From the Chairman’s desk

Dear Friends,

It is my great honor to share Vikash’s Annual Report for the year 2016-17. This report comes to you with pride, as it is a collection of our most significant accomplishments and lessons learnt from the past year.

In the financial year 2016-2017, Vikash steps closer to realizing its vision to see “A society where basic needs of every individual like Food, Shelter, Health, Education, Entertainment etc., is met; where Justice, Equality, Liberty and Security are assured; where Cooperative Culture is a Way of Life” through various activities like operation and management of shelter homes for urban homeless, community mobilization for promoting health seeking behaviours of slum dwellers, inclusive development of persons with disabilities, integrated development of tribals and strengthening urban Governance.

We are excited to share with you a new twist on the year: we wanted to share with you all the matters that have had meaning for us this year, as well as the stories that lie behind each one.

About Vikash

Vikash is a leading state level development organization working as a developmental facilitator

in different parts of Odisha to build the capacity of communities to manage their process of

sustainable development. It works as a catalyst in improving access to entitlements and to

exercise human rights. Vikash has designed its line of action to work in large areas while

maintaining the beauty of small things. During its journey from its inception to till now it has

managed to evolve as a secular, non partisan and democratically humanitarian organization for

the holistic development for marginalized sections of the society like rural poor, urban slum

dwellers and indigenous community. It encourages the communities to build their institutions

and actively participate in program implementation.

A paradigm shift from rehabilitation of leprosy affected persons to inclusive development of community

has occurred and it has given a scope to prove us our credential in the developmental field with its

accountable and dedicated human resource working relentlessly for the development of people at the

bottom of pyramid.

Organogram

Inclusive development of Disabled Persons for equal opportunities Vikash is often stress on inclusive development of people in which nobody should be deprived of getting

the fruits of development. Keeping in view of this, Vikash has established a model for Community Based

Rehabilitation of disabled people in various parts of Odisha. It is promoting inclusive development of

children/persons with disabilities. During this year Vikash accomplished the following activities in

various blocks of Puri, khordha and Koraput districts of Odisha

Home Based Therapy services

Qualified professionals and Multi-rehab workers provided therapy services to Children/Persons with Disabilities for making them maximum level of functional independent in activity of daily living, feeding, toileting, bathing, grooming and mobility. During the year 2016-17, home based therapy services were provided to 430 CWDs in Puri, Khordha and Koraput districts.

Centre based therapy service

Vikash has provided centre based therapy services for the severely disabled along with nursing care, free food and orientation for the guardians. During the year 2016-17, it has provided its services to 128 Persons/Children with disabilities.

Needs identification & distribution of Aids and appliances

Vikash, in collaboration with ALIMCO (Artificial Limb Manufacturing Corporation of India) had organized a camp to identify the need of assistive devices for the person with disabilities in Puri district. The camp has identified 109 CWDs/PWDs as eligible to get aids and appliances.

Referral camps

Vikash organizes referral camps for CWDs to appropriate service delivery points for increasing their socio-economic condition. In the year 2016-17 it has referred 75 CWDs to SCB Medical College & Hospital, SV Nirtar, ALIMCO, AYJNIHH, LV Prasad eye hospital and District Headquarter hospitals for specialized services like Assessment, Assistive Devices, surgery, Medicines etc.

Medicine support

Vikash provides epilepsy medicine support for those who can’t afford it through direct support and through referrals to Government Hospitals. It has provided direct support to 32 CWDs and 18 CWDs through referrals during the year 2016-17.

Education support

Vikash promoted education among 20 needy disabled children by way of tutorial and study materials. Through its various activities, it had integrated 84 children with disabilities to normal schools in the year 2016-17.

Modification of Aids and Appliances.

To increase the ease of disabled, Vikash undertook modification of aids and appliances for the CWDs/PWDs. During the year 2016-17, it has modified 10 standing boards and 3 toilets based on the need with locally available resources.

Advocacy for rights of disabled

Vikash facilitated 15 PWD associations where periodic meetings were conducted in village & block level to discuss on leveraging Government benefits for the disabled. The following Government benefits were arranged for the people with disability in the year 2016-17.

Annual Sports

Annual sports cum cultural events were organized by Vikash during September 2016 with a participation of 103 CWDs. This event has helped a lot in uplifting the self-confidence and encouraged the disabled in taking part in physical activities.

Exposure Visit

An exposure cum educational visit was organized for 44 CWDs in the year 2016-17 to Nandankanan Zoo at Bhubaneswar. The CWDs were impressed by the nature’s symphony and by the exquisite touch of the wilderness there

Rehabilitation of Mentally ill Vikash developed a community model where people with mental illness and those who are moving on the streets were given shelter and treatment. Activities were organized to teach them life skills and vocational skills for encouraging them to become as independent as possible.

During the year 2016-17, it had identified 750 PWMI at Puri district and arranged the following Government services.

