President’s ReportIan Clarke

Our 99th year is coming to a close and it has been another fantastic season and a perfect lead in to our 100th year. We certainly have raised the bar again.

Last year I talked about our club developing into a “powerhouse” both in surf competition and as an organsation, and we took another step in striving to be at the forefront of surf lifesaving both locally and nationally. This was evident through the results and awards that we achieved this season.

Significant achievements this year:

• 3rd Overall in Senior State Championships - we have not achieved a top three result for over 40 years

• 1st overall in the Masters State Championships - back to back champions • Runner-Up Club of the Year - SLSWA • Winner Support Operations Volunteer of the Year - SLSWA - Congratulations to Kate Bonner • Winner Trainer of the Year - SLSWA - Congratulations to Domenic Cowdell • Winner U12 Champion – SLSWA - Congratulations to Megan McCaffrey • Winner Junior Achievement Award – SLSWA - Congratulations to Harry Alliss • Winner Youth Achievement Award – SLSWA - Congratulations to Jaxon Hayden

One of the challenges the Board set was to be more inclusive and engage our members across different facets of the club.

Annual Report 2018

We also had five other SLSWA award finalists, a fantastic achievement and recognition of our club and club members.

One of the challenges the Board set was to be more inclusive and engage our members across different facets of the club. To see competitors from all disciplines come together over winter for the Pool Rescue team was awesome. The teams’ results were outstanding with Seniors coming 3rd, Juniors 6th and Masters 1st at the Pool Rescue State Championships. We also had several of our members represent WA as the Western Suns in the Pool Rescue Aussies in Adelaide – well done team!

On the community front, the Club provided support to many organisations outside of Surf Lifesaving; water safety for open water swimming events and triathlons and fundraising for the Leukaemia Foundation. The Club successfully ran the Euroz Cold Water Classic raising over $19,000 for the foundation! Thank you to all our fantastic lifesavers for supporting these events.

Every year I talk about my top 3 highlights, events throughout the year which captures what NCSLSC is all about; supporting one another, success and one team. This year’s highlights were.....

1. Lifesaver Relay win at this year’s Senior State Championships

2. Surf League win in Round 1 of the series held at North Cottesloe beach

3. 3rd overall in the Senior State Championships

The awards and results across all our sections show how well we are going as a Club. We train, compete, win and celebrate as one together.

Lastly I would like to thank the Board of Management who give many hours of work behind the scenes, supported by our fantastic office team. Without this dedicated group we could not have achieved the many successes this year.

I am very proud to be leading the club into our Centenary year and look forward to celebrating with you at one of the many events that our hard working Centenary Committee has planned for us.

The whole club should be very proud of our achievements this year. Thank you and bring on season 100!

During the year we farewelled our Member Services Officer, Stami Kafetzakis and welcomed Jayden Williamson, initially as an intern finishing his Sports Management Degree and then as he stepped officially into the Member Services role. Jayden has proven himself more than capable in all aspects of the role and has brought some additional skills and experience to the office team, particularly in the IT area.

We farewelled our Surf Sports Development Officer, Shannon MacLachlan, who relocated with her family back to New Zealand. Shannon’s work ethic and commitment were second to none and her success in establishing the Tim Roberts Surf Sports Academy and assisting to grow the surf sports areas and success of the club are greatly appreciated.

After an extensive search, we welcomed Brooke Ponchard to the SSDO role. Brooke settled in well over the “off-season” and is now fully entrenched delivering services to our 2018/19 Academy athletes and liaising with Section Captains on the needs of our competitors.

Thanks to Sue Collins for the work undertaken with our academy and junior athletes whilst the SSDO role was vacant. Sue’s work in this regard is greatly appreciated.

Eliza Atkinson continues to undertake excellent work in ensuring the financial records of the club are in first class order as does Kirsty Hayden in the Education/Training portfolio in attending to not only the internal education/training requirements of members but also in looking to realise commercial training opportunities for the Club.

A huge thanks to all staff who often work behind the scenes and, at times, irregular and additional hours to ensure the Club runs smoothly and our members and volunteers are serviced and supported in the best possible way.

There is a great culture of professionalism, endeavour and camaraderie within the office as we strive to continuously improve in all aspects of what we do and the service we provide.

As another successful year passes, we are already full steam ahead in planning for not only our regular activities and events, but 100 years of service to the community as a Surf Life Saving Club.

Annual Report 2018

Thanks again this year to Lance Parker, Pete Rossen and the Trojans for the work they have again undertaken around the Club that is often not acknowledged or appreciated.

At this years SLSWA Awards of Excellence, the excellent work undertaken by our volunteers, ably assisted by the office team was again recognised in coming second in the Club of the Year award and a finalist in the Patrol Club of the year.

Congratulations to all those who contributed to these significant achievements and to our individual winners Dominic Cowdell and Kate Bonner and each of our finalists in the various categories for their achievements.

The reports from each Section and Board members are contained elsewhere in this report so I will not repeat what is contained therein, apart from saying we are on track to become a powerhouse again across all surf sport disciplines with some outstanding competition results overall as a club.

Our Club is supported by a number of very generous sponsors and preferred suppliers which allow us to make a significant contribution in the life saving and other services we offer to the broader community. Thank you to all these people and organisations for your continued commitment and support.

I would like to thank the Board for its support during the year and for the commitment and work that each Board Member undertakes in his or her portfolio. Thank you also to all those who contributed to the Club in any way this year. Your contribution is greatly appreciated.

As we look forward, our Centenary year promises to not only be an exciting celebration of attaining a significant milestone, but a year where we again improve and achieve greater success in all facets of our operations and activities. Success breeds success.

Bring it on!

Treasurer’s ReportLisa Palmer

North Cottesloe SLSC

10

Overall our income for the year was down 11.8% on the previous year.

As a result, despite being successful in maintaining membership numbers and reducing our underlying operating costs by 6%, we were unfortunately unable to avoid reporting a small reported accounting loss for the financial year after depreciation, our first for many years. Poor ticket sales to certain events contributed also to this position.

Pleasingly though our commercial activities through education and lifesaving IRB sections continued to provide a positive contribution to the club and we continued to run all planned development activities.

As the incoming treasurer, it has been pleasing to see how well run the club is administratively under Rick and his team who have worked tirelessly and done a great job navigating through website & system changes, surfguard and patrol data reconciliations, member education and event and competition logistics, whilst maintaining support to the Board of Management, Section Captains, the Centenary Committee and all those who give their time to the club.

The 2018 year for North Cottesloe has been more financially challenging than those of late due to WA’s local economic uncertainty and the discontinuation & renegotiation of some existing major sponsorships.

Going into our Centenary year, I also call out to our forebearers for their commercial foresight & strong governance which has given the club its capital strength and continues to allow the Board of Management flexibility in our decision making than we otherwise might as a not-for-profit sports club.

