our Preface despite being away on holiday

Preface  Dear Friends,

We’re heading for the season of Advent, and like most years, planning is in hand for services to celebrate  Christmas.    But  hang  on  a  minute,  Advent  is  not  Christmas.    The  long  running argument is that we should not sing Christmas carols before Christmas.

Advent traditionally is a time of preparation, you might argue that it has the same function as Lent before Easter.  While it is difficult to keep in mind during holiday celebrations, shopping,

lights  and  decorations,  and  joyful  carols,  Advent  is  intended  to  be  a  season  of  fasting,  and there are a variety of ways that this time of mourning works itself out in the season. Reflection on the violence and evil in the world cause us to cry out to God to make things right—to put death’s dark shadows to flight.

Our exile in the present makes us look forward to our future Exodus. And our own sinfulness and need for grace lead us to pray for the Holy Spirit to renew his work in conforming us into the image of Christ.

Today, the season of Advent lasts for four Sundays leading up to Christmas. At that time, the new Christian year begins with the twelve‐day celebration of Christmastide, which  lasts from Christmas  Eve  until  Epiphany  on  January  6.  (Advent  begins  on  Sunday  that  falls  between November 27th and December 3rd each year.) We are already being bombarded on all sides with advertising for presents,  food, holidays, etc. etc.    It goes on and on.    (I’m writing this  in mid‐October, and already have seen a Christmas Tree erected!)

Advent symbolizes the present situation of the church in these “last days” (Acts 2:17, Hebrews 1:2), as God’s people wait for the return of Christ in glory to consummate his eternal kingdom. The church is in a similar situation to Israel at the end of the Old Testament: in exile, waiting and hoping in prayerful expectation for the coming of the Messiah. Israel looked back to God’s past gracious actions on their behalf  in  leading them out of Egypt  in the Exodus, and on this basis,  they  called  for  God  once  again  to  act  for  them.  In  the  same way,  the  church,  during Advent, looks back upon Christ’s coming in celebration while at the same time looking forward in eager anticipation to the coming of Christ’s kingdom when he returns for his people. In this light,  the Advent hymn “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” perfectly  represents  the  church’s  cry during the Advent season.

It is important, that Advent and Christmas be different, with different emphases, especially on the first  two Sundays of Advent. These need to emphasize expectation and  longing. Without that,  the season becomes one  long celebration without any context  for  that celebration and with little contact with the reality of life that gave birth to the season in the first place.

What the world needs now is, not love, but hope. Without hope, without some sense that this is not all there is, that there truly is a God who will come and restore all things, there will never be much  love,  at  least  not  the  kind  of  love  that  is  truly  Christian.  And  it  is  this  hope,  this expectation  moving  toward  faith,  that  Advent  properly  observed  as  a  preparation  for Christmas can express so well.

After such preparation, Christmas  then becomes the truly wondrous event  that  it  is, not  the warm fuzzy that is portrayed on too many Christmas cards and in the media. Rather, it is the realization that, truly, there is reason to hope and faith in God, that what he has once done in real human history, in real human lives, he can do, and is doing, in the lives of people today!

Am  I  advocating  that we  shouldn’t  sing  Christmas  carols  in Advent? No,  not  really,  if  for  no other reason that there are so many wonderful carols  it  is  impossible to fit  them all  into the celebration  of  the  12  days  of  Christmas!    But  we  should  never  overlook  the  stand‐alone importance of Advent.

Hazel

November  2018

Autumn has well and truly arrived. The days are getting cooler and the clocks are going back. I don’t like to wish time away but, roll on the spring!

At the moment there is just one service per month in the West due to declining numbers. There are now not enough people attending

on  the  third  Sunday  to  justify  the  service.  There are more people moving  to pastures new  during  the  next  few  months  reducing  numbers  even  further.  There  will  be  a meeting after the service on 4th November to discuss the future of All Saints Vendée in the West. This is a very difficult time and we ask for your prayers that the best decision is  made  for  God’s  work  to  continue.  The  Home  Church  group  will  continue  to meet twice  a month  in  various  people’s  homes.  If  you  feel  that  you would  like  to  join  the group, please contact Linda Gorton for more information.

Services in the East continue to be well attended. We still meet in the Salle while work on the church continues.  The work is proceeding satisfactorily though it  looks unlikely that we will be able to return to the church before the Spring and it could even be early Summer.

The final quiz of the year is booked for 23 November

This is the 45th quiz in the series which began in March 2011. Around this time next year, we will be sitting down to the 50th quiz

– has anyone got any special ideas about how we could celebrate this?

