Nancy Ricard :: BURSARY AND AWARD RECIPIENT
Financial support just in timeNancy Ricard faced exceptional personal and fi nancial challenges while working towards her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing at BCIT.
A single mother of four children, Nancy’s education was completely funded by federal and provincial loans. Financial pressures and the need to take care of her children motivated her to apply for a bursary in January 2006.
Soon after she applied, her children’s father was tragically killed in a fi re that burned down their family home in Whitehorse.
“By March 1, I had less than $1,000 to live on after I had covered all of my expenses with student loans,” said Nancy. “I became very ill and needed medical care. I had to seriously consider quitting school in order to get a job and support my family.”
BCIT came through just in time. Three donor-funded bursaries enabled Nancy to provide for her family while working towards her degree.
“BCIT’s fi nancial support was directly instrumental to my being able to continue school instead of quitting to fi nd work to support my family. Thank you for your kindness.”
Nancy completed her degree with honours in December 2006, and has successfully embarked on her chosen career – she is now a full-time nurse at the Langley Public Health Unit.

Don Enns :: ENNS FAMILY ENDOWMENT
Achievement awards inspire excellenceBeyond serving as a BCIT Foundation director, Don Enns wanted to do something for students that would make a lasting difference.
“I particularly wanted to help mature students,” says Don. “It takes courage and commitment to come back to school to learn a new skill or complete a credential when you have to balance a family and work life as well.”
In fact, many BCIT students do not come directly from high school. In the School of Health Sciences, 87 per cent of our students have taken post-secondary education at another institution and many are already burdened with post-secondary debt before coming to BCIT.
An endowment to fund student awards is a great fi nancial help to students, and at the same time recognizes their achievements at BCIT Awards Ceremonies.
Don established the Enns Family Endowment to support students in the joint UBC/BCIT Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Biotechnology. The fi ve-year program combines UBC and BCIT practical training and expertise, and attracts some of the brightest science students. The Enns Family Endowment will provide fi rst-year achievement awards for the top students who complete their fi rst year at BCIT.
As President & Chief Executive Offi cer of CANTEST Ltd., Don knows how important these high calibre graduates are to the Life Sciences fi eld.
“In this fi eld, you never stop learning,” says Don.
When you establish an
endowment at BCIT, your
gift is invested as capital and
the annual interest generated
is allocated to help BCIT
students in perpetuity. An
endowment allows you to
contribute as much and as
often as you like. An Endowed
Fund Agreement providing
administrative details will
be prepared for you, and an
income tax receipt will be
issued for your donation.

inspired to create a legacy . . .
The Fingarsons have initiated a tradition of asking family and friends to contribute to their “BCIT endowment piggy bank” rather than bringing them a gift on special occasions.
“Our best memories
Pat and Lorne Fingarson each devoted more than two decades of their professional lives to BCIT. Their shared memories – and their continued strong ties to BCIT – inspired the couple to establish an endowment to help students.
The Fingarson – Parliament Endowment will provide bursaries and awards to students in the Marketing Management – Entrepreneurship program in BCIT’s School of Business.
An entrepreneur who was attracted to BCIT’s hands-on educational approach, Lorne began his BCIT career as an instructor in the School of Business. He was instrumental in launching the Venture Program, which provides entrepreneurial skills training to establish and operate a business.
Pat Fingarson (nee Parliament) started at BCIT as an auxiliary staff member in 1977, when she was a single mother of four children. Over the years, she worked in many different roles at BCIT, including executive assistant to the President.
Pat met Lorne through a local political committee in 1978 and discovered they shared a passion for politics and a commitment to BCIT. Over the years, seven of their eight adult children in the blended Fingarson – Parliament family attended classes or worked at BCIT.
“BCIT means a great deal to our family,” says Pat. “So far, three of our family members have graduated from BCIT.”
Most recently, Deb Parliament graduated with a Bachelor of Technology degree in Construction Management with honours, was privileged to be nominated for the Lieutenant Governor’s Award, and won the 2007 Stantec Consulting Award for Bachelor of Technology in Construction Management.
Bruce Fingarson is a graduate of Robotics and Automation. He also taught in the program, set up the Robotics lab, and sat on the accreditation board.
Kim Morden (nee Fingarson) graduated with a Diploma in Administrative Management Technology with honours, and was a student in the fi rst classes to use personal computers for their course work.
The Fingarsons have initiated a tradition of asking family and friends to contribute to their “BCIT endowment piggy bank” rather than bringing them a gift on special occasions. Last Christmas, generous family and friends donated an additional $1,900 to the fund.
“At this stage in our lives, we don’t need more things,” says Pat. “We’d rather see the endowment grow and help more students.”
Did you know that friends
and family can make gifts to
your endowment? Donors
may give at any time through
the BCIT Foundation and
receive a charitable tax
receipt. Endowments provide
a permanent source of
income for your bursary or
award. The principal of these
funds remains intact. Only
the income is used, thus the
fund lasts indefi nitely and
provides ongoing support
for BCIT students. Additional
contributions, in any amount,
are always welcome.

