RESULTS Partnerships RESULTS Australia is a member of two international advocacy partnerships. 1. RESULTS Australia is one of seven RESULTS organisations worldwide.

Our RESULTS partners are RESULTS Canada, RESULTS Japan, RESULTS Korea, RESULTS Mexico, RESULTS UK and RESULTS US. 2. RESULTS Australia is also one of twelve partners in ACTION (www.action.org )

Our ACTION partners are RESULTS Canada, RESULTS Japan, RESULTS Korea, RESULTS Mexico, RESULTS UK, RESULTS US, Aequitas Consulting India, CITAM+, KANCO, Global Health Advocates France, Global Health Advocates India, and Princess of Africa Foundation.

RESULTS is an international movement of passionate, committed everyday people. Together we use our voices to influence political decisions that will bring an end to poverty. RESULTS advocacy relies on volunteers who are also supported in their activities by paid staff. Staff deliver training, support, and inspiration to enable volunteers to become skilled advocates to government and the media for improved funding of education, health, and economic opportunity programs for those living in poverty.

ACTION is a global health advocacy partnership of like-minded organisations working to influence policy and mobilise resources to fight diseases of poverty and achieve equitable access to health care. Within this partnership, RESULTS partners utilise volunteers while the advocacy and work of other ACTION partners is conducted solely by paid staff.

Report From Chris Franks, Chair of RESULTS Sometimes our simple letter seems like one lonely voice in a wilderness asking for funds to end to polio and TB. But when we join with others our voices together make a beautiful choir that gets people to stop and listen. And when our small choir joins with choirs around the world our passionate voices influence political decisions that will change the world! Thank you for lending your voice and your persistence and motivation to RESULTS because that’s our secret – consistently writing letters, opinion pieces and visiting parliamentarians. It takes many of our voices, speaking similar words over and over to get our message across and help bring about policy change and maintain funding commitments. To do this we rely on our dedicated and passionate staff team who lead our campaign work and volunteer engagement. I continue to be amazed at how much they have achieved under the leadership of our stellar CEO, Maree Nutt, who we thank sincerely for her long hours and dedication. Thanks also to our directors who give time, energy and support to strengthen the governance of RESULTS. We are lucky to have a grant from the USA at present, which enabled us to employ professional and talented staff to research, plan and train us all. However this grant does not cover all our costs and is not guaranteed as it’s an annual grant so we will be talking much more about financial support and seeking your help on that journey. On that topic RESULTS has recently launched a bequest program so I have added a gift in my Will to keep our work going and I invite you to do the same. Thank you again for your time, commitment and valuable financial support of RESULTS.

Report From Maree Nutt, the CEO of RESULTS For RESULTS, 2015 started off with the Australian Government maintaining a commitment to protect children from life threatening diseases through a $250 million commitment to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. Given continued and severe cuts to the Australian aid program this outcome was a testament to the persistence of our volunteers around Australia, who met with parliamentarians, got published in national and local papers and hosted community events over many months. More funding was forthcoming later in the year for important research into developing better drugs and diagnostic tests to fight TB an age-old infectious killer. Again RESULTS advocates have been at the advocacy frontline on this issue over several years. I am also incredibly proud of the role RESULTS played in 2015 helping to launch an Asia Pacific TB Caucus of parliamentarians to help drive political commitment to end TB across the region. Globally, 2015 marked the end of fifteen years of the Millennium Development Goals and the halving of poverty related child deaths. This is an incredible achievement and RESULTS can be proud of the role we played. And yet, there is more work to be done. With the launch of the Global Goals for Sustainable Development it’s possible that by 2030 no one would live in extreme poverty, and that we all live in peace and dignity on a planet that is protected. This will only happen when we call our political leaders to act boldly and our passionate RESULTS grassroots advocates are skilled and determined to make this happen especially with more groups starting around the country this year.

So thanks to you all for your contributions this year - to the Board under the leadership of Chris Franks who all worked tirelessly to consolidate our governance structures, to the fabulous and dedicated RESULTS staff and especially to you our advocates, donors and supporters. It has been an honour to be your partner in 2015.

