On 3 March this year, the European Commission launched its new European strategy for growth and jobs, which sets out the main guidelines for tomorrow's European economy. As the President of the European Council, I attach priority to this strategy, since it will offer an important basis for boosting our European economies. To meet the social, economic and environmental challenges we face, Europe will have to build on future-oriented, dynamic and responsible entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship is at the heart of our economy, entrepreneurs are a major driving force of our economy, and of growth and jobs. The mindset of our entrepreneurs is a critical factor for success. Investment in education projects to stimulate entrepreneurship by young people and equipping young people with the right skills has to be at the centre of our efforts. Complementary to the policies of the Member States in which education for entrepreneurship is already a major economic policy goal, the European Union takes several stimulating initiatives in this area. Recent examples are the campaign “Your World, Your Business” (http:// ec.europa.eu/enterprise/yourworldyourbusiness) and the “Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs” programme (http:// www.erasmus-entrepreneurs.eu). The initiatives and achievements of the Junior Achievement-Young Enterprise Europe (JA-YE) and its member organizations are of crucial importance in this context. This annual report gives a comprehensive overview of their activities and is convincing proof of the strength and significant added value of these initiatives. I congratulate JA-YE on the work done and wish all its members and participants the best of luck with future endeavours.

Yours Sincerely,

HERMAn VAn ROMPUYPRESIdEnT Of THE EUROPEAn COUnCIl

2009 was truly a year of full of creativity and innovation. We celebrated with a profusion of innovation camps and our first awards for cross-border student companies in the Enterprise without Borders programme. We were thrilled to link up in so many ways with our counterparts in the Middle East, in Africa, the USA, Asia and the Americas.

despite our vast geography and diversity of needs and wants, we united around a new Strategic Plan and took a giant leap forward with our IT platform.

At the heart of it all, though, we’re the same as ever: a grassroots network with high-quality winning curricula, proven results and a compelling vision. We thank the European Commission and all our main sponsors and member companies for their generous support. With your help we have achieved some big milestones this year. Your encouragement has been our inspiration.

There are few challenges more important than motivating young people to become the best that they can be. We need their skills, their ideas and their enterprising spirit to create the future. It starts now.

by 2012 Enterprise without borders will reach• 24 European countries• 14,000 students• 1,000 mini-companies• 500 partnerships• 1,000 business volunteers• 1,000 teachers

“Learning entrepreneurial and business skills and having experience working across borders and cultures are essential capabilities for young people preparing to enter the workforce.”

Jill Huntley, Senior director,Corporate Citizenship, Accenture.

SkillSfor a global EconomyBusinesses and organizations today are already operating in a globalised marketplace. Enterprise knows few borders and it is important that young people can experience it for themselves, sensitising them to the challenges as well as the opportunities.

JA-YE Europe’s Enterprise without Borders (EwB) is a secondary school and/or college programme that teaches entrepreneurship and the practical skills necessary to do business across borders. Each EwB site forms a business entity and negotiates a partnership agreement with one or more other sites in other countries. A website is available to help the “matching“ between student companies interested in forming a joint venture or an import-export business. It’s real-life hands-on learning!

diScoVEring thE world through tradEnow in its second year, over 6,300 students representing 476 EwB companies are actively promoting themselves across borders in 21 European countries, 2 African countries and in the USA. With support from over 1,000 teachers and

volunteers, the companies are evaluating their business opportunities and forming trade partnerships.

One great example of the scope of the EwB programme is Afreetrade J.V, a team of students from schools in denmark, Italy, Sweden, Portugal, norway and finland who recently won the Accenture “Enterprise without Borders” Collaboration Award at the JA-YE Europe Trade fair in lisbon, Portugal.

