not anAlgoma Health card or a Sault Ste. MarieHealth card. It’s an ONTARIO Health card andit’s valid anywhere in Ontario – or in Canadafor that matter!”

“That’s why a helipad is so important” saysAustin MacKay. “In the event of more seriouscases, the patient would be initially treated andstabilized at Matthews, then airlifted to ahospital that’s more properly equipped.”

Of course, none of this will happen if thepeople don’t support the idea of expanded and

Report from East Algoma/Thessalon OPP

In last week’s issue, we left Steve helpless in the icy water, whilehis sailboat, bearing his inexperienced grandson Tommy, wasblown away by the raging wind and waves. Now, we continuewith

Part Two of ‘A Sailing Lesson’by Richard Whitten Barnes

Lake Superior never quite warms up—even on an Augustday—except for the occasional shallow inlet. I began to panic, not only for my grandson’s safety, but for my own ability to lastvery long in sixty-something degree water. The waves werenow beginning to break on top of me, sapping my energy.

A large roller picked me up for a view of the horizon, and yes, there was the Snipe, some hundred yards off. The jib was flap-ping, unattended, but Tommy had somehow stayed with theboat, and worked it back upwind. I could not believe it. My lifepreserver had a whistle attached, and I used it.

For what could have been fifteen minutes, or an hour—Icouldn’t say— Tommy clawed his way to windward, but wasunable to maneuver the boat close to me. After some longtacks, he managed to get upwind of me. I could see that he wasexhausted. So was I. A roller came crashing down on me,turning me over like a tumbleweed. I came up sputtering, tosee the top of the Snipe’s mast bearing down on me. The nextthing I saw was the boat surfing down a wave, its bow wake awhite billow of spray.

In the Snipe, I keep all the required safety equipment: a bailer, flashlight, first aid kit—and fifty feet of throwing line. I knewTommy, his hands already occupied, could never get to thatline, but if he could throw the mainsheet over I might be ableto grab it.

“Throw the mainsheet!” I screamed. Tommy shook his headviolently, looking around the boat’s floorboards. Desperate, Iyelled, “A ROPE!” Tommy leaned down, and snatched up theonly rope he saw—the mainsheet. The boat flew by me like ashot. At the last instant, I saw the sheet snaking above my head.I grabbed for it, but it was too slick for my weakened hands tohold. It was slipping away.

At the bitter end of the sheet, the stop knot I’d made caught my grip. I went under, but held on with two hands, surfacing to see Tommy heaving on the line. He pulledme to the transom, and with the help of a following wave, wrestled me into the boatwith surprisingly strong arms.

The boat had shipped a lot of water, and was rolling violently from side to side, itsboom hard against the shrouds, and boiling downwind. We had no time for celebra-tion. I seized the tiller, and headed for shore—any shore!

“More hot chocolate?” Sarah asked Tommy, as we all sat close to the fire. She gave methe latest of her how could you have taken such chances looks. I ignored it. I was tooproud of my grandson. He had probably saved both of our lives.

We’d found a beach about three miles east of ours, and drove the Snipe up on it. Afamily who had been watching us approach from their cottage was there to meet us,warm us up, and provide the short ride home.

“You should have seen your son handle that boat on his own!” I told Kate for theeighth or ninth time.

“I hope your boat’s okay, grandpa.” Tommy took a sip of his chocolate.

“It looked no worse for wear. We can take the trailer over, and pick her up tomorrow,if you want.”

“Maybe take her out in the afternoon?”

Those words made all the scolding I’d taken from wife and daughter-in-law, bearable.

“If it’s nice,” I answered coyly. “He turned to his mother. “Don’t worry! Grandpa’sbeen showing me the ropes.” His face gave no hint of it, but I’ll never be sure I wasn’tbeing given the needle, just a bit.

PC Doctorby George Skardis

QUESTION: I have a small problem with my new computer.Could this problem be fixed with System Restore?

ANSWER: Theoretically, small problems upsetting yourcomputer should be repairable with System Restore which isrelatively safe for do-it-yourself repairs. However, there is anevil twin named System Recovery waiting to munch up allyour pictures, documents, and music if invoked incorrectly.

The good twin, System Restore, allows the home or businesscomputer to return to an earlier point in time when thatcomputer was working correctly. A simple System Restore isnon-destructive as far as your personal files are concerned.Windows 7 (W7) even provides multiple restore points. Theolder Operating Systems, XP and Vista, have limited restorepoints. There are other new features with W7 System Restorethat I recommend. For example, the ability to ask W7 to createa special System Restore point with your own meaningfullabel. When misfortune befalls, use System Restore to jumpback to this earlier time, scanning the list of available restorepoints for your distinctive label. Beautiful!

The evil twin, System Recovery, can be very destructive. Readthe small print carefully. DO NOT perform System Recoveryunless you have backed up all your files. In full destructivemode, System Recovery reformats your computer, deletes allyour personal files, and returns your computer to factory freshshape. Your computer works perfectly after a full SystemRecovery. Wait a minute! What happened to all my files?Where is my Family Tree program? Oh, no!

Computer manufacturers are never consistent. You have toadmit that the words, restore and recovery, have a similar ring. Also, technical writers have no pity on us poor mortals.Windows 7 offers a Full System Restore on the trou-bleshooting menu. I am pondering whether Full SystemRestore is equivalent to System Recovery. Destructive or non-destructive? Read the small print. Have a good backup. Jumpin.

QUESTION: Right after I joined Facebook, some-onehijacked my Hotmail account. How can this happen? How didthey get my email password?

ANSWER: This situation arises quite frequently because Face-book security is lax. The first warning you receive will bephone calls from family and friends wondering about thosestrange emails with you as originator offering fake Rolexwatches. Avoid becoming an easy target for hijackers. When-ever you join any on-line club such as Facebook, use youremail address, but do not enter your personal secret emailpassword. Instead, use a different password like ‘mypassword’.Take that Mr. Hijacker.

IMPORTANT WARNING!Garlic Mustard discovered on St. Joe!THE ST. JOSEPH ISLAND HORTICULTURAL SOCIETYhas alerted Algoma University’s Invasive Species ResearchInstitute (ISRI) that Garlic Mustard has been found on St.Joseph Island.

Garlic Mustard is a highly invasive plant that can pose amajor threat to the Island’s maple trees, and its Maple Syrupbusiness, as well as to dairy farming and wildlife.

Maria Smith, Master Gardener with the HorticulturalSociety, made the discovery at the Society’s recent Plant Salein Richards Landing. ISRI and the Sault Ste. Marie Innova-tion Centre (SSMIC) staff have investigated and confirmedits presence at two Richards Landing locations.

Carol Smith of the Horticultural Society reports that theseeds could originally have come to the Island on someone’sshoes.

Populations of this invasive plant are extremely aggressiveand spread quickly, on average doubling in size every fouryears. Garlic mustard produces toxins which result in the lossof soil microbial diversity and its associated benefits to thehealth and growth of hardwoods. It also out-competes nativeforest plants preferred as food by wildlife and has beenknown to dominate forest and other ecosystems it invades. IfGarlic Mustard has been eaten by dairy cattle it makes milkunusable.
