“Thumbelina” As the curtain came down on this year’s Stephen Hill Youth Pantomime “Thumbelina”, Crosspool Forum chair, Ian Hague, came on stage to pre-sent producer and organiser, Helen Delaney Gill with the “2019 Cross-pool Person of the Year” award. The award recognises the outstanding contribution Helen has made to Pantomime, going above and beyond to care about the community, making a difference as an inspirational role model and consistently giving up her time and effort to help others.

Over the years Helen has produced and co-written numerous shows, planned choreogra-phy, organised; costume design, set design, make-up, tickets, decoration, and the seating plan. Her voluntarily contribution to one of our excelling local community groups has given the local youth of Crosspool an amazing opportunity to play a part in very professional shows, and the occasion to express their talents and perform on stage for friends and family. “Thumbelina”, the group’s 52nd production, was based on Hans Christian Andersen’s 1835 delicate story of a tiny, tiny little girl born of a flower, Thumbelina (Holly Swales) who with supporting roles from an ensemble of talented young performers, aged between 9 and 18, in an array of brilliantly coloured regalia, sings while embracing her shrunken size as she journeys through nature on her struggle to escape the grasp of Mr Mole (Estelle Aderhold), with the help of her redeemer the courageous Prince Cornelius (Charlie Shaw) of the Fairies, and a whole woodland of animals willing to help. The tremendously talented cast, chorus, crew and production team, rehearsing since September certainly had achieved an endearing spell binding show with all the singing, dancing ,drama and larger-than-life costumes we’ve come to expect and associate with pantomime. Helen had made a significant effort to make every single person who came for an audition so welcome and to give them the opportunity to take part. Judging by the positive reac-tion from a capacity audience, it certainly paid off. Everyone went home having witnessed an excellent example of musical youth theatre. I enjoyed every minute, a wonderful wonderful Performance !!!

Children’s Christmas Party as popular as ever

On Sunday, 8th December 2019, the Crosspool Forum hosted its 9th annual Christmas party to a sell-out audience of 10 year olds and un-der. Who with their parents and grandparents had come to enjoy an afternoon of fun and laughter, many going the extra mile by wearing Christmassy attire to make the occasion extra special. On hand for this year’s frolics, with his cheeky monkey companion up to his usual mischievous tricks, was the ever popular hilarious Barney Baloney. His clowning about had the children engaged the whole time, laughing loudly loving every minute of being bamboozled by the Magic show and dancing. The event was sponsored by our two local supermarkets; the Spar provided all the nibbles and refreshments and Tesco supplied the raffle prizes. A special big thank you to Father Christmas, who dropped in with an early Christmas present for all the children and to the organisers and helpers for a great afternoon, without whose help the party, would not be possible.

We have a very friendly atmosphere. Our customers come back time and time again. We are one big happy family.

Over the years we have had lots of special times and moments, one being a big cele-bration for being in Crosspool for 25 years. Here’s to the next 25.

What do you think about people using local shops?

Always support our traditional local shops. As the “olde saying” goes “If you don’t use it you lose it”.

How many staff do you have?

I have four members of staff, who all live locally.

Do you think local business is good for the community?

Yes, definitely.

What makes Crosspool special?

It is a little village where the community get together.

You can get everything you need, without having to travel too far.

It makes it feel more like Christmas and more attractive and festive.

Yuletide Crosspool

To help kindle a vibrant atmosphere of good community neighbourliness and hospitality, on the first Saturday in De-cember, local volunteers gathered in front of “Direct Travel” to trim up twenty nine festive firs with shimmering lights be-fore then erecting them throughout the precinct.

This year an extra six businesses had Christmas trees in-stalled, bringing a truly festive and yuletide transformation to the precinct, which in-turn encouraged shoppers to support local businesses and participate in the successful ‘Shop local win local’ raffle giveaway.

As the 12 days of Christmas drew to a close, and the Christmas trees in the Crosspool precinct came to meet their end, on the first Sunday in the new year the trees were taken down to be recycled.

