Page2. Find five words that represent Paolo’s emotions in the text and underline them. Paolo was a high school student. One Friday evening, he went to his girlfriend’s house and he was very surprised when he saw her holding hands with his best friend Pepe. Paolo did not know what to do. He felt confused. Heartbroken, Paolo started to wander about. Soon it was very late and he found himself on one of the darkest and creepiest streets of his neighborhood. Suddenly, he noticed that there was a girl standing on a corner, in front of a big white house. She was wearing a long, black evening gown. She was cold and shivering but she didn’t seem to care! Paolo offered her his jacket and when she turned around and looked at him, she whispered “Thank you”. This made him nervous but excited. He asked her if she would like to go to a nearby café for a cup of coffee. She answered quietly “Sure, but you must promise to bring me back home”. They started walking towards the mall and she held Paolo by the arm. Paolo had a huge grin on his face and he looked very happy. Once they got to the coffee shop they spoke for a while. Then they danced a couple of songs. Everyone there noticed that the girl did not speak to or looked at anyone else but Paolo. When they got back to her house, he asked her if he could see her again. All she said was “My name is Gertrude. Thank you for a lovely evening.” She went back into her house and there was a very deep silence. Paolo was very excited and went back home but he couldn’t sleep. Suddenly he remembered “My Jacket!” He had the perfect excuse to see Gertrude again. When he got up the next morning, he grabbed his bike and started riding towards Gertrude’s house, which was on top of a hill. When he got there he saw that the house was old and abandoned. There was no door to knock on so he walked in only to see that there was no one there. He saw his jacket laying on a grave in the back yard and when he walked up to pick it up he saw that Gertrude’s name was written on the tombstone. Paolo was scared; so scared that he jumped on his bike and pedaled back home as hard as he could. He had spoken, danced and touched a dead person, a ghost!

Joan of Arc was born in the village of Domremy, France, in 1412.

When she was a child, she began to have visions of angels and

heard strange voices.

She believed she had a mission from God to save France.

In 1429, some people helped her to make the journey to the town of Chinon, where

the French king, Charles the Seventh, was living.

In April, 1429, When she arrived at the city of Orleans, she fearlessly rode round

its walls, while the English soldiers looked on surprisingly.

soldiers, and there, with splendid ceremonies, was crowned king.

Joan of Arc took part in an attack upon the army of the Duke of Burgundy, but she was taken

prisoner by him.

Joan of Arc spent a year in prison in Rouen. She was charged with sorcery

and brought to trial.

At the age of 19, she was burned in the market place at Rouen.

On May 16th, 1920, Pope Benedict XV canonized Joan of Arc.
