Dear Parents, Alumni, and Friends of ISB,
It is my sincere pleasure to welcome you to ISB’s 2015-2016 Annual Report. And, having now completed my first year as ISB Director, I am even more pleased to be able to report to you that ISB continues to thrive.
For any new director, a top priority is building an understanding of the many factors and forces that equip an organization like ISB to be successful. Over the course of my first year, I’ve come to appreciate that the “ISB Community,” in the broadest sense of that term, is perhaps the single-most important of these forces.
This school – Your ISB – benefits from an active and committed parent body; the 65-year legacy and continued investment of a global alumni community; an expert and deeply-caring faculty; students who are engaged, diverse, and globally-minded; and strong collaborations with local and international mission-aligned partners.
Simply put, the ISB Community is the heart and soul of this institution. And it is the many contributions of this community that act as the engine which drives ISB forward.
Those contributions come in multiple shapes and forms and, when taken in combination, their impact on the ISB student experience and organization as a whole is nothing less than extraordinary. It is only through community support that ISB is able to move forward as a leading international school, preparing our students for a rapidly changing world and empowering them to understand the potential they have as tomorrow’s innovators and leaders.
This Annual Report highlights our progress on that journey throughout the 2015-2016 school year, and the many contributors who made our continued growth, sustainability and forward progress possible.

Our Community
“Whether I’m talking to a family attending ISB today or alumni who were here 40 years ago, there’s always a special bond that’s unique to the ISB family. To me, that sense of belonging really defines this community.”

Our History
1951
The American School of Brussels is founded to meet the need of U.S. Department of Defense military personnel and their families living in Brussels. It opens its doors in October to 27 children and 4 teachers in grades one through six in Woluwe-St.-Pierre.
1952-1953
The school is moved to Boitsfort, first at Avenue Van Becelaere 9, and Dr. Arthur T. Denyer is appointed Superintendent in 1952. In 1953, the first lease is signed for the Château des Fougères and the official name of the school is changed to The International School of Brussels. The school year begins with 112 students in grades one to eight.
1957-1962
Three structures (known affectionately by the students as “the shacks”) are built in front of the Château on the current parking lot, providing four classrooms and two science labs. ISB has its first senior graduating class in 1962.
1964-1967
Donald K. Phillips is appointed Superintendent in 1964. The new High School is officially opened in 1966, and later becomes a home for the Middle School from 1969-2000. The new Elementary/Middle School (currently the Elementary School) is opened in 1967. ISB now has over 1000 students.
1969
William R. Schumacher is appointed Superintendent. He establishes three school divisions, and also institutes a sports programme to provide competition with other schools.
1971-1972
The Upper Field is constructed and the ISB American Football team plays its first games. Kindergarten classes are added, and classes for children with special learning needs are begun under the guidance of Jim Sidgwick. Albert J. Perelli is appointed the new Superintendent in 1972.
1975-1976
ISB receives authorization to offer the International Baccalaureate curriculum in the High School. There are now 206 companies and organizations representing the student population of 1051. Students from the U.S. make up nearly 75% of the total with 29 other countries represented.
1977 - 1979
The first International Festival is organized by the PTA in 1977. In 1978, the Métairie building is acquired and added to the school campus to house the music and High School French programmes. The tennis courts are added in 1979.
1980-1981
Bob Ater becomes Superintendent after serving as the HS Headmaster from 1973-1977. There is a renewed interest in construction as music and drama are now part of the curriculum and the athletics programme is expanding. Thompson Field is dedicated in 1981.
1983
The new gym and auditorium are opened and ISB increases its sports activities to include the International Schools Sports Tournament (ISST) programme so students can compete with other international schools in Europe. The Special Education Unit is opened with four students.
1989-1991
Richard P. Hall arrives at ISB as Superintendent in 1989. The Annex building is constructed, as well as a new high school refectory and science labs.
1994
The Stockhem building is razed and the Early Childhood Centre building is constructed on the same site, creating a separate division for classes from preschool to 2nd grade.

