ANNUAL CRIME STATISTICS 2016

CRIME STATISTICS

Comparative analysis of Crime Statistics for the year 2015 and

2016 showed remarkable results:

Police received a total of 177,241 complaints throughout the

country in the year 2016. This represents a decrease of 9,193

cases, which translated into 4.9% over that of the year 2015

which recorded a figure of 186,434. Out of this total, 166,839

representing 94.1% were registered as true cases; the remaining

10,402 cases representing 5.9% were refused. The cases, which

were refused, were regarded as trivial, civil in nature or false and

so did not warrant Police action.

Out of the true cases, 29,778 cases were sent to court for

prosecution. At the court, 8,379 cases representing 28.1%

gained conviction whilst 812 representing 2.7% were acquitted.

At the close of the year 2016, 20,587 cases representing 69.1%

of the total number of cases sent to court for prosecutions were

awaiting trial. A total of 36,042 cases were closed as undetected

whilst 101,019 cases representing 60.5% of the total number of

true cases were under investigation at the close of the year 2016.

Robbery cases recorded in the year 2016 registered a decrease of 14

cases representing 1%. A total of 1,397 robbery cases were recorded

at the end of the year 2016 as compared to 1,411 cases in the year

2015. Statistics indicate that approximately four (4) cases of robbery

were recorded daily in the year 2016.

Seventy-one (71) foreign nationals including sixty-four (64) Chinese,

one (1) British, one (1) Indian, one (1) American, two (2) Lebanese

and one (1) Swiss national were attacked by robbers. Twenty-three

(23) Chinese and two (2) Turkish were injured through robbery. Eleven

(11) Chinese were arrested for mining without lawful authority. Two

(2) Chinese were murdered and six (6) expatriates, including a

Chinese, three (3) Indians, a Scottish and an American perished

through unnatural death. Police managed to arrest two hundred and

ninety-two (292) suspected robbers nationwide.

Lives Lost & Injuries through Robbery:

A total of seventy-nine (79) lives were lost through armed robbery in

the year 2016 as compared to forty-nine (49) in the year 2015. Out of

these, forty-five (45) were innocent victims including five (5)

policemen whilst twenty-four (24) were armed robbers who engaged

the Police in a gun battle. Two (2) of these robbers were killed by

their own colleague robbers. Seven (7) female robbery victims were

raped and one (1) defiled. Two hundred and twenty-nine (229)

robbery victims sustained various degrees of injury. The public were

educated not to take the law into their own hands by meting out

instant justice to suspected criminals. Nevertheless, five (5) of such

cases were recorded over the period.

o The Modus Operandi of the robbers include:

The robbers (usually one person) hire a targeted vehicle but

having liaised with his counterparts somewhere, requests the

driver to stop, usually at obscure areas, where his accomplices

are hiding, thereby facilitating a reinforced attack.

Armed men, usually on board unregistered motorbikes, trail

unsuspecting members of the public to obscure areas, intimidate

them with lethal weapons and rob them.

The armed men sometimes barricade a section of the Highway

and rob travelers of their money and other belongings.

The armed men oftentimes having robbed a vehicle, fix fake

number plates on it, later trail unsuspecting victims with this

vehicle to obscure areas and rob them. This scenario is taking a

dramatic turn as, in recent past, the criminals rob their victims

just at the entrance to victims’ residences.
