Dear Alumni & Friends,

What a blessing it is to serve as chair of the UNA Foundation Board of Directors, especially during the year we completed our fi rst offi cial comprehensive campaign. It is due to the generosity of donors like you that we not only reached our campaign goal, but exceeded it, in less time than predicted. Every single gift is important, regardless of the amount. On behalf of our board members, I want to sincerely thank each of you for your support of the University of North Alabama. Raising $36.7 million is a feat of which we are very thankful.

The Board of Directors places a priority on the stewardship of your funds. We have an investment committee made up of several active and retired fi nancial professionals and a very experienced fi nancial team in the Offi ce

of Advancement. They, along with our investment/management fi rm, all work together to provide expertise and transparency in how our funds are invested and spent. Our goal is the same – to raise money to assist the University of North Alabama in reaching its full potential in leading it to be the best choice a high school student can make to begin their college career.

Our work is not done. We will continue to reach all those who care about UNA’s success, and will ask for your continued support. Together, we can reach levels of excellence not previously imagined.

Thank you again for your support this past year.

VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Dear UNA Family,

Thank you! Thank you for your donations and your support of the University of North Alabama. UNA concluded the campaign it began in the fall of 2013 with a special announcement made this past spring – the goal was exceeded by raising over $36 million. This effort was reached in only fi ve and a half years, less time than we had planned, thanks to those who were willing to provide funds toward enhancing our University. Those funds came in the form of student scholarships, endowments, faculty support, research and capital improvements, as well as other areas. The entire campaign resulted in 7,498 individuals donating.

Particular projects benefi tting from the campaign included Laura M. Harrison Hall, the new nursing facility, scheduled for completion within the next two years. This gift was made possible by Laura and Don Harrison of Cincinnati, Ohio. Laura was a 1955 graduate. Her death this year was one of the University’s most heartbreaking losses. It will house the Anderson College of Nursing and Health Professions. We also experienced the naming of the Mitchell Burford Science and Technology Building, named for the late Dr. Burford, a generous long-time supporter of UNA. Several professorships were established, as well as numerous scholarships.

Gifts and pledges for the 2017-2018 year totaled $12,673,900, made by 2,667 donors collectively. This represents a fi nancial increase over the year before of an astonishing 45 percent.

The second annual Day of Giving event was held November 2017 in which $115,600 was raised through social media efforts within a 24-hour period. This represents a signifi cant increase of the year before ($41,800), a 176% positive difference.

UNA Derby Day was held May of 2018, which drew almost 300 people interested in not only watching the Kentucky Derby, but assisting in raising over $77,760 for unrestricted giving at

Dr. Deborah Shaw ’82

the University, to help fund student, faculty, and campus needs.

Regarding the UNA Foundation, total assets under management at the end of the fi scal year were $39.2 million. Twelve new endowments, including scholarships and professorships, were established this year. Combining all endowment monies with the Foundation and University results in over $39.15 million.

I am grateful for an outstanding Board of Directors of the UNA Foundation, which consists of 35 volunteers who bring impressive experience and enthusiasm to lead our University to higher levels of excellence. Our chair, Harry Smith ’64, provides strong leadership to our board, and never fails to make decisions made in the best interest of our University. He has served as a friend and mentor to me, and with much admiration, I thank him sincerely for the countless number of days he has freely given to support the University of North Alabama.

DUSTIN LEE PHILLIPSSENIOR | COLLABORATIVE EDUCATION, ELEMENTARY EDUCATION AND SPECIAL EDUCATION

“I have an older brother, he’s 27 and he has Down Syndrome.” For University of North Alabama senior, Dustin Lee Phillips, that statement has truly shaped his life.

Phillips is set to graduate in December with a degree in collaborative education, which combines elementary education and special education. However, his on-the-job training started when he was just five.

“My entire life I’ve been engaged with special needs classrooms. Since the age of five, I have been an advocate for my brother, because when he was younger he wasn’t able to speak on his own.”

Phillips said when his brother Chad was born, doctors told his parents that not only would he not be able to speak, but he also wouldn’t be able to walk or function on his own. Thankfully that wasn’t the case, as Chad began being verbal in the 8th grade.

However, an incident that occurred when Chad was five is what prompted Phillips to choose his current career path.

“When Chad was 5-years old, he was abused at school. So, eventually I became Chad’s voice, because I was also at the same school,” Phillips said.

