MULLALOO SLSC 2012/13 ANNUAL REPORT 1
This is the Club’s most prestigious
award and this season is awarded to
Sandy Clarke.
Once again Sandy has been an
outstanding Club member. She has
been involved in nearly every facet
of Club activity and has been an
outstanding contributor for the season.
Sandy was the General Manager of Surf
Sports, but also took on the activities
of Competition and Coaching which
required signifi cant eff ort to coordinate
and manage these activities. The Club
has been highly successful in both of
these areas due to fantastic programs
which she has set up.
Sandy was also involved as an Offi cial
for junior and senior carnivals and was
off ered the area referee position at the
Junior State Championships.
Sandy is a rower in the Mullaloo Marlins
surf boat crew, who were a competitive
Open and Masters womens
team, coming fourth at the State
Championships and winning Gold at
the Australian Masters Championship.
Sandy is also a Bronze Medallion trainer
and was involved in 2 Bronze training
groups helping to put new lifesavers
on our beach.
In her spare time, Sandy completed her
Patrols, was involved in Youth activities
including several camps and worked
behind the bar.
Sandy was responsible for publishing
the Club’s newsletter and has for the
last 3 years produced the Annual
Report. These high quality documents
are regarded highly within the Surf Life
Saving community.
As you can see, Sandy is a worthy
recipient of the Club Person of the Year
award.
This year’s President’s award is
presented to Kim Allen.
Kim was involved in the rescue of
Martin Kane after Martin’s surf ski was
attacked by a shark. Following the
attack, Kim became concerned about
his and others safety, he felt that there
needed to be a better way to identify
any threats in the water and protect
our members and the community in
the water.
He then spent a signifi cant amount of
time over the next 6 months identifying
relevant shark research and technology
which could be used to help protect
beach users. He has lobbied State
and Local government to help fund
projects to utilise the technology
he has identifi ed. He is currently
working with Curtin University on
one of the technologies thanks to a
State government grant. Kim is also
working with the Club to identify other
technologies which could be used on
our beach.
Kim has also been a part of our Strategic
Committee, identifying potential
opportunities for the club, helping to
sustain its current operations and help
the club continue to grow in the future.
It has been a pleasure working with
Kim this year. His enthusiasm and
dedication to the Club’s needs has
been outstanding.

CLUB OFFICERSFor the 2012/13 Season
MULLALOO SLSC 2012/13 ANNUAL REPORT 5
It’s been another great year for our Club. We have had many
highlights and many challenges, and once again the eff orts
of our Club members have been exceptional.
This year, we implemented our new management structure
after the new Constitution was approved at the Special
General Meeting. We changed the operational Directors
roles to Managers, to enable them to be focussed on all of
the day-to-day issues rather than spreading their time over
many diff erent areas. I believe that they were able to do
a better job as a result and we were able to deliver better
services to our Members and the Community. Thank you
to all of the Managers who did an absolutely fantastic job
this year.
We appointed four General Managers this year who would
be involved in high level decision making and planning for
their respective areas. These roles are still developing and
with our Strategic Plan to be released shortly, I know that
they will be busy next year delivering our future plans. Thank
you to our General Managers.
This year we voted six new Board members to our new
Board structure. The new Board was tasked with planning
for the future of the Club and governing the operations of all
areas. We will shortly be releasing the Club’s strategic plan,
and this will guide the growth and future of the club. The
Board has also introduced a Governance Committee who
will be responsible for ensuring our processes and risks are
manageable for the Club and our continued success. There
is also a Strategic Committee who is looking to capitalise
on future opportunities for the club. All of this will help to
achieve the future goals of the Club for our Members and
our Community. Our Board members are voted for two year
terms with half of the Board up for re-election each year at
the Annual General Meeting. I hope that many of you will be
there to vote and support the people who you believe will
direct the future of this Club.
The year started with a critical situation on 20 June 2012
when Martin Kane and a number of mates were paddling
their skis. Martin’s ski was attacked by a large shark which
we believe was a Great White and destroying his ski. Dale
Gration paddled his ski over and picked up Martin. Flanked
by Kim Allen, Jordan Puchar and Richard Orme, they
brought him back to the safety of the beach. It was a very
brave act which resulted in Dale being awarded the Order
of Merit – Silver Medallion and Jordan, Kim and Richard
awarded the Order of Merit – Bronze Medallion. With the
threat of sharks on a number of occasions and at many
events, it challenged the nerve of many of our members.

