Advent, Christmas and the Election, that’s quite a busy time for many people. Advent is the
preparation for the arrival of the King of Kings. The Election to elect our new leaders, but then
we celebrate the arrival of the most important leader of all, Christ.
I have a friend who is a councillor in Manchester and in the weeks leading up to a local
election she is hard at work, trying to get the message out of why we should vote for her. She
puts her efforts into supporting the local candidate as MP for the general election too. People
up and down the country will be hard at work, trying to get their message across. At the end
of the day it is down to us to listen and either agree or disagree with what we have been told
and vote accordingly. If we don’t vote, we cannot complain about the outcome of the
election.
How much effort do we put into the preparation for the arrival of the King of Kings? Do we go
about telling people about who Christ is and what He has done and can do for us? Many
houses have decorations up ready for Santa coming at the start of December. I have no
problem with this except when the real reason for having decorations up is forgotten. We
have an Advent course to help us in preparing for Christmas. This year we will be looking at
some of the words which inspired Handel to write his Messiah. There are also many
services available to remind us of the real reason for Christmas, from visiting groups such as
the Boot Shop and the school having Christmas services, to our own church services. Please
see the centre pages for details which will be correct at the time of going to press. Up to date
details can be found on the weekly newssheet or on the website.
Advent is a time for self-reflection, self-denial, and for preparing ourselves to celebrate the
coming of Christ. Sometimes it seems to be about seeing how many chocolates that are found
in the Advent Calendars we can eat. It is time to think and tell others about our leader, our
Servant King. No doubt the politicians will give both positive and negative ways of putting a
message across over the coming weeks and maybe we can learn something from them around
us about promoting our faith.
I am fortunate that my friend is a Christian and puts as much effort into her faith and
supporting her church as she does being a councillor so she is a huge asset to the church. At
this time of promoting views, how can we promote Christ within our community with His
message of peace?
Have a blessed and peaceful Christmas.
Albania, Ukraine, Central Asia, Liberia, Nigeria and the Middle East … shoeboxes really do go to
the ends of the earth … and your donations help defray the cost of sending them to their
far flung destinations.
The Samaritan’s Purse Christmas Shoebox Appeal
produced a record response in Easingwold this year –
enabling us to send 159 shoeboxes (plus a surplus £90
donation for transport) to some struggling countries in
the world.
This is once more a splendid collaborative effort by St
John’s Easingwold, St Mary’s Raskelf and St John the
Evangelist Roman Catholic Church as well as by many
individuals in the community. I should like to thank everyone who packed a box, those who
made a donation, and those who provided woollies (e.g. the Knit & Natter group at Springhill
Court) and other goodies as box fillers. I am grateful to Chris and Ian Peel and Margaret
Summerscales for their help and of course our children who are always eager to be
photographed!
We all like the idea of random acts of kindness and
generosity and these are the concepts children often
acquire when helping to fill a shoebox. They also learn
that these gifts are distributed to needy children
(whether they are Christian, Hindu, Muslim or of some
other faith) … and maybe they realise how fortunate
they are by comparison.
Christmas is a time for giving and receiving but much more than that it is a time of goodwill, for
thinking of others and for reaching out. This year Easingwold’s outreach gesture has been
better than ever and I am very grateful to everyone involved. We will hear where our gifts have
been sent sometime in the New Year and in the meantime I wish you all a Peaceful and Happy
Christmas.
Gaynor Cole
Easingwold Parish Church was the venue last month for a special service of Meditation for All
Souls, including the Requiem by Gabriel Fauré. We were joined by the Easingwold Deanery
Ecumenical Choir, with soloists Alex Cranfield, Jane Sidders and Dean Whitehouse, organist
Peter Fletcher and conductor Peter Smith.
We were welcomed and the choir was introduced by Rev’d Margaret Young. The choir then
performed “Lord, let me know mine end”, by Maurice Greene, based on words from Psalm 39.
Margaret led the opening prayers which were followed by the Fauré, the various sections
being interspersed with readings from the Scriptures. After prayers and a final Blessing by
Margaret, the service concluded with the last section of the Requiem: “In Paradisum”.
The Deanery Choir joined the congregation over tea and biscuits to discuss this most solemn and moving commemoration of All Souls. Our grateful thanks to Peter Smith and the choir, to Peter Fletcher and the soloists, for such a professional performance, and to all who helped to organise this inspiring service.

The Parish Magazine Editorial Team would
like to thank all of our contributors for their
input to the magazine, our Distribution Team
for preparing and circulating the issues
and also to wish all of our readers a
very happy and peaceful Christmas.
On the second Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm, some of the men from St John the Baptist and All Saints congregations meet up in the George Hotel in Easingwold. The Men’s Group began in September this year as a trial to see whether such a meeting could provide an opportunity for the men of the church to get to know each other a bit better, to share in some fellowship over a beer or two, to provide a place where those who don’t come along to church can engage with those who do, and to discuss matters of Christian interest. We have now met on three occasions and have had between 9-12 people present at each gathering.
The meetings take place in the large lounge area set back from the bar and are open to all. Last month we met the day after Armistice Day and engaged in discussions around war and conflict, exploring what the Christian position might be in relation to this complex subject. People do hold different views, and some are held passionately, but if we can’t explore such things as we fellowship together and accept those whose views are different to ours, then how can we ever expect to grow in our understanding of our faith, and of others.
We next meet on Tuesday 10th of December at 7.30pm - in the George Hotel as usual, and all the menfolk in St John the Baptist and All Saints are welcome to join us, and indeed bring along friends from within our church or from within the wider community.
If you would like further details about the Men’s Group then please drop me an email at [email protected] or give me a call on 07709 827122.
Blessings John Hetherington
LIA’S PROJECT
Allan Green recently gave one of his excellent audio-visual
presentations in the Parish Church Rooms to help raise money for
Lia Price from Raskelf who intends to spend a gap year from
August next year by teaching English as a volunteer in China. She
is going with the charitable organisation ‘Project Trust’ to help
students with their confidence in spoken English and other extra-
curricular activities.
Lia also hopes to further her own knowledge by learning Mandarin Chinese whilst working as
a teacher and making a difference to individuals in the community. Already an accomplished
linguist, Lia speaks fluent Dutch and is learning German. On her return, she hopes to go to
university to read Japanese.
To be part of this once in a lifetime experience, Lia needs to raise £6200. She has already
collected £2300 and has several more fund-raising ideas lined up, Bingo Nights, a Ceilidh, and
a Chinese Banquet, but any help we can all give her will be very much appreciated. Her e-mail
address is [email protected].
Allan’s event, which included a raffle and a collection, added over £340 to Lia’s fund.

PRAYER CORNER
Prayer is at the heart of what the church is about and the prayer corner in St John’s continues to be
used regularly. Please write the names of people you would like to be remembered in the book
there. We also have a prayer chain, where a number of people pray for those in special need. If you
would like prayers for yourself or another, in church or on our confidential Prayer Circle, please
contact Deacon Lottie Cranfield on 824399.
Please include in your prayers this month:
1. All Christmas planning and activities; that all may think of others less fortunate than themselves.
2. Those who will be alone this Christmas - the poor, the homeless, refugees, and all those who feel forgotten and unloved.
3. Easingwold and District Churches Together – shared worship and activities.
4. Those charities and individuals who not only provide, but try to support those especially in need at this time.
