WELCOME TO SOUTH & CITY COLLEGE BIRMINGHAM AND BOURNVILLE COLLEGE...

Thanks for considering South & City College Birmingham and Bournville College. We welcome thousands of students each year and offer a wide range of courses to enable students to reach their goal.

The next step you take will shape the rest of your life. There are lots of things to consider – reputation, facilities, quality of teaching and most importantly, where will be the right place for you.

In August 2017, the education map of Birmingham changed forever as South & City College Birmingham and Bournville College merged to form one of the biggest and best colleges in the country.

Everything we do is about providing the best for our students. What we are doing here is taking two very good and successful colleges and creating an excellent one. For you the student, it offers a wider choice of courses, improved facilities and equipment and an even better service to the local community and businesses.

We have excellent success rates, that are above many other colleges, and the vast majority of our student successfully achieve their qualifications.

What makes us really stand out is that we work non-stop to give all of our students additional opportunities to get ahead; from work experience to traineeships and apprenticeships, where you can get hands-on experience in a real work environment. These opportunities provide springboards for our students to get jobs and are excellent additions for CVs and university applications.

I hope you’ll find this course guide and website useful when making your decision. Don’t forget to visit us at one of our open days! I look forward to seeing you soon.

If you’ve not been able to achieve English

and Maths GCSE grade 4 or above just yet, don’t worry – you

will study towards these alongside your

main subject.

Last year, IT students went to Spain, Catering and Hospitality students spent a week at Cheltenham racecourse whilst Travel and Tourism students cruised the Med. More locally, students visited companies, trade shows, museums and much more.

AMAZING RESOURCES We invest heavily in facilities and resources for students – you need to come and see these for yourself. Most students sign up on the dotted line there and then!

Think classrooms are boring? Think again – with our classrooms, each course has a specific learning space. For example, if you are a media student, you will study in a media suite equipped with a green screen, Macs and editing software. As a construction student you will get hands-on at our dedicated construction centre, in hair and beauty you will study in purpose built salons and much more!

QUALITY STAMPSWe’re proud of our Ofsted Grade 2 (which means ‘Good’) and Silver medal in Teaching Excellence Framework. It’s like getting a sticker at the dentist!

INDUSTRY VISITS AND TRIPSIt’s not all about classroom study. You will have plenty of opportunity to explore your chosen industry, including:

l visiting guest speakers l training related to health,

wellbeing and personal development

l work experience and job shadowingl participation in events and

competitions – e.g. Skills Show, SkillBuild, World Skills and more

‘A high proportion of students are successful in gaining the qualifications they study at college, and this figure has increased steadily in recent years. As well as completing their main vocational courses and gaining technical skills, students develop a range of employability skills and many gain additional relevant qualifications.’Ofsted (2015)

Employers and universities measure your qualifications in terms of levels. This qualification guide will help you understand what level you are at now and how you get to where you want to be.

ENTRY

LEVEL

WHAT’S THIS?

Courses for beginners and those who need to gain confidence with basic maths and English before continuing their studies.

Sometimes called foundation learning, level 1 study is for those of you who want to learn a new subject or skill and prepare for higher levels of study.

These courses expand on the knowledge you may already have from a level 1 or equivalent course or through other experience, and prepare you for work or further study.

Level 3 courses are more advanced, and focus on developing a more detailed knowledge and broader experience in your chosen subject.

These courses are classed as university level qualifications and are equivalent to the programmes universities offer. They will provide you with an increased depth of knowledge in your subject area.

I had amazing time at South & City College Birmingham. The fashion staff are mazing and helped me as a person to develop as design and help to decide my future. As a student with autism the college has helped me to cope with my learning disability.