This year’s financial loss however reminds us not to rest on our laurels but to be continually cognisant of the risks associated with our income streams and expenditures, particularly those associated with building ownership.

As a result we have recently re-invigorated and introduced sub-committees related to our sponsors and building related projects respectively and invite input from members who might wish to get involved in these areas.

Our members fees consistently contribute around ~60% of the clubs running costs with historically the remainder coming from rent from the Blue Duck together with the generosity of our members, donors and sponsors. In particular we are thankful to Tim Roberts as founding sponsor of our Surf Sports Academy for the last five years which is now well established.

Club Captain’s Report

It was a year of development and progress, not only in surf sports, but across all activity areas within the Club. The achievements and progress we made this season will also provide a great platform as we prepare for our Centenary celebration due to commence in October this year.

The competition area continues to go from strength to strength. The Club also had one of the largest state teams in many years... perhaps it was because the Aussies were in Perth, but I’d like to think that it was because of the hard work of our coaches, section captains and our Surf Sport Development Officer to create opportunities for our members. and was only possible because we had strong contributions across all surf sport sections.

Having the Aussies at home indeed created much excitement. From seasoned campaigners chasing the elusive gold medals to those who just wanted to have a go and be part of the experience, our competitors rallied and made our presence known at Scarborough. There were plenty of war stories, tales of triumph and capitulation to be told and retold.

Congratulations to Sophie Hogan who took out the gold medal in the U19 Female 2km Beach Run.

A special shout out to our masters athletes who not only successfully defended their position as the best Masters team in the state, but also showed their dominance at the Aussies, finishing 3rd overall, ahead of big named Clubs such as Northcliffe and North Bondi.

The Tim Roberts Surf Sport Academy also continues to grow. The Academy provides our youth with education and training in surf sport and leadership. We are starting to see the benefits of these programs at competitions with more white caps on the start line at junior and youth competitions this year. I thank Shannon MacLachlan for her energy and effort in getting this program off the ground. It was with sadness that we had to say goodbye to Shannon as she relocated to New Zealand and we owe her a great debt of gratitude for her work. We welcomed Brooke Ponchard to the NCSLSC family this season. Brooke, an Exercise Physiologist by profession, comes with extensive experience in sport development and will provide a unique perspective on the Academy program.

Another area that NCSLSC has made improvement in is our patrols. This year, our lifesavers ably and professionally carried out a number of rescues that resulted in lives being saved.

Annual Report 2018

Our lifesavers are well respected and highly regarded in the community for their capability and professionalism. I thank all patrolling members and the patrol captains for their effort and dedication in this area.

Community engagement remains an important part of our Club. One event that has become a “must do” on the open water swimming calendar is the Cold Water Classic. The event was developed to raise awareness and funds for the Leukaemia Foundation. With support from Euroz Charitable Foundation as the principal partner, the event reached another milestone in 2017.

This year we added two new events to the program: the Ocean Merchants SUP challenge and the North Cottesloe 2km Beach Run. These events allowed us to engage different segments of the community and we are confident that the number will grow to rival the open water swim event in the years to come. The event raised a total of $19,459.59 for the Leukaemia Foundation.

I will be stepping down from the position of Club Captain at the end of this season. My three years in this role has been a fantastic experience from both a personal growth and a Club development perspective. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for giving me the opportunity to serve in this role and for your support throughout my time as Club Captain.

See you on the beach!

Tim Roberts Surf Sports Academy

15

The 2017/18 season has seen the Tim Roberts Surf Sports Academy continue to develop under the support and management of Coaches, Subject Matter Experts and Volunteers. Twenty-four athletes were accepted into the Academy in the 2017/18 season, with nine girls and fifteen boys between the ages of thirteen and nineteen. These numbers expanded upon our previous season of thirteen athletes.

The Surf Sports Academy exists to provide a pathway and competition opportunities that enable individuals to reach their full potential. There is a key focus on providing community support within surf sports with the end goal of producing well-rounded resilient young athletes. This was demonstrated throughout the academy with Bella Poll and Georgia Gillibrand winning Junior Athlete of the Year and Junior Club Member of the year, respectively.

Swim training sessions with Bill Kirby, strength and conditioning classes, individualised exercise programs, fitness testing, physiotherapy screening and education were several opportunities provided within the Academy. Board, iron, sprint and ski training within the club was available to all athletes.

A high level of athlete improvement and competitiveness was evident throughout the Surf Sports Academy, as displayed through the State and National Titles. Special mentions to Bella Poll and Dominic Banks-Smith who took out individual gold medals at the State Championships for the U15 Surf Race and U17 Beach Sprint, respectively. Our U17 Mixed March Past took home a Bronze medal at the Aussies and last, but definitely not least – Lily Moore who received a bronze medal in the U14 50m Freestyle with Fins at the Australian Pool Rescue Championships!

The 2018/19 season is going to be exciting! I have recently stepped into the Surf Sports Development Officer position in March 2018 and I’m looking forward to managing the Academy moving forwards. I would like to thank Mr Tim Roberts for his contribution to the Surf Sports Academy and to the North Cottesloe Surf Life Saving Club as a whole.

It has been a busy and very successful year for the Club on the beach in the competition, training and patrol areas.

Keeping the Club premises (including The Blue Duck and Scout Hall) and equipment ready for use and in good shape to service those activities requires a lot of background effort from many members and employees of the Club. Rick and his team in the office continue to manage and administer the regular maintenance activities that keep the Club running and ready for use.

Some of the contractors used for maintenance works are either owned by Club members or have employees who are Club members. These relationships are important to the Club and we encourage members in businesses with building maintenance and services skills to make themselves known to Club administration.

The Trojans have had another successful year. General Factotum has continued to rally his motley crew to successfully attempt many tasks, using a range of equipment without fear of failure. It appears that prerequisite requirements to membership of this elite group are retirement, thick skin and a great sense of humour.

Judging by the General’s reports, skill in the use of any equipment at all is entirely optional. If you satisfy the above criteria and are keen to be involved I’m sure the General would be happy to hear from you.

During the season consideration and assessment of the potential benefits of installing solar panels at the club premises has been undertaken. A lot of work has been done in this area and there is still more to do. It is important that a thorough analysis is completed before any commitment is made. The Board will continue to review the financial and technical aspects to ensure the best outcome for the Club.

Winter as usual presents us with new leaks to trace and repair. A significant repair job was carried out recently to the waterproofing in the garden beds adjacent to the office. This has now resolved the issue of flooding to the offices which had resulted in damaged carpets, walls and skirtings. These can all now be repaired.

Key works to be scheduled over the next few years include:

• Re-roofing of the Club and The Blue Duck • Re-coating of the gym floor Rust treatment and repainting of exposed steelwork • General repainting • Solution to condensation through concrete slab from The Blue Duck to Gym

Closing thanks go to Rick and his fantastic team, The Trojans and the many members who have volunteered during the year to assist with the upkeep of the club premises.

