Title: Success Story of the farmers

1. Name of the farmer : Sri. Shivasharanappa Khanapur

Village : Sirwar Taluka : Manvi District : Raichur 2. Technical information : by KVK, Raichur 3. Season : Kharif

The farmer earlier used to grow paddy through transplanting method and used to depend totally on the left back canal water from Tungabharda river. Unfortunately the village lies almost in the tailend of the canal route. The uncertainty of the release of water. worried him a lot. To add to this severe drought prevailed in this part of Karnataka for the past two years really made the farmers to think before doing anything in Agriculture.

Under this situation, Sri. Sharanappa Khanapur of Sirwar village contacted Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Raichur and asked for the help to take paddy cultivation under this grave situation.

Expertise available with the University of Agricultural Sciences, Raichur in the field of ‘Conservation Agricultural’ came handy and the farmer was suggested to take up “Direct Seeding of Rice” without waiting for the nursery and transplantation. A machine called ‘Happy Seeder’ was provided to him, and the direct sowing was done on 6th of July 2012 in his field in an area of 5 acres. The process of seeding with machine was demonstrated to a crowd of 100 odd farmer with a team of scientist from University. The available moisture right at the time of sowing due to rain received three days back helped him. He could take up irrigation to the field little water (after 20 days) with canal water. He followed all the available package of practices for DSR method, and at the end he could harvest 32 quintal of paddy per acre. In comparison he also had paddy under transplantation in 1 acre which yielded 30 quintal per acres. The farmer could get net returns of Rs. 26,167 per acre.

The farmer was convinced with the advantages of cultivating paddy through direct seeding and He became the pioneer farmer in spreading this technology across 500 acres in this village and little later due to efforts from KVK and the University the technology has spread to around 25,000 acre in the Raichur district.

Title: A Success story of woman Entrepreneur

Raichur is known for paddy crop and aptly it is called as Rice bowl of Karnataka. The other side of Agricultural scenario of the district is that many women engaged in SHG, dry land agriculture. These SHG activities consist of 15-20 like minded women involved in small savings and internal lending Many groups are restricting their jurisdication only to these activities but few have stepped beyond this periphery and have shown their ability in establishing success. One such group is “Shri. Gouri Ganesh SHG”. This group belongs to Basapur camp of Sindhanoor Taluka. The person behind success of this group is Smt. Laxmibai Krishnappa Guraddi, she has established this SHG about eight years back and soon she inspired all the members of the group to start Dairy. Gradually they established vermicelli unit and the next year she along other members started vermi composting units. She is earning and also guiding and inspiring others to go for organic farming as well as income generating activities. The results of these efforts are evident from the activities of each member of this group. Each member is involved in one or other activities like vermicompost, vermicilli making, dairy, grocery shops & sheep rearing. The economic analysis of their activities revealed that, they earn Rs. 12,000-13,000 from vermicilli making with an annual production of 10 quintal vermicilli. This group has about 20 milking animals, each animal is giving 5-20 liters milk / day. They also harvest 20 qtl. vermicompost annually and sell them @ Rs. 500/qtl. From the grocery shop the average income /day is Rs. 1000/-. Thus with strong will power and determination this lady is a role model for others. The Karnataka state Department of Agriculture has recognized her contribution and honored her. KVK, Raichur is always behind her success by inspiring and encouraging her activities. KVK stands with her in establishing Agro Processing Centre at her place. Title: Govindappa from Appanadoddi:Rural youth towards success

These are the days where rural youth are migrating towards cities in search of jobs, away from

agriculture. Especially in North Karnataka where, the drastic drought has eaten up their hopes of livelihood. There is acute shortage of water, even for human beings. The impact of drought on animals is still horrible. There is no fodder and water to animals, so many farmers are selling their livestock , or they are taking them to Goshala- a common place for the animals of the community where they get fodder and water given by either government or voluntary agencies. In such conditions of despair an youth shows that, even in critical conditions one can stand on their own legs if there is little guidance and more will power. Govindappa of Appandoddi village of Raichur is a successful youth who made successful use of trainings and has become an youth icon for information to the villagers. Govindappa hails from a family of three brothers and one sisters , all of them are involved in agriculture. But Govindappa educated upto D.Ed, wanted to become a primary school teacher. But in a difficult situation of getting a Government job , he did not try hard to enter into job. Instead he was guided by Gram Vikas, an NGO working for the upliftment of rural area in this region to go in for a vocational training at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Raichur. The he participated in a training on opportunities for rural youth in processing and value addition of agricultural produce on 29/9/2009. As a part of training, there was an exposure visit to the trainees to Processing and Food Engineering. During this visit he met the head of the department of this section and planned to start his own business using local resources. Since, he belonged to the area where chilli and redgram are the major crops, he decided to go in for establishment of dhal mill and chilli pounding unit with the subsidy scheme under the processing and food engineering. With technical guidance of the processing department he successfully started the chilli pounding unit. He charged Rs. 20 per kg for pounding one kg of chilli as processing fees. Then he produced around 10 quintals of at his farm and used it as raw material and producing the powder and selling it to the surrounding villages viz., Kottadoddi,, Raladoddi and his own village Appanadoddi. Slowly, he realised the importance of branding in any business and started selling the produce in the brand name of

Page 111:  · Annual Review Report 2012-13 Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Raichur 2 PART I - GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE KVK 1.1. Name and address of KVK with phone, fax and e-mail Address Telephone

Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Raichur 111

GR chilli powder. Now his chilli powder is available in university’s Parishudh- a sales outlet maintained by processing department, and he is also supplying the chilli powder to the hostels and mess. Regarding the dhal mill, he processes the redgram in to @ Rs. 2/kg. The dhal mill is seasonally used. He wants to have a large scale processing unit, and wants to give employment to his own people. Thus, on an average his gross returns per kg of produce are Pounding charges of chilli @ -Rs. 20/kg Ready chilli powder @ Rs. 120/kg Processing charges of dhal @ Rs. 2/ kg He has purchased a small sealing machine and developed the skills of packaging in double pack as single pack is likely to tear during the transportation. His mother helps him in his chores, and rest he is looking after packing, sealing and sales, hence there is no recurring cost on labours. Thus he has set a model to other youth in the village. Once the talent is unveiled, many opportunities come on their own. The same thing happened here also. Govindappa was recognised by the University of Agricultural Sceinces, Raichur as the facilitator for the Sweet orange grower’s association. As a facilitator of this association, he is transferring the technology of sweet orange production for scientists to 40 farmers (100 acres of sweet orange) regarding the technologies. The association is linked to direct marketing sans middlemen, so that, the commission is diverted as additional income to the members of association. Thus they have got lakhs of additional income through direct marketing. So also, the Department of horticulture, under the Comprehensive Horticulture Development Programme has identified him as facilitator for Nisarga mango growers association from his own village. Now he has got the additional responsibility of input distribution, getting the soil and water tested, and transfer the technologies of mango cultivation to mango farmers. Thus, slowly he is climbing the ladder of success. He is planning to expand the processing unit, in a big shed and establish various processing equipments. Let us wish him a grand success in his ventures and let him become a trend setter to his friends and others who see nothing when an opportunity is given. He is also a model to the migrating youth, who leave out the villages and search jobs in cities finally ending up in vain. A little guidance and a small opportunity may be of great help to the people like Govindappa, which would bring smiles on their lives. 10.D. Title: A case study on Direct Seeding of Rice – A simple solution to water crisis - An innovative Farming Technology disseminated by KVK, Raichur

A. Explanation of Innovative Farming Technology disseminated:

The Innovative Farming Technology disseminated was Direct Seeded Rice or Drill Sown Rice. Background of the district: Raichur is situated in North Eastern Dry Zone to the Northern part

of Karnataka with an average rainfall of 690 mm. Raichur district blessed with two command areas namely Tungabhadra and Krishna. Under these command areas, the major crop cultivated is paddy. The farmer usually practice paddy – paddy cropping system, which has led to the heavy exploitation of canal water, deterioration of soil health leading to salinity, indiscriminate use of pesticides and fertilizers put together taking paddy cultivation of this area towards disaster. The Raichur district is known for its highest consumption of fertilizers, pesticides in Asia. Similar pattern is also being followed throughout the Tungabhadra command area under the jurisdiction of University of Agricultural Sciences, Raichur.

To add to this, the trend of rainfall in this part of the state during recent years is quite erratic. In the year 2011-12, the total rainfall received was 467.8 mm and during 2012-13, it was 470 mm till date against the annual average of 690 mm. During both years the kharif rains were insufficient for the farmers to take up any activity and also due to insufficient rainfall in the catchment area the flow of water in the canal was also untimely and insufficient. Under these circumstances farmers and scientist were in search of a viable-technology to keep up the cultivation of paddy in this area (Raichur district is known as “Rice bowl” of the country). The technology came in to our rescue was Direct Seeding of Rice.

This technology was disseminated by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra in collaboration with CIMMIT project on conservation agriculture operated at University Agricultural Sciences, Raichur. Special feature of technology

1. The crop residues are mulched in the soil itself, hence no chance of burning the crop residues which adds to the soil fertility and water holding capacity.

2. The residual moisture in the soil is effectively utilized for sowing utilizing the water from monsoon.

3. No cost on nursery maintenance. 4. Reduced seed rate in comparison with the conventional system. 5. The water requirement is reduced to the extent of 30 % (0.9 million litters of water /acre) against

conventional method. 6. Reduction in the puddling cost to an extent of Rs. 2000 per acre. Indirectly it is contributing to

healthy eco system. Continuous puddling also leads to destruction of soil structure. 7. No transplanting and hence, no dependency on agricultural labourers, their by indirectly reducing

the drudgery on women in transplanting, as it is known that women bend at least 1000-1500 times / day in transplanting which is the most drudgerous activity.

8. Reduced cost of inputs compared to the conventional method. 9. Reduced pest and disease activity.

Projected figures for the district as a whole 1. Total area under paddy in Raichur district : 3,65000 acres 2. Additional net income by following DSR over the transplanting would be 356.32 crores

Benefits of DSR Method 1. Saving in time and cost on cultivation of nursery. 2. Saving in seeds : by adopting DSR method of paddy cultivation 13 kgs / acre seeds can be saved.

(4.75 lakh kgs of seeds can be saved for the entire district ) 3. Savings on labour. 4. Avoids repeated puddling, preventing the soil degradation and plough-pan formation one way so

as to keep land in good health for future generation.

5. Saves fuel : Nearly 50 % of diesel used for pudding can be saved. By opting DSR method of paddy cultivation 7.3 lakh litres of diesel (worth of Rs. 3.77 crores) can be saved in Raichur district alone besides reducing environmental pollution.

6. Saves cost of production : One way to increase the profit is saving in cost of production. By opting this method nearly Rs. 7562/acre can be saved (Rs. 76 crores for the district as a whole)

7. Solves the problem of labour dependency during peak period and reduces drudgery of labour. 8. Facilitates timely establishment of rice and succeeding crops as crop matures 10-15 days earlier

in DSR method.
