2Luso Canadian Charitable Society

As the President of Luso Canadian Charitable Society, I am continually impressed by the organization’s accomplishments thanks to the incredible support of individuals, community, corporations and the governments of Canada, Portugal and Ontario. The team includes incredible volunteers, families, founders, Board of Directors and dedicated, professional staff. Luso’s success has been a team effort since the beginning.

Luso was established to support adults living with developmental and/or physical disabilities and their families and provide a place for personal

growth. Today, that vision is a reality and we are recognized for the quality of our Programs, the professionalism of our staff and the nurturing environment we create for participants and caregivers alike.

In ten short years, since Luso Support Centre Toronto opened, we have grown to three state-of-the-art Support Centres serving the communities of Hamilton, Peel and Toronto. Overnight Respite Care was introduced in Toronto in 2014 to serve another identified gap in services for families and caregivers.

When I reflect on our 2017 accomplishments, it has been a busy year with many rewarding moments and firsts:

• The opening of Luso Support Centre Peel serving the communities of Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga

• Construction of an oversized elevator at Toronto to facilitate safer, easier movement for wheelchair participants

• Record participant levels at Hamilton and Toronto Centres

• The celebration of abilities at our largest-ever International Day of Persons with Disabilities Talent Night showcasing our participants’ talents to an audience of more than 300 guests

• The incredible level of community response to our request for support of the Peel Capital Fund

• Fundraising events of Volta, Golf and Gala achieved new heights for attendance and sponsorship

Our 10th Anniversary Annual Newsletter is a celebration of our achievements and recognizes the milestones Luso Canadian Charitable Society has reached to date. I look forward to 2018 as we continue to make a difference in the lives of our participants and their families. Thank you for being part of our journey.

3rd Annual Volta Luso CharitiesOn your mark, get set, GO! On Sunday, May 7 the Luso Canadian Charitable Society hosted its 3rd Annual Volta Luso Charities fundraiser, presented by long-time supporter LIUNA Local 183.

For the third year in a row, over 400 participants walked or cycled from the Portuguese Cultural Centre of Mississauga through the heart of Streetsville and back for a great cause.

This year’s Volta was especially important as the event proceeds supported our newest Centre at 6245 Mississauga Road, just steps away from the Portuguese Cultural Centre of Mississauga. With the help of dedicated sponsors, participants, donors, media partners, volunteers, staff and committee members, a total of $110,000 was raised. During the event, guests were invited to join Luso’s Chief Executive Officer Heather Grand on a tour of Luso Peel prior to its official grand opening on September 30.

Local politicians Hon. Ahmed Hussen, Hon Charles Sousa, MP’s Gagan Sikand, Iqra Khalid, Peter Fonseca and Sven Spengemann, MPP Bob Delaney, Mississauga Councillors Ron Starr and George Carlson and former Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion visited the Centre to support the opening of another highly needed service for individuals living with disabilities in the Region of Peel.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of this fun-filled event! We would like to thank Luso Hamilton’s President Joe Botelho and his guests for generously donating funds to our event on behalf of his 50th birthday. Happy Birthday Joe! Luso would also like to thank the RBC Royal Bank Stockyards’ staff members who volunteered for the day and donated $1,000 as a community contribution. Join us for another day of walking or riding on September 23, 2018 – rain or shine!

10th Annual Golf TournamentOn Friday, June 9 players teed off at the Luso Canadian Charitable Society’s 10th Annual Golf Tournament, held at Lionhead Golf and Country Club, Brampton. Platinum Presenting Sponsor for the event was longtime supporter LIUNA Local 183. With leadership from Tournament Chair Bernardino Ferreira and the 2017 Golf Committee, Luso raised $140,000 to support its Centres in Hamilton, Peel and Toronto, making this year’s tournament the most successful one to date.

Over 325 players enjoyed a delicious Portuguese lunch courtesy of Nosso Talho, Nova Pastry and Bakery, Nova Era Bakery, Pavão Meats and Deli and Trigo Bakery before competing on Lionhead’s spectacular Masters and Legends courses. Players had a chance to win a lease on brand new BMW Grand Coupe and Mercedes vehicles courtesy of World Fine Cars and Mercedes-Benz Peterborough. Following the tournament, players and guests were invited to the Portuguese Cultural Centre of Mississauga for their famous seafood and steak dinner, live and silent auctions, raffles and other prize-winning games. Our emcee Cynthia Prazeres announced the tournament winners and with over 80 foursomes, competition was fierce!