Our History
2000-2001
The new Middle School is opened and the current High School building is modernized. The old Middle School continues to this day as the International Community Centre. More than 400 computers are available for student use in all divisions.
2002
Kevin Bartlett is appointed ISB Director in 2001. ISB adopts the Mission statement: “Everyone Included, Everyone Challenged, Everyone Successful.”
2005
ISB graduates its first student with intensive learning needs.
2008-2009
In 2008 the school implements one-to-one technology - one laptop or tablet for every student. In 2009, ISB is recognized by the National Association of Independent Schools as a “School of the Future” and is praised for its outstanding integration of tradition and innovation.
2012
After two years of construction, the new High School building opens its doors. Designed to reflect and support ISB’s key learning principles, the High School becomes a model for learning space enhancements in the other school divisions. Enrolment moves beyond 1500 students.
2015
Lee Fertig arrives as the new ISB Director. The school continues be a diverse and rich international community with a commitment to empowering students for the future.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is a course of study which is taken by students in their final two years of High School. It is a broad-based and in depth high school experience. Students choose six subjects chosen
from the areas of Sciences, The arts, Studies in language and literature, Language acquisition, Individuals and societies, and Mathematics, plus three central requirements: Theory of Knowledge course, the Extended Essay, and CAS
(Community, Action, Service).
The International School of Brussels was among the first fifty schools in the world to offer the programme. The Diploma Programme has been an integral component of the life of ISB and shares much in common with the
educational values of ISB’s own Diploma Programme and Learner Profile.

“ISB has been the focal point of my life for over 30 years, as a parent and as a teacher. It’s where I watched my three children grow into the people they are today, where I’ve enjoyed working with wonderful students from around the world, and where I have had the privilege of collaborating with amazing colleagues who have also become life-long friends. I have such warm memories of my students from over the years, and it’s very touching to think that they also remember their teachers with fondness.”
The James Sidgwick Teacher Recognition Award
Established In 1995 by the ISB Foundation, the James Sidgwick Teacher
Recognition Award honours members of the ISB faculty for their extraordinary dedication and commitment to the school. The award was named after
James Sidgwick, who served as Deputy Headmaster (1956-1969) as well as Headmaster of the Elementary School (1969-1988). Each year,
a faculty recipient is selected from a different division or section of the school by alumni vote.
We are delighted to announce Frances Bekhechi as the 2015-2016 Award recipient. Frances taught in both the ECC and ES from 1989 to 2013 and
continues to remain active in the ISB community.
“I had the privilege of teaching with Frances and she was a major inspiration for me when I first began my late blooming career in education. She has a true passion for working with children and helping them to attain their best
through the facilitation of English as a second language. A crucial component of the ISB experience! Thank you Frances!”

Our Commitment to a Greener Campus
At ISB, environmental responsibility is a core value - one that is both embedded in our curriculum, and embodied
in our organisational practice. One way in which we demonstrate our commitment to that value is through
continuous Campus improvements that reduce energy usage, conserve natural resources, and protect our
Campus site.
In 2015-2016 these projects included:
3332
Installation of a new, energy
efficient heating and ventilation system for the Gyms and Theatre
Replacement of lighting in
the Gyms with low-energy
LEDs
New, better-insulated roofs for the
Elementary School, Gyms, Annex, and Theatre
Installation of a more fuel-efficient furnace in
the Early Childhood Centre
Removal of the the campus’
last in-ground oil tank

2015-2016 Financials
ISB is a non-profit school dedicated to its Mission and Vision: an inclusive community where all are challenged and find their own success; a school that develops Independent Learners and International Citizens on a Campus in which all buildings, grounds and services reflect our beliefs and values. This vision is simple but ambitious. It is also real, and
requires realistic financial support.
So how do we achieve it? The answer is through many years of sound governance and careful financial management, steadily building the reserves we need to achieve our long term goals. In recent years, to complement these reserves
and achieve our goals, we increasingly rely upon gifts to the ISB Annual Fund.

The ISB Annual Fund Support for the ISB Annual Fund is an important way in which our global
community helps enhance the ISB experience, year after year. Through gifts from parents, alumni, faculty and staff, and friends around the world, we are
able to strengthen our offerings for students, investment in faculty, and campus infrastructure.
“More than anything, it’s your participation that is so powerful - each and every gift from each and every donor, no matter the amount, is a demonstration of
commitment to our school’s values, Mission, and future. In effect, every gift makes us stronger, because it
means we are moving forward together as a committed and invested community. “

Volunteering and the Family Association
50
The mission of the ISB Family Association is to build a well-informed school community where all families are welcome, all families are encouraged to participate, and all nationalities are celebrated. Without the continued commitment
and generosity of the many volunteers who work tirelessly in support of school events, programmes, and community initiatives, ISB simply would not be the place it is today.