President’s Report | Continued
As we would expect, the response has been exceptional at
all times. Our members have managed the situations with a
number of mitigation strategies that enabled us to maintain
near normal operations for the whole season.
Our Support Services area did a great job looking after our
Member registrations, provide Club gear, provide offi ce
services and fi nances and take care of our Facilities. Our
lounge and bar facilities provided a great venue for our
members to relax and to have our club functions. It takes
many volunteers to provide these services and we thank
everyone who has helped us.
In our Operations area, our Lifesaving Team performed
absolutely superbly. With over 11,000 hours of Patrols, Water
Safety and our new format Abalone Patrol, we looked after
our Community, making sure that they could enjoy the
beach safely. We are now also looking at issues around
Coastal Risk Management for a sustainable future and our
role in supporting the various Emergency Services that
support our community. Thank you to all of our patrolling
members and award holders who provided a great service
to our community.
The Development area once again provided Education
services to our members to make sure that we continue
to develop new patrolling members and keep our awards
up to date. The Youth Development group provided a
number of events for our 14–25 year olds and our Junior
Development group provided services to the largest group
of young members. Our Juniors once again had a fantastic
year winning the State Championships for the second year
in a row. To the many wonderful volunteers who make these
areas so successful, thank you for your hard work.
Finally, to the Surf Sports area. Our coaching services
continue to provide the skills for the outstanding results
we are getting across the Club. The Senior Championships
produced some outstanding results including winning the
Open Lifesaver Relay and the Open Men’s Surf Boats. At the
Australian championships we made 13 Finals including 3
in the Open’s which shows incredible improvement for our
Competitors.
Once again the City of Joondalup (CoJ) has been a major
contributor to the Club with their donation of $40,000. This
money helps us to fund the purchase of new equipment
and the running of the club. Each year the CoJ continues
to be our major partner in providing us with infrastructure
and opportunities. The Club this year worked closely with
the CoJ in the Abalone Patrols. We worked together on a
number of functions including the Urban Couture fashion
parade and the re-opening of the Tom Simpson Park.
We have great support from mayor Troy Pickard and his
Executive team and we look forward to another great year
working in partnership.
The State Government, through Surf Life Saving Western
Australia (SLSWA), continues to provide great support for
our Club with the provision of our new ATV, aff ectionately
known as the “bumblebee”. They have also committed to
the provision of a Jet Ski, to be located at Mullaloo, once we
have qualifi ed drivers within the club. Our local member for
Ocean Reef, Albert Jacob continues to be a great backer
of the club and a patrolling member. We also thank our
Federal Member for Moore, Dr Mal Washer who has been
an outstanding supporter of this club for a number of years.
Dr Washer will be retiring from Federal parliament this year
and we wish him all the best in the future and we would
welcome him any time at the Club.
SLSWA have also provided exceptional support for the Club
this year as we continue to grow. They provided us with
funding in excess of $9,000 to help with administration.
Through their sponsorship arrangements, they also
provided us with a new defi brillator which will be deployed
next season. The Club now also has many of its members
on SLSWA advisory committees and we look forward to
continuing to be involved in the ongoing development of
the surf lifesaving in Western Australia.
Overall, for my fi rst year as President, I am extremely pleased
with the outcomes the Club has achieved this year. I know
that with our new Management and Board structure we will
continue to develop this great Club into a sustainable and
growing organisation to further support our Members and
community. Our theme of “One Club” continues to bring
club activities together. We also introduced a new Club
theme of “Opportunities for Life” and we will continue to
work towards this for our Members.
I would like to thank everyone who has off ered their time for
the Club and thank you to everyone who has supported me
throughout the year.
See you on the Beach.
MULLALOO SLSC 2012/13 ANNUAL REPORT 7
Under the new Constitution implemented this year,
the Board structure was changed to fi ve non-executive
members and the President. At the AGM, the six new
Board members were elected to take on new roles for the
club. The new Constitution states Board members are elected
for a two year term, with 50% of the Board being off set by
one year to minimise the impact of signifi cant changes
each year. So this year only three of our Board members will
have a two year term. The current Board elected has a
mixture of old and new members, bringing with them, a
variety of skill sets.
The Board is chaired by the President and this year our non-
executive Board members include Steve Dargie and Mark
Hills, both former Presidents and current Life Members. They
bring a wealth of experience at a Club and Surf Life Saving
level. Ed Neilan, a Life Member has a wealth of Business
experience at an operational and Strategic Level. Rick Corkill
is a long term member, current Patrol Captain and works in the
Emergency Services fi eld. He is also current Board member
of Swimming WA. Vicki Rasmussen is a Junior parent and is
extensively involved in fundraising activities. She is also State
president of the Fundraising Institute Australia. Together, this
mix of skills and experience has been able to work together
to plan the future for this Club.
The Board had a busy season and met on more than
14 occasions since July 2012. The Board would meet formally
in Monthly Board meetings and informally for strategic
planning sessions.
With the new Management structure, which was
implemented to focus on operational activities, the Board
focussed on introducing a number of governance processes,
including the establishment of the Governance and Risk
Committee to oversee the management of Club processes
and the risk exposure for the Club and its members. The
Governance Committee recently proposed a new Risk
Management framework which the Board has approved
for use. This will be used by our Management Team to help
manage future risks for our Club.
The Board spent a signifi cant amount of time this year
developing the Strategic Plan for the Club. This plan will assist
in guiding the Club with its future direction. The Club started
this journey a number of years back to look at its future growth
and sustainability and this year the Board was responsible
for putting it into a plan. With input from Club members,
the Management team and major stakeholders, the future
outcomes for the Club have been developed into a Strategic
Plan. Our future operational plans will be based on achieving
these outcomes and the Strategic Committee will use it to
identify potential opportunities for the Club. The Strategic
Plan will be released at the Club’s Annual General Meeting.
The Board has also been involved in reviewing budgets,
and now has a capital expenditure process to make sure
that spending on equipment will be aligned to our future
plans. This process and the development of an Equipment
Replacement program will help us to better plan for our
future expenditure and initiatives.
The Board is now reviewing its Lease arrangements with
the City of Joondalup (CoJ). The new lease will provide the
Club with a long term tenancy of the Building which will
allow us to provide more services to our members and
the community in the future. The Board and the Club have
a very good working relationship with the CoJ and as key
stakeholders it is also important that we are aligned to their
future plans. There are many key opportunities for the Club
and the CoJ in the future and they are a major supporter of
our initiatives.
The Board will now start to focus on future initiatives for
the Club and you will start to see changes occurring in the
near future.

8 MULLALOO SLSC 2012/13 ANNUAL REPORT
It was a pleasure being involved in implementing
the new management structure at Mullaloo this
season. The role of General Manager of Operations
was to ensure that life saving services continued
without a hitch. This portfolio was to also support
two new portfolios, emergency services and coastal
environmental management. With no surprises,
Kathryn Murray did an absolutely superb job on
managing the life saving services and we continually
presented a very professional image on the beach.
We managed to ensnare the services of Mark
Donnelly as the manager of emergency services. A
developing portfolio which really suited Mark as he
works as a police offi cer with the water police and
therefore fully understands the roles we need to play
in becoming part of the team of the future with FESA.
I have always been one to encourage youth into
management roles within our club. We were very
fortunate to have Lisa West, a new marine and
environmental scientist to take on the role of
coastal environmental management with a little bit
of support from Shannon Carter, an experienced
consultant in the fi eld. All managers embraced their
roles and did a fantastic job.
Due to personal reasons I have withdrawn from the
position but am still keen to support the club and
these positions and the new General Manager of
Operations in any way I can.

MULLALOO SLSC 2012/13 ANNUAL REPORT 9
Bells, Billabong, Bondi, Kirra, Malibu, McCarthy, Nirvana,
Queenscliff e, Redgate, Stickland, Torquay, Uluwatu, Wiamea
and Pipeline (the patrol that saves the nation) patrols
collectively provided 511 highly skilled and profi cient
lifesavers, spent 11,149.25 hours patrolling some 4.5 km of
surf and sand over the 2012/13 season. It was because of
our active, highly trained and profi cient patrol members that
603 preventative actions were administered, 358 patients
were treated with lifesaving fi rst aid and 52 people were
rescued from the surf.
This season has seen our lifesavers go from strength to
strength. Together we:
• evened out the number of and qualifi cations of our
lifesavers in each patrol;
• identifi ed aspiring leaders and provided a transition
period between patrol captains;
• collaborated with the City of Joondalup over the abalone
fi shing season and contractual agreement;
• provided local schools with professional lifesaving
services; and
• maintained our safety standards.
Along with all our patrol captains, I would like give a special
thanks to Steve Dargie, Ian Allen and Leanne Kelleher who
are stepping down after several years in the role. Rachael
Crabb, Brenton Tenaglia and Steve Mignon (welcome
back) are three of the successors.
ABALONE PATROL
Our Club once again went above and beyond our contractual
agreement with the City of Joondalup (CoJ) to further
prevent abalone fi shing people from getting into dangerous
situations and rescue those in danger of drowning. For the
fi rst time, our Club provided ongoing consultation with the
CoJ; a risk assessment was introduced and implemented
prior to the commencement of each fi shing period; beach
and water patrols strategically positioned at each of the
populated coves; and a debriefi ng session over coff ee held
at the conclusion of each patrol. The team was enthusiastic,
highly qualifi ed, both in skill and application, and carried
out innovative communication techniques. The abalone
patrol, which was the fi rst Sunday of each month from
November to March resulted in 5 rescues, 10 fi rst aids and
71 preventative actions.
ABOVE AND BEYOND…
Trevor Bulley is an example of a dedicated, committed
lifesaver. Following a hard ski training session, Trevor was
approached by two concerned members from the public
who had sighted a kitesurfer in trouble. Trevor switched
into his lifesaving mode…he viewed the environment by
observing the wind and sea conditions, then using a rescue
board paddled out and pulled the tired and distressed kite
surfer and his equipment back to shore. Twenty members
from the public had gathered and applauded in admiration

as Trevor and the kite surfer safely exited the water; they had
just witnessed a real rescue by our lifesaver, Trevor.
MOVING FORWARD
The coming season will be steered by Andrew Manning
as he takes the Manager of Lifesaving role. Andrew will
continue to grow and develop our patrols, with particular
focus on:
• Inclusion and embracement of our new patrolling
members
• Empowering people to learn – skills relevant for life
• Recognising that youth have something to off er –
increase leadership roles and direction
Above all, swim between the red and yellow fl ags, be
Sunsmart and if in doubt ask a lifesaver.

