Annual Report for 2013/14Rutland Historic Churches Preservation Trust exists toprovide financial assistance to the 63 churches and chapelswithin the County of Rutland, whenever they may needhelp for conservation and maintenance. All of these placesof worship, fine buildings, have been inherited by ourgeneration to use and to care for, and to pass on, diligentlypreserved, as we have received them. Our new income for this year has come from kind andgenerous donations from the following Rutland ParochialChurch Councils: Belton & Wardley, Hambleton, Morcott,Pickworth, Pilton, Preston, Stoke Dry, Tixover andWhissendine to all of whom we acknowledge our sincerethanks. The Finance Sub-Committee continues to keep ourinvestments closely under review. In response to thecontinuing climate of very low interest rates for cashinvestments the trustees are cautiously developing a policyof increasing the proportion of our investments which areheld in the COIF range of recommended equity fundssuitable for Charities, where we anticipate that such fundscan remain in investment for the medium term. Thetrustees have prepared an information leaflet on the subjectof Legacy Giving, a copy of which is included with thisAnnual Report. On Saturday 14thSeptember 2013 the Sponsored Ride andStride around the churches and chapels of Rutland wasvery well supported on a fine day, and raised in total£16,480 Half of this sum was returned to the individualRutland churches nominated by the participants and halfwas added to RHCPT Funds for the future support of allRutland Churches. Hanson Cement arranged all theprinting with significant cost saving to the Trust. BarnsdaleLodge Hotel and Rutland Cycling also assisted withpublicity and the provision of vouchers for the bestwalking and cycling team endeavour. A presentationevening was hosted by Barnsdale Lodge Hotel, attendedby The Lord Lieutenant of Rutland. The Davenport Cupwas presented to Ian Curtis of Langham who visited 51churches, an award for the best team performance went tothe Case family of Hambleton and Mike and Sue Bleereceived an award for their achievement of walking to 25churches.This meeting also marked the retirement from the Ride &Stride sub-Committee of Mr Richard Adams, who had ledthe R&S organisation for the past 15 years. The Trusteeswish to acknowledge the debt of gratitude owed to Richard, who will continue to serve as a trustee of RHCPT, for hisleadership and the success of his team’s work over thesepast years. We are also sad to report that Mr GeorgeShepherd has retired both as a member of the R&S sub-Committee and as a Trustee of RHCPT. The trustees wish

to record their gratitude to George for his majorcontribution to the Trust’s work over a period of 9 years. He will be very much missed. In October 2013 we welcomed Mr Peter Hitchcox ofGreetham as a new Trustee to take over responsibility forthe churches and parishes previously under the care ofGeorge Shepherd. We are also very pleased to welcome, both as a newTrustee and as leader of the R&S Sub-committee, MrRichard Foulkes of Hambleton, who joins the Trust witheffect from our AGM 2014.During the past Financial Year the Trust has approvedgrants totalling £24,000 to Edith Weston, Exton,Greetham, Ketton Methodist Church and Preston. Thefunds were granted for structural and roofing repairs andtowards the replacement of a heating system. As and when their Church Quinquennial Reports areissued we are encouraging the parochial church councilsto contact us for financial help, if they need it, so that theymay complete the recommended work promptly, thusavoiding any unnecessary deterioration to their ChurchFabric. Finally, we record with great sadness, the loss of our VicePresident Sir David Davenport-Handley, who departedthis life in January 2014 at the age of 94. He was aFounder Member of the Trust in 1954 and Chairman ofthe Trustees from 1987 to 2004 (the 50th Anniversary ofthe Trust’s formation). His influence on the construction ofour Trust Deed and upon the guiding principles of theTrust’s policies in supporting our Rutland Churches wasinestimable. Until the very end of his life he continued totake an active interest in the Trust’s grant giving policies, financial planning and fundraising. A Churchwarden ofClipsham until his death, he was a strong believer in theregular maintenance of the fabric of our churches, and inparticular in promptly carrying out the workrecommended by the Church Architect in theQuinquennial Reports. On Sir David’s retirement asChairman of the Trust and appointment as Vice Presidentin 2004, the Bishop of Peterborough, in tribute said: “Sir David’s concern and support was not only forchurches and their people, but for the worship that takesplace. As Chairman he had always been most kind andhospitable.” We acknowledge his extraordinarycontribution to the Trust and to the care of our Churchesand their people. The Trustees wish to take this public opportunity ofthanking all of our supporters, sponsors and donors for allthey have contributed during the past year. During thecoming year, as in the past, we confidently look forwardto receiving the continuing favour of our benefactors, andto providing all necessary support to our beautiful Rutlandchurches.