This day was made possible with the help of our sponsors, donors, guests and devoted team of Golf Committee members and volunteers. A heartfelt thank you to Lionhead Golf and Country Club and the Portuguese Cultural Centre of Mississauga for hosting our event. We look forward to seeing you June 8, 2018 for another day of golf for a great cause.

11th Annual Family GalaOn Saturday, October 21, the Luso Canadian Charitable Society held its 11th Annual Gala presented by LIUNA Local 183 at the Pearson Convention Centre in Brampton honouring the families and other helping hands that care for individuals living with physical and/or developmental disabilities. The theme was near and dear to the hearts of many of our guests, including 2017 Gala Chair Zenny Sousa whose brother lives with a disability. It was a beautiful evening filled with great entertainment, food, laughter (and even some tears) while celebrating the joy that individuals living with disabilities bring to those who know and love them.

Luso’s 11th Annual Gala had record attendance with over 600 guests and raised more than $190,000 for the organization. The evening, led by Luso’s very own Vice-President Lena Barreto as emcee, featured an exciting range of entertainment from Jnrique’s classic guitar performance during cocktails, Milla & Sebastian Figueiredo’s graceful ballroom dancing, Karolina Podolak’s captivating opera singing and CStyxx’s upbeat percussion performances and lively dance music provided by TNT FX. Jack Prazeres, President of the Luso Canadian Charitable Society, thanked all the guests in attendance and delivered a touching speech to Luso’s program participants and their families in admiration of their devotion for their loved ones.

Another exciting highlight of the evening was delivered by the Honourable Charles Sousa, Ontario’s Minister of Finance and MPP for the Mississauga - South Riding, who committed $500,000 to Luso on behalf of the Government of Ontario. The International Union of Painters and Allied Trades District 46 gave a generous $25,000 donation, presented by union representatives Bruno Mandic - Business Manager, Nelson Cidade - Business Representative and Armindo Correia - Assistant Business Manager.

Our sincerest gratitude to all our generous sponsors, donors, guests, Gala Chair, committee members and volunteers for their continued support and for helping create such a memorable evening. Mark the date and join us at our Gala October 20, 2018!

Luso Peel Welcomes PaulChange can be challenging for many individuals. For those who have been home for many years with limited social interaction or various routines, the mere thought of joining an Adult Day Program can be quite daunting.

Luso opened its doors to a new routine and home for our first participant, Paul de Melo, who had been mostly staying at home for more than 30 years! Maria Luisa, Paul’s sister, explains they were “thrilled” to find Luso and felt “it was a blessing for a Portuguese centre to open close to home as it was going back to their roots.” Their family was hesitant at first, mentioning “we weren’t sure if he would like it as he had become used to his life at home. But since the first day, Paul has loved going to the program and speaks highly of the staff. We now think of Luso and its staff members as part of our extended family”.

While Paul mostly enjoyed bowling and knitting during his time at home, he now has many new activities to choose from such as crafts, dancing, singing and playing games while socializing with his friends. Once he warmed up to these activities he was happy to tell his sister how much fun he had by showing her the dance moves he learned and bringing his arts and crafts home with him.

We thank the de Melo family for their continued support, donations and strong advocacy for Luso, but most of all, for bringing Paul into our Centre. Luso Peel is thrilled to have Paul as part of the Luso family. His infectious laugh and heartwarming smile enriches the daily lives of everyone at our Centre!

…He’s been begging to go back! :) Thanks to you and the others for taking such good care of him there.

Julie – Luso Toronto Respite

[We] would like to thank you, your staff, and the organization that you represent for the wonderful care and accommodation that you provided for Cassandra and me as a caregiver in our time of need. Your compassion and acceptance of all people with disabilities is highly commended… I will never forget how wonderful and caring your staff was with Cassandra.

Roman – Luso Toronto Respite

At the heart of the Luso Canadian Charitable Society is

the support staff who work

tirelessly to create a positive, engaging and

caring environment that allows each

participant to reach their full potential.

They play an important role in

fulfilling Luso’s mission to provide quality

programs and services to families and

individuals living with disabilities. We are

proud to have them as part of Luso’s Team!