LETTERS OF SUPPORT
“I would like to convey my sincere thanks to your team
including Kathryn, Sandy and her support team on the day of
the Joondalup Autumn Classic 2013. We were blessed with
a perfect day for our event, which was made all the better
through the fantastic assistance and support provided by the
MSLSC team.
I found the team to be timely, professional and proactive in
supporting our event.
Their eff orts on the day was superb and exceeded our
expectations, in particular, their diligence during water
support and ensuring swim buoys were placed correctly and
collected directly after.
It felt like we had worked with the team before and this is
obviously a refl ection of the culture of the club and the team
spirit within.”
Geoff Large, President, Team XTR Tri Club, 9 April 2013

“I wish to thank the Mullaloo Surf Club members who
attended to my wife who had fallen off her bicycle on the
coastal track. They were the fi rst to arrive to give medical
treatment which they did in a highly professional manner.
They assisted the ambulance crew in getting her onto the
gurnie trolley and down to the carpark. My wife suff ered a
fractured shoulder, wrist and hip in the accident, more relevant
to a motor crash, although she was not moving fast. Your club
is to be commended for covering such a wide area of patrol,
and the quickness of your attendance.”

EMERGENCY SERVICES
Mark Donnelly | Manager Emergency Services
I was asked to look at assessing the response capabilities
and formulate a strategy for Mullaloo SLSC to respond to
and assist in any Search and Rescue (SAR) incident or other
emergencies if required. In developing the strategy it is fi rst
necessary to understand what role Mullaloo SLSC would
play. On-going discussions with Emergency Services groups
would be required before that role can be determined.
Mullaloo SLSC have a large pool of very highly skilled
personnel and equipment and are trained to deal with a
large variety of situations including:
• First aid
• Water recovery techniques
• Crowd control
• Team work
• Local knowledge
• Equipment: 4x4, IRB’s, First aid room/equipment, Premises,
Communications
These capabilities make them a highly prized asset to the
emergency services to be utilised when required.
I have had a number of discussions with Police and FESA and
these have been centred around how Mullaloo SLSC can be
of assistance to the Hazard Management Authorities’ and
SLSWA in times of emergency. Several topics were discussed
including:
• Mullaloo SLSC’s role in an emergency
• What is expected of Mullaloo SLSC
• Types of emergencies that Mullaloo SLSC would assist in
• Mullaloo SLSC involvement with Local Emergency
Management Committee (LEMAC)
• Interclub agreements between Sorrento/Mullaloo/
Quinns-Mindarie.
There is still a signifi cant amount of work to go before we
have a fi nal position and we will develop that over the
coming season.

MULLALOO SLSC 2012/13 ANNUAL REPORT 13
COASTAL RISK MANAGEMENT AND ENVIRONMENT
The inclusion of a coastal risk management sector in
Mullaloo SLSC marks a major step forward for the club.
In today’s environmentally conscious society, the need
for organisations to display environmental concern and
stewardship is of growing importance. This is particularly
important for surf clubs which operate in the fragile
coast environment and are highly visible to the public.
The establishment of a coastal risk management sector
demonstrates to the public that Mullaloo SLSC recognises
the past, present and future impacts it has on the coast and
is attempting to address these issues.
After discussion with general managers, it was decided a full
coastal assessment would be required ranging from North
Mullaloo to Pinnaroo Point in the south. Habitats present in
the marine and coastal environment will be mapped using
aerial photographs. Current club activities and developments
can then be assessed for their impact on the habitats
identifi ed. Strategies to minimise such impacts may involve
appropriate zoning, changes to equipment or procedures.
In particular this assessment will be able to address the local
councils concern that sea anchors may be occurring on
fragile seagrass meadows. Whilst the development of such
a survey is a long term project, preliminary research and
planning are well underway.
Future developments at the club will now undergo coastal
risk assessment to reduce future coastal and environmental
issues. Any development operating within the coastal dune
system presents serious risks to natural beach dynamics
and morphology. Without proper planning, developments
can result in unwanted erosion and accretion of beach
sand. This is not only an environmental concern but results
in considerable ongoing management costs. An analysis
of beach dynamics will allow careful planning of building
design and location to minimise such deleterious impact.
With the establishment of the coastal risk sector just
beginning this season there is still plenty to be done. Surveys
and assessments represent a long term project which is
likely to be completed over a few seasons. However, the
development of the sector displays a positive direction for
the clubs future and public image.

14 MULLALOO SLSC 2012/13 ANNUAL REPORT
This season has been an interesting and in some
cases a challenging one, with the management and
operational changes, but by seasons end, it has been
very successful in all areas.
Education has had a challenging year but has
been very well managed by Lucy Cleary and the
Education Committee, Assessors and Trainers. They
have had many issues to deal with including the
changing of water safety standards and changes to
course qualifi cations.
Bret Madden and his Junior Committee, Age Group
Managers, Assistants and Coaches have again
done an amazing job as the amount of Education
Certifi cates issued and the Junior State Titles results
testify. Bret has fi nished his stint as Manager of
Juniors and I would like to thank him and Lucy
Cleary for continuing in these management roles in
this transition season.
The Youth portfolio started the season off without
a Manager until the tireless and ever reliable Gayle
Gould stepped up into the position. She formed a
Youth Committee with some of the existing and new
members. They have had a great year with some well
supported events and have done some good work in
getting the various groups in the youth age groups
to mix and support each other whatever may lay
ahead, thanks Gayle.

JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT
Bret Madden | Manager Junior Development
What a season this was! We managed to jam pack a fantastic
array of exciting activities to occupy the minds and bodies of
our 567 registered juniors.
Season 2012/13 started with a camp for our Under 14’s in
Jurien Bay, supported by a large contingent of our youth and
seniors that made camp in nearby Cervantes. This provided
a fantastic opportunity to integrate some leadership
opportunities, fun, skills development and SRC training into
a fast paced weekend that challenged not only the kids but
the support team of Jenni Wood, Fiona Gatey, Rob Allen,
Simon Farmer and Sarah Gregson.
We launched a few new initiatives this season that are
designed to improve training and development of our
competition age groups and provide improved safety of this
group during mid-week training.
The introduction of Board Leasing to the competition age
groups ensured that our U11-U14’s could be correctly
matched to the appropriate weight board for training
and competition throughout the season, whilst ensuring
a sense of ownership and responsibility for the care and
management of this essential but expensive equipment.
Many thanks to Geoff Elliott and Dawn Jones who took the
reins and managed the process of collection and retrieval of
the boards at the end of the season.
A number of thankfully minor incidents during mid-week
training early in the season saw the junior committee
implement best practices with respect to the safety of our
youngest group of competitive members. The policy of
wearing pink vests and ensuring IRB coverage for all training
sessions greatly improves the ability of rapid recovery in the
event of any unfortunate incident, and thanks must go to
Sandy Clarke and her coaching team, Nik Upston and
Lloyd Brosens for quickly implementing and enforcing this
policy for the remainder of the season.
From a competition standpoint, our skills training on the
beach and in the surf during mid-week training and on
Sundays obviously bore signifi cant rewards, with Mullaloo
SLSC consistently dominating results all season, culminating
in our back to back State Junior Champion Club award at
Fremantle in March by a considerable margin over Sorrento.
We introduced a number of new Age Group Managers into
the fold this season, including Matthew Quin and Rebecca
Copland (U9) and Michelle Pratt (U7). Thanks for putting
your hands up to take on this challenging yet rewarding role.
Our Junior Committee was kept busy during the season, from
arranging sausage sizzles, Halloween Discos, entertainment
at the Country Carnival in Geraldton, and a number of other
events throughout the season. A hearty thankyou to the
JCOM for a fantastic season, including Dawn Jones, Geoff
Elliott, Julie Madden, Mike Bubrzycki and Zoe Fulcher.
This club is run by volunteers. Many of our junior member’s
families have contributed in many ways throughout the
season and we thank you for your support of this signifi cant
part of Mullaloo SLSC. A special thank you has to go to our
Junior Volunteer Award recipients for 2012/13, Sarah and
Roger Gregson, who seemed to be at every function,
training event, club day and competition, providing water
safety and anything else that was required all season.
As was highlighted in the May newsletter, I have decided
to step down from the role of Manager of Juniors for next
season and focus on work and personal commitments. I
must thank both Anne-Marie Widermanski and Carlo
Tenaglia and the Board and Management of this wonderful
club for providing me with support in this challenging yet
rewarding role over the past two years. I have thoroughly
enjoyed the responsibility of stewardship of our youngest
members and as I will miss the fun on a Sunday morning,
I have put my name forward to return to the role of Age
Group Manager for the upcoming season.
See you on the Beach.

U14 BOYS | SIMON FARMER
A big thank you to all of the U14 Boys who participated in
their fi nal season as juniors at Mullaloo SLSC for 2012/13.
The season began relatively early with a core group of boys
attending training on Saturday morning, honing their skills
on boards for the season ahead. It certainly paid off , with
many personal and team achievements in the competition
arena. Many thanks to everyone who put a lot of time and
eff ort into organizing the Jurien Bay Camp with a memorable
time being had by all. It was a jam packed season with
all boys completing their SRC. To see boys who were not
keen to take on the competitive side of lifesaving, turning
up on weekends to patrol, makes my role as AGM all the
more rewarding.
This season, as in previous years, would not have run as
smoothly as it did without the invaluable help of my Liasion,
Fiona Gatey. It has been an honour to help guide you over
the years and I wish you all the very best not only in Surf
Lifesaving for next season but in any future challenges that
you pursue.
U14 GIRLS | JENNI WOOD
The 2012/13 season sees our U14 Girls say goodbye to Junior
competition and enter a new journey as Seniors.
Our season started early with 7 girls and 8 boys hitting the
water Saturday mornings throughout winter, getting board
skills competition ready. The cold start was all the more
enjoyable with Amanda Knight’s amazing muffi ns.
The season highlight was the U14 Camp at Jurien Bay, where
our SRC Trainer Steve Dargie devoted his time and travel to
ensure our kids were assessment ready – on the day of his
son’s Bucks night! Thanks Steve – that’s dedication! 24 girls
completed their SRC, now becoming valuable patrolling
members.
Our core group of 11 competitors gave great representation
in both Beach and Water arenas at all Carnivals, resulting in 7
Medals at Junior States – 2 Gold, 1 Silver and 4 Bronze.
The results were fantastic, but Surf Club isn’t just about
competition. Congratulations to all the girls who
demonstrated improvement in all disciplines of Surf
Lifesaving. It has been a privilege to witness the wonderful
friendships and camaraderie developed between them.
Jake Libbis again demonstrated his commitment and
leadership as AGM Assistant. Jake has been a fantastic asset
to our age group – thank you very much Jake!
THANK YOU

Thanks also to the mums, dads, brothers & sisters who
provide the much needed Water Safety on Club Days,
Carnivals and Training sessions, – without you we
cannot get the group into the water.

U13 BOYS | AARON BRINKWORTH
We are all extremely proud of our U13 Boys this season. They
have continued to progress amazingly well through the
junior ranks and by next season we are sure to have a brilliant
group of kids ready and raring to go and commence their
community service responsibilities as patrolling members of
our great club.
This season we have seen a resurgence in our competition
abilities and results both from intra and inter-club as well
as State Championships. Congratulations to those who
competed at State Championships and represented their
club to the highest of their ability, helping the club to come
away with such fantastic results. We had a solid team of 12
boys for State Championships with most boys placing in the
points or high fi nishes in semi-fi nals.
Next season sees many changes including our graduation
to full sized racing boards, training for and performing
lifesaving duties. It will be a pleasure to see this wonderful
group of boys take these new challenges by the horns. We
will be employing a slightly diff erent approach in order to
guide these boys into becoming our future “Hero’s of the
Sun and Surf” as we focus on further developing confi dence,
independence and resilience. A fi nal thanks to our awesome
A/AGM’s Mark Papadopoff and Adam Wilmot as well as
Dawn Jones, our Liaison who has kept us well organised all
season.
U13 GIRLS | MANDY LEE
Girls, girls, girls, what a fun year! Firstly, thanks to Jen
Beevers for her unwavering support and help. Thanks to
our wonderful parents who are always hands on with Water
Safety, being Offi cials, preparing the sausage sizzles upstairs,
taking snaps of the kids so we can remember these fun times,
helping me with running the group, warm-ups, education
and being there when I could not be. You all know who you
are, and I won’t name anyone for fear of missing somebody
inadvertently! We have had some fun times with the U13
Boys (thanks Aaron and gang!) and we look forward to
forging further bonds between the two groups next season.
I look forward to seeing you all during the winter for Mal and

