ANNUAL GIVING REPORT | 2016-17 Portsmouth Christian Academy “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” – Romans 12:2 Romans 12 reminds us that if PCA graduates are to make a positive impact in the world, first and foremost, they have to be different from the world, not to conform to it. It is in this difference, brought about by mind-renewing transformation, where real impact can occur. I am so blessed to be able to sit in the cat-bird seat for observing transformational impact. As a parent of a sixth-grader who has been at PCA since preschool, I can tell you that PCA is not “same old-same old” as far as education is concerned. I have seen how faculty and staff are equipping my son to be tested, to be discerning, and ultimately to be transformed to make an impact. In my Advancement role, I see the evidence of PCA’s positive reach locally, nationally, and globally, and it fills me with gratitude. Near to home, this past year 250 volunteers contributed over 10,000 hours to PCA’s community. Their support made a big impact in prayer and worship, theatre, athletics, classrooms, fundraising, and more. I invite you to share in my sense of grateful provision as you read through this first Annual Giving Report. It tells stories of generosity and transformation as the PCA community comes together to impact the world for good. It tells a bigger story, if you read between the lines, of God’s provision as we partner to grow a legacy of faithfulness. “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

– Romans 12:2

Romans 12 reminds us that if PCA graduates are to make a positive impact in the world, first and foremost, they have to be different from the world, not to conform to it.

As a philanthropist, what matters most in my financial giving decisions? Mission, Vision, and Return on Investment! For this reason, I can truly say that I am honored to invest with you in Christ-centered graduates impacting the world for good! What a bold calling!

We live in a culture today that is not growing any fonder of the Christian worldview. Yet we know that the love and grace of God is the ONLY hope we have in transforming our world, one life at a time. By investing in this next generation of leaders, you and I are directly influencing the future of our country, and our world.

Over 36% of our students depend on tuition assistance, and many school resources would not exist without the gifts of key benefactors. From lab equipment and library books to the waterfront enhancement project and Creative Design Center to the Congo School Initiative—your generosity is helping develop the minds and hearts of future Christ-centered parents, employees, entrepreneurs, executives, and civic leaders.

Starting with the 2017-2018 academic year, Portsmouth Christian Academy’s Upper School students will have new opportunities to build on what they learn in the very popular Robotics class taught by Robotics and Programming Instructor (and IT Director) Michael Shevenell. A $4,000 gift from TURBOCAM International of Barrington, NH is the game-changer.

“This grant makes possible a significant expansion of our Robotics program, which will support both an academic class in Robotics theory and practice as well as a club level offering for those who have already taken the class,” explains Shevenell.

Through the addition of more equipment and supplies as well as a Robotics Club at the Upper School, PCA will be able to extend the program reach to a larger number of interested students; develop a competitive team; provide opportunities for students to develop leadership and other life skills; and expand the “robotics experience” to other math and science related classes.

Suzie Noronha, TURBOCAM’s Director of Charitable Giving and a PCA Board member, notes, “Turbocam is pleased to partner with PCA in supporting where both PCA’s mission and Turbocam’s mission intersect, in equipping young people to joyfully discover their gifts in preparation for lives of service and honoring God.”

TURBOCAM is a global turbomachinery development and manufacturing company that specializes in 5-axis machining of flowpath components.

Make an impact today! Donate online at pcaschool.org/giving

PCA proudly celebrates the Class of 2017, who were collectively awarded over $11 million in merit scholarships and accepted at 158 different colleges. Comprised of students from 21 different communities, three states, nine cities, and four countries, the class of 2017 was most notably characterized by the love shown for each other.

R E F L E C T I O N S F R O M V A L E D I C T O R I A N(Excerpts from Valedictorian Address)

PCA has had a huge influence in my life… and I know we would not be where we are today or headed towards the incredi-ble futures before us without the faculty and staff at PCA. Thank you, everybody at PCA, for helping me grow in my faith and career during my 13 years here…

…we are headed into a world where few come from the PCA background. It is our calling as Christians and PCA Alumni to protect those who don’t have a voice, not to judge, but to show the love of Christ…

PCA has given us everything we need to be defenders of our faith: some of us are creators, some of us are leaders, and some of us are givers or healers or world-changers… So now, in the words of Dr. Gamble, let us go forth, doing great and wonderful things.

