Mrs. S. Mncube

Welcome to our third edition of our newsletter for the year 2011.. This edition features the July, August and September 2011 activities, Outreach campaigns, Women’s and Heritage Celebrations respectively as well as our Open Day. It is quite befitting to mention that de-spite the crowded work schedules and intense workloads, the EDH Executive Management and our stakeholders still make time to sensitize and also motivate staff through such celebrations. This edition features a variety of activities and it is so touching to observe that our Chief Executive Officer is not only confined to executive functions but has a heart for those that need our time and skills and are less privi-leged. This was demonstrated in her role modeling through invitation and participation with the staff when she rolled her sleeves up to do spring cleaning at the neighboring drop in centre on 18 July 2011. It is worth noting that there is escalating information sharing, health promotion and outreach activities which culminate in the cascading of information to colleagues and recipients of our care. There are infrastructure innovations that have been put in place. We are aware a lot of work still has to be done in phases and we are appealing to our colleagues, stake-holders and our customers to be patient. At this stage the completion of one project ushers the next, while some go on simultaneously. Thank you all for your tolerance and understanding. May I take this opportunity to thank all our colleagues and stakeholders for acting out your obligation so as to align our outputs to the vision, mission and core values of the hospital, district and KZN DOH. May I humbly invite you to synergize towards reduction of the potential and actual shortfalls as a unit..

Arrival at Aden Ab-dulle International Airport, Mogadishu, Somalia on 01 August 2011 Left:dietitians Lyndall Dibben and Sumaya Sooliman.

Pediatricians Dr Amith Ramcharan (Left) and Dr Medeshnie Annamalai

What were the conditions that you had to work under like? What were the different feelings you experienced when you ar-rived in Somalia ? What were the challenges that you had to face? What have you learnt /brought back with you that has changed your perspective on life? Anything you learnt that could be used at Edendale ?If you were given the opportunity to return to So-malia, would you? Why?

Six Questions were posed to our Local Heroes in Groups of two (Dieticians and Pediatricians), and here are the answers that we have received:

Lack of resources and skilled staff, poor sanita-tion and hygiene, bombed buildings and big pot holes. We only got to see patients for one day, yet we wanted to treat the patients for a month. Sadness and shock. We saw how poor and under developed the country is. There was poor infra-structure, yet the country has the potential to be beautiful but humans have destroyed it. See-ing people lacking the basic need of food was very sad. Lack of resources, poor hygiene, having to put our emotions aside and getting the job done, language barrier. Appreciate everything we have even our basic needs. Appreciate Edendale because we have the facilities to help and to see change. Flexible, adaptable, learnt to work with less resources, make the best with what we have, and to treat the patient in the best way possible and not to complain. Yes, because it is a humbling experience. It was hard work but we received a lot more than we gave. It was a life changing experience.

LYNDALL DIBBEN AND SUMAYA SOOLIMAN

Conditions were appalling. On the first trip we setup the clinics in a run down and bombed school. The streets were run down and buildings were bombed. Looking at the people and children, you feel a sense of helplessness and sadness. The challenges were numerous: no water, no electricity, no sanitization, no referral hospitals, no overnight facilities. You need to appreciate life and give, not because you receive in return. With our minimal resources, we were able to cope in Somalia. Conditions were not ideal. Back at Edendale we complain about the resources and a lack thereof but yet we waste so much. So use what we have and use it wisely. DR AMITH RAMCHARAN AND DR MEDESHNIE ANNAMALAI

Edendale Hospital and the KZN Department of Health are very proud of our staff who went to Somalia in their darkest hour, to assist them in their specialized fields of duties. WE ARE PROUD OF YOU!!!!

EDEN DAILYNEWSLETTER

BACK WEEK ACTIVITIES: Medical wards, ICUs, Stores, Pharmacy and

X ray units were identified as the high risk

units due to the “job” involving a lot of physi-

cal lifting. Subsequently questionnaires were

sent to staff members regarding themselves

and any back/neck pain that they may ex-

perience. Despite the questionnaire being

kept short and as relevant as possible, there

was a poor return of them.

It was therefore decided that a short informa-

tive back care and posture awareness pres-

entation be run at the identified units. Post-

ers, pamphlets, pens and key rings were col-

lected from SAPS and distributed during

presentations. These presentations were

carried out by the physiotherapists and in-

cluded good posture, correct patient lifting

techniques and basic physiotherapy man-

agement of back pain.

In addition to the hospital activities, a pres-

entation was done at the Plessislaer FET

and Nursing College. The presentation was

well received by the tutors, lecturers and stu-

dents alike. There was a noticeable increase

in staff members requiring physiotherapy

treatment for their back pain, in the weeks

following Back week

2011.Recommendations for next year in-

clude involvement of the PRO, mass presen-

tation to hospital staff, face to face surveys

and reaching out further into the community.

During back week, Physiotherapists both in public

and private sectors were involved in activities aimed

at preserving the integrity of the back.

The activities involve teaching people in work

places, schools and social places. These presenta-

tions were carried out by the physiotherapists and

included good posture, correct patient lifting tech-

niques and basic physiotherapy management of

back pain.

Educating patients that suffer from back pain about

their pain, it empowers them by giving them a sense

of control over their pain and allows for better com-

pliance with home programs. The activities help in

individuals and communities to cope with their pain

and it brings up change in their behaviour.

To date the active role of physiotherapists during

back week shows them reaching out to the commu-

nity and educating them with regards to back pain

and more importantly the promotion of good back

posture as well as biomechanics, thus demonstrat-

ing the responsibility that physiotherapists have in

health promotion.