U12 BOYS | MYLES LAING
The U12 Boys had another great season for 2012/13. All
34 boys performed brilliantly this season in competition,
education and teamwork, they worked hard and trained
hard which paid off . There were many highlights throughout
the season and the eff ort the boys put in was rewarded with
medals, awards or personal bests so well done to you all!
Special thanks go to our A/AGM, Ian Curry and Tom
Bubrzycki, who supported and encouraged the
development of the U12 Boys over the season. Thank you
to our Liaison, Virginia Lipscombe, for keeping us all well
informed and of course a big thank you to all the parents
that help in Water Safety, as Offi cials and coaching.
U12 GIRLS | MIKE BUBRZYCKI
This close knit group of girls has once again represented the
club in a manner that makes us all extremely proud of their
eff orts. In a season packed full of Carnivals, Club days and
training, their enthusiasm to participate in all aspects of surf
lifesaving continued and strengthened throughout the year.
The highlight of the season always seems to be the Country
Carnival and Geraldton was no exception, with 16 of the
girls trekking north to take on and conquer the surf and
sand of Mahomets Flats. Congratulations girls, on another
spectacular year and look forward to doing it all again.
U11 BOYS | NAT MORRIS
A big well done to all U11 Boys this year. Participation
and eff ort on the beach and in the water was on so many
occasions inspirational. Our taste of competition gave

with racing and our boys demonstrated skills, sportsmanship
and teamwork way beyond their years. There were personal
achievements (I’m told it feels pretty good to be able to
swim around the cans at the age of 10 when you know your
parents can’t and even better when you can run 1km faster
than your dad) and team achievements such as our medal
winning relay teams. But the biggest achievements of all
were the friendships made on the beach amongst the boys
over the season. These are the kinds of friendships that form
through experiencing really amazing things together and
become lifelong friendships. Thank you to all the parents

boys when the going got tough. Thanks to Scott for your
great work as liaison – a fantastic job. And thanks to Sue for
your endless help and support every year. Enjoy your winter

U11 GIRLS | GEOFF ELLIOTT
Well, what a big 2012/13 it has been for my U11 Girls.
They started off with a lot of the girls not even wanting to
go in the water and by the end of the year, it was hard to get
them out. The improvement in all the girls has been great to
see and also made me very proud. We were lucky this season
to have the assistance of Hannah and Lewis. They continue
to turn up each week and their popularity with the kids
is evident.
Some of the U11s competed at Junior Surf lifesaving
Carnivals in their fi rst season of competition. Congratulations
for giving it a go. I would also like to recognise Chalise Pratt
for her achievements in the states. Lastly, a special thanks
also to the parents who help out. Hope to see everyone back
on the beach next season.
U10 | ANDREW COMPSON & SIMON GIDLEY
Another fun and full-on season for the U10s has come to an
end once again!
The season began back in October 2012 with the Profi ciency
Swim Tests at Arena for 66 registered Girls and Boys and
culminated with the group qualifying through and gaining
their Surf Safe 1 Certifi cates.
The U10s had their fi rst real taste of competition when a
mini-carnival was held in December with Sorrento, Mindarie
Quinns and Yanchep. Another event with the same clubs
was hosted in February by Sorrento. All the Mullaloo team
displayed great levels of eff ort during both events and
demonstrated that there is a lot of promise to come for their
move up to U11 next season.
U9 | MATTHEW QUIN
I had three main skill improvement focus areas for the U9s
throughout the season:
1. Surf swimming;
2. Board skills; and
3. Flags, especially focusing on fl ag starts.
The group spent a lot of time in the above areas and
everyone especially enjoyed the long swims out to the cans
at the start of each session as well as the lying down fl ag
starts that we incorporated into almost every activity.
Rebecca, Jess, Ciara and myself had a great time and
were extremely impressed at how enthusiastically the kids
participated in each activity and how dramatically their
confi dence and skills in the above focus areas had improved
by the end of the season.
We are looking forward to the next season and please keep
up with your swimming during the off -season.
U8 | ANDREW BROWN
This year we had a registered intake of 71 children, made up
of 29 girls and 42 boys. Of these we had regular attendance
from 21 and 37 boys.
At the beginning of the season it was noted, during the
profi ciency swim that 3 boys would need to be observed
closely in the water, whilst the rest of the under 8 nippers
showed varying degrees of swimming profi ciency. The
level of confi dence in the surf amongst the age group was
of a remarked improvement from that the same time the
previous year.
Midway through the season we started using boards and I
am pleased to report that the majority of children took up
this challenge with great enthusiasm and confi dence By the
end of the season it was a pleasure to watch the majority of
nippers take on waves with the fun and confi dence required
whilst showing improved levels of surf awareness and basic
understanding of surf conditions, which was encouraging
and rewarding.
On the beach the kids, for the most part, enjoyed the active
activities and games, both from a marginally competitive
point of view and a teamwork initiative. We continued
to work on early ‘fl ags’ skills, and building stamina, whilst
encouraging interaction and teamwork. Ironman races and
relays were very popular.
Tamieka, Danieka and Chelsea were a wonderful help
throughout the season along with consistent help from
MULLALOO SLSC 2012/13 ANNUAL REPORT 23
George Westcott. We split the group
into 4 subgroups which helped in
particular with sign in and out of the
Nippers which is usually the most
laborious task.
I look forward to the new season as we
advance to U9s with more exciting and
interesting challenges.
U7 | MICHELLE PRATT
Our white capped Nippers came to the
beach in October for their fi rst season,
with varying degrees of skill and
enthusiasm. Through the hard work and
encouragement of our AGM assistants
(Thank you Melanie, Glenda, Jasper,
Charlotte, Scott, Jake, Rebecca and
Grace) and parents, they made a great
team and grew in self-belief and skill.
They also made some great new friends
in the process. With the emphasis on
fun and confi dence building, the U7s
had a varied programme of beach and
water activities that included some
obstacle courses which they enjoyed
immensely. They have made a great
start to becoming Surf Lifesavers!
Thank you too to Chelsea Wenz who
kept us well informed and on our toes
throughout the season in regards to
the clubs activities.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
Gayle Gould | Manager Youth Development
Mullaloo Surf Club is fortunate to have a large group of
youth, aged between 15–22 years willing to participate
in numerous activities within and outside of the club.
Mullaloo Youth committee consists of 10 young members
who contribute to the organisation and implementation of
events and are to be commended on their contributions
throughout the year.
The annual Cadet Camp took place down South, during
the October school holidays. This camp is aimed at club
members new to the Senior ranks and between the ages
of 15–17 years. All enjoyed an exciting, challenging and
rewarding experience, where each Cadet forged friendships
and learnt more about themselves and their abilities.
Our youth members have been benefi cial in contributing
to programs and events within the general community,
two of our youth members assisted at a Youth Care camp
in Guilderton, a group of committee members presented
educational beach safety programs to afterschool groups
and Girl Guides. We had young members line the catwalk and
assist the models at the Joondalup Festival Fashion parade
held at Mullaloo beach. A “Opportunities for Life, Have a Go”
day was organised to present various opportunities available
for involvement within the club to young members and was
so successful that more of these days will be planned for
integration by new and potential members.
Four of our members represented Mullaloo impeccably at
the annual Rise Up camp which is a leadership camp held by
SLSWA and is designed to aid in the development of young
15–17 year old Surf Lifesavers.
Our new Youth March Past team collected a silver medal at
senior states.
So far on the social scene, we saw our members attend an
evening of ice skating where much fun was had, lessons
learnt and memories made!
The Mullaloo SLSC State Youth River Cruise, organised
by our very own Youth Committee was successful once

again and was sold out within days of tickets going on
sale. Young members from Mullaloo, Trigg, Scarborough,
Fremantle, Coogee, Port Bouvard and Mandurah clubs, were
transported from their clubs by bus, enjoyed an evening of
cruising, dancing and pizza consumption together and were
transported back to their various clubs again at the end of
the night.
Many more youth activities are to be planned for the

