After 63 years of marriage and more than 50 years in the valley, Stu and Nina Crow continue to give back to the community.

Walking through their lovely home, one is quick to notice the portraits of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren that adorn their walls.

The couple’s rich history of love, commitment, and community support is evident – even when first meeting this amazing duo.

The Crows moved to Waynesboro in the early 70s and raised four daughters there. Stu joined the Board of Directors for the Waynesboro Community Hospital in January 1975 and served until December of 1984. After Augusta Health was constructed, he served on the board from 1997-2017 and was the chairman for five years.

Stu’s roots at Augusta Health run deep. Altogether, he boasts 19 years of continuous service. He has maintained a key leadership role in all of Augusta’s construction projects and campus development initiatives including the Heart and Vascular Center and the new Emergency Department. In addition, he led the Executive Committee’s CEO Search and personally oversaw the leadership transition process, attending each monthly board and every committee meeting for a full year. He is currently the chair of the Board’s Property and Facilities Committee and serves on the Governance Committee.

“I have worked closely with Augusta Health and the Foundation for years”, said Stu, “I can see

first-hand how important it is for us to have a community-owned health system and to have a successful Foundation as the philanthropic arm of the organization. Augusta Health and the Foundation do so much for this community. We are so lucky to have a hospital within minutes – not miles – from where we live and work.”

Nina added, “Our community hospital is so unique and special.”

In fact, during one of the Crows vacations, Nina fell and broke her knee. At the time, she did not know it was broken. Nonetheless, she told Stu that if she needed to go to the hospital, she wanted to go back home to HER hospital, Augusta Health. As it turns out, the knee was broken. While that was sad news, Nina was very happy to have been cared for by people that she knew, in the hospital she loves.

Stu and Nina have included the Augusta Health Foundation in their estate plan and have become members of the Cornerstone Legacy Society. Stu said there are a few organizations that are near and dear to their heart. That being said, the Crows are committed to supporting the Foundation now and in the future.

“Being a part of the Cornerstone Legacy Society, we can make sure that the health system continues to grow and meet the growing needs of our community” said Stu. He added, “I have been blessed with good health and a good career. We wanted to help those who need assistance.”

On a chilly Friday night in late October, the Augusta Health Foundation hosted its 2018 Signature Event “Rustic Roots” at the beautiful Sky Ridge Farm in Waynesboro. More than 100 donors and friends of the Foundation gathered to enjoy live music, tasty hors d’oeurves, libations, and good company, all in support of a growing community concern: diabetes.

Thanks to the generosity of sponsors, attendees, donors, and friends, more than $60,000 was raised. Proceeds from the 2018 annual event will expand inpatient and outpatient diabetes management, education, and programming. According to the most recent Community Health Needs Assessment, Diabetes was identified as one of the top three health needs in the Staunton-Augusta County-Waynesboro region.

Much of the success of the event was made possible by a committee of volunteers who helped with every detail. They include: Ashley Coffman, Kristen Brandt, Diane Fosnocht, Casey Just, Crystal O’Connor, Gloria Armentrout, Tami Radecke, Susannah Via, and other staff at the Augusta Health Foundation. Many of Augusta Health’s business partners and vendors supported the event with generous sponsorships.

Thank youto our sponsors!

An event to support and expand diabetes care and prevention programs for our community.

Rustic Roots attendees enjoyed catching up with friends and colleagues, while contributing to a good cause!

A new handheld ultrasound device – which is heralded to be the “stethoscope of tomorrow” – is in use now at the

newly-expanded Augusta Health Emergency Department, thanks to a grant from the Augusta Health Foundation.

Each year, the Foundation Board and its Grants Committee funds projects at Augusta Health using unrestricted gifts from the previous year. This year, the Foundation pumped more than $54,000 into innovative projects at Augusta Health.

Successful projects must have a positive impact on healthcare delivery in the community by:

• Improving the patient care experience;• Improving the quality of care provided; and/or• Decreasing the cost of care.

The new ultrasound device is currently in use and will help physicians diagnose certain conditions quickly and without radiation.

“We believe that, in time, the hand-held ultrasound device will become the new stethoscope for physicians,” said Adam Rochman, MD, Medical Director of Augusta Health’s Emergency Department. “It is fairly easy to use and provides us with high-quality images without radiation exposure to patients. This allows for a more rapid diagnosis.”

Rochman expects the most common use for the device will be to diagnose trauma patients at the bedside for life-threatening bleeding. This new technology will also be used to evaluate kidney stones, deep vein thrombois, pregnancy, and the gallbladder for cholecystitis. It will also allow for echocardiograms of the heart.

“We are so fortunate to have the Foundation to support this type of initiative,” said Rochman. “This is the second year that the Emergency Department staff has been the recipient of a grant and it has made such an impact on our patients.”

10 AUGUSTA HEALTH FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2017–2018

With a team of dedicated volunteers and Augusta Health leadership, the Moments Matter Campaign began. Jim Perkins, PhD, a member of the Augusta Health Foundation Board and retired President of Blue Ridge Community College, led the charge as Campaign Chair, and our community responded with an enthusiastic, “yes!” With 100% of the Augusta Health and Foundation Boards participating in the Campaign, joined by 100% of the Executive Team, countless physicians, employees, grateful patients, foundations and businesses, the Campaign’s Quiet Phase began in March 2017.

