“I keep the LORD always before me; because God is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.”
-Psalm 16:8
“We are conditioned to be consumers, so it is natural for us to ask, ‘What do I get out of this?’ But what if our first quest ion was ‘What is God doing here? What did God get out of this?’”
-Bishop Mark S. Hanson
How often do we stop to ask ourselves why we do what we do as a church? We do plenty. Just look through the following pages and see for yourself. But, are we clear as to why? We’ve always done it this way. It’s only proper. We enjoy it. It’s good to get people together. Answers like these aren’t necessarily wrong, but they have a tendency to obscure the primary purpose of our being together.
“When they are being faithful to their vocation, pastors orient the church toward God,” write Stanley Hauerwas and Will Willimon. God in Christ is, of course, the centerpiece of our life together – the source of all goodness and the motivation for all ministry. Yet, God in Christ can get lost in our busy-ness. So, what if we took a mo-ment at every occasion in the life of the congregation to focus our attention where it belongs, asking:
How does this activity orient people toward God?
A second question is more threatening: If this doesn’t orient people toward God, is it a worthwhile activity for a Christian congregation? This is where the rubber meets the road. The church is not simply a social club, com-munity center, or service provider. We are first a gathering of the people of God, called to bear witness to a crucified and risen Lord, and invigorated by God’s Spirit for works of sacrificial love.
In light of this reminder, I encourage you to do something. The next time you gather with other parishioners at Peace, work up the courage to ask out loud: How does what we do orient people toward God? Then have an earnest conversation, and tell me how it goes!
Peace,

On May 21st, the congregation celebrated the 119th
anniversary of Peace Lutheran Church, sharing me-
mentos of our history, special refreshments and
good conversation. Thank you to the children, Jill
and Dennis for sharing their songs with such enthu-
siasm and joy.
The WELCA sponsored bake sale was a big suc-
cess! Thanks to all who brought the many wonder-
ful goodies! And a big thank you to all who pur-
chased everything! You were more than generous!
A total of $233 was raised. As planned, Peace
WELCA will match that amount (plus a little more) to
send $500 to Katie’s Fund celebrating the 500th year
of the reformation.
What a great family we have at Peace!

Moving Toward A Dementia Friendly Community
What kind of a community do you want to live in? How do you want to feel when you walk down the street, enter a business, go to a restaurant or attend an event? What kind of leisure activities do you want to en-joy? Now, put on the shoes of someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia and their caregiver.
That’s what a “Dementia Friendly Community” is all about. Too often, memory loss results in isolation, loneli-ness and depression, not only of the person experiencing memory loss but also their spouse, adult child, care-giver or others intimately involved in their day-to-day care.
We invite you to participate in a community conversation and brainstorming session around what it will mean to make Pierce County (and the towns and neighborhoods we call home) truly “dementia friendly.” This is an invitation we hope you will not only accept but also share with others you work with or families who are facing the challenges brought along by Alzheimer’s or other dementias. All are welcome.
Please join us:

Peace Lutheran Church opened the sanctuary on
May 20th as part of the National Historic Preserva-
tion Month. A family of four stopped in so the par-
ents could show their two little girls where they had
been married 13 years ago. Some would remember
that wedding because we had hundreds of Japa-
nese paper cranes hanging in the sanctuary.
Thanks to Sally, Leo, Nancy and Barb for “hosting”
the visitors.

Communities in School Food Packaging Project
Thanks again to our youngest servants! Once again they did an amazing job sorting and packaging! They packaged 96 bags of weekend food for Communities in Schools and 44 bags of toiletries to donate to the Puyallup Food Bank. We would also like to thank the parents for helping their children participate in this service event and all the members of Peace for donating food items!
We plan to continue involving our young servants in outreach to our community. Parents be on the lookout next fall for family service project opportunities!
Supplemental Weekend Food Packaging and Distribution
Continues over the Summer!
We will continue this great ministry over the summer. Since the food packages are sent home from school with kids, this ministry has not been available during summer months. But we can help with that! Peace Lutheran will continue collecting and packaging food over the summer and serve as a pick up site for weekend food each Friday beginning June 30th.
Great items to donate to the weekend food packaging project!
Free Summer Lunch Program for Elementary Age Kids
Another amazing ministry opportunity for serving kids in our neighborhood has come to our attention! Currently there is not an accessible downtown free lunch program offered through the Puyallup School district. The free lunch sites are up on South Hill, yet the highest number of kids qualifying for free and reduced price lunches reside in the valley.
Peace Lutheran will serve as a host site for a free lunch program for elementary age kids! We will support and offer free lunch on Wednesdays beginning June 28th for 9 weeks, ending at the end of August. We are opening up this opportunity to other churches and community organizations. With help from our neighbors and the community we hope to offer additional days of our free lunch offering this summer.
Sign-Up Sheets to serve as a volunteer with the free lunch program and the supplemental food distributing pro-gram will be out starting on June 4th at the congregational meeting!
Family Housing Network Rapid Rehousing Ministry
Family Housing Network is a ministry of Catholic Community Services. This ministry addresses rapid rehousing in the rental market. It is a referral program for families. Clients are qualified for the program, screened, background checked, and are currently working with a social worker to accomplish the necessary steps to re-enter the rental market.
So where do we, God’s servants at Peace Lutheran fit into this ministry? Family Housing Network relies on churches to provide temporary shelter to families while they complete the rapid rehousing process and are placed in a more permanent housing situation. The Outreach Ministry Team has been working with Family Housing Net-work on setting up Peace Lutheran as a host site for this ministry!
Family Housing Network is offering a training session for volunteers in the Puyallup area on June 8th at the Peace Lutheran Church site. Charlene Cook and Karen Ekse of the Outreach Ministry team will be attending, but all who are interested in this ministry are invited to come learn more!
Family Housing Network Training Session
When: June 8th from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm
Where: Peace Lutheran Church
Come hear more about this program at the congregational meeting and be on the look-out for more information on how to get involved! If you are planning on attending the training session please let Charlene or Karen know or RSVP directly to Debbie Cato from Family Housing Network at [email protected]
Habitat for Humanity Building on Faith
Outreach Ministry is working on plans for contributing to the Building on Faith House 2017! Our hope is to raise some funds and a volunteer group to do some building!

Keep an eye out for more information on this ministry opportunity!
Just a reminder that during the three day festival, the
street in front of the church office (Pioneer)
is closed to traffic.
Also, the parking lot across from the church is
utilized during Meeker Days as well, so plan
accordingly when coming to church on the 18th!
