Five years ago, we set out to achieve a big goal: provide every food-insecure child, adult, and senior in Alameda County with at least one meal a day by 2018. That added up to 90 million meals annually for our community.

We are proud to announce that because of you, we not only met our goal, but exceeded it. Through our combined efforts of food distribution, CalFresh outreach, and advocacy, we provided enough food in FY18 for 106.7 million meals.

ACCFB is strong because of our supporters. It’s this strength that will allow us to better address the root causes of poverty and hunger, and to span beyond providing meals to focus on ways to improve the lives of the people we serve.

This is our focus for the next four years.

We’re a dramatically different organization than we were five years ago. And, we aim to accomplish a great deal in this exciting new era. While we’ll increase our output to 120 million meals annually, we’ll also focus on the long-term work required to dismantle systems that perpetuate poverty.

We’re committed to better understanding who we’re serving, who we aren’t serving yet, and how to better support them. We want to tangibly demonstrate connections between our work and the health and well-being of our community. And, we’re advancing our policy fight by working to eliminate racial and economic disparities to ensure everyone in Alameda County can thrive.

This new vision builds upon the foundation we’ve set over the last three decades. And, it directs us toward a hunger-free Alameda County, knowing the work we do today builds a healthier tomorrow.

None of this, of course, happens without you. For that, we are grateful. Thank you for all you do to make our work possible.

ACHIEVING A BOLD GOALOur FY13-18 Strategic Plan was called one of the boldest food bank plans ever by Feeding America. Your commitment helped inspire it — and it was because of your support and partnership that its achievements went far beyond what we set out to do.

Providing nutritious food is core to our work. We serve 1 in 5 Alameda County residents and continually find new ways to reach more children, adults, and seniors where we live, work, and play.

Strengthening the nutrition safety net in Alameda County is at the core of our mission.

In FY18, we distributed the equivalent of 27 million meals — procured from purchased food, donations, USDA, and our Food Recovery Program. The food was distributed primarily through a network of 200 partner agencies for which, through our Partnership Engagement Program, we provided resources and strategies to improve our collective ability to serve the community. Additionally, we exceeded expansion targets for our direct distribution programs — including our mobile and school pantries — covering 58 sites throughout the county.

CalFresh Outreach to support households who qualify for government nutrition benefits is an essential piece of our mission. In FY18, our 16 full-time, multilingual outreach team members helped 4,826 households apply for and receive benefits which equated to 4.2 million meals. The estimated impact of our CalFresh outreach efforts was $24.3 million in economic stimulus to the local community.

Finally, legislative action is the single most effective means for ending hunger. Our policy team and grassroots anti-hunger advocates have been instrumental in policy wins, such as preventing harmful cuts and helping pass bills that affect food security (read more on page 8). These efforts have put 75.5 million meals on the tables of residents throughout Alameda County since 2013.

In total, by the end of FY18, our combined efforts provided 106.7 million meals to our community — 19 percent above our goal.

Food & Health:Better

Quality of Life

Nutritious food is the cornerstone of good health and well-being. Over the last five years, we established our research department, expanding our efforts to learn about and reach more neighbors. This work enables us to not only provide food, but improve the quality of lives.

In FY18, the American Journal of Public Health published a study on our FAITH-DM Clinical Intervention Trial, which aimed to help diabetics. The study showed participants seeing significant improvement in food security and intake of fresh fruits and vegetables, concluding that food banks play an important role in helping people manage their diabetes.

Our Food Bank also launched the Diabetes Prevention Pilot (DPP), which identifies clients at risk of prediabetes and provides prevention support. ACCFB was the only food bank chosen on behalf of Feeding America to participate in this program. Last year, we screened 461 clients at 12 agency and direct distribution sites. Of the 299 clients who were found to be at high risk for prediabetes, 250 enrolled in the project.

All DPP participants received diabetes-friendly supplemental food packages twice monthly for their households. Participants also received educational text messages focused on physical activity and education, as well as food pickup reminders and other program messages. Program findings are expected to be released in late 2019.

Fighting Hunger,

Ending Poverty

We cannot end hunger without working to end poverty. Bold advocacy efforts increasingly play a key part of our fight against hunger.

Our efforts in FY18 were critical in several 2018 legislative victories. We worked to help pass a state law that will give 51,000 SSI recipients in Alameda County access to CalFresh. Our advocacy team successfully advocated for a bill (AB 1871) requiring California charter schools to provide at least one free or reduced-price meal for low-income students, which will result in 2.8 million meals for food-insecure children. We helped secure state funding for our Food Bank, which will provide an additional 329,500 meals. Because of our efforts, Gov. Jerry Brown increased the CalWORKS grant by $360 million over the course of a year (effective April 2019), resulting in 2.8 million more meals.

Finally, with the Farm Bill up for renewal in FY19, we put considerable effort into preventing unjust cuts to important programs that keep our community nourished and healthy. Our advocacy team attended 22 meetings with lawmakers in Washington, D.C., sending a strong message to reject any amendments that would harm safety net programs like CalFresh. Our work in FY18 protected the structure of SNAP, ensuring continued access for 100,000 Alameda County residents.

Innovationin Our Community

FY18 was a significant year for Alameda County Community Food Bank, marking major turning points in our evolution — including the development of our new strategic plan and our continual evolution to reflect the organization we have become.

For more than 30 years, we have been an innovator in the anti-hunger movement. Through our accomplishments, we know hunger is solvable. However, we also know it’s a problem we cannot solve alone.

Our new logo — more vibrant, multi-dimensional, with the word “Community” in bold — was unveiled in FY18 and is a recognition of this philosophy.

It’s in partnership with our community that we’re able to address hunger and its root causes. Our strategic vision and roadmap for the next four years are the result of feedback and input from contributors, volunteers,

food program participants, foundations, corporations, our agency network, and advocates — all with a vested interest in partnering in our mission.

Our daily work only happens because of 20,000 volunteers who play an evolving role in our work — from packing food to helping in a variety of skills- and professional-based ways, including consulting on ways to improve our facility, making our food drive processing more efficient, and even assisting in the development of our new website.

As we evolve, we are committed to an environment in which our staff, partners, and community can explore new ways — big and small — for our work to be more impactful. We are able to do this work because of you. Thank you.
