Antonio Fuertes was born in Madrid on the 4th May 1940 and from a very early age felt a great inclination towards the world of painting. As a very young man he started as a painter in a studio that created advertising for the facades of cinemas and theatres in Madrid. Although Fuertes was self-taught, he was employed successfully in this industry for over thirty years and was instrumental in its formation and achieved an absolute mastery in the technique.

In 1982 Fuertes held his first exhibition at the selection gallery of Toledo. Several months later, and also in El Escorial in 1983, he made a major thematic exhibition at the Jewish Sephardic Museum Toledo.

Following the success of these exhibitions, and due to the high inclination felt by Fuertes for exotic and oriental themes, the architect of the royal house of Saudi Arabia commissioned him to make some paintings with oriental themes to be taken to Saudi Arabia. Following this Fuertes become the painter for the royal house of Saudi Arabia, creating the portraits of all the kings, including King Fahd, King Faisal and King Abdulaziz .

By 1983, Fuertes' paintings had acquired such renown that his work was permanently on exhibition in London. During a visit to the London art gallery by the Princess of Oman, she was greatly moved by Fuertes poetic paintings. She subsequently commissioned Fuertes from 1985 to be the painter for the royal family of the Sultanate of Oman.