C O N G R AT U L AT I O N S G R A D U AT E S ! HAAKON LUND (’17) PRESENTED EAGLE SCOUT AWARD

Last Spring, Haakon Lund (’17) was presented Boy Scouting’s highest award, the Eagle Scout Award. To be named an Eagle Scout, Haakon earned a total of 29 Merit Badges (8 more than required) including badges in Aviation, Finger Printing, Geology, Indian Lore, and Search and Rescue. He also had to complete a service project, which he decided to do for Portsmouth Christian Academy.

Haakon noticed that a wetland behind PCA had to be crossed by the soccer team to get to the fields, and by the cross country team when running. Being a safety issue, he constructed a bridge over the area, leading scouts and students in its design and construction, with a budget he raised of over $900.

Haakon is the 65th Eagle Scout from Troop 4 over the last 59 years of the troop. He is now studying biotechnology at North Dakota State University. Congratulations, Haakon!

The class of 2017 is remarkable in many ways. One of which is that there is a record number of graduates who have attended PCA for the past 13 years together—16 seniors in total! Ten of whom have been together since Preschool. Thank you to their parents for allowing them to attend PCA and for their commitment to our school for so many years.

The Golden Eagle award is given to a graduating senior who…demonstrates a triad of virtues. Academically, this student has been an honors or better student throughout high school, and has demonstrated a strong thirst for knowledge.

In the realm of good citizenship, the recipient has been a mainstay in the life of the school. The student’s life has been an example of dignity and respect for teachers, staff, and fellow students.

Lastly, the recipient must be a strong Christian whose life testifies to faith in God and desire to follow Him. The student demonstrates humility, love, and compassion.

The recipient of this year’s Golden Eagle award, Matthew Esthers, is a student who has maintained highest honors throughout high school. He has been fully engaged through Quiz Club, Debate Club, the Model UN Club, Bible Study, and as captain of our varsity tennis team.

Impressive as those accomplishments are, it is Matthew’s unshakable faith that sets him apart. Whether leading small groups or speaking at student-led chapels, he proclaims the name of Christ. If you want to know what a joy-filled Christian life looks like, spend five minutes with him. Matthew Esters is pursuing a major in business administration at Gordon College as a member of the Gordon Global Honors Program.

PCA Alumna (’98) Leanne Pellerin Answers the Question, “Why Do You Give?”

My husband, Brian, and I are blessed by Portsmouth Christian Academy at Dover and are happy to be able to, in return, bless the school a little through our donations. I was privileged to be a part of the first graduating class, and now our daughter is part of the class of 2020. PCA has exceeded our expectations in providing our daughter with a wonderful Christian-based education. She has been allowed to grow and thrive in ways that no public school would ever be able to match. She has been taught academics, Biblical truths, and life skills from faculty and staff that genuinely care for her and every student at the school. It brings me such joy to see her bedroom decorated with Bible verses, and to hear about how much she enjoys her AP classes and volleyball team.

We are confident in the ability of PCA at Dover to nurture our daughter’s mind and soul, and we know the school offers the same care and direction to all students. We plan to continue to invest in PCA and future students, even after our daughter has graduated. A donation to PCA is truly an investment in the future, since every student that goes through those doors has an opportunity for a better education and to discover their God-given abilities and talents.

P C A A L U M N I — Impacting the World for Good!Keri Dame (’05) completed the requirements for her PhD in Genetics this summer at Boston University, after publishing a paper describing her work on thyroid cell production. She has since relocated to Silver Spring, MD to work with the United States Food and Drug Administration.

Ross LaMontagne (’07) is working full time in Aircraft Maintenance and growing his relationship with God one day at a time.