At this same time, construction of Phase One of the new Emergency Department project began. Over the next 17 months, this lifesaving, 17,000 square-foot facility began to take shape. It was completed in July 2018 and open to the community in August. But, not before generous donors were recognized for their support at a Celebration Event in the new space. The event provided an opportunity for supporters to see the large donor recognition wall and plaques throughout the new building.

“We are so happy with this new facility and the ways in which it will enhance patient care and privacy in the Emergency Department,” said Mary Mannix, President & CEO. “But now, the real work begins, as construction crews begin to dismantle and renovate the original Emergency Department structure over the next year.”

Have you ever thought about the value of a moment? A single moment? A second? A minute? Just a moment.

Think of it…the moment of impact when cars collide and – suddenly – lives hang in the balance. The moment the ambulance parks and the doors swing open at the Emergency Department doors, and the moment of truth when the physician explains the diagnosis.

Moments are but tiny intervals of time. However, they are substantial. And, taken altogether, they make up a lifetime.

This is why the Augusta Health Foundation chose, “Moments Matter,” as a theme for a campaign to gather community support for the Emergency Department expansion.

Built in 1994, the original Emergency Room was designed to serve 34,000 annually. In 2017, Augusta Health’s Emergency Department treated more than 60,000 patients. The need for the expansion and renovation was clear; Augusta Health patients were being seen and treated in cramped rooms and in tight spaces and corridors. In fact, 15-20% of patients received care in the Augusta Health Emergency Department in a “hallway bed.”

Augusta Health’s Board of Directors allocated $20 million for the $22 million project and asked the Augusta Health Foundation to secure $2 million in philanthropic support. This was the first-ever capital campaign for the five-year old Foundation.

So as not to disrupt patient care in the original 17,000 square-foot ED facility, the renovation will take place in five stages. The completed project will be double its current size and total 34,000 square feet.

When the entire project is complete in August 2019 there will be:• 48 private rooms.• Dedicated patient areas for behavioral health, stroke, heart

attack and other trauma.• Enhanced space for clinical collaboration for diagnoses,

treatment and home care.• Family consultation areas for physicians and caregivers to

talk privately with loved ones.• Improved processes and efficiencies for

hospital admissions.• Walk-in patient entrance, complimentary valet services, and

a convenient connection to the main hospital.

“This new space, once completed, will be where very significant moments of the lives of those in our community – and others – will be realized in days and years to come,” said Mannix.

Each day, hearts beat or cease, in these rooms – and that makes this one of the most important places in this region for your family’s health and ours.

Foundation meets goal for Emergency DepartmentMoments Matter

Capital Campaign donors celebrated the opening of the

new Emergency Department.

Prior to schedule, the Augusta Health Foundation met its goal of $2 million for the Moments Matter Campaign to support the expansion of the Emergency Department.

“We have been overwhelmed by the community’s generosity toward this project,” said Jim Perkins. “We had a goal of raising $1 million in 2017 and the remaining $1 million in 2018, yet the Augusta Health Board, Foundation Board, physicians, employees, foundations and businesses stepped up to help support this critical community project,” said Perkins. The Foundation ended 2017 with more than $1.6 million raised for the Moments Matter Campaign.

The Public Phase of the Moments Matter Campaign began in September 2018, when the Foundation was only $30,000 from its $2 million goal. “We wanted to provide residents with an opportunity to make a gift to support the expanded Emergency Department,” said Tami Radecke, Executive Director of the Augusta Health Foundation. “Members of our community stepped up and put us over the top! They really made a difference,” said Radecke.

“We are truly grateful for the community’s support,” said Robin Crowder, Augusta Health Foundation Board Chair. “We know how very important this project is to providing for the emergency needs of our community.”

Sodexo, the health system’s food service partner, provided a $100,000 challenge grant to help the Foundation meet its goal.

18 AUGUSTA HEALTH FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2017–2018

You know you have a powerhouse group of women when you realize that these 23 individuals stand behind a major gift to support the new Emergency Department.

The Augusta Health Foundation Women’s Giving Circle was founded in 2017. With 20 charter members, it is the force behind a $50,000 gift that will provide for a new Forensics Room in the Emergency Department.

When offered the chance to contribute as a group, they selected a room that would help sexual assault victims in our region.

In addition to investing in the success of Augusta Health, these women typically gather at a member’s home three times each year to learn about important women’s health issues from health system experts.

Topics have included:

Robotic Surgery, Margaret Flather, MD, GynecologySANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) Program, Renee Pullen, BSN, Emergency DepartmentArrhythmia: “What Makes Women Tick,” Glenn Brammer, MD, CardiologistMoles and Other Skin Concerns, Kristen Savola, MD, DermatologistCancer in Women, Kelvin Raybon, MD, Hematology/Oncology

Not only do they attend the WGC events, but this diverse group of women meet for an impromptu coffee to talk about issues that are important to them. In December 2017, Renee Pullen, the SANE Program Coordinator, notified the Foundation that they were in need of clothing for sexual assault victims who had to leave their clothing behind as evidence. The WGC quickly stepped into action and went on a shopping spree to stock the SANE closet with needed items.

These generous women and their philanthropy are committed to making a difference!