28 MULLALOO SLSC 2012/13 ANNUAL REPORT
My philosophy has been to broaden the opportunities
for members to be involved in surf sports. By
increasing the range of competitive standards
(novice to elite), improving the range of coaching
and offi ciating entry points and support, raising the
standard of equipment and ensuring the full range of
disciplines are on off er, our Club has become a more
welcoming and inclusive environment.
This has taken much coordination between the
senior and junior coaches, age group managers, team
managers and management committee. Another
coordinating role has been to imrpove the linkage
of surf sports activities to other aspects of the Club
(e.g. social, youth, education).
Let’s keep building on this philosophy, as the results
are speaking for themselves.
They say “success breeds success”, but it also brings
great demands. Our Club’s improved competitive
capability has increased the demand for coaching
and competition services. To meet this demand,
I encourage all members to step forward into
support and leadership roles, because it is only with
the contribution of our Club members, will our Club
reach its full potential.

MULLALOO SLSC 2012/13 ANNUAL REPORT 29
Coaching is not only a key driver of success in the
competition arena – it also has a signifi cant infl uence on the
culture of our Club. Volunteer coaches continue to supply a
great service to our members, evidenced by the results of
our competitors and their understanding of the values of
the Club.
Our coaching program now off ers a transition from junior
to senior competition and coaching. Our junior coaches can
now progress to senior coaching capability, through the
tiered coaching system.
In particular, these avenues are introducing our older youth
to new disciplines (IRB’s, Surf Boats, Senior First Aid etc.) that
they cannot access as juniors. This is reinforced by the social
mixing opportunities and “Have a Go” sessions such as at the
Season Opener at Cervantes. These older youth may well
have left the club had we not created a clear pathway to
these new opportunities.
LEARNING – ACCREDITATION
Six members received their Level 1 Surf Offi cial accreditation
this season. Of particular note were fi rst year members, the
Traill’s, who immediately took on the challenge of offi ciating.

JUNIORS
“Winners of the 2012/13 State Junior Titles – Mullaloo SLSC!!”
– AGAIN, by a long way! Thanks to the many Age Group
Managers and assistants who have provided vital early stage
coaching and supported the tiered coaching structure.
Thanks also to our specialist discipline junior coaches for
their generous time and building the consistent link through
to senior level competition capability. A special thanks to the
midweek junior coaches in the water disciplines, since they
also had to adjust to the use of additional safety measures
implemented by our Club.
CHAMPION LIFESAVER AND FIRST AID
Thanks for the coaches in this area for consolidating the
start we’ve made in the last two years. Looking forward to
an earlier start to the training and coaching to improve our
performance in this area.
POOL RESCUE
A couple of season’s worth of eff ort sees more competitors
and our coaches and offi cials rising to the standard required
to build competitiveness. We have the diffi culty of timing
to contend with – the pool rescue series starts immediately
after the Aussies. So, pool rescue specifi c training will need
to be factored into our future coaching program.
CLUB GYM
Gym use has increased with more competitors seeing it as
a vital part of their training. Seems there’s a spike in usage
especially after each Bronze group qualifi es. Additional
gym equipment has been ordered and awaits the
development and modifi cation of the gym area to
accommodate it – we will be addressing this over the winter
break. Thanks to the Gym Supervisers for delivering the vital
gym inductions.
SURF BOATS
Surf boat sweeps and coaches committed to the introduction
of a formal tiered coaching system this season. As a result, all
boaties are now clear on the Club’s competitive focus and
expectations. Looking forward to further refi ning this in the
new season.
Numbers at the surf boat development squad continue
to grow – with all sorts of members (transitioning juniors,
competitive seniors and fi tness seekers) trying this exciting
discipline. It’s also been a great place for upcoming sweeps
to start out. So, have there been results? Sure have – Rob
Szewczak came across from river rowing into surf boats
through the development squad and now, as part of the
Mullaloo Barracuda’s, has a State Open Men’s gold medal!
Thanks to Simon Gidley for delivering the fi tness training
sessions for the boaties (and others).
IRB RACING
The IRB Racing squad has grown to 22 members and the
coaches have implemented a mid-week fi tness training
session to take these to the ‘next level’. Weekend water
training sessions and joint sessions with other clubs have
helped to enhance the skills of these members. Early results
suggest that our squad are now on pace with the best in
the State.

kept engaged in a formal training and social activity. This

MULLALOO SLSC 2012/13 ANNUAL REPORT 31
The 2012/13 season saw our Club represented by our senior
competitors in 40 events in Western Australian and across
the country. These included series for Board, Ski, Swim, Boat
and Beach, Pool Rescue Development Workshops, Interclub
carnivals, State, Australian and World Championships.
Results are listed on pp. 33-36, so I will highlight stand-out
performances in this report that represent some of the ground
breaking eff orts of our members in the competitive arena.
Although competitor numbers were slightly down this
season, the base of future competitors is growing due to our
inclusive approach. I expect a massive Mullaloo presence at
the 2014 Aussies at Scarborough.
OFFICIALS
“It’s the best seat in the house”, said John Hillen, one of our
newest Surf Offi cials. That’s one of the many benefi ts our club
members have received by offi ciating this season. Thank you
to the 29 offi cials listed next page – who have ensured our
competitors are able to compete and have contributed to
their development.
SUNDAY CLUB DAY
One of the best examples of our welcoming and inclusive
culture are the Sunday Club days. Kicking off with the Club
swim, members from every discipline, age and capability
enjoy our fabulous beach to train, particularly in team events
with a consistent turn out over the season.
Over the season we held three points days, a Club
Championship and an additional Masters points day. These
days assisted coaches to select teams and provided a
competitive training option for members.
Thanks to the Beach Setup Crew and Alison Gerrard,
Katrina West, Tracey and Carlo Tenaglia, Laurie and Ros
de Mamiel, Lindsey Dixon, Judi Baker and Russell and
Gayle Gould for helping run the days and recording results,
along with many other members who organised competitors
and assisted.
TED SCOTT MARATHON
The annual Ted Scott Marathon was again a great test of
our member’s endurance on the 16 December 2012, with
more than 80 senior and masters competitors. Thank you to
all the competitors and supporters for continuing this great
club tradition.
MASTERS COMPETITION
Our Club continues to excel at Masters competition. A growing
number of ‘older’ members are enjoying the dedicated
Masters activities our Club now off ers (e.g. specifi c Masters
training sessions and a fun ‘entry level’ Masters carnival). This
has translated to more Mullaloo competitors at the State
Masters and some super results – Mullaloo fi nished second
overall in the Masters State Championships.
STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
The State Championships was attended by our Club team
of 85 strong who achieved an overall Club placing of 4th for
the 2012/13 Season.
For the fi rst time ever, Mullaloo won the Lifesaver Relay (by
only a metre): open mens surf boat team – Paul Beattie,
Marcus Blake, Steve Hilyear, Dave Holmes, Rob Szewczak,
swim – Brett Gould, board – Ross Briggs, ski – Brad Taylor
and run – Grace Wilkinson. The win also allowed the team to
represent WA at the Aussies.