Sharing Knowledge and Partnerships
A vital part of ISB’s Mission is to open the eyes of our students to the possibilities and needs of the wider world, and to prepare them for life after ISB. To do so, we are grateful to partner with people and organizations that bridge the learning
taking place at ISB in all divisions with the world beyond ISB.
Service Learning at ISB in 2015 -2016
Service Learning is a core component of ISB’s academic and socioemotional programme. As part of the IB’s CAS (Community, Action, Service) requirement and the school’s commitment to tackling some of the most pressing global

Hand-a-Thon Middle School Workshop
In May 2015, the Middle School Student Council organized a Hand-a-Thon workshop in a joint venture with eNABLE France.
The challenge of the day was for students to assemble twenty 3D prosthetic hands for children in need across Belgium and France. All hands were printed
by ISB’s Middle School Design Studio using a wide array of filaments and codes provided by eNABLE France. To support this inaugural event, three
young recipients with congenital malformations and their families joined in the day. These honorary guests were essential to the incredible momentum and
provided invaluable support to the student builders.
Thanks to eNABLE France, ISB students were able to engage in a powerful day of learning while simultaneously contributing to a worthwhile and
relevant cause.
World of Work and Beyond ISB
The ISB World of Work Programme offers High School students each year the opportunity to gain valuable work experience and an opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in professional situations during their final summer before
graduation. In 2015-2016, the school’s annual Careers Day, Beyond ISB, benefited from the participation of many ISB alumni who offered the unique
perspective of how an ISB education prepared them for their career pursuits.
Thank you to the many alumni, friends, companies, and organizations who helped make our 2015-2016 Careers Day a success, and to all of our
World of Work Partners who accepted students for summer internships!

Enhancing the ISB Learning Experience: €157,860
Ensuring transformative learning experiences so that all students are included, challenged, and successful is our continuous priority at ISB. Thanks to your support in 2015-2016, we were able to launch and enhance programmes
throughout the school that empower our students to engage with learning in innovative ways and which are detailed in the following pages.
Learning Outside the Classroom
Thanks to support from the ISB Annual Fund, The ISB HS Entrepreneurship Club AOS was able to travel to Boston to compete in the 2016 MIT Launch Club Competition. Presenting their original business plan in front of a panel of
professors and entrepreneurs, AOS culminated 7 months of hard work by tying for first place in the competition.
Innovative Approaches to Learning
As part of ISB’s ongoing mission to explore powerful new approaches to daily learning and deepen student engagement in the classroom and beyond, the Middle School organized a Learning Institute called
In The Zone, held on 23 September 2015. All Middle School students and faculty participated in this special learning event, which aimed to:
This important learning event was a success thanks to the contributions of workshop leaders, volunteers, donors, and the following Partners:
introduce a wide range of new ways of learning and new
technologies for learning
begin a year-long exploration of these learning approaches
across the curriculum
help students find their personal learning passion

Technology for Student-Led Learning
At ISB, students of all ages engage in active, technology- infused, authentic learning experiences which are crucial for the modern learner. Support received in 2015-2016 is helping enrich our digital resources through access to new technologies including digital portfolioing software in the ECC and ES, interactive presentation and design software in the MS, and a new 3D printer to continue
growing our Design and Maker programme.
Supporting Athletics
Community involvement is truly at the heart of the ISB Athletics programme. Thanks to the tireless volunteer
and fundraising efforts of the Sports Council, as well as restricted gifts to the Athletics programme, ISB was able
to invest in Fitbit technology to launch its Raiders Plus programme. In addition, ISB is investing in travel suits for
all Varsity and JV athletes.
Service Learning Responds to the Refugee Crisis
Over the 2015-2016 school year, ISB CAS students embarked on a project to help address the Refugee Crisis
in a meaningful way. Gathering every Thursday for more than 7 months and supported by the ISB Annual Fund,
CAS students, teachers, and parent volunteers assembled and delivered thousands of sandwiches to help feed
refugees in need.
Investment in the Arts
Through the phenomenal efforts of the Arts Council and restricted gifts to the Arts from donors to the ISB Annual Fund, ISB was able to increase support for the Visiting
Artists & Scholars programme in 2015-2016. In addition, the school was able to invest in important ehancements to the ISB theatre that will directly benefit all aspects of the Performing Arts programme. And, thanks to a generous gift from an ISB family, ISB was able to purchase a new,
concert-quality marimba.