  We’re here to help…….

“SOCIAL CHARGES”  Some readers of Grapevine may have been shocked this year to find that their French tax demand includes an amount for 'Prélèvements Sociaux' (Social Charges). You're welcome to contact David and Sally on 02 51 61 05 04 if you've had this unexpected addition to your tax bill and we'll try to help on the basis of our own recent experience. However:

According to www.french‐property.com:  "All pension income is ordinarily liable to social charges on net taxable income,  although the pension income of certain groups of persons is exempt.

The main exemptions are:    *  Those who hold an 'E‐form or S1 health certificate;   *  Government service pensions (teaching profession, local government, civil

 service, armed forces);

*  Those whose health insurance cover is provided entirely through a private policy;   *  Those whose total net taxable income is below a maximum threshold, which is

(broadly) €11,000 for a single person and €17,000 for a couple. The income  reference year for this exemption in 2018 is your taxable income in 2016, as  shown on your tax notice for 2017. Those who do not have a tax record going  back this far should discuss their circumstances with their local tax office"

The all‐important key to your exemption is to be found on your "Attestation de droits à l'assurance maladie" issued by 'l'assurance maladie; if your "Code Gestion" is 70, you are exempt from social charges.   According to www. french‐property.com, not all tax officials are aware of this so you may have to 'fight your corner' as we did.

Pughs’ News - Autumn 2018

1 Granary Court Cottages, Westfield Road, Tockwith, Y026 7PY, N. Yorkshire.

Dear Chris, Doug, Some of you may not have heard from us directly for quite a while, and for that we apologise. Thank you so much for the interest you have shown in our work in Africa over the years, and also, in us personally.

In the autumn of 2014 we returned to the UK (Weston-Super-Mare) to care for Mairs parents... temporarily.... But this soon became semi-permanent as the health of both deteriorated, and then permanent. In August 2017 we gave up jobs and moved from Somerset to Yorkshire to share a house with Mairs parents and to care for her very sick father. The autumn and winter was a good time for us all, and as we were closer to many family members there were lots of visitors for mum and dad to enjoy. In April, Ray became much weaker and we were blessed and privileged to care for him until he died at home in his own bed next to his wife of 64yrs. Menna is now learning to live a new sort of life, and we still live together with her and rub along quite well.... most of the time! She was 90 in April, and we are her main carers, but she is generally in good health, apart from some cardiac problems, and for that we Praise God. She has settled well in the Yorkshire village of Tockwith, finding new friends and fellowship in the local parish church and village groups.

So we, too, are learning to live a new sort of life. Both of us have found part-time paid employment and are beginning to pick up threads of a previous existence. Hence this letter.

Although we are still carers for Menna, she is able to travel to her son in Bedfordshire for short breaks from time to time and can possibly stay at home with other family members keeping her company.

Because of this, we are now planning to reconnect with previous projects in East Africa. The first being a trip to Madagascar to visit the Good News Hospital in Mandritsara, where we worked from 2005 to 2007. Most of you reading this will remember that leaving the work there was not something we chose to do, but circumstances prevented us from returning. Since that time many of the obstacles to us returning have changed and issues that we struggled with, have now been dealt with by local church leaders. We will make a short return visit to see friends we made there and to encourage the existing missionary team, as well as to see the current staff at the School of Nursing and hopefully, meet some of the first students with whom we worked. This visit has been made possible by the welcome of the Malagasy hospital director, and by the invitation of our lovely friend Vicky who works there as an optometrist.

For those of you who have continued to send donations to International Teams UK, we thank you. Some of the money you have so selflessly given has been used to support projects in Madagascar, Tanzania and Burundi over recent years. The remaining funds will partly fund our trip and will enable us to offer financial support to expressed need when we are there. You will remember that you helped buy a motor bike for the Pastor of the church in Mandritsara. This has been a blessing to him and his family, and to the isolated local churches in villages in the district.

We had hoped to combine this trip with trip to Berega in Tanzania, but caring needs at home are best met by going to Tanzania early next year. Our involvement with supporting the School of Nursing in Berega is ongoing and again due to your generosity we continue to support a previous student (Atanasyio) with his University fees as he studies to be a tutor in Berega.

Please pray for safe journeys and good health as we travel, and that our presence will be a help and encouragement to others.

Thank you for your love and care in Jesus name,

and John

Christmas Market 17th November 2018 St Hilaire du Voust

Herewith the details promised in last month’s Grapevine. We hope and pray that you have made a note in your diary to attend, assist if possible and spend, spend, spend!

