Charity Week for Orphans and Needy Children is a volunteer-led campaign of Islamic Relief.
The ultimate vision of Charity Week is to become a vehicle to inspire Muslim youth to become active, socially engaged and united upon Islam.
Assalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu...
... and welcome to our Annual Report for 2017. It was always going to be difficult this year to consolidate the huge achievements of 2016 and achieve the same buzz. At the same time we were faced with trying to make this entirely volunteer-led project into an example of sustainable growth. The whole Islamic Relief family has provided significant guidance and support in helping us take steps in the right direction.
This year Charity Week took place in six countries; UK, Canada, Germany, Qatar, USA and Australia. It’s been a truly inspiring journey to bring teams from across the world - bridging language barriers and cultural differences - and discover that what unites us is stronger than what divides us. It is this slow but rewarding process that gave us our inspiration to choose Building Better Together as our theme this year.
We are proud of what we are building here at Charity Week and we want the foundations to be strong. We want each volunteer to be a brick in our structure - to be supported and to support those who come after them. And from this to rise a structure that not only supports itself but can support children across the world who need our help.
With special thanks to the unknown bucketer, hard-working event planner, the person who gave up time with friends and family to make this project work. You are all heroes - the foundation stones that hold this building up.

5 Charity Week Annual Report 2017
“ASSEMBLE 1”Delivered by the International Team, the
aim of Assemble 1 is to bring together the
National and Regional teams of each country
and have them motivated through inspiring
talks, workshops and meeting each other.
“Knolling” is now a word well known to
many Charity Week team members and the
connection between Lego, the battle of Uhud
and Charity Week is an important lesson.
“ASSEMBLE 2”Assemble 2 is aimed at the institutions and
cities taking part in Charity Week. This is
delivered by the National and Regional
Teams. It was amazing to see the same talks
delivered at Assemble 1 being delivered at
Assemble 2, but by different people. This is
the beauty of Charity Week - one idea, many
voices. We hope the institutions left feeling
inspired, motivated and educated.
It is difficult to recruit, maintain and motivate a team spread across the world. Training has been and remains an area that requires more dedication and improvement in Charity Week. We hope to continue and diversify broadcasting our training programme to achieve better results in the coming year.

Figures reflect new resources purchased to deliver Charity Week 2017 and do not include existing resources that were successfully returned for re-use from the previous year.*USA purchased buckets locally, Qatar, Germany, Canada and Australia had buckets delivered from the UK as these countries do not sell charity buckets.**Paper pennyboxes were only offered in the UK.
RESOURCE DISTRIBUTION
This year we rolled out a new system by which institutions were categorised according to size in order to streamline resource orders. We are constantly working to reduce excess.

7 Charity Week Annual Report 2017
UKA man from France was seconded to
London for work. Bored and alone, he
searched for any Islamic event happening
at that time in London on Facebook.
Spotting the London Annual Dinner
he decided to turn up in person. After
seeing the Annual Dinner, he was now
considering moving his family to London
because he wanted his children to grow
up in this atmosphere.
AustraliaWeeks before Charity Week was due to
start, one of the universities taking part
pulled out. For a moment, everything was
up in the air. Finally, a brother and sister
stepped up. Even if it was just them, they
would make sure Charity Week happened.
Their conviction gave others strength
and the show went on. As long as even
one person believes in the vision, there is
always hope.
SHORT STORIES FROM CHARITY WEEK ACROSS THE GLOBE
GermanyA sister from Germany who was
organising a regional event was
approached by a stranger. She soon learnt
he was her own uncle. He happened to be
in the same town on that day and came
to this event not realising that it would
reunite him with the niece he had never
met.
Unity on a community level leads to unity
at a family level - and vice versa.
USAJust weeks before Charity Week, Texas
was hit by a devastating hurricane that
meant that some team members had
their houses flooded and were literally
homeless. Did that stop them having team
meetings or organising? No. If anything,
they said they were more dedicated
knowing that they would eventually be
fine, but the orphans and needy children
would not be without their help.
CanadaA large Islamic High School announced
just weeks before Charity Week that they
would no longer be able to offer places
to their high school students. This was
very distressing and these students were
scrambling for alternative schools. A new
Islamic school - Gibraltar Leadership
Academy - was set up by teachers from
the previous school and within weeks of
starting it, they signed up and took part in
Charity Week too!
QatarIn some institutions, it is hard to get the
students involved. In Qatar, they went one
step further and got the faculty involved.
Professors and lecturers planted trees,
cut cakes and took part in events. It was
dawah, appreciation and charity all mixed
into one!