Surf Sports – Competition | Continued
The U17 males had a great Championships, especially Brett
Gould, winning 7 gold, 5 silver and 2 bronze medals over
the championships which includes the State Titles weekend
and other the Championship events of pool rescue, belt
racing, fi rst aid and champion lifesaver. Josh Clarke also
had a grand total of 14 medals, with Nic de Bomford not
far behind with 12 medals and Eric Fortmann fi nishing his
championship season with 8 medals – of which 7 were gold.
Mullaloo won the A.D. Scott Cup for the highest point score
calculated for U19 events. With an outstanding performance
by Ross Briggs, hauling in 12 medals (7 gold, 2 silver, 3 bronze),
the U19s dominated their age group events, including Jack
Retty (6 gold, 2 silver, 3 bronze), Sam Wood (3 gold, 1 silver, 3
bronze) and Laura Edmunds (3 silver, 4 bronze).
The upset win of the season went to our Open Men Surf
Boat crew, the Barracudas – Paul Beattie, sweep and
rowers Steve Hilyear, Dave Holmes, Robert Szewczak
and Marcus Blake. This was the fi rst time our Club has won
the event, putting their name on the State Surf Boat sheild,
which started in 1927.
STATE REPRESENTATIVES
Once again this year, we had a number of representatives
on the State team, including: Nic de Bomford, Brett Gould,
Wes Gould, Hayley Miller, Wes Thomson and Sam Wood.
Hayley Miller, Ben Jones and Sam Deans were also
selected in the High Performance Squad.
AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
Our Aussie touring team had a successful week at North
Kirra in Queensland on 15-21 April 2013. The touring party
of 48, included 35 competitors (includes march past). This
was a smaller touring group than previous years but their
results were outstanding, making 16 fi nals over all (3 open
fi nals), between Masters and Open Championships.
It was great to bring home some medals, which included
a gold in the Masters 140s female surf boats – Mullaloo
Marlins: Paul Beattie (sweep), Sandy Clarke, Rachel
Greene, Rachel Kremer, Claire Whitelaw, a silver medal in
the u15 2km beach run – Jake Smith and a bronze medal in
the Masters 44-49 years Beach Flags – Jeff Davidson.
With the Aussies at Scarborough in 2014, we expect a strong
showing from Mullaloo.
RESCUE 2012 – LIFE SAVING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Brett Gould, Josh Clarke and Trevor Bulley ventured to
Adelaide to compete in the World’s, with Trevor now the
world champion in Masters 55-59 years Mens Beach Sprint.

MULLALOO SLSC 2012/13 ANNUAL REPORT 37
I was appointed to the position of General Manager
of Support Services in August 2012. My goal this
season was to assist the Club mould itself around
the new management structure and to gain a better
understanding of where the Club needed to go.
This coming season I envisage changes will greet
our members upon the opening of next season and
along with the focus of achieving the Clubs strategic
goals, this will bring about a new vitality to the Club.
This season, three managers continued their
wonderful service, Tracey Tenaglia – Administration,
John Hillen – Finance and Lyn Brosens –
Membership. Garry Addison threw his hat into the
ring and took on the position of Facilities Manager.
Even though the Marketing Manager’s position was
vacant throughout this year I did have one of the
Club’s Directors, Vicki Rasmussen, oversee and
undertake numerous marketing opportunities during
the season. One of those sponsorship’s providing
immediate benefi ts to the competition area with the
Mullaloo Beach Hotel sponsored surf boat bringing
home two gold medals.
Thank you to my managers, their families and their
portfolio’s volunteers for a great 2012/13 season and
I encourage you all to do it again for season 2013/14.

38 MULLALOO SLSC 2012/13 ANNUAL REPORT
This season has seen signifi cant changes in the
Administration area which has helped streamline our
fi nancial services for the Club and ensuring a greater level
of effi ciency and professionalism. The implementation of
the new MYOB accounting system at the end of last season
and the inclusion of remote portal access has allowed both
Offi ce staff and the Manager of Finance the ability to better
manage our club’s fi nances.
A change in roles saw Karen Oliver and Robyn Turnbull
swap desks with Karen taking on a fi nancial role and Robyn
up the front in reception and administration. This has off ered
them both a challenge, as they adjusted to the roles. It also
provided them an opportunity to cross skill their knowledge
of all the administrative and fi nancial needs of the Club
and members. One of our initiatives also this season was
to replace our photocopier. We are now the proud owner
of a colour photocopier which will allow us to produce
professional quality colour documents and reduce our out
of offi ce printing costs.
We are also looking at changing the offi ce hours during
the “off season” with the offi ce being open fi ve days a week
and with changed opening times. We are looking at ways
to reduce the ever increasing workload on our General
Managers and Managers and they will be able to use more
offi ce services. Thank you to the Offi ce Staff for your hard
work and patience over the season, especially with the
change in management and activities.
As always the Offi ce on Sundays is expertly managed by a
dedicated group of ladies. Thank you for your support and
assistance, ensuring that our members are always availed of
the information and assistance they need.
Our Club website and Facebook pages were again managed,
this season, by Sandy Clarke, providing access for our Club
members to up to date Club information, view photos of
their competitive eff orts and check when they were next
on patrol. The newsletters continued to be a source of
enlightenment and information and thanks to both the
“Editor” and Sandy for their professionalism and creative
humour.

FACILITIES
Garry Addison | Manager Facilities
To go from Bar Manager to Facilities Manager was never
going to be an easy transformation especially given that I
am probably the world’s worst handyman, I was going to
be challenged to maintain a Surf Club to an acceptable
standard. However sometimes the best way to learn is to
take a step back, a deep breath and ask the people who
know.
With all that in mind I would sincerely like to thank every
person who assisted, supported and off ered help and
assistance throughout the year. In the end I think we
achieved some small steps this year and hopefully next year
the full extent of some of our initiatives will bear fruit.
Chase the Ace on Friday Nights was rekindled this year and
at the time of writing it had jackpotted to in excess of $1,100.
Friday Nights have now become a popular night with people
hoping there ticket gets called out and then if it doesn’t that
the lucky person, who did, doesn’t pick the “Ace of Spades”.
I would like to thank Alex from Fantasy Dive, Bret Madden,
Wade Starr (Sonos) and David Cronk for their fantastic
sponsorship and support of this event.
We tried a couple of new initiatives this year to try and
attract people to the Club on Sunday Nights. Unfortunately,
opening at 4.00 pm did not prove popular and we eventually
resorted back to our normal time of 5.00 pm.
We also initiated a lucky member draw on Sundays and we
did have a lucky member, ELLY SAGAR, take out the Member
draw and she is now $1,000 richer for her experience.
Congratulations Elly.
My thanks to the Social Committee who ran the New Year’s
Eve party, with the theme “Around the World”. It was a great
night with around 250 people to see the new year in. The
Social Committee, along with Steve Dargie, were also
responsible for the magnifi cent fundraiser for Mitch Cleary
and we are grateful for your support for a worthy cause.
As mentioned previously we have a number of ideas and
thoughts on how we can improve our club facilities for
next year. The facilities are in need of continual repair
and improvement and hopefully some of these ideas will
revitalise them within the constraints of our ever tightening
budget.
Finally, a very big thank you to the many people/volunteers
who have helped behind the bar, with our busy bees and
with the never ending ongoing maintenance. There are too
many of you to mention, but my sincere gratitude for your
help is appreciated.