To all the wonderful staff at ECHO. Thank you again on behalf of Sarah, myself her mom, her dad and all our family for giving Sarah the opportunity to share her talent at the dinner dance. There were a lot of tears of joy and pride. When Sarah was little, a doctor told me she may never really talk. It was a devastating moment though one I refused to believe and began to advocate for her needs.

Music has always been her passion. Even when she could not put many words together, she could sing. Now she can do both. It was a reminder to us how far she has continued to grow...especially since her time at ECHO. It is the best thing that has ever happened to Sarah and to us. With greatest gratitude and thankfulness.

The White Family, extended family and friends – Luso Hamilton

ECHO is a community where people with various disabilities who struggle to interact and socialize are able to make friendships & learn how to communicate their wants & needs. They are truly an inspiration to everyone around them, facing each day with such hope; courage & wonderful smiles ready to face all of their daily challenges & teaching the rest of us how to face obstacles.

Diana Mirassol – Luso Hamilton

The levels of service and care provided by Luso Canadian Charitable Society are unsurpassed. You will simply never find a professional staff that cares more for their clients. For nine years now, our daughter has had a warm and happy welcome every single day — it’s no wonder she looks forward to going!

David – Luso Toronto

Upon graduating from High School, we were apprehensive what the future would hold. Finding Luso was the perfect solution. Each morning, our son is eager to attend his day program and to take part in the many activities that LUSO offers. All of this is only possible through the warm, thoughtful and supportive staff. THANK YOU LUSO!!

Sadly in September of this year Luso Toronto participants, staff and volunteers said goodbye to program participant Jacqueline

Sutherland. Jackie was a charismatic, funny and bright

young lady who brought laughter and joy to Luso. Jackie loved

music, singing, dancing, colouring and socializing with others. She

will be dearly missed by all of us. Rest in peace, Jackie.

Jacqueline Sutherland

Grand Opening of Luso Support Centre PeelThe Luso Canadian Charitable Society unveiled its new Centre in Mississauga, September 30 with the Grand Opening of Luso Peel. Over 100 guests joined Luso’s Board of Directors and staff as they showcased the modern, bright facility and unveiled the Peel Capital Building Fund Donor Walls.

The Official Ceremony included welcoming guests, thanking the many sponsors and donors who contributed to the opening of the Centre and remarks from several politicians in attendance to congratulate Luso on its newest location. Charles Sousa, Ontario’s Minister of Finance and MPP for the Mississauga-South Riding, announced a generous $500,000 grant to Luso on behalf of the Government of Ontario. LIUNA Local 183 Business Manager Jack Oliveira and Executive Board Member Jamie Cortez unveiled the LIUNA Local 183 Donor Wall in recognition of their significant contribution to Luso Peel’s Capital Fund. Minister Sousa and Luso Canadian Charitable Society President Jack Prazeres revealed the Donor Wall acknowledging the numerous contributors to Luso Peel’s Building Fund. Refreshments and tours followed the ceremony.

The Grand Opening would not have been possible without the support of sponsors, donors, participants and volunteers who believed in our vision to serve individuals and their families living with disabilities in the Region of Peel. We would like to thank Luso’s Board of Directors, staff, program participants, community and volunteers for helping us celebrate this milestone in Luso’s history.

Welcome to Luso Support Centre PeelAfter much hard work and anticipation, Luso Support Centre Peel is open to serve adults and their families living with physical and/or developmental disabilities in the Region of Peel. This modern facility is a welcome addition to our existing Centres that provide Adult Day Programs in Toronto and Hamilton. Luso Peel opened its doors to participants in July 2017.

The Centre offers Day Programs Monday to Friday. Prospective participants and their families are invited to tour the facility and experience the bright, spacious and inviting environment firsthand. Families and community partners alike consistently comment on the quality of the facility; its open floor plan and accessibility.

The programs enrich the lives of participants through social interaction, life skills, arts and crafts, music, drama and daily physical activities. Every day is a learning experience for participants. Activities are directed towards individual abilities; supporting their independence and personal growth. Witnessing the program and participants’ progress is truly heartwarming. Not only have our participants become more confident in their own abilities but they have also formed new friendships with others.