But as we have said so often, an event like this is only as good as the helpers, the customers and the produce on sale so……… please will you send any contributions to the people below, or contact a committee member or stall holder for collection.

Maggie C. feels her jewellery collection is getting somewhat “tired” having been picked over for several years so she will welcome new contributions, also glass wear of good quality. Space is limited so just the best please.

Dee and Curtis are yet again organising a Christmas Hamper so please contact them if you have a contribution. Should you wish to donate a raffle prize they will all go into one larger raffle as opposed to several small ones, so please tell them also.

The hyacinths and spring bulbs made good sales last year, and pleasant change to the usual stalls, so will be repeated. Please will you plant a bulb, more if you can, as soon as they appear in the shops?

Posters and flyers will be available for printing on the web site, and next Grapevine. Please distribute these as widely as possible, especially to French friends and neighbours.

*Another Plea for cakes, pastries, home‐made produce

I  am  sure  you  have  Saturday  17th November  in  your diaries  for  our  Christmas  Market  at  Ste  Hilaire  de Voust.  This year we will again need cakes on the refreshment

stall to sell with tea and coffee but also to sell at the cake stall which, this time, will be attached to the Refreshments area. But not  just cakes but also pastries, savouries and any home‐made produce.  If everyone was able to provide at  least one  item we would have a wonderful display.  I  hope  you  will  be  able  to  provide  something  ‐  the  more  we  have  the  better!            Please let us know.

Many thanks, Chris Green and the Catering Team

Calling all Singers….again

Hello  again  !        My  name  is  Maggie  Pascoe  &  I  live  in

Apremont.

I  formed  an  association  Energie  musicale  June  last  year  to create musical links & bring more music into the area.

This summer we organised la " fête de la musique" & just recently we organised Jazz au château/Music  in  the  Park,  with  the  Beach  Band  des  Sables.  This  is  all  on  FB  page  Apremont‐energie musicale, if you would like to have a look.

In March  this  year  we  (  myself  &  Lisbeth  ,my  communications  officer)   did  a  "  prise direct"  with  RCF  &  Pascale  Lèvrier   regarding  music  &  Patrick  Proust  as  the  other interviewee.

The reason for my e‐mail is that I plan to do a " nocturne de chants de Noël at the foot of the church in Apremont on Friday 21st December.

I am approaching the chorale group in Apremont, but I would also like to create a small group of carol singers to sing some of the more traditional British carols.

My view is to have the singers at the foot of the church with the audience  in Place St Martin.  I  am hoping  to  have  a harp player  as well. After  the  singing,  I  plan  to have  a procession with " flambeaux" up to the Place Calvaire, where I envisage serving mulled wine and mince pies.

Mair Pugh suggested I contacted you, as I am looking for singers who would like to take part. I have spoken to Tonie Chandler, who says she will mention it on Sunday.

I hope you will be able to help with this quest.

Cordialement

This letter from MARGARET KENT is about the Christmas Market and where the proceeds will be going:

Marché de Noël – 17 November 2018 This year’s Marché de Noël will take place once again in St Hilaire de Voust on Saturday 17 November 2018. It is one of the two big fundraisers that we have held this year. We may not have a permanent priest at the moment, but with the kind help of the Reverend Martin Crompton and the Reverend Hazel Door, we have been able to continue to hold services of Holy Communion fairly regularly. We have a ‘Vicarage’ to maintain, along with all the usual costs, payments toward travelling and expenses for our priests, charges to pay the Church of England etc...etc. Therefore, fundraising is essential. It also helps us to work together and socialise and bring in others to Church events. Although we need funds to run the Church, we must also reach out and give to others less fortunate than ourselves as much as we can. It has been suggested by the Marché de Noël group and ratified by the Church Council, to donate some of the funds raised on this occasion to a department in one of our local hospitals. Several of our congregations have spent their last days in the Palliative Care unit within the local hospital in La Chataigneraie. Many of us know of others within our circle of friends and acquaintances who have also spent time there. There are five bedrooms especially allocated to this very important time at the end of someone’s life. The staff and atmosphere are kind, caring, calm and peaceful. Depending on the amount of money that we donate, we will be able to designate what we would like to see the money spent on. This is a very special and local ‘good cause’. Please support the event in any way that you can – donating goods to stalls, manning stalls, helping with the set-up, coming and spending money and telling your friends and neighbours.
