WELCOME: Welcome in our Savior’s name – and thanks for
sharing with us today in Christ’s love and peace! We pray that our
worship together increases your faith and joy in Christian living. If
you are a visitor, please sign the pew cards and place them in the
offering plate. If you are not an active member of another Christian church, we
encourage you to visit us often and inquire into teachings and practices of our
church. We’re glad you are here, and hope you’ll join us again soon!
CLOSE COMMUNION: As a member of the Lutheran Church-Mo. Synod, we
practice “close communion”. This was the universal practice of the early
Christian church, not as a judgment of another’s devotion to Christ, but out of
concern that the Lord’s supper not be taken to one’s harm (1 Cor. 11:29). By
participating in the sacrament, one testified that he/she believed Christ’s body
and blood are truly present in the Sacrament. Communing together was also a
2
public confession of agreement regarding the teachings of the Scriptures.
Therefore, if you are not a member of a Mo. Synod Lutheran congregation, we
ask that you speak with Pastor before communing.
Please use the box on the welcome registration to indicate your desire to commune.
PREPARATION FOR COMMUNION
1. I REPENT OF ALL MY SINS AND SINCERELY INTEND BY THE POWER OF
THE HOLY SPIRIT TO HENCEFORTH LEAD A GOD-PLEASING LIFE, IN
LOVE TOWARD GOD AND TOWARD FELLOW MANKIND.
2. I BELIEVE THAT GOD FORGIVES ME MY SINS THROUGH THE BLOOD
ATONEMENT OF JESUS CHRIST ON THE CROSS.
3. I BELIEVE THAT OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST GIVES ME HIS TRUE BODY
AND BLOOD IN THE BREAD AND WINE OF HIS HOLY SUPPER.
4. I BELIEVE THAT, IN THE HOLY SUPPER, OUR RISEN SAVIOR OFFERS
ME FORGIVENESS OF SIN, STRENGTHENING OF FAITH, AND ETERNAL
SALVATION.
AS WE GATHER
Lent is not the most naturally enjoyable season of the Church Year. From the outside
looking in, the mood of the season does not seem nearly as joyful as the excitement of
Christmas or the celebration of the resurrection, which we will experience two weeks
from today. However, there is much in which we can rejoice this day! As we fix our eyes
on Jesus, who comes to us by His Word and Spirit, we behold Him who was rejected for
our redemption, forsaken for our forgiveness, and sacrificed for our salvation. Christ
alone is our joy! Today we join with Paul and believers of every place and time in casting
everything else aside and finding joy—true, lasting, eternal joy—in ―the surpassing worth
of knowing Christ Jesus‖ (Philippians 3:8). In this season of repentance and renewal,
Jesus comes to us and fills us with His very presence and peace. Enjoy!

PREPARATION
HYMN ―Lord, I Offer My Life to You‖ ……………………….DVD
INVOCATION
Pastor: Remembering that we are the baptized children of God, we begin; In the
name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
People: Amen.
CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION
Pastor: In humility and faith, let us come before the Lord, counting everything as
loss for the sake of knowing Christ Jesus, our Lord.
People: We count all things as rubbish, in order that we may gain Christ and
be found in Him.
Pastor: If righteousness before God were to depend on our obedience of the Law,
we would all be lost and condemned forever.
People: But our righteousness depends on faith alone; therefore, we trust in
Christ, who suffered, died, and rose again for us.
Pastor: Confident in the work of our Savior, we confess our sins to God our
Father.
Silence for reflection and confession
Pastor: Father in heaven, be merciful to me, a sinner.
People: Father in heaven, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us
to everlasting life. Amen.
Pastor: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His
sake forgives you all your sins. As a servant of Christ, and by His
authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father
and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
People: Amen.
Pastor: Forget what lies behind! Strain toward what lies ahead!
People: We press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in
Christ Jesus!

WORD

may be governed by Your grace and protected in body and soul; through
the blood of Jesus Christ, Your Son, now and forever.

SERMON ―Rejected by the Builders‖
Text Luke 20:17b ―‗The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone‘?
1. Has Lent become a routine where we just pretend we don‘t know that Jesus rose
and are filled with sorrow and sadness over our sins?
2. The whole thing seems to be quite a downer; what with the dark color and night
services and always talking about repenting of sin.
3. Moses warns Israel not to compromise or become complacent about sin for it is a
―root bearing poisonous and bitter fruit.‖
4. Lent is a time when we examine our hearts to see if there is a poisonous root so
we don‘t become ―the builders who rejected the cornerstone‖.
5. We all struggle with our natural desires to one degree or another.
6. Lent opens the Word of God to shine his light into our hearts, not to condemn but
to cleanse and heal.
7. We dare not rest on our past goodness and begin to coast. You can only coast
downhill!
8. Lent is to be a pep rally that exercises our faith and makes us more fit and strong.
9. Repentance and confession could only happen if we are trusting God‘s promise to
forgive and his power to heal.

