Annual Officer Retreat

April 20-21 the Session and Diaconate of Second Presbyterian Church will be on retreat at

Ferncliff Camp and Conference Center.

The title of the retreat this year is:

Cultivating Intimacy With God

During the retreat church officers will

learn about prayer from a Biblical perspective

gain some new tools and practical resources for the spiritual discipline of prayer

spend time in individual prayer

worship with other elders, deacons, and members of the church staff

You may wonder why the focus of the retreat this year is on prayer and spirituality, rather than

having a strategic planning retreat or goal-setting retreat. The answer is that elders and deacons

are not simply a “Board of Directors” who conduct the church’s business. They have been

called by God and elected by the people of this congregation to be the spiritual leaders of the

church. During the course of the coming year they will make plans and set goals and talk about

programs and attend to the budget (and all this is important and essential), but what separates

the church from any other volunteer organization is the spiritual nature of our life together.

Elders and deacons will be better able to give wise and faithful spiritual leadership it they are

attending to their own relationship with God. The purpose of this retreat is to help them do that.

Please keep your church leaders in your prayers as they spend this important time together.

Christ’s peace,

Steve

Young and “Not-so-Young” enjoyed a perfect day for our annual Easter Egg Hunt! Children, parents, and grandparents had fun finding eggs, decorating cookies, planting flowers, participating in craft projects, visiting with the Easter Bunny, and hearing the story of the first Easter in a special story time. Thanks to all who helped make this a special day for our little ones!!

A New Short Term Adult Sunday School Class

”The Ten Commandments”

9:50 in Room 65/66 If you are expecting an epic movie, you might be a little disappointed. But, if you are looking for an “Epic Sunday

School class,” join us for an exploration of the Ten Commandments leaning on extensive reflection by Patrick D Miller.

Careful attention will be given to each commandment in its original context, exploring with class participants the

modern relevance of these basic principles as well as how the ideas of each commandment influenced the New

Testament and the history of Christian thought. The course will call to mind history, art, and current events which

underscore the complexity of interpretation and enliven the claiming of the text for our community of faith. Many of you

will remember Pat Miller as our Lyon lecturer in 2007. His books "The Ten Commandments" and "The God You Have"

will serve as presenter resources but will not be required reading nor with they be provided. This class will be led by

Steve Hancock, Henry Goodspeed, Jim Hester, and Don Wardlaw.

Christianity’s Family Tree: What Other Christians Believe and Why by Adam Hamilton

Sunday, April 22

Connections Café Sunday School Class 9:50 in Second Hall Why do Orthodox Christians use icons in worship? What is the “baptism in the Holy Spirit” that Pentecostals speak

about? Why do Roman Catholics focus on the Eucharist in worship? What do Lutherans teach us about salvation?

What do Presbyterians teach us about God’s power? How can Episcopalians deepen our prayer life? What can

Baptists teach us about living for Christ?

We will begin answering these questions and more as we learn of the history, theology, and distinctive emphases of

eight different Christian denominations and faith traditions. For each tradition, we’ll hear (via DVD) from a clergy

member of that tradition and look at Scriptures that have shaped that faith.

Visiting Youth Choir to Sing at Nine O’clock Worship April 22nd Exaltation Choir from Canyon Creek Presbyterian Church in Richardson, Texas will be joining us to lead worship at

the Nine O’clock worship service on April 22nd. This choral ensemble of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade youth rehearses weekly

to prepare anthems for worship each month as well as for special services throughout the church year. Each spring,

Exaltation travels for a weekend to share God’s Word in song with other churches and retirement communities outside

of Richardson. While in Little Rock, Exaltation will be singing for worship services at Second Presbyterian Church and

Trinity Presbyterian Church as well as singing for residents at Presbyterian Village. The choir is directed by Marsha

Ray, Associate Director of Music Ministries, assisted by David Hays, Director of Music Ministries, and accompanied

by Dr. Sally Hill, organist.

..."Man, this furnace is COOL!" It's Cool in the Furnace will be presented in worship on Mother's Day by our Cherub and Covenant Choirs. The children's choirs kicked off rehearsals with a SUPER-FUN lock-in the last weekend in March. Many parents helped to make the lock-in fun... THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to everyone who helped make the weekend a wonderful success. A special note of appreciation to Deborah Rookey and Noah Adams, our Youth volunteers, for their service... and to the many who came to scoop ice cream, flip pancakes, sit with children in rehearsal, provide snacks, sleep on the floor... sleep? THANK YOU!

