Dear Friends and Neighbors: The 2010-11 Fiscal Year marked the second occa-sion that the Health Trust, working with the United Way and Applied Survey Research (ASR), initiated an oversample of telephone surveys for Pajaro Val-ley residents through the Community Assessment Project (CAP). A project of the United Way and other partners since 1994, the CAP survey collects data about how Santa Cruz County residents view health, the economy, education, public safety, and the social and natural environments. In 2007 and again in 2011, the Health Trust commissioned an oversample survey so that dif-ferences between Pajaro Valley respondents and those in the rest of Santa Cruz County could be analyzed more thoroughly. In this way, the Health Trust hoped to identify health disparities and other trends that would inform the community’s under-standing of health care needs in the south part of the county. While there were bright spots in the Pajaro Val-ley data, comparison of the 2007 and 2011 results revealed several continued health challenges for Pajaro Valley respondents:
• Higher rates of fast food consumption• Higher rates of obesity and diabetes• Higher levels of depression• Lower levels of physical activity
On the plus side, the Social Environment has improved — nearly 90 percent of Pajaro Valley
Message from the Chair and CEOresidents expressed high ratings for quality of life indicators like enjoying life or feeling that people in neighborhoods help each other out, which is encour-aging. Pajaro Valley residents also reported improved access to health care and health insurance coverage
in 2011 compared to 2007 — most likely due to efforts by the Health Trust and its many partners to educate the community on how to use the health care system. To better understand the full story of disparities in the Pajaro Valley, please visit the Health Trust’s website at www.pvhealthtrust.org and click on A Glimpse of Reality: Health & Other Disparities in the Pajaro Valley, 2011. As you thumb through this annual report, please take time to review the grants and pro-grams the Health Trust supported during 2010-11. We are proud of the dedicated agencies who help carry out our mission to improve the quality of life and health for all residents of the Pajaro Valley. We are also deeply grateful to the many donors listed in this report for their generous gifts and grants. It is only through partnerships like these that we can hope to overcome the greatest healthcare challenges facing our community.

Deeann Hartzell (at center in pho-to), Manager of Marinovich Cold Storage in Wat-sonville, knows that there are many families in the Pajaro Valley whose lives have been touched by diabetes. It’s one of the reasons she and her company make an annual gift to the Health Trust to help support programs that address diabetes and its contributing factors. One of these programs is the Diabetes Health Center (DHC). The DHC’s professional certified diabetes educators offer diabetes prevention, nutrition and self-management education to all in our community who need these services. Deeann says her grandfather and founder of the company, Jack “Ivo” Marinovich, had diabetes. “In recent years, it’s become even more prevalent in our community—even some of our employees have been affected,” she says. “I’ve learned that the DHC can make a real difference in managing what can be a very disruptive disease.” Begun as a family business in 1946, Ma-rinovich Cold Storage provides refrigerated warehouse space for many local farmers to cool and store their apples, berries and other produce grown in the Pajaro Valley. Deeann is proud that the agricultural industry in the Pajaro Valley produces some of the healthiest foods in the world. “We feel

Where an Apple a Day Is Good for Your Healthfortunate to be in an industry that is a keen promoter of products that are good for all of us — healthy fruits and vegetables.” She points out that new data comes out con-
tinuously on the health benefits of consuming every kind of berry grown in the Pajaro Valley. Deeann is quick to add that she and her family have not forgotten about “an apple a day.” In fact she notes that one of the last survivors of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake just expired and said she owed her longevity to eating an apple a day! “I have always felt that it is critical that individuals learn early the importance of developing life-long habits of proper eating and remaining active in order to take some personal responsibility for managing their health.” “The Pajaro Valley Health Trust and its Diabetes Health Center certainly promote these goals.”