A fundamental cornerstone of the ISB Experience is the recruitment, development, and retention of a world-class faculty. Growing the potential and skill sets of our teachers in a meaningful way requires both time and resources, which the
ISB Annual Fund helps make possible.
ASB Unplugged and Learning 2.0
In 2015-2016, ISB made significant investment in building the capacity of our teachers to become even more innovative, technologically adept, and entrepreneurial in their professional practice. Thanks to the generous support of an ISB donor, ISB was able to send 19 teachers from all school divisions to the ASB Unplugged conference in Mumbai,
and 6 teachers to the Learning 2.0 Conference in Milan.
“ASB Unplugged was a whirlwind of an experience that has given me so much to reflect on. I am so appreciative to ISB for sending me to this conference, and I can’t wait to start incorporating these strategies into my teaching!”
Tracy Jabbal, ISB High School Teacher
Fostering Excellence in Teaching: €131,000
Teaching and Learning Coaching
We know that some of the most powerful professional development happens when our teachers have the opportunity to learn from each other. To strengthen this culture of collegial learning, ISB has launched the Teaching and Learning
Coaching programme. Established through funding from the inaugural Kevin Bartlett Leadership in Learning Award and support from the ISB Annual Fund, the Teaching and Learning Coaching programme comprises an initial cohort of six ISB teachers, representing all school divisions. Through their own specialized training and professional development, these teachers have the facilitation skills to coach their colleagues to continuously improve by utilizing research-based
pedagogy and innovative strategies.
Curriculum Development and Alignment
During the 2015-2016 school year a group of mathematics teachers with representation from all four school divisions met to begin reviewing the mathematics curriculum. Working initially with mathematics curriculum consultant Catherine Fosnot, the group mapped the skill components of mathematics from early childhood through high school, considered
recent research on motivation in mathematics learning, and how this should influence our teaching and learning practices. Thanks to support from ISB donors, this work will continue into 2016-2017 as the group works to continue
defining what we want students to understand in the area of mathematics.

Improving our Campus: €332,942
Maximizing the potential for transformative learning and teaching requires optimized learning and teaching spaces. And, in today’s world, guaranteeing a safe and secure learning environment for our entire community is a top priority for the ISB Board and school leadership. Through the ISB Annual Fund and collaboration with Partners, we are realizing
important enhancements to our Campus that directly facilitate ISB’s learning Vision and which strengthen the school’s infrastructure and security.
Early Childhood Centre: Renovation of the Preschool and
Pre-Kindergarten Playground
The playground renovation was based on an open-ended design that promotes spontaneity, risk-taking, exploration,
discovery and connections to nature. As the year progresses, students will be collecting a range of recycled
materials that they can self-select from and incorporate into their playground play, in a sense designing and
constructing their own adaptable play space.
Early Childhood Centre: Creation of “Tinker Spaces”
Hand-on experimentation and unstructured time to explore and invent are important elements in helping children to learn about the world around them, and to develop their creativity. Thanks to donor support, this year the Early
Childhood Centre (ECC) is introducing “Tinker Spaces” to each of our grade level central spaces as a way to provide our students with the necessary materials and space required to engage with this important aspect
of their learning. The children will draw from a range of quality recycled materials that are collected through our ECC recycling centre as a basis for their constructions
and creations.

Elementary School: Creation of a MediaHub, MakerSpace, FabLab,
and RoboZone
Throughout the Elementary School, we have been able to add four different lab spaces to enhance making and
creating opportunities. The MediaHub will empower students to become content creators, developing quality
communications to share with real-world audiences. The MakerSpace, already launched with Grade 4
projects, provides equipment to inspire construction and prototyping as students bring their ideas to tangible
outcomes. The FabLab introduces more specialized equipment, ready to be accessed as students take innovation projects to production stage. And the
RoboZone, housed in the Grade 6 Learning Commons, offers a range of technologies for students to create
original solutions to problems they identify.
High School: Addition of a Design Technology Laboratory
Design thinking is increasingly in demand in the world of work today, and it places students in situations that require inquiry-based approaches to learning, critical thinking, and creative and innovative problem-solving. The addition of Design Technology to our curriculum offerings in the High School has been in the planning
for a few years. Thanks to donor support, we have been able to resource our new laboratory space to launch
this important and authentic learning experience for our students.

Investment in Campus Security
ISB is committed to ensuring a safe and secure learning environment for our community. Thanks to
support from donors and the commitment of the ISB Board of Trustees, we are installing a full campus
perimeter fence and implementing significant security upgrades throughout the Campus.
ISB Theatre: Renovation of the Makeup and Dressing Rooms
Thanks to a generous gift from an ISB family, ISB was able to expedite needed renovations to the makeup and
changing facilities underneath the ISB Theatre.
Thank You!
On behalf of the International School of Brussels and its Board of Trustees, I would like to express my sincere thanks to all in the ISB Community who contributed to the success of our 2015-2016 school year. Your support as donors, volunteers, educators, alumni, parents and institutional partners has been vital to ISB’s continued success, and we are deeply grateful for your commitment.