EXPENDITURE
Every single penny that we get to run the project is money that belongs to the orphans and needy children. This budget is an amanah for us. It is our responsibility to ensure that this investment is a wise one that we return back many times over.

Charity Week Annual Report 20179
FacebookFacebook Live has been the surprise of the year as it allowed volunteers across the world to experience events taking place thousands of miles away; a promising development we can build on.
TwitterWe had fewer Twitter storms this year but engagement has increased thanks to strong leadership by our social media gurus. We are engaging more with associated accounts and the potential is there to go further (including aiming for the blue tick!).
YouTubeWe released some great videos on YouTube but the engagement has still been much lower than we would like. As there is only one YouTube channel for all of Charity Week, a new strategy is needed to make it more visible.
SnapchatSnapchat was the most popular online venue to experience Charity Week 2017, with the stories, ease of use and filters combining to blow away anyone who was lucky enough to watch.
InstagramCharity Week is full of so many amazing pictures and stories and Instagram holds hosts of potential for the future. We need to tap into more of our friends with filters!

Our motivation has never been about the money. It is been about working hard to bring people together. The projects that are funded are a demonstration of the rewards that are reaped by cooperation. The totals are not how we gauge our success, but show us what is possible. NB Due to significant fluctuations in exchange rates some mild
discrepancies in figures are inevitable. Wherever possible we have
underestimated or rounded down.

The process that we go through to fund projects is unique. The aim is to find the perfect balance between emergency projects and long-term. We also seek to set a balance between projects that are in the news and those that are equally deserving, but never make the headlines.
The result is a variety of projects with some focusing on healthcare, others on education and still others on providing food and water. The only way to achieve this ideal range of projects is through working together. We do not have to choose between one and another; we can help them all.

As a result, 100 hearing aids were fitted and 1,200 speech and hearing treatments were prescribed. Child Programmed in Somalia£31,423 GBP | $56,182 CAD | €35,809 EUR QR 160,155 QAR | $43,998 USD | $57,374 AUDToo often if a child in Somalia comes from a family that is too poor to pay for education, they are destined for child labour or worse. Funds from Charity Week have provided 300 school children with a free primary school education to last a year, allowing their families some hope where incomes are cripplingly low.

SYRIAOrphanage Support Inside Syria£20,679 GBP | $36,967 CAD | €23,557 EUR QR105,379 QAR | $28,950USD | $37,748 AUDThis intervention has ensured a continuous functioning of an orphanage located in Ihtimlat village, Azaz Northern Aleppo. Here, 476 orphaned children reside after having lost their parents. Funds have provided 570 food parcels, 570 hygiene kits, 70 beds and mattresses, more than 200 blankets and basic furniture that was lacking. Many of these children have been through devastating tragedy and their orphanage is the only home they have now.
EUROPESupport for Escaped Trafficked Children £77,555 GBP | $138,637 CAD | €88,358 EUR QR395,219 QAR | $108,577 USD | $141,571 AUDA sad reality of the world we live in is the exploitation of children when they are alone and vulnerable. This unique project provided specialist advice for such children who have managed to escape from traffickers. The project ensured that 81 youth all had suitable and appropriate accommodation. Separate counselling for girls and boys was provided to help them overcome traumas of the past.

ANNUAL DINNERS
Even though we plan Charity Week together, organise events together and spend the money together, we still get amazed at how cool it is for Charity Week teams to physically come together at the Annual Dinners. They are a chance to celebrate, reflect on our intentions and to renew them for the next year.

THE GREAT CHARITY WEEK BAKE OFF
Cakes and Charity Week go hand-in-hand each year - more
recently they have been going head-to-head. The winner and
runners-up for the Great Charity Week Bake Off were announced
after much anticipation at the International Annual Dinner.
THE INTERNATIONAL ANNUAL DINNER GLASGOW
This year the International Annual Dinner was in Glasgow, Scotland. The legendary hospitality of the Scots did not disappoint. Everything from Irn-Bru in glass bottles to Scottish shortbread was on hand to make us think twice about ever leaving. We were joined by guests from the US, Canada, Germany - and of course the surprise announcement of the South Africans. As one attendee put it, “I’ve never seen anything like this before.” Well, not for another year at least inshaAllah!

CONCLUSION
We hope that you take away from this Annual Report something that is more than just the big numbers, the interesting stories or statistics; it is a commitment that it is time to rebuild our ummah, brick by brick.
Abu Musa (Radhi-Allahu ‘anhu) reported Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) as saying:
A believer is like a brick for another believer, the one supporting the other.Sahih Muslim - Book 32: Hadith 6257
