Message from the President of the Board

We are thrilled to be a part of such a dynamic, proud, energetic, and generous community.

Dear American Community School at Beirut Community Members;

THANK YOU to our donors whose generosity resulted in record-breaking totals for the ACS Annual Fund. Parents, trustees, alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends of the American Community School at Beirut raised over $540,000 this year, well above our goal of $320,000.

THANK YOU to the Parent Volunteer Group of the Development and Alumni Affairs office for their tireless work. This group and members of the Board enabled us for the first time to break through the half million mark.

THANK YOU to our devoted alumni who contributed a record high for the school and the Malcolm Kerr Fund by participating in growing numbers. The spirited leadership of Patrick Hinds ‘56 and the Alumni Association Board of Governors was superb.

THANK YOU to the faculty and staff who supported the Annual Fund with an impressive level of participation. Thank you to all who participated in the Mother’s Luncheon, the Jazz Night, Fashion Knight, Volleypalooza, the ACS Carnival, and the Brick by Brick fundraising BBQ. These events held by the school, in addition to benefit events sponsored by the Parents’ Committee in support of the Annual Fund, helped raise this record amount for ACS. Our generous community at its best!

THANK YOU TO ALL who helped to make 2010-2011 a remarkable year. We are thrilled to be a part of such a dynamic, proud, energetic, and generous community. On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the faculty, staff, and students of the American Community School at Beirut, we are grateful to all.

With appreciation,

Nina Joukowsky Köprülü '79PresidentBoard of Trustees

Message from the Headmaster

Your Annual Fund gifts have a huge impact on our learning

community.

Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends of ACS,

This year, when ACS graduated its one hundredth class, we reached a very significant milestone. The generous parents, alumni and friends of the school contributed over $540,000 to our annual fund drive! We are a superior school thanks to your understanding of our mission and need for financial support. Thank you.

The significance of these generous contributions cannot be underestimated. As is the case with all independent schools, our operational budget depends on the gifts of our contributors, and this year you have re-confirmed your strong commitment to ACS. These gifts will allow ACS to attract and retain high-quality faculty, administrators and staff in a competitive world market, to expand the classroom and real-world experiences of our students, to provide technological support and educational materials for the students, to maintain and renovate our aging facilities, and to provide opportunities for students of diverse backgrounds. In addition, our capital budget, which supports the continual development of facilities and infrastructure, is stronger, thanks to specific parental and organizational gifts and grants.

We have started the academic year 2011-12 with near-capacity enrollment of 1061 students. The year has begun with major campus renovations, including an upgrade of the electrical system that will result in electricity cost reductions of at least 30 per cent, as well as upgrades that will reduce the demand on the generators. Roof repairs have been concluded, and we are pleased that last year’s repairs were very well done, with no signs of leaks. Work on an elevator for the Lower School Building will begin during the school year, and access points for the wireless system will be increased, while our pilot interactive whiteboard and tablet PC programs will be expanded. A new website will be launched this fall to facilitate communication and celebrate student learning.

Your Annual Fund gifts have a huge impact on our learning community. Your understanding and appreciation of the education that ACS provides each student is reflected in your donation. We offer sincere thanks to this generous community of parents, alumni and friends. You make a difference.

Sincerely,

George H. Damon, Jr.Headmaster

ACS Mission Statement

The American Community School at Beirut offers research-based and classroom proven educational practices through an American educational philosophy. The program instills in students the highest academic and ethical standards, preparing them for the successful pursuit of higher education and for responsible effective global citizenship.

Founded in 1905, ACS is an independent, non-profit, non-sectarian, pre-K-12 coeducational day school. It draws students from both the Lebanese and international communities in Lebanon and embraces diversity in race, gender, religion, national origin and economic background. ACS is accredited in the United States and licensed in Lebanon. It offers a rich and balanced curriculum in both the liberal arts and the sciences. Athletics, the visual and performing arts, extra-curricular activities and community service are integral components of an ACS education. In the high school, ACS provides a rigorous college preparatory course of study including the Lebanese and International Baccalaureate Programs. While the language of instruction is English, Arabic is taught at all levels.

ACS encourages students to be open-minded and respectful of the social, political and religious diversity of its community. As it enters its second century, ACS reaffirms its commitment to developing a lifelong engagement in learning as well as the leadership qualities and personal integrity needed to contribute positively in an increasingly complex global society.

I LOVE ACS!Since arriving

in ACS in the

beginning of 11th grade, I

have had one of the biggest

and yet forever reminiscent

experiences of my life. My

time in ACS led me to discover

more about myself, learn

more about the world, and

become more aware of my

surroundings.

Ghassan Awdi ‘11

For those teachers that kneaded my mind like silly putty: thank you. Thank you for teaching me how to think, fall in love with learning, for infusing me with passion and lesser sanity. Teachers, you are way more important than you know. High school has taught me three things: balance, books and love.Lara Shabb ‘11

ACS is a big part of my life

and it means a lot to me… I’d

like to thank my teachers who

were patient with me and who

inspired me and helped shape

who I am and what I know. Rami Assaf ‘11

Thank you all for making my time in Lebanon and at ACS, the greatest time in my life. No other place could have taught me so much about culture, language and above all others friendship.Esteban Alvarez ‘11