MARKETING
Vicki Rasmussen | Overseeing Marketing
Once again The Club has been fortunate to enjoy the great
support of many local businesses and families with a wide
range of activities including signifi cant fi nancial support. The
Club is so grateful to have these relationships and pleased
that we can provide tangible benefi ts for our members.
The City of Joondalup continues to be our largest supporter.
Through their support we enjoy the fabulous Club rooms
and facilities that continue to be the envy of many up and
down the coast.
This year new partnerships have allowed us to provide new
opportunities.
The Mullaloo Beach Hotel has continued their long
standing partnership with The Club and this year increased
their generous support. They came on board as the sponsor
of the Club’s brand new surf boat. This was the boat that
went on to create the biggest upset at this year’s Senior
State Championships when the Barracudas won the Open
Men’s Surf Boat race. This same boat then saw our Females
win GOLD at the Aussie’s Masters Competition in QLD.
Another great partnership this year was developed in
conjunction with members Greg and Lindsey Dixon.
Through their generous support The Club has been able
to begin to develop a high performance training and
competition squad. With talented and successful Junior
and Senior members coming through the ranks we want to
ensure that we off er the best opportunities on the coast for
those members who are looking to take their competition
to the next level.
This year through the support of Jetts Fitness our
prominence on the beach was enhanced. Their support
enabled us to purchase a couple of large sun tents. Not
only have these tents provided a great placed for Water
Safety to sign in on most Junior Club Days, they have made
the rounds with Mullaloo teams to all major competitions
this year.
These are just a couple of examples of the great support
Mullaloo SLSC receives. There are many others, including
some wonderful personal donations. We are truly grateful
to all our sponsors and supporters. We could not do it alone.

MEMBERSHIP
Lyn Brosens | Manager Membership
Another fulfi lling surf club season has passed and the
Membership portfolio has run smoothly and effi ciently as
usual, due to the excellent support received from many
members who contribute to the administration of the club.
The main focus of Membership is to ensure that the annual
registration process during July and August occurs in a timely
fashion, with all of the necessary data being entered into the
national Surfguard database. With over 1,800 members this
is an enormous task requiring many hours of work.
LONG SERVICE MEMBERSHIP STATUS
Each year members who meet the requirement of ten
years of continuous patrolling service are entitled to apply
for reclassifi cation of their membership status to Long
Service. It is gratifying to observe that every year there are
more members who fulfi l this requirement demonstrating
their continuing commitment to the club. The following
members were awarded long service: Guy Edwards, Craig
Whitehead, Jenny Orme and Richard Orme.
LIFE MEMBERSHIP
Long serving members who have made an outstanding
contribution to the life of the club are invited to submit a
portfolio detailing their commitment to Mullaloo and its
members. This year Amanda Lee (Mandy) has been awarded
the status of Life Member in recognition of her involvement
in training, coaching and competition over many years.
Mandy is an inspirational athlete and role model in her fi eld
who has devoted many hours to training others.
SURF CAGE
The Mullaloo Surf Cage went through a transition of
management this year and the new managers and volunteers
have operated the shop most effi ciently, supplying members
with a stylish range of Mullaloo bathers and clothing every
Friday night and Sunday morning. Our Cage continues to be
the best equipped on the coast, stocked with a wide range of
Mullaloo bathers, rashies, T-shirts, caps and the ever popular
hoodies and jackets, which members wear with pride, even
when not on the beach.
ANNUAL AWARDS
The annual awards night was held on the 10th of May in
the stunning venue of AQWA, commencing with cocktails
in the undersea tunnel and followed by a buff et dinner in
the function room. Members were joined by distinguished
guests, Troy Pickard, Albert Jacobs and Mal Washer.
The format of the Awards having changed this year, this
evening was reserved for the club’s most prestigious awards,
recognising training, coaching, lifesaving, offi ciating in
competition and administrating.Amanda Lee receives Life Membership at the 2012/13 Mullaloo SLSC
Awards of Excellence, presented by President, Carlo Tenaglia.

MEMBERSHIP
The task of running the Membership portfolio relies on the
administrative and organisational skills of many people. In
a club this size, there is an enormous amount of paperwork
related to the annual registration process; the ordering,
stocking and sale of gear in the Surf Cage and the registration
of members for education and lifesaving courses. None
of this would be possible without the tireless support of a
small group of people who have committed many hours
collectively.

MULLALOO SLSC 2012/13 ANNUAL REPORT 43
The club had a great year from a fi nancial perspective
fi nishing the fi nancial year with a respectable profi t of
$88,672 and a healthy cash balance of $342,560.
A big reason why we made a small loss last year was the cost
of the 50th Year Anniversary celebration and the publishing
of our 50th Year book. Obviously without these costs this
year, the bottom line has improved.
A disappointing fi nancial fact this year has been the
downturn in turnover of both the bar and our gear shop
– “The Cage”. The gross margin remained relatively stable
which was good, however the club relies on these entities
for its cash fl ow and by purchasing clothing and items
from “The Cage” and refreshments from the bar, it is one
way the membership base can really support the club on an
ongoing basis.
In spite of the above fact, our total income for the year was
up $37,169 on last year’s income:
• marketing income was up $29,409 on last year, thanks
to the increased sponsorship from the City of
Joondalup and the much appreciated contribution
from the Dixon family;
• Income from the running of our numerous education
awards was up $10,509 on last year;
• The junior board leasing programme raised $10,300 this
year. This was the fi rst year the leasing programme was
run and goes a long way to ensuring we have funds
available for the replacement of boards. New board
purchases this year totalled $26,037;
• Membership registration income was up $4,757 on
last year.
Expenses, in total, were down $56,422 on last year’s fi gure. If
we extract last year’s 50th Anniversary expenses of $55,731,
it indicates that we were able to keep the overall cost of
running the club stable, when comparing year on year
and in an environment of rising wages and costs. This is a
credit to the management team in the monitoring of their
expenses and sticking to budget where possible.
Other expenditure items worth mentioning include:
• New equipment purchases in the Senior competition
area were down on last year but still included
expenditure of $27,278 on new boards, skis, oars and the
balance of payment of the new surf boat;
• Although total Facilities expenditure was down $6,699
on last year, the electricity expense remains high and
is something all club members should be more aware
of when utilising the club’s premises. Repairs and
maintenance costs were high this year as our clubhouse
begins to show the eff ect of servicing close to 2,000
members;
• New junior boards costing $26,037 were purchased
this year;
• Another major capital purchase this year, and probably
the most visible to the members and the public, was the
4WD beach patrol vehicle. This cost the club $22,260
and is certainly well utilised.
The club remains in a good fi nancial position going forward
and the fi nancial stability of the club forms a solid foundation
as it embarks on a new strategic direction.
