professional practice

I gained my first experience of residential design with Metwork through: involvement (stages B, C & D) in the façade design and apartment layout of housing block for a Dublin suburb and in the design of a mews house in Holborn, Central London.

At a larger scale my roles included preparing urban design studies for parts of the Liberties LAP and as assistant to on Higher Education feasibility & competition projects.

Building Design Partnership 2004 - ‘05Cardiff City Library

www.haverstock.com www.bdp.co.uk/sectors/retail/

The construction of a new city centre shopping mall in Cardiff required the relication of the City library. BDP were commissioned to design the replacement in consultation with the city council.

I was involved in producing the outline design drawings, models and renders used in design consulation with the City Libarary Department and in producing the stage C report which formed the Employer’s Requirements for the D&B Contractor. The library opened in spring 2009.

Haverstock designed 2 buildings for Parliament Hill School, a suite of technology workshops and a performing arts block incorporating a new entrance.

My involvement in this project ran from stages C to K. As assistant to the project architect I was closely involved in the production of the tender drawings and writing the specification.

Other projects I worked on included a Secondary School PFI submission and a feasibility study on 4 Schools for East Sussex.

The use of ‘the market’ in place of external regulation to control Britain’s housing supply has had various negative effects on output not limited to build quality, dwelling size and provision for families. The financial crisis precipitated, in Sheffield’s city centre, a number of embryonic examples of these effects left incomplete by the crisis. This project explored what opportunities these hulks presented to an Architect for to creating projects and creating a different paradigm for city centre living. Its’ site was the structural frame of a bankrupt residential development and brief was to design a fit out which would support a mixed sustainable community.Referring to existing models of collective living social activities were given a range of flexible communal spaces: positioned within the tower according to a parametric analysis of the existing structure. Most of the construction was conceived to be of pre-fabricated modules to enable the community to expand as resource and occupants allowed.

A megalithic structure recreating a portion of Vienna’s extinct Gürtel wall and bristling with capsular greenhouses to produce fresh produce and provide allotment space for local residents.

The project sought to draw attention to the space and resources required to cultivate food it comprised verticall and horizontally arranged areas for cultivating food a network of boardwalks and pavilions for processing and vending the produce.

Noddy Box 2.0Research PaperThis paper looked at the Architect’s position within Britain’s housing industry and how that position could be changed to one of greater influence. It looked at how to move from the current conservative supply chain model to a market where innovation in spatial design, technological application and build quality provide homebuyers with real choices.

Greater influence was sough by harnessing the mass-mediation of spatial design to engage the public in open debate on housing. By then using this mediation as a source of data on demand the viability of new commercial housing products can be tested.

What was ultimately proposed was an information driven strategy in which a different type of architectural practice solicits designs to both homebuyers and housebuilders.
