DearFriends,

As I ponder the accomplishments made by the Physicians’ Care Clinic in 2016 –andtheliveswehavechangedforthebetter–Iwouldliketosharethreereasons why you should support our charitable clinic. This data was recently compiledbytheGeorgiaCharitableCareNetwork,ofwhichPCCisanactivemember,inastudyfundedbyHealthcareGeorgiaFoundation:

1)DirectSavings:Treatinghypertensivepatientsinacharitableclinic,suchasPCC,issignificantlymorecosteffective.Forthesamecare,FederallyQualifiedHealthCenterswerefoundtobealmosttwotimesasexpensive;Medicaidwastwo-and-a-halftimesmoreexpensive;andout-of-pocket/uninsuredcostswerefourtimesasexpensive.

2)Efficiency:ManagementofchronicdiseasepatientsinaGeorgiacharitableclinicreducestheneedfortreatmentofcoronaryhearteventsandstroke.Forevery$1spentbyclinics,thereisanaveragesavingsof$1.60.

3)CostAvoidance:Forevery100patientswhovisitaclinicannually,$50,000issavedinavoidedvisitstoahospital emergency room.

In2015Georgiacharitableclinicsprovidedintotalnearly500,000patientvisits,$82millioninprescriptions,$236millioninuncompensatedcare,andover$77millioninspecialtycarevisits.Clinicsalsoenabledmorethan326,178hoursofvolunteerservice.

Thosewhobenefitfromourcarearelargelyunemployed,uninsured,andlivingat100%ormorebelowthefederalpovertyline.Today,thismeansthatafamilyoffourismaking$24,300peryearorless.ThePhysicians’CareClinic,anideabornin1992byateamofDeKalbCountyphysicians,isinbusinesstostrengthenourpatientsand,intheprocess,ourcommunity.Itisanessentialservicetosomanywhowould otherwise go without healthcare.

Ourcliniccreatesteamsofvolunteers–wonderfulpeople,workingcollaboratively,usingtheirindividualskills.Volunteersarethelife-bloodofPCCastheysupportandempowercommunitychange.Theirworktouchesthemind,bodyandspiritofthosetheyserve!Itisalsoanopportunityforthemtogivebacksomeofthebountytheyhavebeengiventhroughtheirtalent,time,andfinancialdonations.Aswelookbackatourhistory,wealsolookforwardtoourfuture:2017isthe25th anniversary of the Physicians’CareClinic.WeanticipatemanymoreyearsofimprovingthelivesofunderservedDeKalbCountyadultsandprovidinganoutletforvolunteerteamwork.

stRAteGyIn2016,wefinishedanambitiousthree-yearstrategicplanthatfocusedonimprovinghealthaccessforDeKalb’suninsured,low-incomeadults,increasingvolunteerpartnerships,buildingcommunityawarenessabouttheneedsoftheuninsuredinourcounty,andbuildingahighperformingandstablehealthcenter. Asasmall,non-profitclinic,wehavetodecidewhatimpactwewanttohaveonourpatientsand,ultimately,ourcommunity.Ourfocusonpatienteducationasaroadmaptoimprovingthehealthofourhypertensiveanddiabeticpatientshasshownpromise,buthowcanweknowwe’vemadeadifference?

iMpActWhatwefoundisthatpatienteducationisthekeytoimprovingpatientoutcomes.Thankstoourdedicatededucators,patientsreceiveone-on-oneeducationandtheopportunitytoparticipateinmanyclassroomevents.Becausepatientsreturnmanytimesduringtheyear,theimpactofcontinuededucationcanbeseeninimprovingscores on our quality indicators.
