Hosanna Ushers Hosanna can use some additional ushers for the 10:30 a.m. service. Time requirements for ushering are two to three months a year. You can select months which fit your schedule. You will be partnered with two or three others, so, if you have to miss a Sunday during an assigned month, you will have backup. You can sign up by checking the box on the back of the green Hosanna Herald insert or there is a sign up sheet on the Welcome Center. If you have questions you can

contact Ron Fess [email protected].

Mending the Divides: How Creative Love Restores Our Conflicted World

Nancy Wales’ notes from a session led by Jer Swigart at the Conference on Worship, Theology, and the Arts at St. Olaf College. Mr. Swigart is the Global Immersion Project Co-founder and Co-author with Jon Huckins of the book, Mending the Divides.

The overview of this session stated: “Conflict, injustice, and hatred seem to be gaining momentum in our communities. The divides between us are severe…so much so that our desire to co-create a just future is being dampened by a paralyzing despair.” Jer shared that there are courageous women and men who are mending these divides. Fueled by their faith, they understand themselves not as “bridge builders” but as “expanse-eliminators.” They are modern-day peacemakers who dare to move toward the radical center of conflict and injustice equipped with the tools to heal rather than to win. Mr. Swigart explored with us how the intersection of restorative theology, everyday peacemaking, and movement leadership awakens our creative imaginations, reshapes our congregational cultures, and redefines our mission in the world.

The question he feels we need to ask is “How do we fuel up with the high octane of faith and then use it in our lives? How do we show up in hard places?” Jer often found with his Christian training that the emphasis was on power (be strong, be in control), abundance (be productive and provide for your family) and safety (protect your family and your possessions). He began to ask, “Where is Jesus in this?” If Jesus is working in our lives, then we need to move toward the challenges, not hide from them. Mr. Swigart challenged all of us to take the journey from simply admiring Jesus to actually following Jesus and his teachings. You never know where you are going to end up!

In Colossians 1:15-20 we read that “through him (Christ) God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things…” Reconciling all things to God means that Jesus’ death and resurrection is not only about our individual salvation. If restoration is the mission of God, then peacemaking is the vocation of God’s people. (Colossians 1:15-20 and 2 Corinthians 5:17-20) We are not responsible for the restoration, but we get to join in God’s restoration. In conflicts, God doesn’t snap his “fingers” and make everything alright. God invites the people to reconcile and to move in the Spirit. We often have been trained that if we are uncomfortable, then something is wrong – backup. Jer believes that if we’re uncomfortable, something is RIGHT – the Spirit is working through discomfort.

Jer encouraged us to see the image of God in everyone and take these four steps: 1. Learn to see the truth; 2. Dare to immerse into the center of others’ stories; 3. Choose to contend (work for justice) in costly, creative ways; 4. Join in the restoration in the world.

Two of Jer’s quotes that made me think of our own culture were: “Consumerism shouldn’t be higher than generosity.” and “Capitalism shouldn’t negate compassion.”

Jer helped us understand that peace is not the absence of conflict – peace is when relationships once severed have been repaired and restored. Jesus said, “I am making all things new.”

November 4-Do One Thing for Disaster Preparedness

The recent tornadoes that struck parts of Faribault, Northfield, and Cannon Falls were reminders that disasters can strike with little or no warning. But how can we prepare for emergencies such as tornadoes or home fires? Come and receive valuable information on how to prepare your family for emergencies. Keith and Jane Johnson of Hosanna’s Red Cross Shelter Team will facilitate this discussion.

November 11 - What Lutherans Believe

This session is intended as an orientation to the Lutheran Church for those who will be joining Hosanna Lutheran Church on Sunday November 18. All are welcome to participate.

November 18 - Reception for New members

We will be receiving new members at both the 8:00 and 10:30 a.m. services on November 18. A reception for and introduction of new members will be held between services. Come and meet our new friends in Christ.

November 25 - Preparing for Advent—Intergenerational Activity Morning

During the education hour all individuals are invited to grab a cup of coffee/lemonade and participate in the intergenerational activity Preparing for Advent (held in the Gathering Area). See additional information on page 7.