Speaking at the event Stig Hultén, the link teacher for ‘Scarfy’ the danish component of the ‘Afreetrade’ company, explained how the joint venture formed. “I met up with other Enterprise without Borders teachers at an EwB teacher networking event last year and that formed the initial links for our students to start working together. Through the EwB portal, the students learned about each other’s products and how they should work together for best eff ect. It’s been a fantastic experience for them – working together and learning about diff erent cultures and markets.”

a promiSing futurEIn the next two years, the EwB programme will double its impact thanks to a Comenius networks grant from the European Commission and sponsorship from Accenture.

bESt and brightEStHP and JA-YE Europe keep student entrepreneurs busy all year long with other components of the Responsible Business Competition, including the Responsible Business Ideas Contest. It gives students aged 15 to 18 the opportunity to submit their ideas for a responsible product or service online. In the 2008/2009 academic year, over 400 teams from ten European countries participated in the contest. The German team, “solAround”, took the top place in Europe with their innovative concept to promote the uptake of renewable energy in their community. The students organised a solar fair, published the “Solarnews” magazine and developed an online portal to bring people interested in investing in solar power systems together with those interested in renting out their roofs.

EXtEnding thE rEachSince 2006, HP and JA-YE have reached more than 110,000 students in Europe, the Middle East and Africa through the Responsible Business Competition website, promotions in schools and the engagement of over 200 HP volunteers.

After three successful years, JA-YE and HP decided to extend the reach of the Responsible Business Competition and, in 2009/2010, they helped to implement the programme in north and South America. The Competition has also entered the social media space with the HP Responsible Business Challenge on facebook.

“A strong social and environmental strategy is a key success factor for all companies and is more and more expected by customers. We would like to help future entrepreneurs and support start-up companies fi nd new ways to balance the economic, social and environmental aspects of running a business most successfully.”

Gabriele Zedlmayer, Vice President, Offi ce ofGlobal Social Innovation, HP.

“We saw there was a big problem in Lithuania, and indeed the whole world, where there is lots of rubbish being thrown away. We think it’s really important to recycle as much waste as possible. We wanted to do something to improve the situation and encourage young people to recycle more in the future.”

Aidas Malakaussas, President, Greblys.

SkillS for Employability | EntrEprEnEurShip | financial litEracy 15

How do you tackle the challenge of recycling and ensure that people take action? You start by teaching children how they can do their bit to reduce and recycle waste. This idea has earned fi ve secondary school students from lithuania the 2009 HP Responsible Business Award. The Greblys team created a suite of educational tools including a book and three computer games which are designed to help young children learn the principles of recycling in an easy and enjoyable way.

The HP Responsible Business Award is given to JA-YE students who devise the most eff ective business plan that combines fi nancial performance, innovation and social and environmental responsibility. It is part of the Responsible Business Competition, an extension of the existing JA-YE Europe Company of the Year Competition, which recognizes the best performing mini-companies in secondary schools across Europe.

“This opportunity has been great for me because it helped me to get an impression about science professions. It gave me information to think about my future education which I think, for sure, will be in the fi eld of physics or chemistry.”

Amelie Solberg, student from norwayat the fi rst Sci-Tech Challenge event

SkillS for Employability | EntrEprEnEurShip | financial litEracy 17

The grand challenges—such as energy—need enterprising and highly skilled people. However not enough young people are pursuing careers in maths, science and technology (MST). Current predictions suggest there won’t be enough MST professionals to meet the future skills needs of European industry.

One of the key reasons for this is the lack of connection between industry and the classroom before young people move on to college or university. They often fail to see the relevance of what they are studying because they have little exposure to the real world or to adults in MST careers. As a result, they are not very familiar with the vast array of interesting job opportunities that exist. Working in partnership, JA-YE Europe and ExxonMobil developed the Sci-Tech Challenge. Specifi cally designed to focus on MST skills as well as motivate students through problem-solving methods, the Sci-Tech Challenge also highlights the relevance of those skills at an age when young people are making important career and education choices.

Over the next three years 10,000 students, over 200 ExxonMobil volunteers and 180 teachers from nine European countries will experience the Sci-Tech Challenge. The project is comprised of elements in the classroom, online and a series of Sci-Tech Challenge competitions. Throughout these activities, students will have access to role models in the form of expert ‘MST' volunteers from ExxonMobil who will be on hand for classroom visits and mentoring at the Challenge events.

“Through our investment in this programme, ExxonMobil is helping students understand the importance of MST skills in addressing society’s challenges today and tomorrow. It is critical that we encourage their enthusiasm for science, engineering and technology careers, to ensure that we create a talented pool of professionals for the future.”

EuropEan

What do you get if you put a group of students from diff erent countries all with very diff erent experiences and ideas all in one place, with one challenge - to brainstorm solutions to a special problem? The answer - an abundance of innovative ideas and that’s what JA-YE Innovation Camps are all about.