This year Annual Back week was held during the 5th to 9th September 2011. Here at the physiotherapy department, a team was selected to plan and co ordinate the Back week initiative.

Dental Health Month and School Health week was celebrated during the month of September 2011. A dental information board was de-signed and put together by the dental staff. This was displayed at the entrance of the hospital. A smaller information board was on display at the dental clinic. This year, rural schools in the Edendale catchment and referral areas were targeted as part of the outreach programme for the dental clinic. The areas visited were Edendale, Vulindlela, Richmond, Inkanyezini, Embo and Mid-ILLOVO. Fifteen primary schools were visited during this month. A total of 3564 learners were as-sessed and referral letters were issued to those learners that re-quired dental treatment. 5833 learners were given dental health education. Mrs U. Ramlall, Oral Hygienist, was assisted by the School Health Team, in each sub district. Advice was given to vendors about healthy alternatives to sweets and chips and practical advice was given to learners and teachers on how to prevent dental complica-tions. The Health Promotion con-cept was reinforced in all schools that were visited during the month of September. School tuck-shops were inspected and suggestions given to vendors at the schools about safe practices to be used when handling food. Vendors and tuck shop assistants were dis-couraged from selling cheap sweets, chips, alcohol and ciga-rettes.

KZN Oral Health in partner-ship with Colgate-Palmolive SA, Edendale Hospital Den-

tal Clinic and Edendale School Health Services

hosted and participated in commemorating Oral Health Month at Ndlelayabasha Pri-mary School in Willowfon-tain on the 19 September 2011. This event involved oral health screening for

learners, referral letters to those learners that required treatment as well as a den-tal display. A tooth brushing programme was instituted at the school. The Manager of

Oral Health Services, Dr Mthethwa, was also present

at the event.

Dental Health month proved to be extremely demanding and arduous due to the na-ture of the busy programme

formulated for this period. The distances travelled, the off

road terrain and the inclement weather made the week even

more challenging. These challenges were out weighed by the responses and feed-

back received from both stakeholders and the commu-

nities that were visited.

The Occupational Therapy Department hosted block

therapy sessions during the month of September for iden-tified children and their care-givers. These children were

accommodated for one week at a time in the Paediatric

ward. A comprehensive multi disciplinary team approach was instituted. The Dental Clinic assisted by providing toothbrushes to 15 children

identified by the Occupational Therapy department.

Thank you to the school

health teams from Vulindlela, Umkhambathini, Edendale

and Pietermaritzburg for their continued support. A thank

you also goes out to the den-tal staff for their commitment.

Heritage is a contemporary activity with far-reaching effects. It can be an element of far-sighted urban and regional planning. It can be the platform for political recogni-tion, a medium for intercultural dia-logue, a means of ethical reflec-tion, and the potential basis for local economic development. It is simultaneously local and particu-lar, global and shared. Heritage is an essential part of the present we live in--and of the fu-ture we will build.

HERITAGE-Heritage is the full range of our inherited traditions, monuments, objects, and cul-ture. Most important, it is the range of contemporary activities, mean-ings, and behaviours that we draw from them.

“I would like to comment on the excellent service, my son Justin who is 10 years received while in hos-pital. He came in for an appendicectomy and was at-tended to on arrival and constantly monitored. The theatre staff were also very good and allowed to stay with him up to the time he went in for the sur-gery and called me when he came out and allowed me to stay with him in the recovery room. Special men-tion to Lauren who was excellent with Justin and made him feel relaxed and safe throughout. A big thank you to all the sisters and nurses in 2F as well. He received excellent care and they made him feel at home in their care,

I would recommend this hospital to everyone and would come back anytime,”

From: Noh Anachunam [[email protected]] Sent: Tue 9/27/2011 10:10 AM To: Mncube Samke Subject: Compliments for a change Good morning My name is Noh on Sunday 2011/09/25 I took my 99 yr old Gogo to Edendale hospital she was not feeling well, I CAN'T KEEP QUIET ABOUT HOW AMAZED I WAS OF THE EXTRA ORDINARY SERVICE WE'VE RECEIVED AND OF WHAT I OBSERVED AROUND THE HOSPITAL because we also took her to x-ray where we received yet another good service not to mention the ward 4F where she was admitted when we got to the ward she had messed herself ,aunt and I offered to clean her (Gogo) the sister told us no and she did it herself (the sister), when we left the hospital I was worried whether she will be fed or not since she can't feed nor bath herself but when we got to her yesterday she told us she had eaten the lady sleeping on the bed next to her confirmed that one of the sisters had fed her and had a bath, but I must say the service we received was something I never ex-pected from a state hospital. KEEP IT UP GUYZ ,IM PROUD OF THE STAFF OF EDEN-DALE HOSPITAL. as I email you now she is still in hospital I phoned this morning to check on her, the sister who answered the phone told me to hold on she went and checked on her and told me she was being fed porridge (her favorite meal). Our main concern as a family was she has never been admitted in hospital before she has always been under the care of aunty (her daughter), but we as a family we would like to thank you and your staff. (I DON'T HAVE A FRIEND NOR A RELATIVE WHO WORKS AT EDENDALE HOSPITAL who did me a favour) It’s a pity because yesterday morning I phoned the local news paper to publish my story but they were not interested, but I did tell them that if it was a complaint \bad service) they would have put it on the front page. Kindly forward my email to the office of Minister of Health, they need to know of your good service not only the complaints. Thanks Sthokozile Ndlovu