EducationDomenic Cowdell

The Club has a great team of trainers and assessors and I would like to thank everyone who has contributed this season to helping with education.

We had another incredibly busy season with 261 new qualifications being awarded and 792 skills maintenance checks being completed for members. The education team has been fundamental in helping to grow the club by training and assessing 125 members in their bronze medallion and 24 members in their Surf Rescue Certificate this season. This is by far the most in the state and we count for some 18% of new bronze medallions in WA. We were also active in the training and qualification of further awards including IRBs, Silver Medallion Beach Management, Spinal Management, Advanced Resuscitation Certificate, Radio Certificate and Nipper Rescue Certificate.

We have an active mentoring program to ensure ongoing sustainability of the education team. This season we had three new trainers qualify and who did an outstanding job this season. In addition, four trainers gained their assessors award along with three members gaining new facilitator awards.

Club assessors are also very active at other surf life saving clubs running assessments, supporting and assisting other clubs.

The Club also has two members on the state advisory committee for members education and training and the SLSWA Training Consultant for the area is a member of the Club.

The following were nominated for Education and Training awards:

SLSWA Awards of Excellence Trainer of the Year – Winner Domenic Cowdell Youth Lifesaver of the Year – Nomination Julian Ming Assessor of the Year – Nomination Domenic Cowdell

North Cottesloe Awards of Excellence NC Trainer of the Year Winner: Sam Elias Nomination: Helen Alison Nomination: Steve Voke

NCSLSC Assessor of the Year Winner: Domenic Cowdell Nomination: Helen Alison Nomination: Jasmine Lamb

In addition to members training, the Education team also run activities for members of the public, school groups and students on water safety, first aid skills and beach activity days. The Club is also increasing the number and range of commercial first aid and water safety courses to generate additional income for the Club. We are looking forward to the biggest season yet and anyone wishing to become involved in the Education team should contact the office.

NCSLSC sets the standard in delivering lifesaving services in WA. In 2016/2017 we had a fantastic season culminating in the Club winning the SLSWA Birtwistle Trophy Patrol Club of the Year. In 2017/2018, we started off the season still focused on improving the way that we deliver lifesaving services to the community and building on our capacity to support events. Our efforts have been recognised as we were nominated for this award again, coming a close runner up.

There is a lot that goes on in the background to make sure that each weekend, our patrol teams are equipped and able to prevent incidents from occurring and to provide first aid and rescue those in need. A big shout out goes to the lifesaving leadership team who volunteer their time to make sure that we are rescue ready for each patrol.

(Life Saving Continued)

Pre-season - we started off by setting up the patrol room, Rachele was almost lost in a mountain of red shorts, yellow tops and orange water safety vests. Old tubes were tossed, flags were found and red bags were made ready.

Mid-September we held a pre-season event which saw a team of bronzies in their red and yellow caps and wetsuits providing water safety for the ICEA carnival. Despite the cold conditions, it was a great day for the competitors and the water safety team.

Winter lingered for the first months of the season with only the die-hards braving the waters. Patrol teams were kept busy checking patrol equipment, watching out for people in need of help, roving the beach and tidying up around the club.

In October, the weather gods shined down on us for the Cold Water Classic. This year competitors swam, ran and SUPed over the finish line all in support of the Leukaemia Foundation. We raised over $19,000 to support the Foundation.

November saw more people on patrols and less jumpers on as the weather warmed up a bit. We put a big focus on ensuring that all active members knew what their patrol hour obligations were and giving everyone the opportunity to do their hours.

More patrol spots were opened up towards the end of December and again at the end of the season in April. There was a great response from our active members all stepping up to do their hours. For the first time in many years (or possibly ever), the New Years Eve 1pm – 4pm patrol had a waiting list.

There were some that went above and beyond and did more patrol hours and filled in where there were gaps. A big round of applause to runners up Steve Voke and Jasmine Lamb and our Patrol Member of the year, Mark (Ando) Anderson for completing 76 patrol hours over the season. The patrol member award isn’t just about hours completed but also about upholding the values of the Club, surf life saving and generously giving time and energy to keeping the beach safe.

In December, the Club hosted and provided water safety for the Surf League R1 & Surf Rowers competition. Again, the weather gods were on our side putting on a spectacular day.

Nippers started off in November colouring the beach in a flock of yellow water safety vests and in December the Club Champs attracted many competitors which required our patrolling members out in force.

Annual Report 2018

January saw the weather warming up, more bronzies out on patrol and more events to support. Our IRB team extended their patrol and helped our neighbours to the south providing water safety for the Cott Classic Mile. We also saw a team of bronzies get up bright and early to provide water safety for the Rockingham Triathlon. It put their skills to the test as people of all ages and all abilities entered the race.

In late January, the club hosted the Sunsmart Coastal Relay with another team of bronzies on the water and in the first aid tent. For Australia Day, our IRB team braved the rough conditions in Geraldton and provided water safety for the Country Carnival. Nothing will hold our IRB Captain Nathan down, even after being thrown out of the IRB with an anchor landing on him.

February was a big month in terms of patrols and water safety. Our bronzies, IRB and jet ski teams supported the Swanbourne Classic, Champion Lakes Tri, Nipper Qualifier (at Trigg), Rotto Swim and Cotto Swim where we also had skis on patrol.

In March, we stepped up again and were out on the water providing water safety for a record number of events during one month: Christ Church / MLC Ocean Swim, States for Masters, Champion Lakes Tri (2 days), State Belt Race Championships, Rockingham Tri, Sunsmart Senior Series Round 1, States for Nippers, Splash n Dash and States for Seniors.

In April, it was Aussie, Aussie, Aussie with Scarborough hosting the Aussies. The Club provided equipment to our friends from the east who weren’t able to pack an IRB in their hand luggage. We were out on the water providing water safety each day of the Aussies with a big round of applause to Jasmine Lamb who was on every patrol.

Jasmine went on to win the NCSLSCs Life Saver of the Year.

During the season, we spent some time organising the lifesaving equipment in the boat shed so that it is easier to access and handle. We were able to donate some equipment including uniforms and tubes to the Shenzhen Dapeng Coastal Safety Improvement Centre in China. An IRB hull also migrated north to Exmouth to help out their surf life saving club.

Despite a few hiccups, our patrol captains all stepped up and used the shiny new computer in the patrol room and the new SLSA patrol app. The patrol app allows us to record real time data and information about the beach and these statistics are available in this Annual Report.

Under the careful guidance of Mary-Anne Paton (MAP), 18 new Patrol Captains will be on our beach next season after completing the SMBM award this season. Chances are that if you were at the beach this summer, you would have seen Campbell Shaw at the top of the ramp with his patrol cap on and zinc on his nose. Campbell completed an impressive 61.75 of patrol hours culminating in receiving the Clubs Patrol Captain of the Year award.