RESULTS amazing grassroots advocates

RESULTS’ foundation is one of passionate, committed, everyday people using their voices to influence political decisions that will bring an end to poverty. For some this comes ever so easily and for others, our dedicated staff, Group Leaders and others in our volunteer community help train, support and inspire them to over time, become skilled advocates. In 2015 we expanded our grassroots community of advocates with new groups in Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne City. In 2016 we hope to add even more and build their skills with new and improved training and resources. Attendance at our monthly Sunday afternoon Fact and Action calls also grew and grew, thanks in part to an array of amazing expert guest speakers. In 2015 our grassroots advocates demonstrated their media skills with more than a hundred letters and four opinion pieces published. It is worth noting that for some publications, our advocates’ letters and opinion pieces were their only coverage of the September launch of the historic United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the roadmap for the end of poverty by 2030. In 2015 our grassroots advocates also met with a total of 65 parliamentarians either in their electorates or in Canberra. They met on issues ranging from better tools to combat TB to urging for a reversal of the unprecedented cuts to the Australian aid program. Senators and MPs in turn were inspired to take numerous actions including several speeches.

And if that wasn’t enough, our grassroots groups undertook fundraising activities raising almost $20,000 as well as providing opportunities for others to connect with our valuable work. Thanks to our amazing grassroots advocates, RESULTS can be proud of its role in

- Securing a $250 million pledge to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance - Enabling a $30 million commitment for medical research to develop better tools to

fight TB and Malaria It’s no wonder that RESULTS grassroots advocates are often the envy of others who aspire to such skill and passion.

“I had the pleasure yesterday of meeting with one of my constituents, Josh Morgan, who is doing outstanding work as a volunteer with RESULTS… They say we cannot achieve sustainable development goal 3, which ensures healthy lives and promotes wellbeing for all at all ages, without increased access to vaccines against preventable diseases and treatments of epidemics like HIV, TB and malaria amongst the poorest and most remote people in the world, including in our region. They have urged that funding for the aid program be reinstated to 0.3 per cent of GNI by 2018-19. I support this. I think that aid cuts are foolish.”

#Vaccineswork

$7.5 billion….That's how much donors from around the world, including Australia

pledged to Gavi the Vaccine Alliance in January 2015. It was an historic win for the world's

children, and the outcome of a massive global effort by RESULTS and other advocates.

With $7.5 billion, Gavi will be able to ensure that an additional 300 million children will be protected against killer diseases like pneumonia, diarrhoeal disease, tetanus and polio. Over the next 5 years this will save the lives of up to 6 million children.

Despite unprecedented cuts to Australian Aid in the previous December the Australian

Government maintained its previous level of commitment by pledging another $250 million

over 2016-2020.

This achievement was in part due to intense advocacy by RESULTS over the previous year including securing cross-party support from 100 MPs who sent letters in support of Gavi to Minister Bishop. Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance is a global partnership which since 2000 has immunised half a billion children and saved an estimated seven million lives. Since 2000, Gavi has negotiated lower vaccine prices, improved health systems and helped countries build long-term capacity to pay for and deliver vaccines themselves. Gavi represents a very sound investment of Australian aid.

#Nutritionforgrowth Good nutrition underpins good health. It also underpins both physical and cognitive development. Yet despite the planet producing more than enough food to meet everyone’s needs there are still almost 800 million people who go hungry and almost half all child deaths (a total of 3 million) are due to under nutrition. Like many other donors, only a small proportion of Australian aid is directed to programs specifically addressing nutrition issues ($21 million in 2014-15). RESULTS staff led advocacy in 2015 focussed influencing policy changes in order to build foundations for a stronger investment in nutrition in coming years. RESULTS advocacy helped ensure that the Australian Government’s Health for Development Strategy identified nutrition as a priority investment in the aid program. The new strategy, released by Minister Bishop in June 2015 noted that “good nutrition in early life lays the foundation for good health and productivity in later life—investments in good nutrition today are investments in the economic markets of tomorrow.”

RESULTS briefing to the chair of the Foreign Affairs and Aid Sub-Committee, Dr Sharman Stone, in turn influenced the terms of reference for the inquiry into “The role of development partnerships in agriculture and agribusiness in promoting prosperity, reducing poverty and enhancing stability in the Indo-Pacific region.” RESULTS provided a detailed nutrition focussed submission and will give evidence to the inquiry in the first half of 2016. Finally, RESULTS co-hosted a parliamentary event in October for World Food Day attended by 19 parliamentarians including keynote speaker, the Minister for International Development, Steve Ciobo.

