Our 2016 Donors
T he purpose of the UHS Foundation
is to seek gifts that will enhance the
care of patients, manage those gifts
wisely and with good stewardship, and
provide grants for programs and services
at UHS that make a meaningful difference
in people’s lives. All three of these actions
combine to create the Foundation’s ongoing
mission and value.
This emphasis on giving, managing and
granting was especially evident throughout
2016, as gifts increased 5 percent over
the previous year, and our total earnings
exceeded $1.3 million. Our partners in
this endeavor are the residents of our
community, along with the UHS employees,
volunteers, board members and medical
staff, who so generously donate their time,
talent and treasure.
The year was bittersweet for the final
Women Fore Women Golf Classic, with the
culmination in September of the tournament
after 20 years. Over the past two decades,
more than $875,000 has been raised by the
event to support women’s healthcare.
Tournament funds enabled the purchase of
two machines for digital breast tomosynthe-
sis, making UHS one of the first facilities in
New York State to offer three-dimensional
mammography. Those who have participat-
ed in the classic since its inception have
made a tremendous impact on the lives of
thousands of women in our community.
I would like to extend a personal thank
you to all of our donors who supported the
Foundation during 2016. Our success is your
success. Investment in UHS is an investment
in the health and well-being of our wonderful

community. When you partner with us, you
have a positive impact on the delivery of
care as lives are changed for the better, one
patient encounter at a time.
I would also like to acknowledge the
UHS Foundation’s Board of Trustees. As we
experienced several operational changes
during the year, the expertise and support
of the trustees were invaluable, and the
Foundation is stronger as a result.
I am so proud to be associated with
this great Foundation, and I look forward
to continuing to partner with our donors,
trustees and members of the UHS family as,
together, we create the positive healthcare
experiences of tomorrow.
With gratitude and kind regards,
Doctors, nurses and technicians at UHS are able to offer patients the latest in diagnostics because of equipment provided through Foundation giving. An important purchase in 2016 was an affirm biopsy system to diagnose breast cancer.

Many physicians and surgeons complete their medical residencies at UHS Wilson. Often their work is advanced by the generosity of Foundation donors. A recent grant purchased cardiothoracic training simulators that help residents gain skills in delicate medical procedures.
GIVING
T he UHS Foundation has a
significant history of philanthropic
support from people throughout
the Southern Tier community, and the
contributions of 2016 were a stellar
example of this tradition.
More than 1,800 donors made
contributions to the UHS Foundation in
2016 – by giving to the community-wide
annual appeal, supporting a team in the
Golf Classic, sponsoring a table at the
“Mardi Gras Madness” special event, or
making a gift in honor of a special provider
on National Doctors’ Day.
UHS relies on this kind of exceptional
generosity from many individuals to help
it meet its mission of offering outstanding
care in our community.

MANAGING
O ur goal always is to ensure that
people in our region will truly
benefit from Foundation giving.
Every dollar donated is strategically spent to
have a positive and significant effect on the
quality of care in the Southern Tier.
At the Foundation, we take pride in the
prudent management of more than 120
individual funds. Endowed fund donors
trust us with their donations, and trust
that their generosity will last beyond their
lifetimes.
One exceptional example is the Allaben
Fund for Orthopedics, established in
1985 in memory of Greater Binghamton
pioneering orthopedic surgeon Charles
Allaben, MD, to strengthen innovative
treatment for orthopedic patients.
The fund started with less than $30,000
and today is worth $1.9 million. Over the
years, the Allaben Fund has measurably
advanced care in the orthopedic field. With
proper stewardship, gifts to the Foundation
today can produce lasting benefits for
generations to come.

T he UHS Foundation continues to
support the margin of excellence for
which UHS is well known.
Grants paid in 2016 included one that
funded an affirm biopsy system to provide
enhanced patient comfort and better image
quality for three-dimensional tomosynthesis
mammograms. This made UHS the first
healthcare system in the region to offer
3D tomosynthesis with affirm biopsy.
To modernize safety and security on
UHS campuses, the Foundation was proud
to help fund the purchase of emergency
blue-light call-box systems, similar to
those on college campuses. The boxes are
activated by pressing and releasing a red
button if someone needs help.
UHS is home to a long-standing Medical
Residency Program that has trained scores
of physicians and other providers over
the years. The program brings enthusiastic
medical residents and innovative
physicians together for advanced learning
and practice. A recent grant from the
Foundation provided cardiothoracic training
simulators, creating a safe environment for
residents to gain skill in such procedures as
thoracentesis and lumbar puncture.
GRANTING
Patients like professional ballplayer Luis “Machete” Rodriguez, who’s back in the game thanks to shoulder surgery at UHS, are among the beneficiaries of UHS’ outstanding program in orthopedic care. Orthopedic excellence is made possible in part by donations to the Allaben Fund, established at the Foundation in 1985.