One of the significant achievements of the season was the saving of Tom Jenkins. The team who responded to this life threatening emergency are to be commended on their efforts. We were thrilled to learn that Tom recovered and was able to return to the beach to thank some of the people who saved him.

Looking ahead to next season, we will celebrate providing lifesaving services to the community for 100 years which is a milestone that only two other WA Clubs have achieved. I look forward to seeing all our returning members join in our Centenary celebrations.

The 2017/18 season had a strong start with 450 Nipper and 200 Cadet registrations at the Club. Most impressively we had many of our Cadets volunteer to assist with the delivery of the Nipper Program as Cadet AGMs. Our Cadet AGMs, through their patience and enthusiasm are invaluable in the experience they provide to our Nippers.

The structure of our junior program continues to evolve. Each year we strive to adjust and improve so that our juniors receive the very best of guidance, support, education and skill improvement.

We continued to offer training opportunities during the year and a big thank you to Bill Kirby, Martin Gallagher and John Gallagher for their assistance with these initiatives. We hope to continue to build upon these training opportunities each year with the assistance of our new Surf Sports Development Officer, Brooke Ponchard.

A notable change this season was the creation of Little Nipper Competitions which culminated in a Little Nipper State Championships. These Competitions were well attended by our U8 and U9 kids and provided a positive introductory experience to surf carnivals for our younger members.

Notable achievements from the Little Nipper State Championships were Sam Reynolds, silver in the U8 Swim Race, and Skye McCaffrey, silver in the U8 Board Race. Congratulations go to all our U8 and U9 kids who participated in these competitions.

The junior section is one of the larger areas of the Club and it requires a vast number of volunteers to contribute their time and effort each week to ensure that our juniors are well catered for. I would like to thank all those who made such a huge contribution.

A big thank you to all our parent Age Group Managers (AGMs) and Junior AGMs as well as to Michael Silbert for his assistance in coordinating our Cadet Program. These parents and members contributed a vast number of voluntary hours above and beyond the call of duty. Also, a special thank you to Kirsty Hayden who coordinated our competitors at each carnival, a huge task in its own right.

Thanks also to Hugh McCaffrey, Phil Curtis, Leonie Neervoort and Sandy Harvey for all their assistance with coordinating competition entries, tents and competitors. Thanks also needs to go to Mark Anderson who took on Nipper Water Safety Officer each Sunday and ensured that the beach was a safe place for our junior members.

Without people of this calibre the club would not be able to deliver the nipper and junior programs and I thank you all.

Following on from our Nipper team was our Cadet team. I would like to thank all our Section Captains and their respective members who volunteered numerous hours on a Sunday to help us deliver an impressive Cadet Program. Testament to this was our U17 Mixed March Past Team who won a bronze Australian Medal and benefited from the expert tuition of Jenny Ford.

I also thank the efforts from parents of the children. Many of you not only contributed time during your child’s session to assist the AGMs with each Sundays activities but also extra time in help with functions, BBQs, set up and pack up, assistance at carnivals and all other areas of the Club to help make the program such a success.

We had some excellent results from our carnivals over the season culminating in many medals at the State Championships.

I would like to make special mention of both Megan McCaffrey in winning the U12 SLSWA Age Group Award at States for the third year running as well as Joshua Neervoort for winning the Smith-Gander Trophy for most competition points accumulated during the season. An amazing effort by both these young competitors.

A successful club builds it long history on the participation of people and of vital importance to juniors is sponsorship to enable us to deliver the programs we do. We are thankful to all those who contributed.

I am certain that next season will be even better than the last and I urge you to consider taking on a role, to help the Club that we love so much, continue to provide such great things to all our members and the general community.

See you on the beach.

It has been a great year to take on the role as Chair of Surf Sports at the Club, with the Aussies at Scarborough and the Club continuing to develop and encourage competitors and the number and breadth of successes across various surf sports.

As you all know the competition season starts in the winter with the pool rescue and surfing. In both these disciplines the competitors set us up well for the season by winning points for the Club that contributed to the great season we had.

Early in the summer part of the season I was disappointed to understand that we were losing our Surf Sports Development Officer (SSDO) Shannon MacLachlan. After two years in the role, Shannon decided to move her family back to New Zealand. Shannon had done a great job getting our Surf Sports Academy underway and I quickly realised replacing Shannon was not going to be easy.

However late in the season we managed to recruit Brooke Ponchard into the role who had a busy start with a steep learning curve straight into the States and then soon after the Aussies in Perth.

On behalf of all Club members I would like to acknowledge and thank Shannon for the work she did in the SSDO role and I look forward to working with Brooke as she expands her knowledge of the Club and surf sports.

During this period of recruiting for the SSDO role, Sue Collins our Swim Captain stepped forward and offered her considerable surf sports experience to help close the gap Shannon had left. Sue took on a new role of Competition Captain and coordinated competition entries, our team-based competitions at senior carnivals and the two remaining surf league events.

Sue’s contribution through this season has been outstanding and she has been key to the significant increase in competitor numbers in our States and Aussies competitions and more so the increase in competition points we amassed to take out third place at the states behind Trigg and Sorrento.

This season we saw the return of a team-based inter club competition in the Surf League run by SLSWA. The first event was held in December and the Club had three teams competing with an awesome win by the A team and credible 6th and 7th by the B and C teams. We unfortunately didn’t do as well in the next two events however this was mostly due to key competitors being away with other commitments. These results demonstrate a good depth of competitors building in the Club across all disciplines.

In January the Interstate competition occurred at Moana South Australia with our very own Tom Nolan as Team Captain along with competitors Jesse Philips, Tegan Maffescioni and Dominic Banks-Smith making us proud competing for WA. WA managed a credible 3rd place behind the powerhouse States and our team members added significant value to the result.

The beach section also had a large contingent compete in late January at the Manly and Freshwater competition over that long weekend helping them prepare for the States and Aussies competitions coming up.

The Boaties also had a large contingent in the boaties State Team making up six of the eight crews in the team. Our Open Male, Open Female, U23 Male, U23 Female, U19 Female and Reserve Female crews all travelled and competed at Eloura Beach in NSW in big surf, with the U23 Female crew winning their competition and Open Female crew finishing fourth for WA.

Over the same weekend as the Interstate competition was the ASRL competition where the crews competed this time for the Club, again in big surf and great competition. Our Reserve Female crew finished second.

We held the Club Champs in February. Finding a slot in a very busy calendar can be difficult however holding this event is critical to our Club culture and needs to be prioritised.

It was a great morning and a big thanks to those who helped make it happen and Downsey for coordinating the water competition on the day.

Congratulations to our Club Champions who were:

U14 Eloise Massey & Jack Reynolds U15 Bella Poll, Jaxon Hayden & Zaide Moxham U17 Eve Strong & Eamon Walker Open Asa Nowell & Dan Peters Masters Miriam Salter & Tom Schilperoort

The Masters States was again a successful campaign for us. Led by John Lishman, our Masters Captain, we were once again crowned Masters State Champions. There are far too many results to list here! A number of people came away with multiple medals and a huge number of people contributed to the win for the Club by earning points. Well done all!! There is some great comradery in this group and a big thanks to those who supported Lisho and ran the various sections on the day.