“The reason why I chose special education is because I know what it’s like to have a sibling with special needs. I understand the parent’s aspect of it, making sure that their child is safe, but I also understand what needs there are to be met for the child. A lot of times we think children can’t learn and that’s completely false.”

Those experiences led Phillips to choose the special education path, which he said would allow him to be an advocate, to put effective practices in so that all children have the opportunity to learn and then to also bring awareness to what needs to change in the field.

Interestingly enough, Phillips’ brother Chad was the first in the family to graduate high school, while Phillips himself will be the first in his immediate family to graduate with a college degree. That’s not to say there wasn’t hard work taking place in his home; Phillips said his dad worked three jobs so his mother would be able to stay home with his brother Chad.

“For the first eight years of my life, she was a stay-at-home mom,” Phillips said.

“Then she got a job. So, when my dad was working three jobs, my mom would pick us up on her lunch break and take us to my dad’s other job and we’d sit in the parking lot for about two hours, he’d take us to get something to eat and then go home. I’d take care of Chad and my dad would go to his other job. That was when I was eight. So, I had to mature at a very young age.”

Phillips’ brother made him mature faster, but he also had an effect on the university Phillips would choose to attend.

“My parents wanted me to go to Alabama. It was my mom’s dream for me to go to Alabama so she could look at Nick Saban, which was what she always told me!

“But I was in Boy’s State and had the privilege of being a delegate for my high school and got to visit Alabama. I realized the campus wasn’t for me, because it was too large. Plus I can’t leave Chad; I’m a brother first.”

Phillips said he chose UNA because the campus was large enough that if he didn’t want to see the same faces he wouldn’t have to, but it was small enough that he felt he could thrive.

“It’s community-based and everybody here is family.”Phillips said he’s been lucky enough to have had several

scholarships throughout his time at UNA, which have been instrumental in him being able to attend school.

“My parents went into a lot of debt having to care for my brother Chad and we still have that problem today,” Phillips said. “For me not to have that burden with school, it’s been a huge blessing.”

Phillips said he plans to stay in the area when he graduates and while teaching is in his immediate future, he has bigger plans.

“My life goal is to open a facility, specifically for adults 21 and older and I want to name it the Chadwick Center. It would be a foundation run specifically to advocate for specials needs and give those with special needs an opportunity,” he said.

Phillips also happens to have experience in that realm as well. He is the creator of the Lion Buddies on campus, which is very similar to the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization. Phillips said that when a special needs student turns 21 they age out of the school system and there are very few options available. His program finds students on campus to match up with the special needs adults and they attend events, have movie nights, etc.

“We try to have fun with them and give them something to do, because that population is often forgotten.”

It’s clear to see that Phillips is mature beyond his years and has a drive that comes from his experiences and a goal to help as much as he can. Phillips said it best himself.

“I’m a brother first, an advocate, and then a teacher. That’s the way I look at it.”

“I’m a first generation immigrant from Colombia/Venezuela, so that’s why being a lawyer interests me so much. Spanish is my first language, which is one of the reasons why I chose to double major because I wanted to be able to continue to use it professionally.”

For University of North Alabama senior Marianna “Valentina” Sayago, majoring in Spanish seemed like a logical move. As for the political science degree and law future, that was apparently in her genes.

“I’ve always been a very argumentative person,” said Sayago.

Sayago said beyond that, she’s always loved history and English. Because of that, she chose to take AP courses in high school. One course, AP Language, required an

MARIANNA VALENTINA SAYAGO

argumentative writing course. Sayago said the teacher who taught the course, was also the debate teacher.

“So, I took debate that year and I really enjoyed it,” she said. “It was different than I expected, because it’s really about building a case, facts-wise and not whether you agree or not, but being able to argue from either point of view. I found that really interesting and it made me sure that that’s what I wanted to do.”

When Sayago came to UNA, she originally chose to major in criminal justice. That quickly changed when she took a political science course, which she said she enjoyed more.

“Politics have always interested me; I think that comes from home. So, I’ve always had that passion,” she said.

However, UNA wasn’t always the plan. Sayago said she had originally wanted to attend a bigger school until she visited UNA during a preview day. That’s when she met Dr. Leah Graham, an associate professor in political science, who told her about the program and the mock trials.

“It just really made me want to come here, because it all seemed super interesting,” she said.