Carine Umuhumuza (’07) achieved a journalism degree at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School in 2011. She now lives and works in Washington, DC as a digital communications manager for a growing media company and social enterprise. Her daily work involves finding fresh ways to forge innovative partnerships with donor agencies, companies and NGOs.

Through an “amazing, crazy and beautiful” ride, Nicole Chetsas (’10) has discovered her dream college at Hellenic in Boston where she is now studying Management/Leadership and Theology. She is also a part-time wedding photographer and works at Boys and Girls Club.

“Hi PCA – Lots happened recently, PCA. I just graduated UNH this December with a degree in music performance. In May 2016 I got married to my beautiful wife and we just found out that we will have a little baby around August! In the midst of all that excitement, God has been amazing. Much thanks and much love, “ Zach Silk (’11)

Isaac Moore (’11) graduated from Emerson College in 2015. An RFP Coordinator for Liberty Mutual, Isaac supports sales in their efforts to acquire new clients by answering brokers’ questions and working with the underwriting team to provide a competitive proposal for the customer. Isaac also is a member at New Frontiers Church in Portsmouth where he serves as a youth leader and a community group leader.

Alicia Vining (’15) made her debut as one of the on field ball girls for the Washington Nationals on March 31 when the Red Sox played the nationals.

Alicia Troinao, Class of 2011 – Where Are You Now? Where do you live now and how did you end up there? Currently I live in a small town in the Colorado Rockies, because I felt the need to leave the comfort of my previous job.

What are some of your big milestones since graduating from PCA? Going to college (Miami University of Ohio) … Studying abroad for a semester in St. Petersburg, Russia … Skydiving was pretty cool and… dancing in four shows in college when I had no prior dance experience.

What do you do for a living now? I work as a resident advisor at a ranch for high school students to earn academic credit and community service hours, while also partaking in things like square dancing, horseback riding, and hiking.

How did your time at PCA help you to pursue this? My time at PCA made me realize that I want a life of variety. I intentionally went to a college far from home and got involved in several cultural student organizations. I don’t know what I will pursue next, but I know that no experience is a waste of time.

22nd Annual Auction – March 18, 2017, at PCA Gymnasium

Four hundred bidders, ten sponsors, and 736 donated items made PCA’s 22nd Annual Auction the biggest yet! We are beyond grateful for the generosity on display, which brought in $137,185 to benefit the Tuition Assistance Program. The “Sponsor a Child” part of the program raised a record $55,018, and the Art Gallery brought in a high of $7,721!

“Eagles for Eagles” Golf Tournament – May 13, 2017, at The OaksForty-two golfers set their sights on a Hole-in-one, and while none drove away in a new Subaru Forrester, all left in good spirits with lots of fun prizes and full bellies from a BBQ lunch. Thanks to all who helped raise over $8,600 to support a sustainable future for PCA.

At the auction, Sam Mezey wins a security duty work day with Mr. Watson.

Thank you to the countless adult and student volunteers who made all of this possible!

In 2017, PCA was honored to receive a national grant award from The Christian Education Charitable Trust (CECT), a division of the Tennessee-based Maclellan Foundation, to fund an Environmental Stewardship Pilot Project. Through this $75,000 grant, PCA is leveraging its unique location on the Bellamy River to launch an innovative STEM program for monitoring the health of the waterfront.

“Because of this grant, PCA will be able to provide opportunities for students to engage in active STEM research and further unlock their potential as caretakers of our natural resources,” said Dr. John Engstrom, Head of School.

This project has two main components:

1. TRACKING OF NEGATIVE METRICS. Elevated nitrogen concentrations are highly detrimental to the Great Bay and its associated estuary. Students are now tracking nitrogen and other levels through monitoring stations established along the riverfront.

2. INTRODUCTION OF RESTORATIVE MEASURES. The oyster is a unique species which serves as a natural filtration system and monitor of coastal environmental health. PCA faculty and students are working together with partnering agencies to reintroduce healthy oyster beds into the Bellamy River and design a system for monitoring the health of the oyster population.
