My graphic

The Original Brief

For this competition is was required to meet the following criteria:

Create an A4 sized graphic Promote my local areaSource a range of imagesManipulate imagesCreate a creative and high quality productPresent entry in a format suitable for A4

printing

Planning for my graphic

In order to create a graphic that best met the brief I did lots of preparation for my competition entry.

First, I created a specification which helped me think about about the competition requirements. Next, I researched a variety of existing graphics, this helped inspire me and allowed me to see what I would need to include on my magazine cover. After that I created a mood board of images for my graphic which assisted the development of my ideas.

My mood board

Planning for my graphic

Once that I was completed I started to create a PowerPoint presentation with my four initial ideas for my design. I then showed these plans to people and asked them to complete a questionnaire which allowed them to fill-in their opinions. Afterwards, I decided which design idea I would make (design 1) and created a detailed design plan for my final graphic. Finally, I created my graphic on Adobe Photoshop and documented the tools/techniques I used by print screening them and pasting them into a document called Evidence of Graphics.

As I used quite a few images during this process, I created a Bibliography of all of the images used and their sources.

The choices I have made

In order to make my magazine cover creative and eye-catching I wanted to have an interesting theme to base my magazine cover on (that related to London). I chose to focus my graphic around art because I really like art and regularly go to see art in my local area. Of the four design ideas I had created, when I gave out questionnaires design 1 was the most popular, so I decided to use that idea for my final graphic.

Was the brief met?

I strongly believe that I met the brief as I would say that my graphic is creative and high quality. The graphic is A4 and has been presented in a format suitable for A4 printing. I have used an array of images and have manipulated them using graphics software to create a graphic which promotes London (my local area).

The magazine cover has a high resolution of 72pixels/inch which is good for use for printing. I created the graphic to be A4 sized (the same size it would be printed in) to ensure that it would have the right dimensions and a good picture quality. I saved the graphic in as a PNG file (.png) because I thought it was most suitable as it’ high quality and can be downloaded quickly (with a small file size) so could easily be uploaded onto the internet too.

Evaluating my final graphic

Overall, I really like my graphic because it’s bright, striking and quite contemporary looking. I like the fonts and colours I have used and think that the composition is good.

To improve my graphic I would use more graphics (and therefore use more tools/techniques) and insert more text (to make it look more like a magazine). If I were to do this again I would have used older, more well known places and artwork to appeal to a wider audience.