Students in the Automation and Instrumentation program will have a new process measurement lab, thanks to Endress+Hauser’s generous $200,000 multi-year gift.
The program is well supported by industry, but this contribution tips the scales. The gift will allow the Automation and Instrumentation program to completely redevelop one of its major lab facilities. The new lab will consist of six student workstations, each equipped with the latest in process measurement and control equipment, allowing much more effi cient operation of the lab than in the past.
“This is an incredible opportunity for BCIT to partner with an industry leader in the process measurement fi eld,” said John Schoonover, Program Head. “Our students will benefi t from exposure to a wider range of measurement systems than previously available and will have access to the latest technology.”
The fi rst portion of the donation consists largely of process measurement equipment such as high-end sensors and fl ow, level, temperature and pressure measurement instruments. Future portions of the donation are expected to focus on asset management software and wireless measurement technologies.
Endress+Hauser is one of the world’s leading suppliers of measuring instruments and automation solutions for the industrial process engineering industry.

A gift from the BC Securities Commission has helped to create Canada’s fi rst Advanced Specialty Certifi cate program in Securities Fraud Analysis.
Financial analysis professionals from as far as Saudi Arabia have expressed interest in BCIT’s online program which is scheduled to begin in September 2007.
“BCIT’s partnership with the BC Securities Commission in launching this program will equip fi nancial analysts with the skills required to detect fi nancial fraud in a timely manner, thereby minimizing direct economic loss, retaining investor confi dence and strengthening the global economy,” said Stephen Hollander, Program Coordinator. “We are grateful for the Commission’s support in this initiative.”
“Fraud victims lose much more than just their money,” said Wayne Redwick of the BC Securities Commission. “They lose their confi dence, self-esteem and more. One of our key goals at the BC Securities Commission is to disrupt, stop and prevent fraud. We believe BCIT’s Securities Fraud Analysis program can play an important role in our fi ght against investment fraud.”
The BC Securities Commission is the independent provincial government agency responsible for regulating securities trading in British Columbia through the administration of the Securities Act.

Advisor with PCL Constructors Westcoast Inc. meets with BCIT carpentry students.
Trades training in British Columbia received a much-needed boost, thanks to PCL Constructors Westcoast Inc.’s (PCL) substantial gift of $500,000 to support construction trade students at BCIT.
Nearly 300 construction trade students were on hand in BCIT’s carpentry courtyard in September 2006 to thank PCL for its gift, given as part of the company’s centennial year celebration. The PCL gift has been divided into two parts: $420,000 to increase the number of trades people trained in BC over the next three years, and $80,000 to create an endowment for student achievement awards.
“British Columbia is currently facing the largest shortage of skilled trades people in recent history,” said Anibal Valente, Vice-President and District Manager, PCL Constructors Westcoast Inc. “In order to help sustain both the short and long-term viability of this important industry, PCL Constructors Westcoast Inc. is taking a leadership role and making a major gift to support the next generation of trades people in Western Canada.”
“PCL is entirely employee-owned,” said John English, Dean of BCIT’s School of Construction and the Environment, “so the people their gift will help train today, could very well be the owners of PCL tomorrow.”
BCIT is the largest trades training institution in BC, providing the majority of apprenticeship training in the province.

More than 115,000 students have graduated from BCIT since 1964, most of whom are living and working in British Columbia.
Life in British Columbia would not be the same without the career contributions of our graduates. In health care, construction, business, manufacturing, computing, transportation – in virtually every aspect of our daily lives – BCIT graduates are involved.
That’s why the BCIT Alumni Association believes supporting BCIT students is so important.
“BCIT has had a tremendous impact on my life,” says Alumni Association President Adam Pion, Financial Management ‘94 and Director, UBS Bank (Canada). “I want to stay involved with BCIT and help to ensure it continues to fl ourish. Most of all, I want to help students access the opportunities that I’ve benefi ted from.”
Each year, the Alumni Association makes a leadership gift to the BCIT Alumni Association Scholarship and Bursary Endowment. This support, along with gifts from many generous alumni and friends, has grown the endowment to more than half a million dollars. Interest from the fund has provided scholarships and bursaries to 565 grateful students, and the endowment will continue to help students pursue their studies at BCIT for years to come.