New Banners Giving Thanks to God The monetary gifts given in memory of Doris Cortopassi have been used to purchase two new banners as requested by her daughter, Sharon Dunford. These colorful autumn banners reflect Doris’ love of the season and our thanksgiving to God for our many blessings.

Hosanna Lutheran Church

October 9, 2018 Council Minutes Staff & advocate reports were highlighted. Outreach: A greeting card ministry has been started and supplies have been shared with Mt. Olive. The new trees have been watered regularly.

Faith Formation: Communion is publicly open to any age and Hosanna’s 5

th graders will

have their education opportunity soon. Council members are challenged to wear name tags on Sundays to be more welcoming to guests and new members.

Music & Worship: There have been challenges to keep every group up and running. Choir members have conflicting schedules at times but they’re still able to perform. The children’s choirs are fun and hardworking, plus the youngest kids have adult support/mentorship! The 9

th graders are

busy preparing for their affirmation of baptism service. A new worship setting will be introduced.

Support: The Properties committee needs more members. There have been two building rentals, and discussion is taking place about removing the dead bushes out front. We’re still waiting on the parking lot contractor to finish. A new smoke detector and hot water pump are needed, plus the heating and cooling system needs to be checked. There has been discussion about installing temporary walls downstairs to improve storage.

Next Council meeting on Tuesday, November 13 at 7pm.

Respectfully submitted, Joe Desannoy - Council Secretary

(Full council minutes are available on the Hosanna website.)

Book Discussion November 10 (note the earlier date)

All are welcome to join the book discussion group at any time. You’ll read a variety of books, engage in fascinating discussions and enjoy Christian fellowship. Discussions are (usually) held on the 3rd Saturday of the month at 9:00 a.m. Coffee will be on and members take turns bringing treats.

The book to be discussed on November 10 is The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion. It centers on genetics professor Don Tillman, who struggles to have a serious relationship with women. With a friend's help, he devises a questionnaire to assess the suitability of female partners. His plans are set off course when he meets Rosie, who does not fit many of Tillman's criteria, but becomes a big part of his life. Join in the discussion of this quirky, short book that demonstrates the ways in which people navigate the requirements of a meaningful relationship with another person while remaining true to themselves.

The book discussion group does not meet in December. The book scheduled for January 19 is The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend by Katarina Bivald. You may contact Barb Anderson at [email protected] with questions or for more information.

Advent Devotional Booklet—Devotions Due November 16 You’re invited to write a devotion for this year’s annual Advent Devotional Booklet. It’s a wonderful tradition of daily devotions written by members of Hosanna to highlight the Advent and Christmas season. The theme is “Jesus: Hope for the Nations”. Each devotion should be no more than 400 words long and should include a prayer at the end. Please e-mail your devotions to Barb Anderson, [email protected] or drop them by the church office no later than Monday, November 16.

Hosanna’s Pantry November 16 and 17 (note earlier date due to the Thanksgiving holiday)

Come and serve at Hosanna’s Pantry in November. It’s a great way to work together as a family to share God’s love with families in need as they prepare for the Thanksgiving holiday. Children as young as 5 are invited to help with their parents. It’s also a great way for teens to earn service hours. You can help with setup on Friday, November 16 at 10:00 am. This involves unloading boxes and organizing the food on tables. Or you can work during the pantry opening on Saturday, November 17 from 9:00 – 11:30 am. You can help greet families, shop with them, carry out groceries or clean up. There’s a sign-up sheet at the Welcome Center or you may contact Barb Anderson, at [email protected] with questions.

Thanksgiving Baskets for Hosanna’s Pantry

Thanksgiving baskets will again be handed out to families this year. To help fill up the Thanksgiving baskets, please consider donating a pumpkin pie or a giving a small monetary donation to help buy turkeys. There’s a sign-up sheet for bringing pies on the Welcome Center. Please bring your pies to Hosanna’s kitchen by Friday, November 16.

The boxes in which to pack the food will again come from HyVee. Families or individuals are encouraged to pick up a box to decorate with a Thanksgiving theme. The boxes will be stored in the conference room. Please return your decorated box to the conference room no later than Friday, November 16. Your donations will bring Thanksgiving blessings to many needy families. You may contact the church office or Barb Anderson, at [email protected] with questions.

Outreach Ministries “gathered to grow...sent to serve.”