We will continue to expand over the next few months and look forward to the construction of a roof top terrace for socializing and gardening activities and the addition of a Snoezelen Room for relaxation and sensory experiences.

Thank you to the many individuals, community groups and businesses that made possible our accessible programs and services to families in the Region of Peel. We look forward to serving more individuals living with disabilities in the community and we invite you to come by for a visit!

As part of their participation in the Good Deeds Cup, The Oakville Rangers Pee Wee AAA Minor Hockey Team hosted a holiday party for Luso participants at the Peel Centre on December 16, bringing fun, holiday cheer, baked goods and gifts for all. Games, a sing-along and best of all, a visit from Santa made for many happy faces. The participants and young hockey players enjoyed interacting and getting to know each other over shared

activities including passing-the-present, unwrapping gifts with oven mitts and the ever-popular parachute game.

Thank you to the Oakville Rangers’ management, players, coaches and families for their generosity and for bringing a sense of family and joy to our participants during the holiday season. The event was a highlight of the year and definitely a “good deed” well done!

Luso Day Programs offer the opportunity for continued learning, developmental growth and participation in stimulating, interactive activities. Programs promote physical and mental well-being, plus the important aspects of social inclusion; encouraging participants to achieve their full potential. Activities are structured to promote participation and engagement. Luso Programs are dynamic; full of experiences and life skills’ learning opportunities. These diverse

activities range from educational-based such as math, language, science and computer instruction, life skills, fine and gross motor activities, daily physical activity and other sensory engaging activities. Snoezelen experiences and social programs such as arts, crafts, drama, music and dance are some of our participants’ favourites. Being able to engage and reach out to our participants, who have varying levels of ability, supports our mission to make every individual feel valued and included.

Enjoying Life Skills LearningEncouraging our participants to develop life skills is an integral part of the Luso’s Day Program. Improving life skills contributes to increased self-confidence, independence and positive social interactions.

Our Day Program includes two very popular activities: Cooking and Computer Training. With the support of our staff, participants in the Cooking Program discuss healthy options and learn useful tips on how to create a menu or shop for groceries. Participants are taught important kitchen safety guidelines and how to make easy and practical meals, which are later enjoyed by participants. Everyone also looks forward to the baked goods which provide dessert for our monthly Pizza Day!

Another favourite life skills’ activity is Computer Training. Staff members tailor activities to individual levels of ability and assist participants in building their computer skills. Luso is continuously exploring new ways to incorporate life skills into the Day Program and looks forward to what 2018 will bring!

Luso Out and About in the CommunityBeing out in the local community is an important part of Luso’s programs. At Luso Toronto we are fortunate to have a wide variety of places to visit and enjoy within our community. Weather permitting, program participants have the opportunity to enjoy fun-filled outings to various parks and playgrounds; play sports, games or simply relax under a tree and enjoy a book. Other popular outings include walks to the grocery store to pick up groceries for our Cooking Program and visits to the nearby Toronto Public Library and the local pet store to see the animals.

Being outdoors allows our participants to soak up some Vitamin D, reduce anxiety and stress and improves their overall physical and mental health. It’s no wonder that participants love going outside and taking part in all that our community has to offer.

International Day of Persons with DisabilitiesGood cheer, popular Disney songs and applause could be heard at this year’s annual Holiday Celebration of Abilities Saturday, November 25 at the LIUNA Local 183 Gerry Gallagher Hall. It was a magical Disney-themed night with impressive musical performances and a wonderful opportunity to celebrate. Program participants from Luso Toronto as well as members of the Society of Portuguese Disabled Persons of Ontario (SPDPO) showcased their talents that evening. Spectacular props and costumes, hand made by participants, staff and Isaura Carneiro, President of the SPDPO months before the event, brought the performances to life. Performers practised countless hours in preparation for the special night and were beaming with pride as applause resounded through the hall. A big thank you to the event organizer Nancy Aideira, staff members Helen Ponte and Devyn May for leading the event and Silvia Marques, our charismatic and witty Master of Ceremonies.

A heartfelt thank you to the many who contributed to the success of the evening: LIUNA Local 183 for donating the use of the hall; Filipe Ferreira and Elizabeth’s mom, Rosa Almeida, for their generous donations; Maureen Sullivan donor of the balloon decor and Margret Higgs and Lucy Tome who provided the various baby baskets for the raffle. Many thanks as well to JL Audio Disc Jockey, Everything Cakes and Europa Catering for making their services available.