At the Senior State Championships we had 213 competitors entered for competition with some outstanding results which can be read in detail in the results section. Achieving third place at the States is not only a huge indication of where we have managed to get to as a Club, but as an indication of the opportunities we need to seize over the next few years to one day become Champion Club. The major contributors to the points this season were the Boat, Ski and Beach sections.

There were some major growth areas this season with a significant increase in female competitor numbers and point scorers, mostly in the ski section, swim, board and team events. We really need to acknowledge the Ski sections growth this season and specifically the female competitors that have come to the Club to join this section. The ski section has developed a great culture of comradery and competitiveness and the Club to be at for Ski’s.

This season the Club also won the Lifesaver relay, earned a second place in the Taplin relay and made significant headway in the various age groups in both male and female competitions through the season and at States.

These changes and growth in our points have come from major developments in how the Club develops and encourages involvement in surf sports stemming from section captains and coaching staff’s amazing efforts.

Moving into next season, we need to continue to share the learnings and continue to build this approach right across our surf sports sections with the aim to maintain a third place (or better) and take a strategic approach to competition to ensure our juniors and cadets have a strong pathway to senior competition.

Another great Aussies and to have them in in our home state was great for WA and the Club. With a huge contingent of 209 competitors entered we had some amazing results in the Masters and Open competitions with many individuals and teams just missing out on medals. The standouts were our U17 March past team winning a Bronze medal, our U23 men (Yeah the boys) winning silver and of course Sophie Hogan winning Gold in the U19 Female 2km run.

Please take the time to read detailed results in the full results tabled at the end of the report.

We also can’t achieve what we do without all those working behind the scenes and people like our officials and water safety people who turn up each competition and make our Surf Sports competition possible.

I would also like to thank Karie Liggins and the many Associate Members who provided a terrific States dinner and Fran Endersby and her team for the Aussies dinner for our competitors and officials.

This season the Section Captains, team leaders and our Club Captain worked to build a real team effort to coordinate the competition sections. I look forward to working with you all in future.

Congratulations to all members for another successful season for the Blue & White. The participation from so many members is what makes our Club the destination Club on the coast. Thousands of volunteer hours go unrecorded every year. Thank you to all members, especially those who volunteer above and beyond the minimum requirements.

To my fellow Board Members, thanks for your guidance, challenge and laughs. This was my final season as the Chair of Club Services. Since 2014, I’ve noticed the quality of dialogue about how to best build a great membership organisation mature significantly. Clarkey is continuing the path of those before him and building a formidable environment for our members to grow, have fun, enjoy our facilities and keep the beaches safe. Great leadership starts at the top.

My biggest shout out of this season goes to Claire Jordan, and Club Member of the year to boot! As part of building and evolving a Club Services sub-committee, Claire and I have been working closely on a Club Services succession plan. Thanks to Claire for her countless extra hours and making herself available for the eventful Monday night Board meetings!! Thanks to everyone else who has made my four seasons on the Board as enjoyable as they were.

Recently, Clarkey and I presented our Club of the Year credentials to SLSWA with a result of 2nd Club in the State WOOOOO!!!

Here are some of the interesting stats:

Our membership is very age and gender diverse: • Nippers 21% • Cadets 11% • Seniors 27% • Over 40’s 41% • 40% Female Membership

Beyond the beaches, our service hours create impact all along the coast: • Over 10,000 service hours logged, one of only two clubs to go over 10,000 hours for the season. • Provided water safety and support for 22 different events which included the Rotto Swim, Cotto Swim, Splash n’ Dash, Triathalon WA and the North Cott Euroz Cold Water Classic.

In addition, we are a Not-For-Profit that supports other NFPs and assisted in raising over $19,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation.

The Club is also starting to bring together different cross-sections from our membership with:

• 3x Mentoring programs • 1x Intern program

We look forward to these programs expanding over the coming years. Congratulations to all Club award nominees and eventual winners, your achievements are worthy of a photo on the pool room wall. And finally, the biggest congratulations goes to all patrolling members, Patrol Captains and everyone involved with keeping our beaches safe.

Make sure you get around the Centenary Season, it’s going to be huge.

To my fellow Board members, thanks for your guidance, challenge and laughs.

OfficialsJohn Barwood

2017-18 was a special year for local surf sports, with Perth hosting the 2018 Aussies at Scarborough and Trigg. Having the Aussies here is a great opportunity for local officials to gain national experience, and our Club officials took full advantage of this opportunity.

Congratulations to Jane & Miles Ponsonby, Jasmine Lamb, Nathan Fitzgerald, and Delia Bullock who all officiated at the Aussies for the first time - a great achievement. They joined the Club’s experienced Aussies hands of Deb O’Mahony, Liz & Ray Maffescioni, Ash Dry and John Barwood. Our total contingent of 10 Aussies officials was amongst the largest of any Perth club. Thank you all.

On the local scene it was another busy surf year, with further changes in the competition format. Again Club officials covered all disciplines: IRB’s, Pool Rescue, Surf Boats, March Past, Beach and Water. Thank you to everyone for your commitment, and for helping to make WA surf sports competitions among the best run in the land and for contributing to the Clubs high standing in the WA surf sports fraternity.

Aside from our wonderful representation at the Aussies we had several other achievements of officials throughout the 2017/18 season.

• John Barwood was 1 of 4 Australian officials invited to attend the 2017 International Surf Rescue Challenge held at Mount Maunganui, NZ at the end of November. The ISRC is a national teams competition for Water and Beach events, with 8 nations competing in 2017.

• John was also the only WA official at the 2018 Interstate Championships held at Moana Beach South of Adelaide in January (where the max temp was 43 deg on the day of the competition!) • During the year we were thrilled to welcome Delia Bullock back to the hallowed ranks. Despite her 3 year “sabbatical” Delia slotted straight back into the beach arena where her experience was valuable. Nice to have you back, Delia! • Congratulations to Jane Ponsonby who was (again) the Club Official of the Year for 2017/18.

With a completely new surf sports team in SLSWA, we can expect continued change to our local sports programs for the upcoming season.

The 2018 Lifesaving World Championships will be held at Glenelg in Adelaide in November. Liz & Ray Maffescioni, Ash Dry and John Barwood have all been appointed, and we look forward to joining a strong team of Club competitors at this high profile event.

The 2017/18 season flowed straight on from the end of the 2016/17 season. After being awarded Coach of the Year, Lockie Cooke departed for his career on the East Coast, leaving big shoes to fill for myself and David Kordic as Co-Captains for the season ahead.

We soon realised all good things happen with a multitude of people contributing and so our leadership team, the dream team, was formed with Claire Jordan.