Residents were encouraged to take this opportunity to bring their real Christmas trees, stripped of their baubles, tinsel and twinkling lights, along to the precinct for recycling.

With the bright yellow chipper cordoned off and happily rumbling away, in just over two hours it managed to gobble through some three hundred Norway spruce and Nord-mann fir, sending the scent of pine into the air and a pile of woodchips into the waiting flat back van. (Just a small handful of the estimated six to eight million real trees bought in the UK last year). The chippings were destined to be used as an economical alternative to straw bedding for cattle and the base trunks from the bigger trees were to be put to good use.

Money raised from the generous donations, goes to help improving and promoting the well-being of the community, and to provide hanging baskets, floral tubs and a flag display in the Crosspool precinct. All in all it added up to a very successful event for the community, shops, businesses and the environment.

The enthusiasm and determination of local families braving the strong winds to join in with like-minded members of the community, at Februarys well attended Monthly Litter Pick, helped in removing some dozen bags of rubbish from the highways and byways of Crosspool in an attempt to make our neighbourhood litter free. This monthly community event is growing in popularity, as more and more local people are turning up outside Archers Estate Agents, between 10am and 12am on the first Satur-day in the month, to be part of Crosspool Litter Pick. “The offence of leaving litter (section 87 of the Environmen-tal Protection Act 1990) says that if a person drops, throws, deposits or leaves anything so as to cause defacement in a public place, they could be committing a littering offence. The same applies to litter thrown from cars’’. The S10 Litter Ambassador, Geraldine Houlton, said that litter is a growing concern and everyone is asked to do their bit and keep our local streets free of litter. Everyone is responsible for disposing of their own litter properly, either by recycling at home or in the local bins provided. Local schools are also being urged to get involved in keep-ing our streets clean. Litter picking groups are supported by Sheffield City Council, who provide all of the equipment and offer help and advice to any leaders or volunteers wanting to get in-volved.

Tapton Congregational Church, Tapton Hill Road/Manchester Road, will be holding services to dedicate the new Crosspool Me-morial.

The first and main one will be at 5pm, on Easter Saturday - 11th April 2020, (hopefully outside), is a short service of quiet contem-plation and reflection, with tea and cakes afterwards. The idea being to dedicate the memorial at Easter with less of an empha-sis on 'victory' so the contemplation of what conflict means to individuals is brought to the fore. Then on Sunday 10th May at 2.45pm, the church intends to mark VE Day with a ceremony and possibly around World Peace Day on the 21st September 2020.

As part of the positive initiative and commitment to ensure that the Crosspool precinct remains a vibrant place to shop and dine in Safety, the Crosspool Forum, in collabo-ration with the police and Sheffield city council, has funded the installation of a new CCTV high definition night vision camera. Installed in the Crosspool shopping precinct as a pre-ventative deterrent against crime and anti-social be-haviour, the high quality of the cameras footage will make it easier to identify offenders and maximise public safety. Only the Sheffield City Council and the police will be permitted access to footage from the CCTV and will

only download any footage they deem important enough to resolve a case of crime or an incident of anti-social behaviour. It is hoped that the new camera will give people con-fidence in knowing that evi-dence from the cameras will be readily available to help identify and track offenders.

Many people were disappointed to find that in 2019 there was no Open Gardens Day as part of the Crosspool Festival – this was because people had other commitments and were unable to take part. We hope that 2020 will see a resur-gence of this much-loved event. Barrie

It’s with great sadness that I have to inform you that Barrie Clay a former valued member of the Forum team passed away in early February 2020. A former Police officer, Barrie was one of the original Cross-pool community members, who on June 14th 2003, came to-gether with the Sheffield City Council’s South West Area Pan-el representative David Aspinal, in St Columba’s church hall, to discuss the idea of developing a Forum to represent the views of people living in Crosspool, and on how to work towards bringing about positive change in the area. Out of the 52 residents who attended the meeting, 19 agreed to form a steering group.