Luso thanks the participants and staff who contributed to the evening’s success and the families and community members for celebrating this important occasion with us. The Holiday Celebration of Abilities was a night to remember and we look forward to seeing you at next year’s celebration.

Luso Toronto is thrilled to announce that the construction of our brand new, full-sized elevator is complete! Our new elevator has allowed us to better function in our day-to-day program delivery, especially in transporting our participants using wheelchairs to and from different levels of the building. Program participants were very excited to take their first ride in the new elevator!

We are grateful to the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the Million Dollar Round Table Foundation, Mr. Victor Ferreira, President of Ferreira Insurance & Investment Concepts, TD Securities and the Portuguese Government for their role in helping realize our dream of a new elevator. We would like to sincerely thank all those that organized various fundraising initiatives and individual donors that contributed to our elevator fundraising goal.

Luso Snoezelen ExperienceThe Snoezelen experience engages and delights Luso participants who love going into the Snoezelen Room. The technology is a valuable asset when working with individuals with special needs. While facilitating self-control, autonomous discovery, communication and exploration; multi-sensory environments help reduce anxiety and agitation. The room offers gentle lighting, soothing sounds, relaxing smells and sensory touch. Learning and development is encouraged with interactive panels that stimulate the senses and support concepts such as colour matching, cause and effect and more. The beauty of Snoezelen is that there is no restriction when it comes to ability or age, meaning it can be enjoyed by everyone!

We are fortunate to have the opportunity to offer participants a Snoezelen experience as part of our Adult Day Program. Thanks to the generosity of the Government of Portugal, Toronto constructed a Snoezelen Room in 2009 and has since acquired two portable Snoezelen carts, enabling more participants to enjoy the experience at one time. Hamilton was equipped with a Snoezelen Room during construction of their new location at 760 Barton Street East, much to the delight of their program participants.

Luso Canadian Charitable Society is proud to offer Snoezelen experiences as part of our Adult Day Program.

Youth in ActionLuso Toronto would like to send a heartfelt thank you to Kelly, the niece of our Adult Day Program participant Jason. Although Kelly’s initial fundraising goal was $50, she was pleased to announce that she achieved double her goal, raising $100 for Luso! It is wonderful to see young people take action and make a difference in their community.

Volunteers Lend a Helping Hand at TorontoLuso is proud to say that every year we welcome volunteers in many roles. Whether individuals are volunteering in the Adult Day Program or in our Respite Facility, volunteering their time to maintain our building or volunteering at fundraisers and other events, Luso is fortunate and thankful to those who take time out of their busy schedules to lend a helping hand.

We are extremely grateful for all of the volunteers and students who help our organization year-round. We would like to especially thank those who consistently go above and beyond for our organization: Michelle Brandao who volunteers in the Day Program Monday through Friday, Isaura Carneiro for helping in the Day Program and volunteering countless hours to sew props and costumes for our participants, Luis Brasil for assisting us with organizing and setting up in our Centre and Cathy Ross for helping in the Day Program. Incredible support at our 2017 Holiday Celebration of Abilities was provided by Nicholas Ferreira, Kristine Tamayo and Nicole Marbella. Thank you to RBC Royal Bank for donating $500 in recognition of Vice-President Lena Barreto’s volunteer contribution to Luso.

The Charitable Bingo Program at the Dolphin Bingo Centre in Scarborough offers significant financial benefits to Luso and would not be possible without the countless hours this dedicated group of volunteers provide. We’d like to express a heartfelt thank you to Anna Kavals, Annette Haley, Doreen Britton, Ellen Yamasaki, Maureen Killeen, Stephanie Grattan and Jackie Jensen for their commitment to volunteering.

A sincere thank you once again to all of those that have volunteered their time to help our organization. Your efforts do not go unnoticed and we really appreciate your valuable support.

As President of the Luso Support Centre Hamilton, I am proud of the many accomplishments of this organization. We are active within the community, recognized providers of quality, diverse programming for individuals with varying levels of abilities and a leader in the delivery of innovative and creative supports and services. Hamilton has a great staff team, working creatively, committed to participants and families. They truly embody the values of ECHO programs - empowerment, culture, hope and opportunity.