Don’t ‘Turn A Blind Eye’
All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from
another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. Matthew 25:32
The Bible says: „All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one
from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. And He will set the sheep on
His right hand, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on His right hand,
“Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom”‟ (vv. 32-34). But here‘s what
happens to those on the left hand: ‗He will also say to those on the left hand, “Depart from
Me”‟ (v. 41). What determines His choice? How does He separate people? Is it based on the
fact that one group was highly moral while the other was loose-living? Is it based on the fact
that one group was doctrinally correct while the other went astray theologically? No. Jesus
said the destiny of all present will be based on one thing: showing compassion to those in
need. You object: ‗We are saved by faith alone!‘ Yes. But as Martin Luther pointed out, ‗The
faith that saves us is never alone!‘ The Bible says that faith without works is dead (see James
2:26). Jesus said that this was the standard by which we‘ll be evaluated and rewarded: „I was
8
naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to
Me‟ (Matthew 25:36). Then He personalized it in these words: „Inasmuch as you did it to one
of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me‟ (v. 40). That means you must open your
heart and respond to the needs around you.
Prayer Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Grace and Mercy that saves me because of Your Son
Jesus. Help me reflect that Grace You give me in responding to others in their need. In Jesus‟
Name, Amen
If Christ Had Not Come
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who
takes away the sin of the world! John 1:29
Scholars disagree as to the exact date of Christ‘s birth. Nor do they know that the Church of
the Nativity that‘s visited every day by pilgrims in Bethlehem, is the exact location of His
birth. Nor can any of us comprehend how by the Holy Spirit, a virgin girl could conceive a
child. But here‘s the good news: you don‘t have to know when, where, or how Jesus was
born, you just need to know why. „For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten
Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life‟ (John
3:16). Only four things matter: 1) If Christ had not come, God would be unknown to us. 2) If
Christ had not come, our sins would be unforgiven. The name Jesus means ‗Jehovah saves!‘
John the Baptist called Him „the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world‟. 3) If
Christ had not come, our prayers would be unanswered. In Bible days you needed a priest to
petition God on your behalf. And Jesus is our High Priest who „understands our weaknesses,
for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the
throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help
us when we need it most‟ (Hebrews 4:15-16). 4) If Christ had not come the first time, we
would have no assurance that He will come the second time and catch us away to heaven to
be with Himself.
Prayer Heavenly Father, Thank you for coming to us in Jesus to save us and give us eternity with
You! In Jesus‟ Name, Amen
The Pluses and Minuses Of Role Models
But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I
worked harder than all of them -- yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me. 1
Corinthians 15:10
We all need good role models. But when you devote your life to being like somebody else,
you risk becoming something God doesn‘t want you to be. Always remember, your ‗heroes‘
wrestle with blind spots and character flaws too. Paul said, „I am the least of the apostles and
do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God‟ (v.
9
9).The same thing with Peter: when Cornelius sent for him, we‘re told that as he „entered the
house, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet in reverence. But Peter made him get up. “Stand
up,” he said, “I am only a man myself”‟ (Acts 10:25-26). If you‘re successful in life, you‘ll
adopt that same attitude. The danger in hero worship comes from forfeiting your individuality
and missing the path God has mapped out for you personally. Some of the lessons God
teaches us may be similar, but another person‘s purpose, gifting, journey, and time-frame will
be different from yours. For example, a friend starts a business and makes money, but when
you quit your job and follow in his footsteps you go broke. Or a co-worker wears something
that looks great on her, but on you the same outfit looks like a sack tied in the middle. God is
‗jealous‘ concerning you (see Deuteronomy 4:24). Why? Because He wants to protect you
from anything that would rob you of your uniqueness, or threaten your relationship with Him.
Bottom line: if you want to be on safe ground, make Jesus your role model and you‘ll win
every time.
Prayer Heavenly Father, thank You for others that can help me and guide me, but help me always
remember that YOU are the perfect model I seek to reflect. In Jesus‟ Name, Amen
Do Something About It!
For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God
prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10
The Bible says God „created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he
planned for us long ago‟. These are devastating times. A billion people are hungry, millions
are trafficked in slavery, and pandemic diseases are gouging entire nations. Each year nearly
two million children are exploited in the global sex trade. In the few minutes it took you to
read today‘s devotional, almost ninety children died of preventable diseases. More than half
of all Africans don‘t have access to modern health facilities. As a result, ten million die each
year from diarrhea, acute respiratory illness, malaria, and measles. And many of those deaths
could be prevented by one injection. You ask, ‗What can I do about it?‘ God answers prayer,
so you can pray for those who are suffering. You can give, whether it‘s a lot or a little. And
you can volunteer. You‘re surrounded by great causes in need of people. And here‘s why you