Flyers were then sent to all households in the Crosspool area inviting resi-dents to attend an inaugural open meeting on November 28th 2003. Out of the 80 community members who attended, came the Forums Management Committee. At the subsequent management meeting, Barrie was elected as secretary - and persuaded me to stand for Chair. In spite of him sweet-talking me into becoming Chair we worked well together and remained good friends. Whilst secretary, Barrie was among other things instigate in helping the

Forum with providing decorated Christmas trees in the precinct, the S10 corridor precinct traffic management redevelopment, revival of the Summer Fayre, leasing the Hagg copse as a nature reserve and organising the distribution of the Clarion he’d talked me into producing. Although after 4 or 5 years, due to family commitments Barrie had to stand down from being a member of the committee and secretary, he still continued to give helpful support to me and the forum. I was proud to call him a friend; he will be very much missed. Our thoughts go out to his wife Jean and his family at this very difficult time.

Fond of musical theatre and being up for an enthused experience, it didn’t take Grazyna Swales, the organ-iser of St Francis’s dance club long to persuade me to buy four tickets for their latest production. Not knowing what to expect we arrived at the Church of St. Francis of Assisi on Sandygate Road on Thursday evening 6th February with a little apprehension but full of expecta-tion. As it turned out, there was no need to worry. Although simple in design “Musical Mag-ic” was a very enjoyable show with the overall look of the costumes creative and of a high standard. Performing in a limited space with a particular musical theme for each different Act, both young and mature dancers, regardless of being in different stages of dance professionalism, kept up with the routines re-markably well. A poignant moment, being when the Children proficiently danced and sung excerpts from Matilda and Aladdin what can I say other than amazing. Every dancer, musician singer and performer contributed their own artistic skills to the performance, the quality of choreography and directorship was a testament to Sarah Bennett’s professionalism, that she can and did produce such an evening of dazzling enjoyment and pleasure for everyone.

Alter opening times

After four years represent-ing Crookes and Crosspool, Cllr. Anne Murphy has been selected to stand as a can-didate for the Manor Castle ward at the forthcoming May elections. Since being elected in 2016 Cllr Murphy has been busily

involved in the community, campaigning to “Save the Plough” as the Home of Foot-ball, the Claremont Parking Issue, a Monthly Litter Pick, Crosspool Tavern Friendship Luncheons and helping the Fo-rum with the installation of a CCTV cam-era in the precinct. In 2017/18 Cllr.Murphy had the privilege to serve as the city of Sheffield’s 121st Lord Mayor. As a resident of Crosspool Anne’s charis-matic smile will not be missed as we still hope to see her around the precinct from time to time. We pass on our thanks for all her support and hard work over the last four years and wish her every success for the future. Local elections will be held on Thursday 7 May 2020. Twenty Crosspool residents, and eight members of the Forum Management Committee attended, with four guest speakers. Ian Hague (chair) welcomed everyone to the meeting in St Columba's Church, and re-ported the sad death of Barrie Clay, Manchester Rd resident and one of the original committee members - indeed the person jointly responsible for setting up the Crosspool Forum in 2003 and instrumental in the Christmas tree displays, S10 corridor (precinct) traffic management scheme, Hagg Copse lease acquisition, Summer Fayre and Clarion. CHAIRMAN's REPORT 1.Clarion (winter issue) out as usual; and the 2020 Crosspool Calendar. 2.In December the Children's Christmas party took place, 29 Christmas trees erected in precinct brackets - and 300 discarded trees brought to precinct re-cycling event for chipping 3.Easy Exercise and Tai Chi still going strong - please come & join in everyone welcome 4.Forum Orchard (at the back of Coldwell Lane) has had a good tidy up, new tree stakes & pruning done. 5.More flags & flagpoles have been ordered - look out for Varanasi Inn's special design! 6.The negotiations for the CCTV have at last been completed & installation date await-ed. (Keep an eye on Crosspool News for an update). 7.The conflict memorial has be installed at Tapton Hill Congregational Church - dedica-tion date to be decided. It is hoped this will become a focal point for everyone in the area. (Keep an eye on Crosspool News for an update). 8. Summer events being planned - Festival Week & Fayre. TREASURER'S REPORT. John Drinkwater. said the cost of the memorial had been funded entirely by local efforts - no extra needed from Forum funds. The largest expenditure this year will be the CCTV system, and both the tree-shredding event and calendar sales brought in a useful sum. Please send in any feedback about this - plus new photos for the 2021 calendar to crosspoolforum@qmail.com KING EDWARD'S SCHOOL Linda Gooden (Head) said she was "really really pleased" to have been invited to attend, as she feels 'King Edward VII' is a "most remarkable school" of which she felt very privi-leged to be head. She spoke of the diversity in the school, the distance some pupils have to travel to attend, and disadvantages some face. She said there were "amazing results" last year in the external exams, 73% of the Year 11s getting A*C grades, & their A level results were "spectacular". Nine 6th formers have been offered 'Oxbridge' places - though one year 15 had!! and a full timetable of extra -curricular activities is still in place, together with mental health projects, the Duke of Edinburgh scheme , and the students have been given a voice in climate change awareness. . In 2019 they marked the 50 years since girls had been allowed to join the school Cath Jackson (Assistant Head) then spoke of the connection the school has to the local community and how the students have become more respectful towards the area. They

