CLEAN UP CHAMPIONS Thank you to our teachers and the students of our school for improving our grounds so enthusiastically last Thursday.

Friday’s after school community weeding session has made an enormous difference to our gardens.

Thanks must go to Ms Weaver and Mrs Causley-Todd for organising this whole school event. NEW FAMILIES MEET It was a great pleasure to meet up again with our new 2016 families. Our community BBQ was very popular. Thank you to our organisers and their trusty helpers. We greatly appreciate the opportunity to make further connections with you all. Have a wonderful week everyone. Karen Mortimer Principal

STUDENT EYECARE The school is pleased to announce that the Student Eyecare Program will continue from last year. This will include all students in Years 1-6 who have a signed permission note from 2015. An optometrist will be onsite during school hours to provide students with a free comprehensive eye examination that is covered through Medicare Australia. 1 in 6 students have eye conditions that go undetected. This is due to the high level of visual demand on their eyes from books, laptops, tablets and smartphones. Every attendee will

receive a full report about their eye health and a prescription will be provided if glasses are required. The prescription can be taken to any optical store to get the glasses made. MOBILE TECHNOLOGY POLICY SSPS acknowledges that students may need to bring a mobile phone to school for safety reasons. However, they do this at their own risk. All students must present their phones to the office before the commencement of classes and are then to collect their phones at 3pm. Please read the attached Mobile Techonology Policy. Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey aims to help improve student learning outcomes and measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide our school with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school. I want to assure you that the survey is confidential and school staff will not be able to identify individual students from their responses. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 14 March and 8 April. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. A consent form and a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) for parents/carers about the survey is being sent home with students. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the consent form to school by Monday 14 March. The FAQs and copies of the consent form, including translated consent forms, are available from the website above. LOST GLASSES

Has your child lost their glasses over the past year? The above have been unclaimed in the front office for a very long time. If they are not collected by Friday 18th March 2016 they will be donated. A NOTE FROM THE LIBRARY

Important information regarding the Premier’s Reading Challenge Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 Students in this group do not need to complete Student Reading Records – it will be completed during their Library lessons in Term 1 and 2 and I will validate the records at the end. Years 3 – 6 Students in this group will need to independently complete their online Student Reading Records. They will be directed how to do this during their Library sessions this term. Reader survey When a student in Years 3 - 9 logs in to the PRC website for the first time in 2016, they will be prompted to complete a ‘Reader Survey’. The

PRC team uses the information submitted to identify student accounts that need to be merged. Students should be encouraged to complete the survey accurately to ensure they receive the correct certificate when they successfully complete the Challenge in 2016. Tips for parents and carers for participating in the Challenge – see PDF doc included with this newsletter

The Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. The challenge begins on Monday 7 March. During this term the focus during all Library sessions will be on introducing, revising and beginning to complete the online Student Reading Records. The website for the Premier’s Reading Challenge can be found here. Please visit this site and become familiar with the rules and regulations. Students log in using their Department of Education Gmail account and its password. It is a very simple and straight forward process and I am here to guide, help and support each student who wishes to participate this year. There is a lot of information to pass on to parents and students, and in order to keep you informed, I will place a brief update on any information which is relevant and important. MESSAGE FROM THE PREMIER I would like to congratulate all students around NSW who are participating in the Premier's Reading Challenge this year.

The Premier's Reading Challenge allows students to experience a range of exciting stories, and explore issues that can challenge the way one thinks.

With thousands of books to choose from, students have the opportunity to embrace subjects that will widen their horizons and expand their vocabularies.

I encourage all participants to be courageous with their reading choices, and to approach the Challenge with great energy and enthusiasm.

The world of books is certainly an exciting one, and I wish all students undertaking the Premier's Reading Challenge a fun, enjoyable and fulfilling experience.