should get involved: your life is racing by, and if you aren‘t careful, one day you‘ll look up
and your one shot at life will have passed you by. Some people don‘t concern themselves
with such thoughts. They grind through their days without lifting their eyes to look. They live
and die and never ask why. If you want your life to matter, live it in such a way that the
world will be glad you did. You were created and redeemed to „do the good things he
planned for [you] long ago‟. And when you stand before God, He will ask you how well you
carried out your assignment.
Prayer Heavenly Father, by Your Grace and Mercy You have saved me, not by my works but You
10
saved me for good works that You have prepared for me. Help my works reflect my salvation
in You. In Jesus‟ Name, Amen
‘Here Am I. Send Me!’
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?"
And I said, "Here am I. Send me!" Isaiah 6:8
Isaiah writes, „Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will
go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” He said, “Go... !”‟ (vv. 8-9). In the preceding
Scriptures Isaiah was making all sorts of excuses and telling God why he wasn‘t qualified to
do the job. But in God‘s kingdom, calling trumps credentials every time! And the litmus test
isn‘t experience or expertise, it‘s availability and teachability. If you are willing to go when
God gives you the green light, He will take you to inaccessible places and to do impossible
things. Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Esther, Moses, Samuel, David, and Isaiah all have one thing
in common. They all said, „Here am I.‟ Isn‘t it ironic that we spend so much time and energy
trying to figure out how to get to where God wants us to go, when all we have to do is simply
say, „Here am I‟? It‘s God‟s job to get us to where He wants us to go; our job is to make
ourselves available. Like a doctor on call or a police officer on duty or a firefighter on shift,
it‘s our readiness to respond that God is looking for. Sometimes it‘s a simple prompting to go
out of our way and love our next-door neighbor. Sometimes it‘s a calling to move halfway
around the world. But it always starts with the little three-word prayer of availability: „Here
am I.‟ That‘s what Moses said at the burning bush. That‘s what Caleb said when he finally
set foot in the Promised Land. And that‘s what God wants you to say today.
Prayer Heavenly Father, Here Am I. Help me to move forward with where it is You want me to go
and do. In Jesus‟ Name, Amen
Position Yourself to Receive
The way of a fool seems right to him, but a wise man listens to advice. Proverbs 12:15
Positioning yourself to receive – makes all the difference! For example, as you read this, if
you position yourself to receive by saying to the Lord, ‗I will take action on what You show
me,‘ you‘ll benefit more than if you read it just to be motivated or inspired. To resist or to
receive – that‘s a choice you make every day. Nothing dies quicker than a new idea in a
closed mind. It‘s impossible to learn, if you think you already know it all. One of the reasons
Jesus reacted so strongly to the Pharisees was because they refused to receive what He had to
say. A wrongly positioned mind is like a microscope that magnifies trifling things but can‘t
receive great ones. Every situation, properly viewed, is an opportunity. But opportunities can
only ‗drop into your lap‘ if you position your lap where opportunities drop. When you don‘t
position yourself to receive, it‘s like asking for a bushel while you‘re holding a cup. Too
often our minds are locked on one track. We‘re looking for red so we overlook blue; we‘re
thinking ‗tomorrow‘ and God is saying ‗now‘. We‘re looking everywhere, and the answer is
11
right under our nose. When a person is positioned correctly, he or she is ready to receive all
God has for them. The Bible often uses the word simple. The original term means ‗thick,
dull, and sluggish‘, and it describes those who are insensitive and unreceptive to the thoughts
of others. God will speak to you through people, but unless you listen you won‘t hear what
He has to say. So today position yourself to receive. You cannot hear what you are not
listening for!
Prayer Heavenly Father, thank You for forgiving me for all the failed opportunities You have given
me. Help me listen for Your talking through others that you have sent me. In Jesus‟ Name,
Amen
Pray for God’s Favor
For surely, O LORD, you bless the righteous; you surround them with your favor as with a
shield. Psalms 5:12
When you ask someone for a favor, you‘re generally asking for something they don‘t owe
you. The Bible says of God: „You bless the righteous; you surround them with your
favor.‟ This word ‗righteous‘ doesn‘t mean flawless, otherwise none of us would qualify! It
means to be clothed in „the righteousness of God‟, thereby making us acceptable before God
and qualifying us for His favor (see 2 Corinthians 5:21). And that‘s a truth you need to grasp
and hold on to! Why? Because when you have God‘s favor, people start favoring you too –
often for reasons they themselves can‘t explain! The favor of God made it possible for people
in the Bible who otherwise wouldn‘t have amounted to much, to do great things. God called a
teenager named Esther to save the Jewish people. So she stepped out in faith, approached the
king uninvited, even though it violated protocol, and „obtained favor in his sight‟ (Esther
5:2). God made a way for her to do the job He‘d given her. Without the favor of God, Ruth, a
Gentile, wouldn‘t have been accepted by the Jews. But because God had a plan for her life
and her heart was open to Him, she ended up marrying Boaz, „a man of great wealth‟ (Ruth
2:1). And from that union descended King David, and ultimately our blessed Lord Jesus.
What favor! The Bible says, „A good man will obtain favor from the Lord‟ (Proverbs 12:2).
And a single moment of God‘s favor will do more for you than a lifetime of striving. So pray
for the favor of God today – and start looking for it!
Prayer Heavenly Father, thank You for showing me favor – as undeserving as I am, but by Your
Mercy You have decided to use me for great things. In Your Precious Name, the Name of
Jesus, Amen