A big thank you to our partners along the way, who have contributed to our Centre’s success and continue to do so. Valuing everyone’s unique personality is one of the daily goals at the Hamilton Centre. Through the Chalkboard Art Project, photography, drawing and poetry were combined to reveal distinct personality traits and the uniqueness of each participant. Staff created a personalized portrait using a chalkboard illustrating the interests and passion of each participant. The Open House Art Showcase was the highlight of the project. Families had the opportunity to view and appreciate the collective art, resulting in an overwhelming positive and emotional response.

Our desire to highlight the abilities of individuals living with disabilities and show the value they can bring to the community was achieved. When we appreciate individual uniqueness, we add value to the whole community.

Making JamAs part of our Life Skills Program, participants from our Echo Program learned how to make strawberry jam from scratch! This culinary task involved several steps, such as choosing a recipe, identifying necessary ingredients, creating a shopping list, shopping for groceries and finally preparing the jam. Participants were involved in various parts of the project according to their interests and abilities. This activity was a fun and delicious way of enhancing our participants’ life skills by promoting their independence, motivation and confidence in their abilities!

Tent Reading BuddiesSome of us like to read, while others prefer to listen. So, recognizing our participants’ need to practice reading and listening skills, we created a fun activity where they could do so while camping in a tent!

Participants thoroughly enjoyed sharing stories with friends and using their imagination to improve their reading and listening skills in a fun setting. The Echo Program knows that learning is more meaningful and effective when performed in a relaxed, creative environment.

We look forward to the next “Camping Day”!

Potato DayHave you ever brought a potato to work? We did! Echo Program participants were asked to bring a potato to the Life Skills’ Cooking Program. This fun, interactive activity reinforces the importance of responsibility, planning, involvement and execution. Two cooking teams prepared mashed potatoes and french fries, while our “judging committee” (comprised of participants) decided on a winner.

The end result of this project was not only delicious and fun but it allowed us to reflect on how these life skills are crucial to our daily lives!

The Magic of Disney on IceFor the second year in a row, Luso Hamilton participants had the opportunity to watch the Disney on Ice Show during March Break. This magical outing totally mesmerized them, providing multiple sensory experiences, the opportunity to enhance social skills and be involved in community events.

Visiting Fire Station 6Once again, Fire Station 6 gladly opened their doors to us for a visit. We started our day by walking to the station which provided us with some exercise while enjoying the great weather. At the station, participants were allowed inside a fire truck, checked the sirens, held the firehose and chatted with the firemen. It was a unique experience and we are thankful for the opportunity and kindness demonstrated by the firemen.

Enjoying Exercise OutdoorsDuring the warmer months we try to be outside as much as possible. Luso Hamilton is fortunate to have an exercise park nearby and we certainly make good use of it. It is a great alternative to our indoor gym and it allows our participants to enjoy being outdoors in the fresh air. It is a definite hit with our participants and we look forward to it during the summer!

Fun at Flying SquirrelOh, the wonders of a trampoline…many of us have at least one cheerful memory of a trampoline game as a child. Unfortunately, individuals living with disabilities are often excluded from recreational activities. One of our main goals at Luso Hamilton is to improve our participants’ quality of life and we do that by offering a variety of educational and recreational activities. We partnered with Flying Squirrel to provide a fun day of trampoline jumping! Thank you to the Flying Squirrel in Hamilton for supporting our cause and offering us discounted rates! It was an unforgettable experience!

Hamilton Art GalleryLuso participants enjoyed an outing to the Hamilton Art Gallery’s permanent exhibition featuring the work of Canadian Artist Kim Adams. Our participants enjoyed viewing and discussing her art, which included a 1960’s Volkswagen Bus with figurines and mixed media. Art is a form of communication as well as a learning tool. Through art, we can exemplify our feelings and portray our understanding of an object or theme. It can also be calming and/or help us focus. What a wonderful, creative day.

Mountain Lanes Bowling Strikes for LusoLuso Hamilton strives to provide many recreational activities throughout the year. We have found that bowling is a hit with our participants! As we bowl, we practice balance, strength, flexibility and general motor skills. Thank you to the owner of Mountain Lanes Bowling who gladly accommodated us by opening the lanes earlier so that we could bowl during Luso program hours!