Greeting Card Ministry Early last year the 7

th and 8

th graders participated

in a service project where they created greeting cards for members of our congregations to use. They stamped, cut, colored and glued various forms of art onto these cards and placed them in a box for anyone to use. We also had this as one of our “God’s work. Our hands.” projects and we assembled over 150 cards.

The 7th and 8

th graders went to Mount Olive on October 7

th and delivered a box of cards that we had

completed and gave them to their Sunday school classes (6th thru 12

th graders) and shared with

them a little bit about how this ministry started and how we planned on continuing to make it grow. We shared some fellowship with them and had each of them make a card so they knew how easy it really was. There will be a three drawer cart located in the church office with all the supplies needed to make greeting cards. We will try and have special supplies available for the various holidays. The drawers will be labeled with the various supply contents.

Please feel free to make cards at any time. Completed cards can be put in the completed card drawer in the cart (to be used to stock the card box that is located on the coffee table in the gathering space) or can be taken home for your personal use.

We will put the cart out in the gathering space between services the last Sunday of the month (but again, please feel free to make them anytime.) We will also have a donation box located in the office for card making supplies (double sided tape, colored card stock, blank cards & envelopes.)

Our goal is to have greeting cards available all year for anyone to use. Questions? Please feel free to contact Kelly Gangelhoff @ 280-9034.

Snow Shoveling The properties committee is asking for volunteers to assist in shoveling snow from sidewalks this winter. We would like to get two volunteers per month if possible. They can coordinate efforts as needed. The sign up in the past years has been weak at best, and the duties tend to fall on the same people. All volunteers

are greatly appreciated. There is no age restriction. Shovels are provided in the entry ways, but you can also use your favorite one from home. The sign up list is in gathering area. We only shovel if the snow is less than two inches. Please help keep the entrances and sidewalks clear. Thank you. Contact Guy Griesmann (507-358-0717) if you have questions.

Lefse Making at Hosanna Uff Da! Are you interested in making some lefse? Well we know just the place: Hosanna Lutheran Church on Saturday, November 17th at 1pm or 5pm. We want to accommodate all who are interested. Take your pick or come to both! Need equipment? We have it. Need a recipe? We also have those. Need instruction or training? You’ve come to the right place. In addition, this year we will sell lefse at church on Sunday morning with money going to ELCA World Hunger. There are sign-up sheets and a perfect lefse recipe at the welcome center. If you need additional information, feel free to contact Karla Weis (281-4350), Steph Stevens (259-0767) or Paul Anderson (282-7213).

Nominating Committee Hosanna needs many volunteers to thrive as a congregation. As the calendar turns to November, volunteers are needed for church council for 2019.The

nominating committee is starting its work to fill the president-elect position, and advocates for worship, support and discipleship, plus next year's nominating committee. Please contact a member of the nominating committee if you are interested in a position on the church council. If contacted by the committee then please prayerfully consider their request. Thank you, the 2018 nominating committee: David Wall, Lisa King, Sinde Finnegan, Ruth Vining, Paul Solum

Susan’s Suppers Thanks to our “God's work. Our hands.” day we have a surplus of Susan's Suppers!! I would personally like to see more of our congregation members receive a meal that are in need. Maybe you know someone in our congregation that just had a baby? How about someone who just had surgery? I know we have many members caring for loved ones that might find it hard to find time to put together a meal. I feel that we have many elderly members that would love to receive a meal and the company! If you know someone that would benefit from a meal please feel free to record it in our Susan's Supper binder in the kitchen and help yourself by taking a meal out of the Susan's Supper freezer. If you would rather not deliver the meal feel free to contact me with the name of the person and I would be happy to deliver the meal. My phone number is 507-254-2090 or you can email me at [email protected]. Remember this doesn't have to be for just one time. Meals can be continued to be delivered as long as the need is there. Thanks for your help!

“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, His love endures forever” 1 Chronicles 16: 34.

It’s November already! The crispness in the air is evident, we are moving into a different season here in Minnesota!

November is also a time to celebrate Thanksgiving! We all have family traditions that we keep, and I am sure that many of you will think about those and smile. The smells of a roasting turkey, yams, and pumpkin pie fill our minds with part of the holiday! Maybe it’s coming to our Thanksgiving service at Hosanna on

Wednesday evening and having a piece of pie during fellowship after the service. Perhaps it’s watching the Thanksgiving parades, or the football game, or playing a game with your loved ones.