Innovation Camps are 24-hour intensive idea-generating workshops where students are set a specifi c challenge by business or government (or both!). They are given access to tools, information and resources and have to propose a solution. Participants need to quickly adapt to each other and fi gure out how to work together most effi ciently. Throughout the experience, students develop their interpersonal and problem-solving skills and learn to work to very tight deadlines.

Challenges for students have been designed by ArcelorMittal, British Council, dG Education and Culture, Microsoft, nokia, just to name a few!

In november 2009, 95 secondary school students from 25 countries headed to Brussels to compete in a unique Innovation Camp event as one of the fl agship projects of the European Year of Creativity and Innovation 2009. The young people had just 24 hours to suggest solutions to a problem that has been challenging governments for decades – how best to engage students and make education more relevant for the future? The ‘Tech-Box’ teaching aid, schooling

through social networks and specialised programmes for people who have dropped out of education where just some of the innovations that were suggested.

In the netherlands, norway, Sweden, denmark, Italy and Romania 800 students will experience Innovation Camps fi rst-hand thanks to a partnership with nokia. Students were challenged to fi nd new ways that mobile technology could be used to improve people’s lives.

More than 1,000 students took part in the national Skills@Work Challenge events in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia, Israel, Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, Turkey and the UK in 2009. Thanks to support from British Council and Microsoft the winners from each country met in Sofi a in March for the international fi nale.

Impacting Vocational School Students Across EuropeIn 2009, the JA-YE Europe network won a 3-year grant under European Commission leonardo da Vinci Thematic networks to organize Creativity and Innovation Camps in 13 European countries (Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, denmark, Estonia, Greece, Italy, norway, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Spain and Turkey) for vocational school students.

Each camp will engage employees from the private and public sector as volunteer advisers giving young people the opportunity to learn more about what companies and organizations do and the challenges they face.

EnhancinginnoVation & crEatiVity

“This Innovation Camp has encouraged me to dream big, to go beyond the limits pressed on us by day-to-day life and turn ideas into reality by working on a project which really puts our imagination to work. I have gained lots of new friends and have met people who have shared their entrepreneurial knowledge and guided us towards looking more at the practical side of a project – fi nance and feasibility – helping us gain a better grip on reality”.

Jzigyarti diana Timea, Student - nokiaInnovation Camp Romania

“It was the fi rst time I participated in this kind of event and I was completely blown away by the quality of the projects and the children’s engagement, by the ideas, the presentation skills, teamwork and the list could continue with many other things. For me such events are the ones that could make our educational system grow and our children could only benefi t”.

Talida Istudor, nokia business volunteer

what happEnS nEXt?Ja-yE alumni EuropE JA-YE Europe is a proud partner of JA-YE Alumni Europe - an active network of 1,500 JA-YE Alumni who voluntarily support JA-YE organisations on the ground and provide fantastic networking and development opportunities for their peers. Each year the elected European Co-ordination Committee organise national coordinator meetings and work closely with host alumni organisations to facilitate the Annual Alumni Conference. In 2009, 53 participants from 12 countries headed to Copenhagen for the ‘leaders of a Sustainable future conference’ – six days of lectures and work sessions aimed at inspiring and educating participants to become sustainable leaders in the future.

“The participants at the JA-YE Alumni conference were clearly very ambitious and had a remarkable ability to understand and discuss.” Peter Schliemann, danish Ministry of Science & Technology.

cElEbrating alumni SuccESSThe JA-YE Europe Young Entrepreneur of the Year Competition is now in its third year and its aim is to locate success stories from young entrepreneurs among JA-YE Alumni and fi nd out what has happened to them since participating in a JA-YE programme.

In 2009 Benjamin Kainz & Oscar lundin, founders of “Ung Omsorg” received the award. They really impressed the judges because at the age of 21 and 20 respectively they had already built a successful social enterprise which employed over 400 people and has made a really positive impact on the lives of thousands of Swedish elderly.

When they received the award Oscar said; “We are honoured to receive this prestigious award. It means a lot to us and we are thankful to JA Sweden (Ung Foretagsamhet Sverige) for giving us the opportunity to try and test how to run a real company whilst we were still in secondary school.”