#EndTB

RESULTS to Make a TB Free World RESULTS is passionate about ending TB - a disease which in 2015 the WHO reported as the leading infectious killer in the world. Despite being around since the days of ancient Egypt, it still claims the lives of 1.5 million mostly poor people every year despite it being totally preventable and curable. With new tools to diagnose, treat and prevent TB and with greater political commitment, a TB free world is possible. So when Minister Bishop announced on the eve of World TB Day a new commitment of $30 million over three years which included bringing new diagnostic tests and drugs to market to support the eradication of tuberculosis RESULTS celebrated another step towards a TB free world. This announcement was the culmination of more than two years of RESULTS campaigning including volunteer and staff led advocacy marked by over 100 meetings with and letters to Parliamentarians from the Government, Opposition and cross benches. Our campaigning also included supporting TB researchers, scientists and medical professionals to become skilled advocates through a newly formed TB Forum. Our advocacy tour with TB survivor from The Philippines, Louie Zepeda, included meetings with grassroots, parliamentarians and Ministers and media across TV, radio and print. With some 60 per cent of the world’s TB cases occur in the Asia Pacific region, where nearly five million people fall ill each year, the continued development of drug-resistant TB is a threat to regional and global health security. RESULTS was therefore thrilled, as the coordinator of the first meeting of the Asia Pacific TB Caucus held in Sydney in September, with the cooperation shown by the regional leaders from eight countries to the fight to end TB. Members of the Asia Pacific TB Caucus vowed to take action both collectively and individually to drive progress against TB by working with national parliaments, and regional and global organisations to build support for the necessary policies and to mobilise resources for more effectively tackling the disease.

The Caucus is founded in the principle that by working together across political and geographical divides, parliamentarians can drive significant change.

#EducationForAll In 2015 education was a RESULTS campaign area with limited capacity. Despite this, we continued to engage strategically with parliamentarians and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT) through meetings and correspondence. Our aim was to ensure that education for all remained a key priority within Australia’s aid program, with special focus on early childhood and basic education for marginalised children. The DFAT Education Strategy released mid-year reflected many of the areas RESULTS highlighted during the consultation process namely, investing in early childhood education and quality education outcomes as well as prioritising inclusiveness especially for girls and children living with a disability. Despite an overall cut of 20 per cent to Australian aid in 2015-16, education aid still accounted for 18.6 per cent of total aid and Australia’s pledge to the Global Partnership for Education for the year was not only paid in full, but some of overall pledge was paid in advance! The privatisation of education was also a key topic on the agenda for our Washington meeting with Australia’s Executive Director and the World Bank in June. Joining our partners from RESULTS Korea, they were able to share first hand the benefits that past access to aid support for education has contributed to the growth and development of South Korea as an emerging Asian nation of today.

When we put education first, we can reduce poverty and hunger, end wasted potential – and look forward to stronger and better societies for all.

Thanks WE CANNOT SAY THIS LOUDLY ENOUGH – THANK YOU!! First Thank you to our wonderful volunteers you listen, learn, educate and advocate and our success is your success thanks to the many and varied ways that you invest yourself in RESULTS. Thanks to our wonderful office volunteers who bring great skills to help with events, research, social media and communications and make life that little bit easier for staff who are always stretched to the limit. Thank you to our amazing interns who commit for several months and then bring high level skills to shape and craft our message, our events and our advocacy. THANK YOU to our major funder RESULTS Educational Fund (US) and the organisations and individuals that support the fund which transformed this organisation and its impact with a three year major grant that enables us to employ staff and for your confidence in our work. Thank you to our other grant donor Aeras. Very sincere thanks to our regular monthly donors, individual donors and new lifetime members who are the lifeblood of RESULTS – without you we could not operate despite the other grants we receive. Thank you to our Hobart, Melbourne Hills and Sydney Northern Beaches and Sydney City groups for running or being part of fundraising events in their local communities during the year. AND NOW A BIG PLEASE BECAUSE WE NEED MORE SUPPORT RESULTS works on a tiny budget to fund smart, committed staff who in turn motivate, educate and mobilise volunteers like you to get involved and with them your impact is immense. In one 18 month period it cost us just under one million dollars to run the organisation and that investment resulted in mobilisation of over $300 million to vital lifesaving vaccine and dozens, perhaps even hundreds of programs world-wide. Please make a donation today - we can guarantee to double, triple or even quadruple the impact of your donation with our advocacy – no other organisations can match that. Please be assured that we rely on your support because RESULTS does not apply for or receive government funds – that would undermine our independence and ability to be fearless and forthright in our advocacy. Please make a monthly commitment by donating online at www.results.org.au or by calling us on 1300 713 037.
