very interesting but due to limited funding we can only confirm that the chapter will be able to commit to the below 2 projects in 2021 while we seek funding for the other 3 to ensure that we succeed.
1. Hustle: A virtual job market for young people in Zimbabwe – Chitungwiza2. Empowering people living with disabilities through website and graphic design training
Beyond The Net Large Grant The Chapter managed to close the Off-Grid IoT Urban Farming in 2020 and it made a huge impact and exhibited with the Internet Society Foundation and also having other chapters reaching out for assistance. Currently the chapter project running under this grant was started mid 2020 and is expected to end mid-year. The project is Covid19 Now and Beyond – Community Digital Citizenship Up Skilling. We will call for proposal for the Large grant to chapter members when the project has been completed around mid year.Research GrantThe Chapter will soon be conducting a research supported by ISOC Foundation on Greening the Internet, after we partnered with University of Pennsylvania in the US. The project is led by Dr. Maphosa who is one of the chapter members.
Projects UpdateOpen Education project (Small Grant 2020)This project was funded by the Beyond the Net Small grant. The open education project was implemented in response to the Covid 19 global pandemic and its impact on education. As a chapter we conducted a research that conclusively showed that there was a gap in between the student learning in an urban setup, private, school and rural setup. Resource availability is not the same. The elite end up having all the resources for them to easily pass and excel. Laboratories are not there in all the different setups. With this result, we decided to embark on trying to bridge the gap of this imbalance using internet technology. A new paradigm shift was envisaged by the chapter. The solution we wanted to produce was one that will allow different modes of access and not eliminating the poorest of the populace. The solution was going to be highly scalable and also open for usage by any country, region or continent. The source code will be shared on GitHub for feedback even from the global community. We developed an open educational platform that was initially for O and A Level writing students, meaning these were due to sit for their examinations. When schools closed because of COVID-19, these students were to learn on this platform and prepare for their examination, in other words, Education was not going to be disturbed for these candidates, the bonus was that this meant education without any payment/tuition or fee. Accessibility of the platform is:
Web portal[Online Access]Mobile App[Offline Access]SMS Interaction
We have subscribed participants who have set for their first examinations last year. . We are now trying to scale this project to include all the classes to be able to continue to have education even outside their school environment and also promoting internet usage and technology for a cause. For last year the confirmed passes are 1258. The overall enrolment was 1974.
ISOC Zim-– Self –EservicesThis was a Chapterthon project. This is a platform that caters for all Zimbabwean citizens covering 6 Sustainable development goals accessibility for the populace from one portal and single interface. The platform enhances easy access and a plethora of resources which are equivalent for premium resources yet they are open and free for usage and access.Services covered in this platform are:1. Agriculture2. Health3. Gender and Equality4. Education5. Water and Sanitation6. E-jobs/ Clean workThis platform is accessible through 3 different ways• Online portal• SMS• Offline app