Add in the small classroom sizes, the connection to faculty and close proximity to home, and Sayago was hooked. She also received a scholarship, which according to her has been extremely helpful.

“I’ve been really blessed that my parents have been able to help me, but realistically any additional money is helpful. I don’t think I understood just how helpful until I was fundraising for my sorority. So being able to see how much it can really help, I think donating to UNA would be something I’d be interested in, if I could afford it,” she said.

And to top it all off, Sayago is graduating early this December.

After hearing her story, it’s clear to see that Sayago benefitted from interaction. A professor’s word here, encouragement to apply for a scholarship there. That attention to detail and the student interaction is what sets UNA apart.

According to Victoria Moore, a couple of factors played into her choosing UNA. There was, of course, her affinity for nursing. Her alma mater, Sparkman High School, was also home to a medical academy that allowed students to learn the foundation of nursing. Therefore, the idea of going to a prominent nursing school like UNA seemed like a logical next step.

Then there was the proximity to her hometown of Huntsville. It never hurts to be close to family.

Nevertheless, the strongest factor may have been Col. Ray Atencio and UNA’s ROTC program.

“I actually met Col. Atencio before I started at UNA,” said UNA senior Victoria Moore. “He promised he’d work to get me a scholarship, which made my family really happy,” she said.

VICTORIA MOORE

Moore said she was a part of Junior ROTC at Sparkman and wanted to continue that tradition in college, which UNA allowed her to do.

Nursing on the other hand, Moore said, is a relatively common dream.

“Nursing is one of those things that every girl says she wants,” she said. “But once I started working with patients, I really saw this as something I could do for my career.”

Being in nursing and ROTC, Moore has to stay very disciplined. She wakes up early each day to make it to 5:45 a.m. physical training. Moreover, sometimes she does without the traditional student luxuries.

“I tell people it’s all about prioritizing and sacrificing. That means giving up Netflix and giving up going out sometimes, but you just have to prioritize.”

Adding a job to that mix would make anyone balk, which is why Moore said she is thankful for the scholarships and stipends she receives. However, the scholarships only lasted for three years, which left Moore without a scholarship in her final semester of school.

“This is actually my last semester, so I graduate in December,” Moore said. “I only got a three-year ROTC nursing scholarship and that ended this past May. So, I really needed a way to pay for school this last semester and this latest scholarship was right on time!”

As mentioned, Moore is on track to graduate this December. Once she commissions and graduates, Moore said all commissioned nursing cadets do medical/surgical nursing, which is very general.

“Once I reach the rank of captain I can choose a specialty, and I’m really interested in ICU nursing,” Moore said laughing. “Even for me it sounds intimidating coming out of my mouth!”

And she hopes to one day give back to the University that gave to her.

“Hopefully, I’ll be responsible with my finances, and I’ll be able to save up,” Moore said.

“I love UNA. I hear people say all the time ‘UNA has my heart,’ but for me it really does. So, I would love to give back to UNA, because I know how much the programs here have blessed and mentored me.”

BROOKE LYLESSOPHOMORE | SPANISH AND SECONDARY EDUCATION

Brooke Lyles is a sophomore at UNA studying Spanish and Secondary Education. Did we mention she’s also on the softball team and in the Honors College? We sat down with her to discuss UNA, scholarships and the future.

What’s your name and year?My name is Brooke Lyles and I’m a sophomore.

What is your major?I’m a Spanish and Secondary Education major.

Is the goal to teach Spanish when you graduate?I want to teach Spanish, but I also want to do a million things. I kind of want to do mission work over the summers and do medical translation for disaster relief, and anything else they’ll let me do. Just travel the world. And then I want to teach and coach during the year.

Have you been on any mission trips before?I’m taking my first one next summer to Mexico!

You play on the UNA Softball team, what’s your position?

I play catcher. It’s tough, but it’s super fun. I was not on the championship team, but I was a redshirt when we won the Gulf South Conference last year. So I’ll be a freshman on the field this year.

What brought you here?I committed for softball when I was a junior in high school. I didn’t know anything about UNA before that, but my mom made me go to a camp and I ended up falling in love.

What was it about UNA? I felt at home. I visited several other schools, and I just felt like it was more of a business. We actually saw President Kitts on campus on our visit; he walked over and greeted us, and my jaw dropped! So I felt at home and that everyone was going to invest in me when I got here.

Has UNA turned out to be what you thought it would?Yes, all that and more. I love UNA. I’m the biggest advocate now!