One year on we caught up with Oscar to fi nd out what he thinks of the JA-YE Europe Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

“I think it’s a great way to spread the vision and brand of your company abroad. The people who are connected to the JA-YE-movement are all individuals who believe in the power of entrepreneurship and have new contacts and ideas who could help entrepreneurs and start-ups to grow in a good way!”

Sasha bezuhanovaSasha Bezuhanova has been chair of JA Bulgaria for 8 years. She has been instrumental in helping them gather a high profi le Board of directors and position the organization as a leader in the area of entrepreneurship, fi nancial literacy and business skills for the young generation in Bulgaria.

Vesna StojanovaVesna Stojanova’s engagement goes back to 1997 when JA was launched in Macedonia. She became chair two years later. despite the challenges that come with an emerging economy, JA Macedonia grew and prospered under her watch and it is one of the leading JA organizations in that region.

rein loikRein loik was the founder of JA Estonia in 1992 and has been an active supporter ever since. As an active JA-YE volunteer he has lectured in classrooms, teacher training sessions, taken part in juries and has been a key leader behind JA Estonia’s highly successful ‘Job Shadow day’ events.

Each year JA-YE Europe presents leadership Awards to board members whose contribution to the organization has been more than outstanding, whose work has had an impact at both the national and European level and who has demonstrated a level of personal commitment and dedication that goes beyond expectation.

In 2009 the following people received leadership Awards:

Ja-yE lEadErShip award

modEl organiSationSIn 2009, nine organisations in the JA-YE Europe network achieved Model Organisation Status.* five of them for the second time!Belgium (fl)*Bulgaria*norway*PortugalRomania*RussiaSlovakia*SpainSweden

The award aims to recognize JA-YE organisations for the quality of their board, management and operations; their impact and programmes at all age levels from primary school through to university; and their contribution to the overall success of the JA-YE Europe network. The award is assessed against a system of 38 quality metrics - to be a “Model Organisation”, a member has to have completed more than 80% of the metrics.

At the JA-YE Annual Awards dinner 2009, the recipient of the fi rst ever Thomas J Bata Quality Award was announced.

The award recognized JA-YE norway (Ungt Entreprenørskap) for demonstrating the highest standard of excellence in the JA-YE network. The winner is considered a role model for others and has cultivated a reputation for quality at home and abroad among business and government leaders.

The award was judged by a jury of JA-YE Europe board members who assessed candidates against criteria which included:1. Being a ‘Member Organisation in Good Standing’ for the last 3 years.2. Being previously awarded the JA-YE Europe Model Organisation Award in 2008 and 20093. Achieving strong results against international Key Performance Indicators (based on annual

organization reports)

“We’re proud to be part of this network. We’ve learned so much from the others and their incredible achievements on the ground. We couldn’t have done it without their support and encouragement from day 1,” said Jarle Tømmerbakke, Ungt Entreprenørskap (JA-YE) norway CEO, who received the award along with one of JA-YE norway’s Board Members, Johan H. Andresen jr., President and CEO of fERd.

auditor'S rEportfor thE yEar EndEddecember 31, 2009Junior Achievement- Young Enterprise Europe

We have audited the financial statements as of and for the year ended december 31, 2009 which have been prepared under the responsibility of the board of directors and which show a balance sheet total of € 1.476.185 and a profit for the year of € 6.555.

UnqUAlIfIEd AUdIT OPInIOn On THE fInAnCIAl STATEMEnTS

We conducted our audit in accordance with the standards of the ''Institut des Reviseurs d'Entreprises/instituut der Bedrijfsrevisoren''. Those standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free of material misstatements, taking into account the legal and regulatory requirements applicable to financial statements in Belgium.

In accordance with those standards, we considered the Association's administrative and accounting organisation, as well as its internal control procedures. Association officials have responded clearly to our requests for explanations and information. An audit includes examining, on a test basis, evidence supporting the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. An audit also includes assessing accounting principles used and significant accounting estimates made by management, as well as evaluating the overall financial statement presentation. We believe that our audit provides a reasonable basis for our opinion.

The costs declared in the financial statement are real, accurately recorded and eligible in accordance with the grant agreement 2009-SPEC-2009-0811/001-001.