Shannon MacLachlan provided us with a strength program to utilise in the gym for the off season and we kept the vibes rolling by participating in distances slightly longer than our usual 2km run, by entering in the HBF Run for a Reason, Perth Marathon, Perth Trail Series and City to Surf. Training shifted from the sand onto grassed ovals, pavement and the hilly streets and the variety helped boost our winter training numbers despite the cold, dark and sometimes wet mornings. We gained new participants to the squad, notably boatie Tim Gregg and ultra-marathon man Greg Hogan brought his daughters Sophie and Monica, and they quickly became addicted.

The inaugural Fluro Fun Run held in August was a huge success. We saw involvement from other sections and it was a great way to get the whole club involved in our love of running. A fantastic collaboration of skill sets from event logistics, negotiating local council contracts, catering, digital design, coordinating sponsorship from local businesses and on-the-day volunteers enabled the event to not only be fun but also fundraise for the Club. The Run consisted of either 1x 5km loop from the Club out to Allen Park and back, or a 10km distance made up of two loops.

2km Beach Run Fran Endersby

The 5km winners were Tom Shenton (sprinter) and Matilda Morfesse while the 10km winners were Michael Kingsbury (swimmer) and Emma Fitt.

The Cold Water Classic, held on Sunday 22nd October, incorporated a 2km beach run and SUP race into the swimming event for the first time. The 2km beach run was won by our U15 star, Jaxon Hayden with Zac Bowles close behind in 2nd. Paddy Hazard was crowned Cold Water Classic Legend for having the fastest time overall for all three legs (swim, SUP, run).

The SunSmart season finally kicked off with the Endurance Championships at Trigg on 11th November and we got some points on the board for 4km Beach Run. Bec Griffin came 2nd in the Open Female race and Paddy Hazard and Joel Cummuskey came 2nd and 4th respectively in the Open Male race.

We saw a fantastic white cap turnout at the first Senior carnival at Leighton Beach and this trend continued at subsequent carnivals where the start line was consistently filled with white caps. This was a great sight for morale and handy for collecting Club points. Our first official team merch also arrived at the start of the season. PROmotion physiotherapy assisted as sponsors to kit us out in matching ‘2km Turbo’ training and race singlets.

The Country Carnival was held in Geraldton across the Australia Day weekend. Despite the sandstorm, Jaxon Hayden came away with 1st place for the U15 2km Beach Run.

Annual Report 2018

The WA State Championships were held at Scarborough Beach on the fluffiest of sand, thankfully the soft, grainy sand of North Cott had somewhat prepared our quads and calves for this. We were very proud to see 35 white caps on the start line. We had strong performances from the Open Females; 3rd Bec Griffin, 5th Mathilda Lipscombe and 6th Olivia Marsh, and Monica Hogan came 5th in the U17 race. Sophie Hogan, who barely missed a carnival or training session, proved that consistency is key and ran like the wind taking 1st place in the U19 female race. Jaxon Hayden came 4th and Ben Clarke 6th, in a very competitive U15 male field and Zac Bowles placed 4th in the U19 male race.

The Aussies championships was hosted at Scarborough Beach which was a great opportunity for our 2km squad to suss out the Eastern State competitors. We had 19 competitors in the youth and open races. The course was challenging, soft sand the whole way, with no relief of going onto the hard sand.

So the key was keeping close to someone in front and using their footsteps. Bec Griffin and Zac Bowles backed up their States performances with 4th place in their respective Open female and U19 male races. We were absolutely delighted to cheer Sophie Hogan on as she charged well ahead of her competitors to confidently win the U19 female race, which also happened to be the only gold medal for the Club at the 2018 Aussies. She was unable to celebrate over hot coffee with the team as she sprinted off to an exam scheduled later that morning!

The annual awards dinner held in May rounded out what felt like a never-ending season and it finished with an absolute bang. We were so proud to see two of our 2km Turbos up on stage accepting their very well-deserved awards; Athlete of the Year was Sophie Hogan and Club Member of the Year was Claire Jordan.

Team work makes the dream work! Bring on the Centenary Year.

(Captain) selected as Open competitors and Dominic Banks-Smith selected in the youth category. Mixing with the best in the country, we helped propel WA to a clear 3rd, Tegan came away with a 3rd in the Sprint and 2nd in the Flags, and I came back with a 2nd in the Flags.

Shortly after the interstate, over the Australia Day long weekend, we had our largest contingent in many years head over to Sydney for the Manly and Freshwater carnivals. The touring team was skewed with youth and we managed fantastic results from what is a traditionally competitive weekend.

At Freshwater, some of the more notable results was the Club taking out the Open female (Tegan Maffescioni), Open male (myself), U19 male Sprint (Matt Lloyd), Open male Flags (myself) and the U19 male Flags (Matt Lloyd).

On top of taking out the Open men”s Relay with Matt Lloyd, Tom Shenton, Josh Hartley and myself, Jess and Georgia Gillibrand also managed places in both their Sprints and Flags in their respective age groups.

We had a longer than usual wait to commence racing with the first carnival not until November, so after a lengthy winter of long runs, tyre pulls and sand hills we hit the re-designed competition program with enthusiasm. From the first carnival through the remainder of the season we had a large presence at carnivals that obtained regular solid results stamping the Club firmly as a top club on the beach.

With the addition of the Surf League this season we had increased racing opportunities and a great platform to embrace the “One Club” philosophy. With a team racing format that is usually not experienced outside of representative teams we had an opportunity for our section to perform very strongly for the Club. This new format also provided fantastic exposure for some of our younger and developing athletes.

Strong results from the carnivals and Surf League saw several athletes travel interstate to race for Club and state.

We had three athletes chosen to pull on the black and gold in WA State team that competed at Moana, South Australia, in January with Tegan Maffesconi and myself

This season again saw an increase in our squad with a bunch of fresh faces adding to the ranks and continuing the beach sections ongoing success.

Backing up the efforts at Manly the next day saw much stiffer competition though we still managed strong results; Tegan placed 3rd in the Open Sprint and 2nd in the Open Flags, with myself placing 3rd in the Open Sprint, 4th in the Open Flags along with Sam Burke who made the Flag final. Finals were made by Matt Lloyd in the U19”s, Jess Gillibrand in the U17s and Georgia Gillibrand in the U15’s which is a commendable effort for first timers at the Manly carnival.

Approaching the championship end of the season the squad grew (if only some of the people had surfaced earlier in the season and got more training in!) as we sharpened our skills and refined our teams.

At the State Titles we fielded relay sides in every event apart from U14 males, with almost all age groups having multiple sides, and came away with a bunch of medals – winning the U15, U17 and U19 male races and the U17 females. Our athletes also finished 2nd, 3rd and 6th in the Open Males, and 3rd in the U15 females. This is a great measure for the squad and the strong results in the underage groups is hopefully a sign of future North Cott dominance!

