•Organize three in-country workshops to share information on existing technologies and benefits
• Stakeholders to participate in at least three MSP meetings
5
• Stakeholders to participate in at least three field days
• Study to assess adoption of new groundnut technologies and impact in three northern regions
Activity 1.3
Develop strategies to reduce gender productivity gab among groundnut
farmers from a study
7
Completed tasks
• PRA to examine gender differences and productivity gaps in five communities
• PRA data analysis on-going
8
Next step
• Finalize analysis of PRA data
•Develop draft strategies to reduce gender productivity gap
•Organize three in-country brainstorming workshop to finalize gender strategies
•Develop gender sensitization tools
9
Objective 2
Realized productivity gains of 20% (over local varieties, and 10% over best improved where relevant) achieved in
groundnut production areas where seed of the improved varieties
developed by the project have been extended
Activity 2.1
Trait Discovery Pipeline - NARS breeding programs regularly provide well-adapted
and market-preferred improved groundnut cultivars to the farmers as per their
requirements
Completed Task
• Land has been identified and earmarked for the construction of a fence with irrigation facility
• BMS has been integrated and tablets have been acquired to collect the data electronically
• Population development and assembly of available germplasm to explore SNP resources developed at ICRISAT will continue
•Construction of fence with irrigation for drought studies will continue on a two hectare land acquired
• Train technicians on the use of 3 handheld devices acquired for data capture and data management using BMS
Next Steps
Activity 2.2
Breeding Pipeline - NARS partners using improved groundnut breeding lines for
developing better varieties
Completed Task
• The following lines were obtained from ICRISAT • SD + ELS + LLS = 15
• SD + Alatoxin tolerance = 10
• Drought tolerance = 15
• MD + ELS + LLS = 2
• International trial = 15
•Observation nursery is in progress to increase seed stock for trials in major season
Next Steps
• A trial with 17 entries aimed at identifying short duration lines with tolerance to ELS and LLS will be established at Nyankpala and Damongo
• Eleven short duration genotypes with tolerance to aflatoxin contamination will be put in a trial at Nyankpala and Damongo
• A trial aimed at identifying drought tolerant genotypes will be conducted at Nyankpala and Damongo with 17 genotypes
• A trial aimed at identifying medium duration genotypes with ELS and LLS tolerance will be done at Nyankpala
Next Step
• Two candidate varieties (ICGV-IS 08837 and GAF 1772) will be evaluated on farm
• 6 international trial with 17 entries will be conducted • Chinchang, Silbelle (Upper West Region), Binduri, Asonge
(Upper East Region), Damongo and Nyankpala (Northern Region)
• 6 multi-location trial with 8 genotypes selected from our national program
• Chinchang, Kpongu (Upper West Region)
• Binduri, Asonge (Upper East Region)
• Damongo and Nyankpala (Northern Region)
• 60 FPVS following the mother-baby trial approach will be established in 12 districts district involving 10 groundnut entries • (Bawku Municipal, Kasena-Nankana Municipal, Nadowli-
Kaleo, Daffiama-Bussie-Issah, Wa West, Sissala West, Mion, Bunkpurugu/Yunyoo, West Mamprusi, Tolon, Yendi, West Gonja)
• 10 cultivated varieties and 5 superior genotypes identified from our trials will be analysed for nutritional composition
Activity 2.4
Best Bet Varieties - Farmers using improved groundnut cultivars and
Integrated Crop Management
Next Steps
•Demonstrations will be conducted under objective 6
• Breeder seeds of ICGV-IS 08837 and GAF 1772 will be produced on 0.5 ha land each
• 10 released varieties cultivated in Ghana will be fingerprinted at ICRISAT
Objective 6
Developing Sustainable and Impact-Oriented Legume Seed Systems for Smallholders in Sub-Saharan Africa
and South Asia
Completed tasks
• Actors/stakeholders identified and sensitized
• Five MSPs launched across three northern regions
26
Next step
• Launch five additional MSPs to be established
• Steering committees to be established for the new MSPs
•Quarterly work plans for new MSPs to be developed
28
Next step
•Organize participatory SWOT analysis of each actor of the MSPs
•Host varietal demonstrations in the 10 MSPs
29
Completed Task
• 2.2 tons of breeder seeds produced
• 2 ha of foundation seed under irrigation expected to produce 5 tons of foundation seed
• Training on seed production, business management and marketing was conducted for seed growers, seed companies and input dealers