Quality health services for all Vikash undertook community mobilization services in the slums of Bhubaneswar for uplifting their health seeking behavior. It also organized various awareness activities on communicable and non-communicable diseases in various parts of Odisha.

Community mobilization for health seeking behaviour

Vikash is facilitating community mobilization activities in the slums of Bhubaneswar to build the capacities of frontline workers and community based organizations like ASHA, MAS, SHGs and WKS through Information Education Communication (IEC) & Behavior Change Communication (BCC). The activities are focused to empower the community through awareness generation for raising demand for services from the Health System.

Quality education for all Vikash undertook activities towards inclusive and equitable quality education for all the children in its

project operational areas. These activities specially focused on integrating children with disabilities,

tribal children and poor children in rural areas and urban slums to mainstream education. The

organization facilitates this activity by promoting joyful learning materials in the teaching curriculum.

The organization facilitated two pre-schools in Koraput and Puri district for the tribal and disabled

children. These schools helped 132 nos. of children to get along with other children, learn numbers,

shapes, alphabets etc. The students at the schools were involved in extracurricular activities like physical

exercise, music, yoga, singing, dance etc. apart from regular teaching. Education support is provided to

poor disabled children by way of tutorial support and study material.

Sustainable Livelihood Sustainable livelihood is an emerging challenge for the marginalized communities. In an effort to

provide sustainable livelihood, Vikash promoted both farm and non-farm based livelihoods to enhance

the income levels. To sustain this activity, Vikash periodically organized skill development programs like

improved agronomical practices, coir & handicraft training, Livestock management, Micro-enterprise

promotion etc to its program beneficiaries.

Shelter for Urban Homeless Seeing the increasing trend of urban

homeless Vikash is operating three

shelter homes for the urban homeless in

Rayagada and Bhubaneswar. These

homes had provided shelter to 1573

urban homeless in the year 2016-17.

Besides providing shelter, it caters to the

needs of urban homeless with the

support of food, periodic medical

checkups, counseling, re-integration into

their families, referrals etc.

Non-Farm based livelihood

Vikash organized training on coir rope making under

sectoral livelihood approach for 40 nos. of SC women

from Below Poverty Line in Gop block of Puri District

during the year 2016-17.

Vikash aims to empower SHGs for their sustainable development keeping in view, it has promoted 26 Nos. of SHGs in Narayanpatna block of Koraput district in Odisha through income generation activities like Agarbatti making, Paper plate making, grocery, Ragi processing, backyard poultry and goatery units.

Farm Based Livelihood

Vikash promoted potato cultivation for 15 farmers under RKVY (Rastriya Krushi Vikas Yojana) scheme and mango plantation covering 11 hectares of land for 8 beneficiaries in Narayanpatna block of Koraput district in Odisha.

Skill building training programs

Vikash organized placement linked skill development training programs in the district of Malkangiri and Rayagada for the disabled youth. In the year 2016-17, the organization had trained 120 disabled youth in both the training centres.

Habitat Vikash emphasizes good habitat development for the human beings. Based on that, it has been engaged for the improvement of housing, environment and overall sanitation for the poor to realize the developmental goal.

Sanitation Vikash is actively involved in the Government of India flagship program i.e. “Swatch Bharat Mission” by creating awareness to prevent open defecation and by constructing individual toilets to use for their behavioral change. In the year 2016-17, it has constructed 525 nos. of toilets in Koraput district of Odisha It has organized awareness on sanitation and prevention of communicable diseases in 23 slums of Bhubaneswar.

GOOD GOVERNANCE

Good governance is important for strengthening the local self government for meaningful participation of the citizen in a democratic form of government. Vikash provided meaningful contribution to strengthen the urban governance with civil society initiatives in Konark of Puri District.

Sanitation plan for Chandra Bhaga Village

Vikash has developed a sanitation plan for Chandrabhaga Village to clean the coastal area of Chandrabhaga. In this process Vikash collected the primary data & organizing meeting among the villagers for using of toilet & convince the villagers for their contribution for the same like labour & the cost of maintenance.

Awareness & campaign for sanitation & involving youth in good governance

Vikash always believes in involving youth to change society towards development. As sanitation is a very important issue in recent era of time, it is very natural we can address the issues only when we can able to manage our governance system effectively. So for any kind of development good governance is the wheel of change. Youth awareness was conducted during the Konark festival on cultural heritage & its protection.

Maintenance of Information centre.

Vikash maintains a City Resource cum information Center at Konark NAC to provide information on developmental issues & activities of Konark. Local public, youth, social activists, media personnel, women activists, community leaders, tourists etc. had visited the Resource Centre and interacted on development of Konark NAC.

IEC Material preparation and dissemination

Vikash is continuing to develop information materials based on the issues & developmental activities published in various news papers. The basic objective of the IEC material is to enhance the knowledge of the readers on ongoing issues & developmental activities. These communication materials were disseminated during various trainings, workshops, meetings and individual interactions of the staff with stakeholders.