Family Promise - Thank you volunteers

Thank you, everyone who helped with this latest rotation of Family Promise. Whether you helped set up the rooms (Bible Village kids). Whether you stocked the fridge (Jo Paulus and Becky Farrow). Whether you brought a meal (Stephanie Wade and kids, Young Adult Sunday School class, Amy Lloyd and kids, the Gavigan/Holder gang, Hulda Circle, the Carter and Henry gang, Clay Murphy, Jennifer Lowery, and Jane Beachboard). Perhaps you spent the night at church (Audry and Byron Reeves, Peggy Marshall, Rob Owens, Tracy and Lyland Sykes, Jennifer Chilcoat, Matt Christenson, Dianne and Bob Skinner, Missie Hancock, and Herb Rule). Perhaps you just spent an afternoon with the families (Joe Henry). Maybe you helped put it all back in the closet (Becky and Jackson Farrow). From the families, I say thank you. For those who stepped up at the last minute to fill in a few holes in the schedule, I say thank you. If you didn't get a chance to help out this time, we have an opportunity about once a quarter. Our next rotation is June 24 - July 1. If you’re interested, ask one of these volunteers what it's all about. If you would like to volunteer or have more questions, let me know. SECOND PRESBYTERIAN DOCUMENTARY FILM SERIES

SUNDAYS - APRIL 22, & 29

3:00-5:00 PM; Second Hall

POPCORN, DRINKS, AND MOVIES!!!!

April 22- “KJB: The Amazing Tale of the Birth of the King James Bible”- Facilitator: Ben Combs

This film tells the thrilling true story behind the most important manuscript in history. Acclaimed actor

John Rhys-Davies visits landmarks, explains relics and leads the audience back into a darker time to

discover this fascinating tale of saints and sinners, power and passion, as the greatest translation of Holy

Scripture emerges into a world and culture that would never be quite the same again.

April 29- “Food, Inc.” - Facilitator: Rex Enoch (Retired Director of Education, Heifer Project International)

“Food, Inc.” does for the supermarket what Jaws did for the beach.” The movie is shaking up our

perceptions of what we eat. This powerful documentary deconstructing the corporate food industry in

America provides facts behind problems like food poisoning, pollution, labor abuse, and rampant

hunger….and shows what you can do to help make a difference.

15 ways to recycle plastic milk jugs

Did you know that there are millions of plastic items floating around out there in landfills? Kind of a sickening

thought, huh? You can keep your plastic milk jugs out of the garbage and the landfills by reusing them for

everyday household organization and storage, in your yard and garden and basic toys for your kids. Try out

some of these ideas.

Make a cheap, easy and convenient bird feeder.

Use them as a seed starting container by cutting off the jug about 3 inches from the bottom and poking small holes in

the bottom for water drainage. Fill with potting soil and some seeds.

Poke holes in the bottom of the jug and use as a watering can for your garden plants and flowers.

Cut into strips and use a permanent marker to make plant markers.

Cut the bottom and part of the handle off and use as a scoop.

Cut off the bottom of the jug, poke a hole at the top of the handle and thread heavy wire through into the soil and use

as a protector of your plants from the hot sun or inclement weather.

Use as floaters for your kids when they are swimming or in the water.

Cut the bottom off and use the top as a funnel.

Cut a hole opposite the handle and use as a storage container for almost anything. Works great for storing golf balls,

nails, screws, and rubber bands and probably a thousand other things.

Cut out a hole opposite the handle and use to store your plastic bags.

Save them for when you need water.

Cut the top off and use the bottom as a catch all container for things that don't have a permanent home.

Cut a hole near the top and use to store your toilet brush.

Use to store dry goods such as rice, coffee, and sugar.

Cut a 1/4 inch slit near the top of the milk jug and use as a piggy bank.

Kids come to camp for fun and in the course of events they learn new skills, self-

confidence, grow friendships and explore what it means to live in harmony with their

Creator. Since the camp experience is full of sights, sounds, experiences and fun, it

makes an impression on children that lasts a lifetime. Jesus didn’t choose a

classroom setting for sharing the Good News. Jesus chose the small group, round-

the-clock, experiential learning model. Jesus conducted camp with his disciples.

Children need meaningful mentors beyond their parents. Enthusiastic young adult

counselors fill this important role. In our backyard we have one of the best

Presbyterian summer camps in the nation. Ferncliff has a national reputation for

creative programming, quality staff, creation care, and mission focus. There is a wide

variety of camps to choose from throughout the weeks of June and July. Registration

has recently opened. Go to www.ferncliff.org and look for a fun week of camp for your

kids – or family camp for the whole family. It can make a long lasting, positive impact

on their lives. It is a place where faith and fun flourish together.

We know that learning is enhanced by fun. It’s FUNdamental! Kids

gravitate toward what is fun. Effective education taps in to this.

We would appreciate your help…..In keeping the church office informed when there is a sickness in your family, when someone is in the hospital, or a death has occurred. Please also keep us updated on the sickness or concern so that the information we have on our Care and Concern line is accurate. Members and friends can call the Care and Concern Line, 227-6117, on weekdays to receive information about prayer concerns in our church family. We will honor all requests for confidentiality, but in order for us to offer pastoral care, we need to be aware of your situation. We also want to know about the joys, accomplishments and achievements of members of the church. Please call Nancy Coleman or Karen Akin in the church office with information, 227-0000, or email [email protected] or [email protected]. Thanks for your help! Heritage Committee Seeks 2nd Pres Memorabilia. Do you have old certificates, bulletins, newsletter, programs, or other documents from earlier days in the history of our church? The Heritage Committee would like to copy such to help fill in some of the gaps in our church records. Please contact Fayrene Johnson, 663-2733 or [email protected]