Phil Henderson, former manager of the BCIT Student Association from 1971 to 1987, is well known for his commitment to community service and BCIT students.
In his role at the Student Association, Phil pioneered campus activities and events that have benefi ted and inspired generations of students. Through his love of sport, he brought squash and racquetball to BCIT, and also personally fi nanced the intramural games.
Phil’s calendar was always crammed with volunteer commitments with agencies like Meals on Wheels, Girl Guides of Canada and St. Leonard’s Youth and Family Services Society.
Last year, Phil established another legacy at BCIT – the Phil Henderson Community Service Award Endowment, to support a graduating achievement award for a technology student who has demonstrated exceptional community service at BCIT or the community at large. He and his late wife Vivian also left matching bequests to BCIT.
“After working at BCIT for 18 years, I developed a strong appreciation for the philosophy of the school,” said Phil of his dedication to the Institute. “BCIT offers education in a very sensible manner that Vivian and I admired.”
Phil has infl uenced the lives of so many. He built close relationships during his years at BCIT, and to this day has maintained friendships with several former students. In 2005, Phil received the BCIT Distinguished Service Award.

Education Training Solutions, Honeywell, Adrian Paull, Vice President, Customer
and Product Support, Honeywell, Russ Schultz, Director, Training
Solutions, Honeywell and Lane Trotter, Dean, BCIT School of Transportation.
Since 2006, Honeywell Aerospace has made gifts totalling $3.1 million (US) in hardware and technical support, providing the latest generation of avionics digital technology – enabling BCIT to create a glass cockpit learning laboratory in the new Aerospace Technology Campus.
Glass cockpits are replacing the gauges, switches and indicators found in a traditional cockpit with sophisticated computerized display systems. The simplifi ed glass cockpit allows pilots to focus on only the most pertinent information.
This new laboratory will position the Institute as an international leader in the fi eld of avionics and a premier trainer in basic to advanced avionics systems, giving students a broader-based education.
“Honeywell’s investment in BCIT gives students the opportunity to experience, and fully understand, the latest technology which can improve fl ight safety, on-time performance and operational effi ciency,” said Lane Trotter, Dean of BCIT’s School of Transportation.
Honeywell Aerospace partners with BCIT

inspired to be the best . . .
BCIT soars to greater heights as it prepares for the grand opening of the new Aerospace Technology Campus (ATC) in the Fall of 2007.
The $80 million campus, on 12.2 acres at the gateway to the Vancouver International Airport, is a culmination of generous contributions from government, industry and the BCIT community.
The new campus promises to build upon BCIT’s established reputation as a leader in aerospace training in North America. The expansion and 300,000 square foot facility will enhance training and skills development, meet the industry’s need for skilled graduates, and foster applied research.
Key features of the new campus include 40 classrooms and smart labs equipped with wireless technology, a seminar room with global teleconferencing capabilities, and a spectacular 40,000 square foot hangar housing the BCIT fl eet of aircraft.
Partnership is at the heart of the new ATC. Together with its industry partners, BCIT has pushed the limits of education, exploring new ideas and meeting the challenges of industry with imagination. Visit bcit.ca for updates on upcoming ATC events and be sure to join us.

The new ATC Campus, under construction, is scheduled to open in the Fall of 2007.
Software and 3D model gifts valued at more than $2 million support a strategic partnership through BCIT’s Technology-Enabled Knowledge (TEK) initiative.
NGRAIN provides 3D visualization and simulation solutions for training and maintenance of complex equipment. The company’s products will be used by instructors and students to further enhance the quality of BCIT trades and technology curriculum.
The TEK initiative is a fi ve-year project to improve teaching and learning at BCIT through the strategic use of technology. As a result, BCIT students will be better prepared to enter the workforce with the most advanced skills.
NGRAIN’s interactive 3D technology is designed to meet face-to-face instruction needs as well as seamlessly support distributed learning. It is an ideal fi t for today’s polytechnic institutions, which focus on learning by doing as well as hands-on innovative, and collaborative instruction.
Using NGRAIN’s technology, BCIT students – in automotive, engineering, construction, and aerospace – will be able to practice and review equipment maintenance and repair procedures through 3D equipment simulations.
“Integrating 3D animation technology into the learning toolbox provides students and teachers with new ways of exploring information and brings excitement to the learning process that cannot be matched by traditional teaching methods such as text and PowerPoint slides,” said Paul Lindahl, NGRAIN’s President and CEO.