A few Thanksgivings ago, my kids were not able to be with me. I was going to be alone. I worked the day before and after, so traveling to see my family, who were a few hours away, was not an option. Instead of sitting home, I decided to volunteer to bring food and helped set up and serve those at the Gift of Life Transplant House: folks who were also unable to be home or be with immediate families. My heart was filled with Thanksgiving as I listened to their stories and saw the love and appreciation for the volunteers who spent the day with them! What a blessing! How thankful these folks were! Little did they know how thankful I was for them as well!

During this time, it is a reminder to take the time to thank God for all of the abundance of the many blessings that He has supplied us with. Not that this should be the only time we give thanks, but on this day, I like to take a moment to really thank God for all He gives me.

We all have difficulties that we face: whether they be physical, emotional, medical or financial. We all have burdens and sometimes our shoulders are heavy. Sometimes things completely out of our control can totally overwhelm us and bring us to our knees. But we need to stop, take a deep breath and remember that God is watching over us, in good times and bad. God is right beside us, always helping us with our burdens.

I also need to remember that God blesses us in so many ways! One of our greatest blessings was that He sent us his Son, who suffered and died for us! With his death, Jesus gave us eternal life! And I am thankful for this blessing! I am thankful for God’s love!

God’s love for us is great! Let’s give thanks! His love does endure forever!

Happy Thanksgiving!

God’s Blessings! Lisa

Mittens and More We’ve had cool weather already but nothing like the icy, frigid, biting temperatures we will experience in the next several months. It’s time again to begin collecting winter outer wear for our neighbors and friends who are unable to obtain these necessities for themselves. Please gather your gently used/clean winter outer wear that you no longer need or use. You can also purchase items at our local thrift shops: Savers, Goodwill, and the Salvation Army Store. Most needed items at this

time are mittens/gloves, boots, jackets, and snow pants of all sizes. Please place the items you’ve donated in the box in the gathering area. Thank you so much for donating to this important winter ministry.

Dear Members and Friends of Hosanna, At times it seems as if every day a phone call interrupts dinner seeking financial support for an important cause or the inbox on our computers fill with e-mail requests for donations to the latest charity, or the mailbox is clogged with solicitations asking for donations. Even television preachers make their pleas. Bewildering as this all is, let us celebrate the fact that we live in a country that lets us decide freely what to support. Each of us must sort out our priorities.

God does not provide specific instructions. We are asked to love God with all our heart and soul and mind and strength, and our neighbors as ourselves. (Mark 12: 28-31) Since God needs nothing and we cannot pay for God’s gifts, how do we demonstrate our thanks in tangible ways? Three ways include: the church, the world and our neighbor. When referring to the church, we think of its mission and its institutions. By the world we mean all nature and the orders of creation that support our living, which is a gift from God. Our neighbor opens an endless arena for our concern. We who are Christian and members of churches are not alone in the responsibility for care of the world and our neighbor. Governments also assume responsibility for natural resources and the care of their people. When the Constitution of the United States was adopted in 1787, it was the first time since Constantine ruled that Christianity should be the official religion of the Roman state, that a government no longer took responsibility for the church. For 1,300 years in the Western world, governments maintained and regulated their churches. Many still do. Now, for over 200 years, American churches have been on their own. Separation of church and state is healthy. This means, however, that is our efforts, and our gifts, and our voices that speak for God in our country. By law, our public schools and universities are prohibited from any direct promotion of faith. Our government encourages efforts of churches and even implicitly confesses its life “under God,” and “in God we trust.” But if we are to “go and make disciples,” it is clearly our task and privilege, as churches alone. Eiving Berggrav, former head of the Lutheran Church of Norway, once stated that whatever government policy might be, the church would hold as primal two rights: the right to teach and preach the gospel, and the right to engage in works of charity and service. These are clear priorities for our giving. If we, as the church, fail to speak for God, God is without a voice in our land. May we each in our own God given way, share what we know and possess and give our thanks to God for all we have, and may we fulfill Christ’s imperative to make disciples. Yours in Christ, Pastor Bill Meiers.