Individual results of note among a long list, was Dominic Banks-Smith taking out the U17s male Sprint, Tegan Maffescioni taking out silver in both the Open Sprints and Flags, with Anna Speirs cracking both finals on limited preparation as well. Todd Edwards showed the young ones how it is done again with a 5th in the Open Flags, with myself 3rd.

Again promising results in the younger age groups saw Lily Mather come home with a silver in the U14 female Sprint, our U15 males coming home with 3rd– Zaide Moxham, 4th– Jaxon Hayden, and 6th– Lachlan Frankel in the Sprint and Georgia Gillibrand 5th in the U15 female flags. Matt Lloyd took out 3rd in both the U19 Sprint and Flags, followed by Brayden Frankel with a 4th and 6th.

Moving onto Aussies, we took advantage of the Aussies taking place up the road to field our largest contingent in many years. The U15s lead the way at the youth championships with both the male and female sides making their respective finals. Individually Kate Silipo and Georgia Gillibrand progressed to Semi-Finals in the U15 Flags and Lachlan Frankel making a Semi-Final in his U15 Sprint and just missing out on the Final.

In the senior competition both the male and female Open Relay sides made finals, with the Open coming in 6th, and the Open women going one better finishing 5th. The U17 females also ran fantastically to make their final. Matt Lloyd progressed through the largest and strongest U19 field in memory to make the Sprint final finishing 6th, and he was joined in the sprint finals by Tegan Maffescioni who also made the Open Women’s final.

We may not have won a medal at this year’s Aussies but had a great team, with hearty efforts shown on home sand which all can be proud of.

With the 2017-18 season now behind us, we look to once again continue to grow the squad and improve our running to be the best team on the coast. We have a wonderful group of cadets coming through, combining with the wiser, established heads which makes the squad a great place to be part of and a rewarding environment.

I am lucky enough to have a gang of helpers to assist keeping the veneer of control and organisation going over the many moving parts of the section, with a great deal of thanks owed to many. Special mention to Sous-Coach Tom Shenton, Lucy Chaffer for helping with the juniors, Sonja Belle-Wood for taking the juniors and adding a weekend sand session to impart her knowledge. Mark Nolan for providing advice, technical assistance and being the best team manager on the beach. Toddy Edwards for flags and relay guidance and tips and for all those who assisted with our fundraisers, team dinners, and helping come down to coach cadets and nippers....... it’s an all hands in operation.

Bring on next season!

The IRB section has the privilege of being involved with every area of the Club; from competition to education and life saving. This broad scope allows those who hold IRB qualifications to get a range of experience across all elements of Surf Life Saving.

A massive thank you to Kate Bonner who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure we had enough drivers and crew to fulfill our patrol, carnival patrol and special events coverage.

Our IRB crews provided fantastic coverage during many community events such as Cold Water Classic, Triathlons at Rockingham and Champion Lakes, Cottesloe - Swanbourne Ocean Classic, Rottnest Channel Swim, Cotto Swim and the Coastal Relay for SLSWA just to name a few.

To the team of people who have carried out water safety patrols at carnivals so that our fellow Club members can compete, I thank you. The Geraldton Country carnival this year was particularly memorable for yours truly. The Club was well represented at Aussies 2018 with regard to judging duties and water safety commitments. A debt of gratitude is owed to Jasmine Lamb who was at Aussies for the duration, ensuring we were shining stars.

We’ve had a great season education wise, with one crew course, which was well attended with 15 new crew members, and a drivers’ course scheduled for later in 2018. The IRB racing this season did not happen due to logistics and training requirements, but we will endeavor to have the Club represented in the 2018/19 season.

For the upcoming season we look forward to further growth and the welcoming of new members to the IRB section, and to continually improve and involve all members of the IRB section. Thanks to the whole IRB team for your help and involvement throughout the season. I am looking forward to seeing you all back again next season.

The ski section had a fantastic 2017/18 season. For another year, the squad attracted new members adding much needed points to the Club tally at States.

The main contributor to both our growth and the points is the increase in the number of female competitors. It’s great to have so many more women in the squad and a credit to all these competitors who consistently make training and not shying away from what has been a bloke’s domain within the Club for some time. The validation of the women’s efforts can be seen in the points we attained at the State Championships.

A big thank you to the squad members that have made a significant contribution to our success this season:

• Sam Rowe– a massive coordinating effort for the Christmas Eve Eve Party which was a huge success at raising funds for the squad, but more importantly a massive amount of fun to be at. Get in quick for tickets next year!

• Mark Peters & Sue Collins– taking the afternoon training sessions during the week and helping out with marshalling at carnivals. A big thank you to Mark for his trailer towing skills. Sue, you were brilliant at team organisation.

• Jesse Phillips & Steve Bird – programming and coaching of the squad and the mentoring undertaken with the U17 Cadets. Jesse and Steve are greatly admired by these young competitors and it’s a credit to them that they have kept their interest throughout the season.

• Marian Taylor – For those unique yet brilliant gym sessions that are showing results for those of us that make a consistent appearance. Also, for letting those know that are NOT consistent.

For all the results from this outstanding season please refer to the results section of the report.

As for those thinking about joining the squad, don’t be shy but do be committed. It’s about representing the Club so if you are keen then put your hand up and come and find me.

Lastly (because the squad would expect it!) –”If you aren’t lifting you aren’t competing”

Well where do I start? What a year. We started off the pre-season with a new look women’s group which has become a very tight knit, fantastic bunch of ladies with drive and passion. There were many new and returning faces amongst the crowd, battling it out in the gym and on the water for a spot in a crew. We were able to blood some young ladies who will hopefully stick around for a few more years to come....it seems that some of us get the surf rowing bug and just become old “Kittens”.

It was great to see Stiffy take on the women this year, producing some great results and working with Jeff to form a very competitive couple of Open Women’s crews.

There was top racing throughout the year by all teams. Many of the boat carnivals were run with all crews in together then finals being split into A and B. It was good to see the winner’s glasses make a comeback, along with the cold beverage after the carnivals to announce winners and have a little friendly rivalry on land amongst the bowmen. Suffice to say, many of our rowers and sweeps now have a nice new set of beer mugs.

We like to think that we played a major part in the success of our Surf League campaign, winning major points for the Club on each round.

ASRL was our first big hit out with six of the eight teams travelling as state representatives coming from The Club. Honourable mentions here to the U23 Women winning the interstate race and the Reserve Women coming home with a silver medal.

State Titles again saw the boatshed dominate with both our U23 Men and Women taking out the top Open Men and Women slots on the podium, our boat relay winning gold with an incredible lead and our Reserve Women also winning their second year in a row.

The Aussies saw the mighty white caps again produce some great outcomes. Silver to the First Ladies in the 180’s Women’s race, semi-finals for Resolute, quarter-finals for 6Ft Stiffs and narrow misses for Boatmen. Finals time for both our 7Ft Jiffs and Yeah The Boys. Great races by both teams but unlucky with the final outcome.