Daly Family Acre Farm VisitDuring the summer we engage our participants in as many outdoor activities as possible. Thanks to the continuous generosity of the Daly Family, our Luso Hamilton participants had the opportunity to visit the Daly Family Acre Farm; feed the animals, drive a boat and tractor, eat delicious hot dogs and enjoy a special visit from the ice cream truck! We are extremely thankful for the effort that was put into this amazing visit and appreciate their kindness to our participants!

Little Ray’s Reptile ZooLuso Hamilton’s visit to Little Ray’s Reptile Zoo was very interesting and full of learning opportunities. The Zoo Keeper educated our participants about different animals, their food habits, where they live and how they interact in nature. Our participants also visited the animals up close, touched them and watched the Zoo Keeper feed the alligators. We would like to thank the Reptile Zoo’s team for accommodating their schedule and giving us a special discount to visit their zoo!

Touchdown with the Tiger CatsAs Luso Hamilton is within walking distance to Tim Hortons Field, the Hamilton Tiger Cats have kindly allowed us to watch several practices throughout their last season. We have a bunch of very enthusiastic Tiger Cats fans and it was a great opportunity for our program participants to meet their idols!

A Visit to the Pumpkin Patch at Dyment’s Market and BakeryThere is no better fall activity than picking your own pumpkins on a farm and some of our participants had the chance to do so! The farm owners prepared delicious cookies and apple cider for our participants to enjoy when they arrived! They explained how the farm works and what is grown before participants went to the pumpkin field and picked several pumpkins to bring back to the Centre to carve with the help of the others. Thank you to the farm for treating us to a fun fall outing!

Jason’s Pizza PartyJason, a long-time friend of Luso, won a contest from Hamilton Radio Station Y108 and asked the station to donate a Pizza Party to our Luso Hamilton participants. In a true act of kindness, Y108 agreed to provide pizza to our participants and Jason delivered it to everyone in the program! Thank you to Y108 and Jason for your willingness to give and share with our participants!

A Visit with Hamilton Mounted PoliceThis summer, the Hamilton Mounted Police Unit (HMP) accepted our invitation to visit our program and show us their community involvement. This special day started with a walk to the park followed by a picnic lunch. To our delight, an HMP officer arrived at the park with his horse Griffin, giving our participants a chance to pet him and have their pictures taken! Afterwards, the officer and Griffin, walked back to the Centre with us, so that participants unable to visit the park could have the same wonderful opportunity to interact.

We are grateful for this visit and we sincerely thank the HMP for their kindness. It was an unforgettable experience!

Music Day with RobinLuso Hamilton’s friend Robin is a fantastic guitar player who loves to share his passion!

Our participants love music and dancing and were thrilled to have Robin perform live at our Centre. Everybody moved to the beat and our dance party was a hit. Many thanks to Robin for sharing his talents with us and we look forward to planning your second performance at Luso Hamilton!

Travelling to OttawaTravelling provides social interaction, cultural enhancement and some much-needed time away from our daily routines.

Last May, Luso Hamilton organized a fun trip to Ottawa during the Victoria Day long weekend with the support of Hamilton’s Portuguese Community, Luso Board Members, staff and families. One of the highlights of the trip was the Thousand Island Cruise which offered breathtaking views! Individuals living with disabilities and their families seldom have the opportunity to travel and escape from normal routines and responsibilities. This trip allowed caretakers to spend time with other families that share the same experiences, creating a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. This was a successful activity that is sure to be repeated in the near future!

Celebrating 14 Years! We celebrated the 14th Anniversary of the Echo Program last March with many cheers and much gratitude! There was a sense of belonging as families, participants and staff had the opportunity to interact and share past experiences. The event was generously supported by the Portuguese Community in Hamilton which provided monetary donations and raffle prizes and auctioned at the event.

Our sincere thank you to the Anniversary Planning Committee for their passion and commitment to our organization! We would also like to acknowledge our consistent sponsors that make our daily goals achievable and impact the lives of so many through their financial support. The event raised over $9,000 and the proceeds will directly support the Echo Program.

