I joined AU Studio in 2009 when the practice opened and have been an important member of the team as we grew in size. I helped develop the office filing system and managed the website and graphics alongside my project responsibilities.

Whilst working at AU Studio I have taken a number of high end residential projects from concept design to completion. Currently I am Project Architect on site for a listed building in a conservation area which entails extensive structural works and luxury fit out detailing.

At AU I have also worked in Libya where we masterplanned and branded the new media quarter in Tripoli. This features 200,000 sqm of building area including a theatre, opera house and conference centre. We drew up the framework and wrote briefs for each building including the TV broadcasting centre which we took on to tender. Other Libyan projects I have been part of include a number of tourist resorts and office developments.

I am well skilled in DTP and graphic design which I have used on a number of competition entries and for a 8 Ha mixed use development in Wiltshire. For this I designed and managed the successful pre-planning presentation including the production of all the visual material.

I passed my MArch in Architecture with commendation from The University of Sheffield. My thesis project ‘The British Centre, Rome’ won the RIBA Yorkshire White Rose Award.

As a Part 1 I worked for van Heyningen and Haward Architects on education projects. I helped with detail development and produced NBS specifications for tender. I also visited site to inspect works and helped respond to RFIs.

In Manchester I worked for Provan and Makin Architects on a number of prospective residential developments in the city centre as well as a listed community centre.

EATON PLACELondonAU Studio

This project is sited in the Belgravia conservation area in a Grade 2 listed building. It combines 2 adjacent maisonette flats which run between ground floor and basement through new openings in the Party Wall. In addition we designed a new feature stair and 2 extensions to the rear around a new external terrace.

The design incorporated extensive structural works to support the existing building above, whilst allowing for large clear areas of internal space in the new property. I have worked on the project from the outset and acted as Project Architect during the construction phase.

HEREFORD HOUSELondonAU Studio

This project was an internal redesign and refit of a private residence near Marble Arch in West London.

We re-configured the internal spaces to create 2 new lounges, a kitchen, hallway and children’s room. The scheme aims to maximise space and provides concealed storage in a number of spaces including seats, wall paneling and stools.

I worked to develop a design for the space and drew up the bespoke fixed joinery for tender along with the specification of fabrics and finishes. I also assisted with running the project on site until completion.

KINGSTON FARM Bradford on Avon, WiltshireAU Studio

Kingston Farm is located on edge of the historic town of Bradford on Avon. We worked with the land owner and developer team to draw up a design framework that was presented to Wiltshire council so the land would be allocated as a ‘strategic development site’.

I was tasked with drawing up the framework analysis and creating a visual identity for the project using diagrams and graphics alongside capacity studies and character area visuals.

We are now working on the next phase which is the architectural code and principles for the zones identified in the framework. We have also developed designs for a bicycle museum and heritage centre on the site.

From top:

Entrance Elevation

Final Report document.indd 51 17/06/2010 19:21:56

Throughout the design period we have restlessly and creatively explored the potential offered by the LJBC’s requirements. In such a large facility the spatial planning and arrangement is critical and much time was invested in ensuring the spaces provided met the client’s needs. We have also looked at the proposals in 3 dimensions, ensuring the massing of the extension worked well alongside the existing building. The 3 dimensionality of our proposals were explored in physical and computer models of various scales from 1:1000 to 1:100. Large sectional models were made to understand how spaces related to each other in section and how particular elements work in detail.

This exploratory approach continues into how the building is detailed although here we also integrate our experience, precedents and relevant regulations.

LJBC BROADCASTING CENTRELibyaAU Studio

While at AU Studio I worked on the 17Ha masterplan for the new Media City in Tripoli. Part of this was the extension of the TV centre with a 40,000m2 broadcasting facility which is intended to act as a catalyst in revitalising the area.

We worked with specialist consultants, drew up a brief for the client and then developed the building design into a tender documentation package. The centre contains 8 TV studios and 4 radio stations over 7 floors. The building is organised around 2 full height atria which provide central circulation space, clearly define each tv channel and bring natural daylight to the offices.

PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE Latymer Upper School, LondonvHH Architects

Designed specifically for music recitals, this project replaced the old school building which sat at the centre of the campus. Although freestanding, the building is linked to the Arts Centre across two glazed bridges. The main recital space seats 100 while separate studios provide areas for dance, drama and music rehearsal. A fully glazed foyer opens to the newly landscaped heart of the school. The rigourous material treatment and contextually specified brick and mortar products earned the building the BDA Building of the Year 2008.

My work on the project began with design development and built up to a tender package. I then assisted during the enabling works and construction phase. The high budget and specification for the project allowed us to collaborate with a number of consultants to ensure the materials and details were well developed.

Clockwise from top left:

Steel bridges with a glass enclosure connect the new building with existing facilities / The fully glazed main entrance faces north / The south elevation is clad is standing seam zinc sheets / The recital room uses piers in the brick walls, ridges in the concrete soffit and bespoke joinery in the rear wall to aid acoustics / The side elevations are punctuated by zinc boxes / The entrance lobby features balconies to each floor which step back at lower levels.

Clockwise from top left:

I helped design the colour scheme for the school which included the blockwork fins to the external play spaces / The cast in underfloor heating allowed for good control of the internal environment / The break out areas are double height / I developed the classroom designs with the teachers and children and designed the acoustic panels and colour scheme for each space.

CAERPHILLY PRIMARY SCHOOLYsgol Ifor Bach, South WalesvHH Architects

A new build Welsh language primary school, nursery and community facility for Caerphilly County Borough Council. The school building is single storey and is orientated southwards down the valley to take utmost environmental benefit from the sun and the prevailing winds. The design maximises the use of sustainable technologies; using grey water, recycled building materials and sustainable biomoass pellets for heating. The completed project achieved BREEAM ‘very good’ rating at post completion inspection.

The design and build contract was a tight sum of £2.6m so we used simple raw construction finishes to provide a robust building. I worked on the project from post tender to mid-construction.

THE BRITISH CENTRE, ROMEThesis ProjectSheffield University

Situated between the Trevi Fountain and the Italian Parliament the building amalgamates the 3 British entities of the Embassy, the British Council, and the British School at Rome. This assembly intends to create a site of condensed national activity and a potent tool for the manipulation of its image.

A new public piazza is created as the core to the building anatomy. A number of elements play on the use of retail as the driver for this public space to promote British trade. These include a modular planted grass wall which can become a billboard by using a robotic mower, a set of spaces which rise and fall like lifts between levels of the building and a public route which ramps around the piazza up to an auditorium space.

Clockwise from top left:

The living wall provides a soft facade that is foreign against the stone and render of the eternal city / The green wall is hung from the structure and is modular so it can be replaced or redesigned as required / My new Nolli map takes retail space as the new public domain / The robotic mower can water, cut and roll the facade grass to create typography for advertising.

OUTDOOR CLASSROOMMArch Live ProjectSheffield University

The site for this classroom was within the Sawmill of Ecclesall woods, an ancient woodland within the city boundary. The brief was to provide a shelter for visitors from local schools during all months of the year. We worked with the council foresters to find some pole stage sycamores in the wood which we learnt how to fell, strip and trim to length to become vertical members. Larger construction material was sourced from older trees which were cut to standard sections.

We designed, constructed and promoted the entire project in 6 weeks. We drew on the skills of the other craft businesses on site to teach us green timber construction techniques. To finish it off we ordered a bespoke canvas roof which provides a flexible rain cover and avoids any requirement for planning permission as it was deemed a temporary structure. The final cost of the project came in under £1,000.

Clockwise from top left:

The pole uprights were set into concrete footings to prevent rotting / We worked through very poor weather and had to ensure we were both efficient and safe / The project exhibited a range of timber construction techniques including willow hurdles in the soffit / We jigsaw cut some waney timbers to create the floor / Coat hooks were fashioned by carving pegs that were fixed into knots.
