Thoughts From Fr. Tom

In today’s Gospel, Jesus holds up a widow as an ex-ample of what it means to trust in God. In her willingness to give all she had she practices a total dependence on God that those with much more wealth and religious status fail to understand. Jesus said to his disciples: Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole liveli-hood. We are invited to become more like the widow in our attitude toward giving. Does our giving lead us to a greater dependence on God? Does our giving lead us to a greater appreciation for the blessings God has shared with us? Where do we place our trust? The Gospel we hear today is a perfect lead-in for our annual Stewardship Renewal, which begins this week-end. Committing ourselves to a life of stewardship is about recognizing that everything we have is a gift from God and trusting that as we share our gifts generously God will provide for us. During the next few weeks you are encouraged to reflect on how you share of your time, talent, and treasure with our parish community. Our focus this year is to challenge every parishioner to be involved in at least one ministry area of the parish. Where can you use your time and gifts to help strengthen our community and deepen your faith? We are blessed to have many parishioners who do many things, but how incredible would it be to have everyone involved in something? All registered parish households will be receiving a mailing for our Stewardship Renewal. Please take time to com-plete the Stewardship commitment card and the financial pledge card and return with you to Mass on the weekend of November 21-22. We rely on your commitment to Stewardship to continue the important work of our parish. Thank you for your generosity. The ROYALS won the WORLD SERIES! How amazing these last few weeks have been to watch the KC Royals become World Champions in baseball. They have kept us up late at night and on the edge of our seats. They have become our team and have made us proud of our city. For the most part, they have done it with class and through hard work and determination. While major league sports is big business and professional athletes make crazy amounts of money, there can also be important life lessons to learn from the journey the Royals have been on. It’s been a fun ride. Hopefully we can keep the energy going and share the best of what we’ve learned from our team in blue. Please join us next Saturday, November 14, at 9:00 a.m. for our Fall Parish Clean Up Day. This is a great way to give of your time to help the parish. Please see the bulletin for details. Many Blessings!

STEWARDSHIP

Both widows in today’s readings gave all they had to the work of the Lord, one using all her remaining food to feed Elijah and the other offering her two copper coins to the temple treasury. Faithful stewards give all that is asked and trust the Lord to be faithful to His promises. - Stewardship by the Book

CHILDREN’S FAITH FORMATION

YOUTH MINISTRY

ForgivenessForgivenessForgiveness This week the young people of our parish preparing for Reconciliation reflected on the story of the prodigal son and the forgiving father. Each time we pray the Our Father we are reminded of God’s forgiving love and our call, as children of God, to share the forgiving love with others. How do we as a parish welcome people unconditionally with a heart filled with joy? Please keep our young people in your prayers. Their pictures are posted on the bulletin board by the Children’s Faith Formation Office. They will receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time on Tuesday, November 17th.

If you have a child in the Second Grade or older who would like to prepare for the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Eucharist but you missed the parent meetings in October, please contact Jo Engert, [email protected]. Our next parent and child gathering is Thursday, November 12, 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. OR Saturday, November 14, 9:00 to 10:30 a.m.

Confirmation 2016 Confirmation small group meetings meet this week. Please pray for our candidates who are preparing for this sacrament and the team of group leaders, peer ministers and co-catechists who are helping them prepare.

Sponsor Meeting November 8 Sponsors of Confirmation 2016 candidates are invited to the sponsor meeting on Sunday, November 8 at 7:00 p.m. in the Mulligan Room. This is a change in date due to potential conflict with the World Series.

Confirmation Sponsors Needed Would you be willing to sponsor a teen candidate preparing for Confirmation? We try to match up candidates with parishioners with similar interests. Sponsors meet with candidates at least three times for discussion and faith sharing. Sponsors are willing to pray for and support our candidates during confirmation preparation and after. A sponsor needs to be available at rehearsal and Mass in April. For more information about who can be a sponsor, please contact the Youth Ministry Office, 251-1103.

NCYC Meeting November 15 Our next and final meeting will be on

Sunday, November 15th from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Mulligan Rooms. All NCYC participants and chaperones are expected to attend. Please bring a parent to this meeting. Please make sure you are up to date on your NCYC payments and have all of your Stock in Youth forms turned in no later than November 1st. Check your email for payment updates.

Invest in our YOUTH!

53 parish youth and adults will attend the National Catho-lic Youth Conference November 19-22 in Indianapolis!

Buy a “Stock” and invest in a teen’s opportunity to grow closer to Christ, meet other Catholic teens, hear national speakers on faith topics, hear bands, participate in sacra-ments. Our parish and our teens will PROFIT from your

investment! Thank you to those who have already partici-pated. Due to the high number of people attending, we are extending the donation period until we leave

for NCYC in hopes of meeting our goal. THANK YOU!

Fall Musical Performance OLP’s kindergarten, first and second grade students recently performed the musical “Bugz,” under the direction of Mrs. Amanda Palacios. Characters were dressed as a multitude of bugs, donning adorable antennas, wings, and multiple eyes and legs! 156 children performed singing, dancing, and speaking parts. The talented students were willing to stand in front of a crowd of nearly 600 guests to sing a solo or recite a speaking part; and even with the lights off for a Firefly song, the students were stars. It was surely a performance to be buzzing about for a long time!