You’re an athlete, a student and in the Honors College; how do you find the time for all of it?

It’s not bad, I juggled a lot in high school. It’s a lot to handle, but it’s something about which I’m passionate. I want to make sure I’m well rounded. I don’t want to just be an athlete, just a student, just a sorority girl or whatever.

And you’re a LaGrange member and a SOAR counselor?I don’t sleep much! It’s fun; I have a passion for UNA.

Do you think you’d be able to be as involved as you are at another institution?

Oh, absolutely not. I always had a dream that I wanted to play SEC ball. Now, I realize I can be used in other ways and not just be an athlete. I can be an example on campus and help serve others and show them there’s more to people than what’s on the surface.

Clearly, we can see that you already want to give back, but how important are your scholarships?

It’s important because I don’t want to put that pressure on my parents. They told me that they’d help me out as much as they could, but they raised me to be independent. My mom worked hard and had her education paid for through scholarships, so I wanted to do the same. I guess I just don’t want to put that stress on anybody else and just know that I did it by myself.

HANNAH KENTSENIOR | ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE

Hannah Kent is a senior at UNA, who also happens to be a scholarship recipient. We sat down with her to discuss the impact it has had on her life and future.

Where are you from?Vina, Alabama. It’s a very small town. We have a stop sign and no red light. There is a little gas station and then the school. It’s literally like 5 minutes from Red Bay, which is the big city!

What is your major?I’m a double major in accounting and finance.

How did you get around to accounting and finance?Well it’s kind of funny, when I was in high school I always wanted to be a pharmacist. That was the whole goal. Then I took my first accounting class in the 10th grade and I loved it, and I knew that was what I wanted to do. I did not plan to double major in finance; I had actually wanted to minor in it. However, it was actually going to take me longer to minor than to double major.

Would you rather do accounting or finance? It’s funny; I started out doing the finance just to do it. I thought I wouldn’t do much with it, but it would look good that I had it. I thought that up until this semester, and now I’m thinking I really like finance, but I actually have an internship with an accounting firm. I guess it depends on whatever field wants me! But I do plan on getting my CPA regardless.

So what brought you to UNA?I support myself pretty much solely. My mom helps where she can, but she can’t afford all of my tuition. I knew I’d have to work hard and do what I could and UNA was a great option. Plus it was closer. I have a younger brother and I didn’t want to be too far from him. I love it here!

Do you work?I do, I currently do payroll for a company in Tuscumbia.

How hard is it to work and go to school? It’s extremely stressful. It would be so nice if I could just go home and study, and not have to worry about going to work. Then again, I wouldn’t take anything for it because it makes me appreciate what I do have a lot more.

Therefore, along those lines, you’re a scholarship recipient. Does it make a difference?

Oh it does; it really helps. If I didn’t have my scholarships, I would have to work ten times more to cover those costs. I try to be prepared and save up, but then little things in life come up!

Do you think you’ll be more philanthropic later in life? When I get older and financially stable and I’m at that point where I can give back, I will. I know how hard it is to struggle; I’ve always had to work for everything I’ve received. I’ve never been able to just go tell my mom I need money; we’ve always had to save and work for it. I know how hard it is for those kids to make it and I’d like to take the burden off of them like these people have for me.

24 University of North Alabama 25 2017 - 18 Annual Giving Report

IS YOUR NAME MISSING?

The Honor Roll of Donors contains names of individuals who have made gifts to the University of North Alabama between October 1, 2017, and September 30, 2018. There could be several reasons that your name does not appear in what you believe to be the appropriate giving level—or not at all:

1. You made your gift either before October 1, 2017, or after September 30, 2018.

2. You gave more during this period than you realize: your name may be in the next giving level.

3. You made a pledge instead of an outright gift. If you made a pledge between October 1, 2017, and September 30, 2018, but chose to begin fulfilling it after September 30, 2018 , your name will not appear in this honor roll, which reflects only gifts received.

4. If you are a corporate sponsor for Athletics and are recognized through advertisement opportunities.

5. You paid your Sportsman’s Club membership dues after January 1, 2018. Under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (H.R.1), athletic contributions in exchange for the right to purchase tickets or preferred seating at a college or university athletic event cannot be counted as a charitable contribution.

If we omitted your name in error, we would like to hear from you. If you have questions or corrections, contact the Office of Donor Relations and Prospect Management at 256.765.4861.