Mike Baird MP Premier

PRIVACY INFORMATION Two conditions of entering the Challenge are that students may receive a certificate and their name may appear on the Gold or Platinum Honour Roll. Certificates have the student's name and school printed on them. The Honour Roll lists student names in the PRC website only. Names are listed in alphabetical order (not by school) and no other identifying features are included. Students who do not wish to receive a certificate or have their name published on the Gold or Platinum Honour Roll (or whose parents/carers do not wish them to) should not register for the Challenge. These students may take part in the Challenge unofficially - they may use the PRC booklists and can seek recognition in their school community - but they cannot add any books to an online Student Reading Record. If you have any questions or queries, please first visit the Premier’s Reading Challenge website and look up the Frequently Asked Questions or come and see me in the Library. Mrs Kobeleff Teacher Librarian STEWART HOUSE CLOTHING APPEAL The Stewart House clothing appeal is running again. Please return bags to the FRONT OF THE HALL by Monday 21 March.

MEDICATION AT SCHOOL Parents are asked to send any medicine that your child needs to take or apply during the school day, directly to the office with a signed letter explaining dosage instructions. To ensure the health and safety of all students, medication is not to be kept in student’s pockets or bags. SUMMER PSSA RESULTS WEEK 7

DIRECTIONS IN MUSIC BAND NEWS Good Habits All of our ensembles are moving along well now, and we are starting to see improvement in everyone's performance ability. Now is the time of year to be getting into routine and setting up good habits, and parents can be proactive in encouraging the development of good habits at home. Music Diary Every student has been issued a new music diary which should be brought to every rehearsal and tutorial at school. Students will also need to bring a pencil with them, so that they can write in their music diaries too! Packing equipment the night before is always a great way to stay organised for music lessons. A music diary is only effective if it is referred to at home, so ask your child to show you their diary while they practise, and complete the practice record with them each week. Punctuality We get the most out of our rehearsals when everyone is there and turns up on time. Early morning starts can be challenging, but setting up good habits such as having bags packed the night before can help. Please help your child progress by arriving on time every week. Practice It is easy for a student to forget to practise their instrument at home; parents can help by putting in place afternoon schedules, and rewarding students for remembering to practise without any prompting. Quite often, practice can be a lonely task, so sitting and listening to your child play can often be the best motivation you can offer. Every student should be practising as often as possible; beginners for 10 minutes at a time, and senior students for at least 20 minutes each day.

Class Parent Representative Scheme at SSPS 2016

The Scheme is a voluntary system, whereby a nominated person/s from the class collects

permission to collate contact details, and with permission circulate the details, as the Class Parent

Rep. to the families on the list. Families do not have to participate if they do not wish to be

included on the contact list.

Following this, the information that goes home can be a reiteration of what’s already in the

Newsletter (The Scene), reminders regarding class activities, excursions, musical events, and

homework. It can also be used to organise social events for the class, and in particular to

welcome new families to the class.

Importantly, the Class Parent Representative (CPR) is not a complaints handler at any stage,

merely a conduit between the families, the Class Teacher and the school. Staff will either have a

face-to-face meeting with the Class Parent Rep. or communicate via email to send information

home. Information can also come from the school Executive to be included in the emails to

families.

Finally, the CPR is not be used to promote commercial or business products or events, but merely

to promote school activities.

If you haven’t already signed up to be a part of the contact list or to nominate yourself as the CPR

please complete the form below and return to your classroom teacher.

Western Suburbs PSSA Zone

Hi Everyone, What a fantastic day we had today. Our annual WSPSSA swimming carnival was held at Ashfield Swimming Pool and there were several significant changes this year. We made the move to a new venue because Auburn pool was not available to us. We used electronic timing and judging for the first time and our carnival was heats only with final places being given on times in each event. Because it was the first year of our move to computer software we still had quite a few officials ‘just in case’. We discovered we now need people in different kinds of jobs from those we had in the past. Hopefully in the future we will need fewer officials and this should make it easier on schools. I would like to say a huge thank you to Angie Munns, our swimming convenor. She has not only done the usual organisation for our carnival but has put in many extra hours training in the Meet Manager software and entering all the data required to run the carnival. We are very lucky to have Angie as our swimming convenor. Can I also say a big thank you to all the teachers who acted as officials and team managers today. Carnivals like this don’t just happen. They require effort and commitment and you all have that in abundance. Public schools are great schools and it's days like this that show just how good they are. Our zone team will compete at the regional carnival next Tuesday. Let’s hope they have great success. Maybe we can make it three years in a row coming first in the point score. Yours in Sport, Greg Blundell Proud Public School Teacher President & Web Guy
