Last Friday we held junior high Student Council elections. This year we made some changes to the election process and the teachers and I all feel that they made a positive impact. Instead of having the 8 th grade students choose which officer position they wanted to run for, interested 8 th grade students campaigned to be elected to the five person executive council, with the specific positions being decided upon as a group after the election. The 6 th -8 th graders then voted for the top five candidates of their choice. This change allowed the children to focus their speeches on what qualities each could offer the entire council and it also moved the focus to what ideas the students would bring to the council. Each of the candidates gave a terrific speech and all of the students that ran for positions should be commended. The students in the odd grades will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) along with the full assessment test. This is the only standardized test that we administer in the school year; therefore, these tests are very important. Data from the IOWAs is used by parents to learn about their child’s strengths, by the teachers to drive their lesson planning to focus on specific skill sets, and by the school to determine curriculum needs. Please talk to your child about the importance of giving strong effort on each test, but also let them know that these tests are just one picture of who they are as a student and that they are not to get overly stressed by them. Please ensure that your child(ren) gets a good night’s rest and eat a quality breakfast each day of testing to perform at his/her best! Friday is Grandparent’s Day and all our students are welcome to invite their grandparents to celebrate a living Rosary in the Gym starting at 10:30am. If your child cannot invite his/her grandparents, other special relatives/friend could attend instead. Following the Rosary, our guests can visit the classrooms and the students can dismiss with their grandparent or special guest. All students must be picked up by the 11:55am dismissal.

“Rejoice and leap for joy on that day! Behold, your reward will be great in heaven.” Luke 6:23

Dear Parents,

Saturday looks like a beautiful day for the Vikings Battle of the Bags tournament. Last call for bags teams! I know I will be getting some practice tosses in before the fun starts at 2:00pm Saturday and I’m already looking forward to the great food provided by 5B’s Bar-B-Que. Also, don’t forget to turn in $100 worth of tuition/cash raffle tickets by this Friday to be entered into the $250 EARLY BIRD DRAWING at Saturday’s tourney.

Last Friday we held junior high Student Council elections. This year we made some changes to the election process and the teachers and I all feel that they made a positive impact. Instead of having the 8th grade students choose which officer position they wanted to run for, interested 8th grade students campaigned to be elected to the five person executive council, with the specific positions being decided upon as a group after the election. This change allowed the children to focus their speeches on what qualities each could offer the entire council and it also moved the focus to what ideas the students would bring to the council. Each of the candidates gave a terrific speech and all of the students that ran for positions should be commended.

Congratulations to the 2018-2019 Student Council Members

Students in Grades 3 – 8 will be taking the IOWA Assessment (formerly called

the IOWA Test of Basic Skills) staring on Monday, September 17. Mark your calendar for the LUMINARY MASS on Wednesday, October 3 at 7:30pm. This beautiful tradition allows us to celebrate an outdoor Mass in our cemetery surrounded by thousands of luminary bags marked with the names of loved ones. It is something you won’t want to miss. We follow up the Mass with fellowship in the school gym and COOKIES. We need 30 volunteers to provide 3 dozen cookies. Please use the Sign Up Genius link below to sign up to bring in cookies on 10/3.

Grandparent’s Day is this Friday, September 14. Doors will open promptly at 10:00 a.m. Please do not arrive early. The living Rosary will begin in the gym at 10:30 a.m. All grandparents are invited. If your child does not have a grandparent who can attend, he/she may invite another special person, such as

an aunt, uncle, or godparent. Because of the limited capacity in the gym, we ask that parents attend only if they need to accompany a grandparent needing help or if their child has no other visitor coming. After the Living Rosary, grandparents may visit classrooms and then leave with their grandchildren at any time. (Parents of preschoolers, please watch for information from Mrs. Mattas regarding Grandparent’s Day.) If a child does not have a guest here that day, parents are allowed to check out their own children any time after 11:15. No child will be dismissed to anyone other than a parent or grandparent/special guest unless the child brings a note stating he can be picked up by someone else. All students must be picked up by 11:55 a.m. There is no after-school daycare on this day. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tuesday, September 18 is Hot Lunch Day. Hot Lunch is a program run by Home and School and other school volunteers. Once a month orders may be placed for a lunch from a local restaurant. This month students can order specific foods from McDonald’s. The food is delivered to school and distributed in the gym. Grades P – 3 will eat in the gym on that day. Ordering a hot lunch is totally optional, but unlike “Pizza Day”, orders must be placed in advance. If you would like your child to receive hot lunch, please go to SchoolSpeak and complete an order for each of your children. You may order through noon on Thursday, September 13. (You will not be able to order any later than that.) The other dates for hot lunch can be found on the school calendar. There is no hot lunch in December or May. Please call the office if you have any questions. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tradition of Excellence Reminder: Don't forget if you sell and turn in $100 worth of tickets by Tomorrow, Thursday, September 13th you will be entered in $250 raffle that will be drawn at our Bags Tournament on Saturday, September 15th! Raffle tickets are $25 each or 5 for $100. We encourage each family to sell $100 worth of raffle tickets. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Luminary Mass is scheduled for Wednesday, October 3rd at 7:30 p.m. If you have not attended the Luminary Mass in the past, please consider joining us this year. The Luminary Mass is an opportunity to celebrate the lights in our lives - both living and deceased. Luminary Mass envelopes were sent home last week with your oldest child. If you would like to purchase any luminaries, the cost is $1 per bag. Simply place the money in the envelope and neatly write the names of the persons you would like to honor on the outside of the envelope. We are also looking for parents who are willing