Visit from Government of Azores and Casa dos Açores RepresentativesIn September we had the pleasure of receiving a visit from 30 representatives from the Government of Azores and the Casa dos Açores, a cultural organization in Toronto. This visit was organized as part of the Casa dos Açores’ World Summit which took place in Toronto. Among the dignitaries in attendance were Dr. Rui Bettencourt, Regional Secretary of External Relations Presidency and Dr. Paulo Teves, Azorean Communities Regional Director.

The Government of Azores has been a consistent supporter of the cultural activities offered by this organization and we were honoured to have them visit our Centre! As a gesture of appreciation, the participants of the Echo Program made Inukshuk stone statues and offered them to our visitors as gifts.

Dia das Amigas Friendship DinnerEach year on the first Saturday of February, Luso Hamilton hosts “Dia das Amigas” Friendship Dinner. The event continues to grow with approximately 500 ladies attending our 2017 event. The Dinner provides ladies with the opportunity to nurture long-time friendships (or cultivate new ones) while enjoying a delicious meal. The diverse cultural backgrounds this event brings together provides a perfect combination of life experiences and community solidarity! Many thanks to the ladies supporting this fundraising initiative and for helping us to raise over $20,000! This is an important event for Luso Hamilton and we strongly appreciate such great community support!

Hamilton Annual Dinner DanceOn November 12, Luso Hamilton once again experienced the overwhelming support of local business and friends with more than 300 guests in attendance at our Annual Dinner Dance. Our gratitude to the Luso Hamilton Board of Directors who volunteered their time, energy and financial resources to make this event a success!

The dinner was an opportunity to raise awareness about Hamilton’s ongoing campaign to raise funds for the purchase of an accessible vehicle for the Echo Program. With more than $22,000 raised at the event, we are very close to our goal of allowing every participant to engage in community activities outside of the Centre.

Our sincere thank you to every sponsor, family and friend who contributed to the evening’s success.

Friends of Crowbar’s Malassadas FundraiserWhen people share a belief and work together to achieve a common goal, outstanding results are obtained. For the second year in a row, a group of ladies got together after work for several weeks to make and sell traditional Portuguese donuts called Malassadas. Their passion, motivation and hard work raised an incredible $5,000 for our Program!

We have no words to express our gratitude. Friends of Crowbar; your dedication is an outstanding example of community support and we thank you for helping us to overcome obstacles!

Saint Michael Archangel BrotherhoodWe would like to recognize the creativity and willingness of the Portuguese Brotherhood. During the holidays, the Saint Michael Archangel Brotherhood put up a Christmas tree and asked the community for donations. The community’s generosity and the proceeds from the sale of Portuguese sausages, wines and raffle items were donated to Luso Hamilton.

We are thankful for the support of the Portuguese Community in Hamilton; they are an integral part of our success!

Festival of FriendsOur participants are very creative and talented when it comes to craftsmanship! Handiwork projects are valued activities that enhance motor skills, self-esteem and encourage teamwork. For three years in a row, the Echo Program has been a part of the “Festival of Friends” – a yearly Summer Cultural Event in Hamilton that provides our participants with the opportunity to proudly display and sell their crafts to raise funds for our organization. This event is an excellent opportunity to showcase abilities and build community involvement and awareness.

Congratulations to our talented and artistic participants of the Echo Program!

Volunteers at Luso HamiltonWe would like to thank all volunteers that helped to make 2017 a special year for Luso Hamilton. To those of you that help repair broken chairs and other furniture; replace light bulbs and fix electricity issues; install a new sink and repair water leaks, wall damages, paint; clean the snow or helped with other tasks; fix computers or other things at the Centre; helped at the Program or during outings with the participants; organized or helped at fundraising events, bake sales or others to raise funds; created extra activities outside program hours for our participants, or helped with office tasks, a big THANK YOU! The expertise and time that you brought enhanced our Programs and helped us move forward our mission to serve the community. Our sincere appreciation for all your contributions!

Making Change Happen - Spotlight on Joe BotelhoJoe Botelho has been involved with Luso Hamilton since 2008. He serves as President of Luso Support Centre Hamilton and also as a Director on the Board of Luso Canadian Charitable Society.

Joe has made a valuable contribution to the success of our organization, with his dedication, hard work and commitment. He is an advocate for our participants and the work of the organization. Constantly sourcing out supporters for the continued growth of our programs and services, he is tireless in his pursuit of sponsors and donors, to ensure fundraising events are successful and long term goals are achieved.