are now involved in litter-picking and precinct tub planting. A working relationship continues with Tapton School and the police. Pupils also take part in a maths challenge, the STEM club.& work with Sheffield University in pro-jects to do with medicine & climate change. They answered questions about the 6th form intake - they are the largest provider in the

area - with A levels & B-techs on offer, about still-idling par-ents' cars, & how foreign trips are budgeted for (- these are self-funded although the school can help-). King Ed-wards VII very rarely has to permanently exclude a pupil for bad behaviour, and finds "with sensitivity and care" and occasional use of an "isolation room" where they can sit qui-etly and complete their work for the day, is enough. ITS OUR CITY REFERENDUM Shirley Foster wanted to bring residents' attention to a forthcoming May event, when every-one in Sheffield has the chance to vote to change the "Strong Leader" council governance system, for one based on committees. Over twenty one thousand people have felt so far that their elected councillor has little chance of having a say on matters of local concern. Councillor Tim Huggan said he had worked on councils where this latter system is in place, and although it is" not a panacea" it is the culture of the whole council that needs to change. POLICE REPORT Steve Reynolds read out PCSO Thompson's report dated yesterday: Burglaries still a hot topic - 14 residential break-ins, 5.attempts, and 1 shed. There have been 9 arrests to date - if you need help to put security measures in place please visit the SYP website. Crosspool is now part of the "Sheffield NW policing team" with 1 inspector, 1 sergeant and several PCS, all based at Snig Hill. .COUNCILLORS' QUESTIONS 1. Re idling buses (as well as parent cars) Cllr. Huggan is working with the University. of Sheffield on city-wide pollution. He mentioned that the First Bus Company has severe financial pressures at the moment and is up for sale. (He did not know the conclusions to the Mayor Dan Jarvis meeting mentioned at the last Open Meeting) 2.New police re-organization - see above - he hopes this will be allowed to bed itself in with no more changes, but the exact boundary between Crookes and Crosspool (& whether we will be with Lodge Moor and Ranmoor & separate from Crookes, Hills-borough, Stannington & Deepcar is not clear). EVENTS etc. 1.the Well dressing on Friday 26th June will start Summer 2020 Festival Week , with the street market on the Sunday 29th and assorted events throughout the week culminating with the Summer Fayre on Saturday 4th July and the Party in the park on the Sunday. 2.Car Boot sales 6th June & 5th Sep.. 3/ Winter floral displays will be changed for summer ones (King Edwards VII pupils).. AOB? 1.The Plough; there have been 200 objections to the development plans - an incredible

number. The site has been "trashed" by the new owner - our MP Olivia Blake has written to the Council about this. 2.It is hoped local MP Olivia Blake will attend an Open Meeting in the near future. 3.Litter pick first Sat in Month Next Open Meeting will be Thursday, 30th April, 2020.
