From the DirectorFiscal Year 2013 • July 1, 2012 - June 30, 2013

What an amazing year we experienced in fiscal year 2013! From the completion of our eight-year capital campaign and the opening of the Katherine Kilbourne Burgum Center for Creativity, to helping the Defiant Gardens projects take firmer root with major grant funding, to presenting exhibitions that included Andy Warhol, D.J. Spooky (Paul D. Miller), Marjorie Schlossman, Wing Young Huie, and George Morrison, the Museum reached new heights of artistic adventure, scholarship, and quality.

We achieved a monumental goal this fiscal year with the completion of our long-term capital campaign, “There’s a Little Artist in All of Us.” This campaign allowed us to make improvements in the Atrium, to commission James Rosenquist to create the breathtaking North Dakota Mural (installed in 2010), to increase our endowment to $2 million, and to renovate four adjacent buildings into the much-anticipated Center for Creativity. The Center was named for Katherine Kilbourne Burgum, whose family made a major gift from her estate to the project. With its focus on youth, art, education, and community improvement, the Center matched K. Burgum’s contributions to our community during her lifetime (she passed away in 2005). We’re proud to carry on her legacy in our expanded programs and greater impact on our community and region.

After many years of dreaming, planning, fundraising, and refurbishing, we proudly opened the Katherine Kilbourne Burgum Center for Creativity on September 30, 2012. The grand opening and dedication gave 2,500 visitors a taste of the creative community we are building around this wonderful 27,000-square-foot addition linked to the Museum by the Bradley J. Burgum Skybridge.

The Center is filled with studio classrooms, galleries, and an entire ceramics wing named for Robert Kurkowski, one of the founders of the Fargo Public Schools’ Creative Arts Studio, which is now incorporated into the Center for Creativity’s curriculum. We thank the District leaders at Fargo Public Schools who collaborated with us over many years to achieve this unique partnership between an art museum and a public school district.

Fiscal Year 2013 • July 1, 2012 - June 30, 2013

In FY13, the Center was filled with the energy and exuberance of 5,300 school children who came for gallery-based learning and then art-making classes. An additional 4,800 students came for gallery visits alone. We already are expanding to include other schools and districts in the Center’s opportunities.

This thriving creative space benefits our youth, our artists, our teachers, our Museum members, and people of all ages and backgrounds who take part in our expanded education offerings. K. Burgum, the Center’s namesake, was a community leader, teacher, and devoted mother who understood the important role art plays for individuals, families, and communities. We thank K’s family – Doug, Barbara, James, Julie, the late Brad Burgum, and many more Kilbournes and Burgums—whose generosity made a critical difference to our opening the Center. We are proud to carry on her legacy here.

I deeply thank the intrepid Museum staff, who worked so diligently and creatively to achieve the Center, the opening events, and several new exhibitions. I’m grateful also for the support from the team at Flint Communications, who worked with us on the “Celebrating Our Creative Community” theme, opening events, and promotional materials.

The Museum also continues to cultivate more opportunities for public art and the experiences and place-making it can engender. We were thrilled to receive a $260,000 grant from ArtPlace America in fiscal year 2013 which, combined with other successful grant initiatives, will help us increase the vibrancy of the urban cores of downtown Fargo and neighboring Moorhead by fulfilling artist-led initiatives in Plains Art Museum’s program, Defiant Gardens for Fargo-Moorhead. The

three primary projects include Defiant Garden for the Moorhead Power Plant, Winter Fern Grotto for Fargo, and Pollinator Garden for Plains Art Museum.

The following pages list the slate of exhibitions held in the past year. We were delighted to share such artistic riches in both idea, image, and object with our audiences: to present the ground-breaking work of 20th century icon Andy Warhol; to organize the second project in our ongoing “Mothers of Invention” series with a solo exhibition of paintings, drawings, and architectural collaborations by Fargo-based Marjorie Schlossman; to share Luis Jimenez’s “Sodbuster” sculpture, showing its need for conservation; to commission Minneapolis-based artist-in-residence Wing Young Huie, whose poignant and personal photographs of Fargo-Moorhead residents were later on display; to collaborate with the Minnesota Museum of American Art on a groundbreaking exhibition that testified to the modern spirit of Minnesota native son George Morrison; and to display works by so many other talented international, national, and regional artists.

Looking back, the year was full of accomplishments and change, and a time of new beginnings. It is the beginning of new dreams and aspirations of what our creative community can become and what creative individuals will build to help us solve problems, deepen life experiences, and sustain strong communities together. I look forward to working with you toward that vision.

With gratitude,

Colleen J. Sheehy, Ph.D.Director/CEO

Fiscal Year 2013 • July 1, 2012 - June 30, 2013

ProgramsPLAINS ART CASESThe Museum’s Art Case program is designed to provide art education resources to classrooms in our region that have little or no formal art education in place. Each case is packed with a miniature exhibition of works by regional artists and comes with an education guide that encourages classroom participation. The cases are loaned for free and educators pay no shipping fees.

MUSEUM VISITSEach year, about 10,000 people participate in gallery and studio experiences, led by Plains Art Museum Teaching Artists and our volunteer Plains Art Museum Guides. More than 8,000 of those visitors are students from area public and private schools. The 2012-2013 school year was the first one in which every Kindergarten through 5th grade student from Fargo Public Schools visited the museum for a Gallery + Ceramics experience, using our new clay studio spaces in the Katherine Kilbourne Burgum Center for Creativity.

SCHOOL SPIRIT: YOUTH ART MONTHIn March, the Museum showcases the talents of regional K-12 arts students to increase community awareness of regional arts programs and emphasize the value of the arts and self expression. The Museum also hosts an artists’ reception for more than 300 young area artists and their families, an exciting gathering that includes performances from the Fargo Moorhead Area Youth Symphonies and art-making activities.

KID QUESTKid Quest is a free, family program, held the first Saturday of the month from October through April. The event draws about 250 children and their families each month, offering them the opportunity to explore art in the galleries and then participate in creating an art project together at the Katherine Kilbourne Burgum Center for Creativity. Sponsors are Xcel Energy, Minnesota Public Radio, and The Village Family Magazine.

LECTURES AND GALLERY TALKSThese programs are held to provide context to the work in the galleries and add an element of social connectivity in conjunction with exhibitions. Some of the highlights were the Katherine Kilbourne Burgum Center for Creativity opening with Paul D. Miller/DJ Spooky (aka that Subliminal Kid), discussions with artist-In-residence Wing Young Huie, the Social Practice Think Tank roundtable discussion, and the George Morrison: Art, Life, and Legacy symposium.

STUDIO CLASSES Art-making classes for youth and adults offer opportunities for inquisitive people of all ages. Classes are held at the Katherine Kilbourne Burgum Center for Creativity, a multipurpose arts facility that also offers studio and exhibition space for learning, discussion, and display of creative work. Plains Art Museum’s studio programs focus on developing people’s potential for deeper learning and problem solving through 21st-century skills: creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication. A skybridge connects the original museum building with this 25,500 square foot expansion.