Of note this year were our U23 men and women, talented young athletes and a great bunch of people all round. The U23 Women won the Club Team of the Year and the U23 Men were nominated for WA State Team of the Year. The future of our sport is looking good at the Club.

Fundraising was difficult for us this year and we were humbled by the way that the Club stood up for the team when a simple, well intentioned carwash became a point on the evening news, causing waves with the local community.

Many thanks to our dedicated Boat Sponsors for their involvement this season.

Annual Report 2018

Goals for us as a section for the upcoming season include getting a regular U19 Men and Women’s crew (already underway and going great), getting a committed Open Men’s crew.

We are going to try and remain integrated as much as possible into the Club and are loving the “One Club” mentality.

We are very lucky with the calibre of sweeps that we have at the Club. They turn up tirelessly to train us, fix equipment and move gear all for little in return. Without these guys, we would not be in as good a position as we are. I would like to see more mentoring and sweep training this up-coming season.

If there are any new rowers wanting to have a go, please get in contact with me so we can get you on the water in the offseason to teach you what you need. Any seasoned rowers new to our Club, we look forward to hearing from you and seeing you around the shed this season.

We would like to thank our families and friends that sit on the beach for hours each carnival, only to watch us each race about 25mins a day. We would also like to thank our wonderful officials who spend hours each weekend, trudging hundreds of kilometres each season on the soft sand, only to make our day easy. Miles, Jane and Deb, you guys are the best.

We have also been very grateful to our new and ongoing sponsors; your support allows us to continue as the premier boat club in the state.

Training started back in winter 2017 with cool conditions not deterring any of the keen paddlers. Outstanding attendance to training through last winter showed in strong performances in the first competitions of the season in both the junior and senior competitions.

As the warmer summer climate returned, attendance continued to grow as we approached the Christmas break. In the new year, as predicted, numbers were low as some competitors ventured away on holidays. Leading up to States, solid attendance at training resumed.

Masters States was noticeably a fantastic showing of the board talent that has come through the Club over the years. It’s truly inspirational seeing all these incredible athletes still dominating.

BoardJoe Anderson

The 2017/18 season was another exciting year in the board squad in both the junior and senior divisions.

Senior States was an incredible two days of solid competition, particularly on the last day with cyclone swells smashing the coast with well double overhead waves which made it a great spectator day as well. It was the most exciting day of competition I have been a part of as a competitor at the Club and I’m sure many people would feel the same.

Aussies this year was held at Scarborough Beach and for most of the senior squad it was their first time competing on the national stage in their home city which was a great experience. The talent from over east still proved that they are the ones to beat in the sport when it comes to board paddling.

Overall this season proved to be a tough yet great season for everyone! Many thanks must go to the office team, Sue Collins, Nat Benjanuvatra, James Triplett, John and Martin Gallagher for their support through the season.

Winter training has already commenced for the squad with 15+ squad members already battling the cold which is great to see. I can already sense that the 2018/19 season will be a great season for the Board Section with new fundraising ideas, a new season of competition and a new training program.

See you on the water!

March PastJenny Ford

Our season aim for March Past was to have four teams on the beach at the Aussies. This aim was achieved and the sea of blue and white across the beach was fantastic. The U17 team taking out an Australian Bronze medal was a highlight for the entire Club. During States, the blue and white was prolific, marching five teams across Scarborough beach. We had several past marchers returning to compete and also many new marchers from senior age groups who are keen to learn the skill.

Whole club training was Thursday mornings at 6.30am from mid-January until Aussies. This was well attended by the Opens and some U23s. The U13s and U17s trained Sunday mornings for four weeks prior to States.

We purchased two new club flags and three new poles. For reels we managed the same as last year – using our two R & R reels and two lightweight demonstration reels.

This seasons fundraising was the catering for at the Surf League hosted by the Club in December and we also assisted throughout the season at a number of Club functions. Thank you to all those involved.

Our success in March Past this year would not have been possible without really enthusiastic helpers. A huge thankyou to Bob Hunter who coached the Open Squad for the second year in a row and we had some fabulous help from Ray & Liz Maffescioni before the State Championships. Chris Shellabear was always ready to help when needed with the Open squad and Cliff Ford with equipment. The Open White Team was managed and coached by Karie Liggins and Brian Sierakowski.

Many thanks to Sandy Harvey, Kirsty Hayden, Mike Silbert, Melissa Fitzgerald and Sue Collins who provided fabulous support with managing the U13s, U17s and U23s.

1. Summary of Significant Accounting Policies

The financial statements are a special purpose financial report, prepared for the purpose of fulfilling the Board of Management’s accountability requirements under the Club’s Constitution and the Associations Incorporation Act 2015 (WA). The Board of Management has determined that the Club is not a reporting entity.

The financial statements have been prepared on the basis of accrual accounting and are based on historical costs and do not take into account changing money values or except where stated specifically, current valuations of non-current assets.

The following significant accounting policies, which are consistent with the previous period, have been adopted in the preparation of these financial statements.

a) Buildings, Plant and Equipment - Equipment purchased in the 17/18 financial year is expensed as paid with the exception of capital items over $3,000 in value which are recorded on the asset register. Items of plant and equipment and buildings are depreciated over their estimated useful life using the straight-line depreciation method.

b) Club Development Fund - The Board of Management has established a Club Development Fund where donations intended specifically for surf sports development programs and equipment are held until required.

c) Leases - The main clubhouse building (being Lot 364) is located on Crown Reserve Land through a Head Lease between NCSLSC and the Minister for Lands. This lease was signed in December 1991 for a 50-year term. The ski shed building (being Reserve Numbers 13713 and 28199 within Lot 365) is located on Crown Reserve Land vested in the Town of Cottesloe. NCSLSC has a lease with the Town of Cottesloe signed on 26 August 1996 for a 21-year term.

d) Revenue - Revenue is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable after taking into account any trade discounts and volume rebates allowed. For this purpose, deferred consideration is not discounted to present values when recognising revenue.

Grant and donation income is recognised when the entity obtains control over funds, which is generally at the time of receipt.

e) Inventory - Inventories are measured at cost or net realisable value. Cost is based on a first-in, first-out basis.

f) Employee Entitlements - Provision is made for the entity’s liability for employee’s benefits arising from services rendered by employees to balance sheet date. Employee benefits that are expected to be settled within one year have been measured at the amounts expected to be paid when the liability is settled, plus related on-costs. Employee benefits payable later than one year have been measured at the present value of the estimated future cash outflows to be made for those benefits.

g) Income Tax - the entity is an income tax exempt charitable entity under sub-division 50-B of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997.

h) GST - Revenues, expenses and assets are recognised net of the amount of GST, except where the amount of GST incurred is not recoverable from the Tax Office. In these circumstances, the GST is recognised as part of the cost of acquisition of the asset or as part of an item of the expense. Receivables and payables in the assets and liabilities statement are shown inclusive of the GST.
